Abstract: This publication, entitled “Natural Disasters. A Global Approach” brings together a set of texts devoted specifically to disasters that have as their origin phenomena of nature, full manifestation of the so-called natural hazards. Throughout each of these chapters, we have sought to clarify the conceptual and methodological aspects inherent in each of the risks under analysis, their systematization or typification, effects and consequences, particularly for the Human Being, and examples of their manifestation. Although with distinct characteristics and influenced by different factors, the extent of natural disasters is evident, affecting the generality of human societies and conditioning their activity in almost all parts of the earth´s surface. It is our hope that this work will fulfill its intended purpose and become a valuable working tool and a vehicle for disseminating information and raising awareness of natural disasters

Abstract: The mixed risks, of environmental component, are associated with a potentially hazardous phenomenon with combined causes, that is, for its manifestation compete natural conditions and anthropic actions. In this book, more than a dozen risks are analyzed, which are part of two main typologies: the mixed risks of atmospheric component, mainly associated with changes in the chemical composition of the atmosphere, and the mixed risks of geodynamic component, which relate to forces and processes that act on the Earth (internal geodynamics, for example the risk of induced seismicity, and external geodynamics, with emphasis on the risks of erosion, desertification, salinisation, pollution and forest fires). In all risk typologies, here we analyzed, the contribution of the human being, through its actions and activities, constitutes a common element, extending, unambiguously, its causes and consequences. Therefore, all authors are unanimous about the need to implement integrated measures and actions to safeguard the main natural resources

Abstract: In the continuation of what has been produced in the series "Risks and Disasters", this volume assumes the thematic continuity, in a more systematic and holistic logic. It concerns, in particular, the theme of "Anthropic disasters. An integral approach", so it is a very unusual character. Let's say that the type of risks it deals with, the synthesis nature it presents and the organizational structure chosen, gives it a singular character in the contemporary world context. In the path of anthropic disasters, two major risk groups were considered, namely technological and social. The first relate to structural systems to support human activity, such as transport, civil construction, urban spaces (fires, waste) and water resources. The second is associated with social action, and it addresses issues ranging from conflict to Urbicicide

Abstract: This book aims to frame the study of the different types of risk involving the intervention of civil protection agents, at the same time that it seeks to specify the meaning, in the Portuguese language, of some of the main concepts associated with risk theory and contributing to the definition of the methodology about the study of physical and human hazards, designed with a holistic character and therefore different from the parcelary analyses made by the science which contributes to the methodology of their respective specialties, whether it is natural sciences, social sciences and humanities or economic sciences. In this way and unlike these more specific sciences, which have a more specialised view and, therefore, also more in the risk, the sciences about the study of physical and human hazards seek to concentrate on the overall risk study, through a holistic view that encompasses the different types of manifestations because they materialize. In fact, only the sciences about the study of physical and human hazards possess all the risks as a central and unique object of study, involving all types and, also, their different phases of manifestation, from prevention to the recovery of areas where they have manifested themselves, and also their stakeholders, from the characters to the infrastructures, contrary to what happens to other sciences that consider the risks more as manifestations, which are studied only in aspects that relate to their specialty. Moreover, this approach about the study of physical and human hazards seeks to be global and systemic, that is, it tries to take into account all the elements that explain different types of risk, from its origin: natural, anthropic or mixed, to the consequences caused by its manifestation, both in people, in their goods and possessions. Finally, we consider that education is the most appropriate way to solve the problems resulting from the manifestation of risks, so that the technical-scientific knowledge, materialized in several knowledge, is fundamental for a properly sustained education. For all these reasons, the publication of this book aims to contribute to the knowledge about the study of physical and human hazards and, through it, to a better education and a greater resilience of the population to the manifestations of risk and, therefore, contribute to the reduction of the risk

Abstract: The expression “poiesis of democracy” in the title refers to its central concern: to understand “democracy” not as a univocal and absolute concept, but as a result of historical permanencies and transformations inherent of both its Greek formulation and its contemporary uses, that is, as a problem whose answers derive from permanently meditated and mediated negotiation. Thus, the main problem dealt with in the volume is the analysis — preferably interdisciplinary and open to multiple theoretical methodological approaches — of the construction of the concept of Athenian democracy as a problematic political and cultural arena (and not as a goal, structure or program), perceptible in different authors and discourses of the classical period, as well as reflections that supplemented them throughout the fifth and fourth centuries BC

Abstract: This Portuguese contribution to the debate on the concept of “Empire” brings together 17 essays covering various areas and periods across Antiquity. Biblical sources allow us to structure various categories and organize their related meanings as valuable paths to inform our understating of the idea of “Empire”. Egypt first serves as the opportunity to inquire the usefulness of “Empire” as a concept within the larger discussion of periodization in History, as well as the scope and limitations of its definitions, as the observed political dissolution in the Late New Kingdom shows. Regarding Ancient “Mesopotamian Empires”, the first “Empire” is usually attributed to the political formulas brought forth by the dynasty of Akkad, which emerged before the hegemony of Babylon. The underlying ideology to Hammurabi’s social and military policies through two crucial moments in Babylonian History provides the ground to analyze the emergence of its first hegemony: the war with Elam and the expedition to the Kingdom of Larsa. Approaches to the Anatolian and the Phoenician/Syrian-Palestinian territories follow a methodology focused on myth and religious narratives and the traces of political realities found there, as well as a reflection on the validity of “imperialism” when applied to the Phoenician colonial world. Later Mesopotamian imperial formulas are analyzed within the context of violence, military and ritual: on Jeremias and the rationale for a heavenly justified submission of Judah to the so-called “Neo-Babylonian Empire”; on Nabonidus, the last king of this dynasty; and on the diverging behavior of both Nabonidus and Cyrus to the cult of Marduk. Herodotus, a privileged source for the classical perception of eastern formulas, displays the Persian Empire as the background for different Greek political proposals at play (famously in 3.80-82), and informs us of the queenship and the queens of Ancient Persia. Moreover, the role and status of women in Hellenistic societies is further examined, most notably in its relations to power. The last four essays propose a conceptual genealogy for the idea of imperium through the Roman World: from the representation Ancient Historiography creates of the processes structuring Roman “imperialism” and their agents; the interpretation Suetonius proposes of imperial power and how it ought to be used; to the validity of a certain notion of “globalization” applied to the Late Roman expanse

Abstract: The vast and varied work of Plutarch naturally allows an approach from different perspectives, with a variety of intentions and plural purposes. However, it is also important to identify common lines of approach, because they demonstrate, both formally and in terms of content, that there are many customary elements underlying his work. The thirteen contributions to this volume are linked by the names of three cities: Sparta, Athens and Rome. They represent diverse political and institutional spaces because of their geographical extension and chronology, and they symbolize as well different models of social organization through which Greece can be contrasted with Rome, or Athens compared to Sparta — but perhaps their most interesting feature in Plutarch's work is that they are paradigmatic places where men live and coexist together. Therefore, the Plutarchists who contributed to this volume analyze for each of these cities, by assimilation or contrast, the way the author from Chaeronea envisages the connection between individual and community as reflected in the exercise of power and the living of religious experiences; the role played by education and private affairs in the public image of Plutarch’s protagonists; or the extent to which the image of the first lawgivers and mythical founders was conditioned by the historical development of these cities
