Abstract: Public spaces are vital to a healthy civic life. Even fleeting interactions in such places tend to expand people's horizons. Sidewalks, plazas, public parks, central squares, and public libraries all enhance public life in unique ways. Yet, as Setha Low details in Why Public Space Matters, we are losing public spaces to urban development and the belief that public spaces are expendable. Just as important is the broad and ongoing corporate privatization of public space. This book explores why public spaces are so vitally important today and what we can do about protecting these essential places.

Abstract: Why do we feel excited, afraid, and frustrated by algorithms? The Feel of Algorithms brings relatable first-person accounts of what it means to experience algorithms emotionally alongside interdisciplinary social science research, to reveal how political and economic processes are felt in the everyday. People's algorithm stories might fail to separate fact and misconception, and circulate wishful, erroneous, or fearful views of digital technologies. Yet rather than treating algorithmic folklore as evidence of ignorance, this novel book explains why personal anecdotes are an important source of algorithmic knowledge. Minna Ruckenstein argues that we get to know algorithms by feeling their actions and telling stories about them. The Feel of Algorithms shows how taking everyday algorithmic emotions seriously balances the current discussion, which has a tendency to draw conclusions based on celebratory or oppositional responses to imagined future effects. An everyday focus zooms into experiences of pleasure, fear, and irritation, highlighting how political aims and ethical tensions play out in visions, practices, and emotional responses. This book shows that feelings aid in recognizing troubling practices, and also calls for alternatives that are currently ignored or suppressed.

Abstract: In the eighteenth century, the printing press enabled the rise of an independent press--the Fourth Estate--that helped check the power of governments, business, and industry. In similar ways, the internet is enabling the empowerment of a more independent collectivity of networked individuals--the Fifth Estate. Dutton uses estate theory to illuminate the most important power shift of the digital age. He argues that this network power shift is not only enabling greater democratic accountability in politics and governance but is also empowering networked individuals in their everyday life and work.

Abstract: Released in 1919, Anders als die Andern is a remarkable artefact of the pre-Stonewall homosexual rights movement of early-twentieth-century Germany. Ervin Malakaj shows how the film's "mournful cinema" is key to its endurance, fostering connection through emotions and acting as a springboard to engage in an intergenerational queer struggle.

In response to the immersive, cyberphysical reality that is rapidly developing, this book argues for a more expansive interpretation of human rights, beyond rights to privacy or data protection, to address the complex array of threats and challenges posed by enveloping digital technologies."--

Abstract: "This scholarly research handbook aggregates the broad-ranging, interdisciplinary, multidimensional strands of writing research from scholars worldwide and brings them together into a common intellectual space. Now in its second edition, the Handbook inaugurates a wide scope of international research advancement, with attention to writing at all levels of schooling and in all life situations. It provides advanced surveys of scholarship on the histories of world and child writing and literacy; interconnections between writing, reading, and speech; digital writing; writing in communities; writing in the sciences and engineering; writing instruction and assessment; and writing and disability. A section on International measures for assessment of writing is a new addition to this compendium of research. This volume serves as a comprehensive resource for scholars, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in writing studies and rhetoric, composition, creative expression, education, and literacy studies"--

Abstract: -- Alice Lovejoy is located in Minneapolis, MN -- Mari Pajala is located in Turku, Finland -- Alice Lovejoy's first IUP book was named co-winner of the Modern Language Association's 2018 Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for Studies in Slavic Languages and Literatures, was awarded an honorable mention for the 2016 University of Southern California Book Prize in Literary and Cultural Studies and the 2017 Czechoslovak Studies Association Book Prize, and was longlisted for the 2016 Kraszna-Krausz Moving Image Book Award. Lovejoy is an expert film, media, and cultural historian who focuses on governmental and institutional media cultures in transnational perspectives. Mari Pajala is editor of four volumes in Finnish and German. Pajala was previously Government of Finland/David and Nancy Speer Visiting Professor in Finnish Studies at the University of Minnesota and visiting research fellow at Utrecht University. Pajala currently teaches modules including Media History and Archives and Media and Popular Culture. -- This book makes an important contribution to scholarship on the cultural history of the Cold War through media studies that reveal that East European media engaged in multiple ways with spaces beyond the Iron Curtain. -- This book fits squarely in our film and media and Russian and Eastern European Studies lists. It contributes to our established collection on documentary and non-fiction film, which is well-respected and still receiving a steady stream of new works. -- Our audience includes scholars and graduate students in film and media and Russian and Eastern European Studies. The appeal is academic, but broad because the volume has a wide geographical approach and is interdisciplinary.

Abstract: Social norms are valuable because they help us to understand guidelines for appropriate and ethical behavior. However, as part of that process, cultures develop taboo behaviors and topics for group members to avoid. Failure to discuss important topics, such as sex, drug use, or interpersonal violence, can lead to unwanted or unintended negative outcomes. Improving communication about forbidden topics may lead to positive social and health outcomes, but we must first develop the communication and coping skills to handle these difficult conversations. The Handbook of Research on Communication Strategies for Taboo Topics seeks both quantitative and qualitative research to provide empirical evidence of the negative social and health outcomes of avoiding taboo conversations and provides communication and coping strategies for dealing with difficult topics. Covering a range of issues such as grief and forgiveness, this major reference work is ideal for academicians, practitioners, researchers, counselors, sociologists, professionals, instructors, and students.

Abstract: "Boundary Spanners of Humanity tackles the growing severity of global problems and our strained ability to collaborate by critically re-examining two pivotal tools: communication and public diplomacy. R.S. Zaharna, a leading scholar of public diplomacy and international strategic communication, exposes the limitations of intercultural communication and state-based public diplomacy and proposes a pan-human vision of communication that can revolutionize how we communicate globally. The book reveals how dominant views of communication and public diplomacy are based on a 19th-century mindset of separateness that clashes with today's global connectivity and diversity. In a radical break from outdated models that divide humanity into cultural categories, Zaharna introduces a vision of humanity-centered public diplomacy featuring three complementary logics of communication. Used together, these communication logics are key to leveraging diversity, navigating connectivity, and enhancing our capacity for collaboration. Zaharna's innovative approach stems from decade-long, interdisciplinary research spanning ancient cosmologies, diverse intellectual heritages, contemporary social science, and emerging neuro-biological science. Boundary Spanners of Humanity provides a rich array of examples from ancient diplomacies to the covid-19 pandemic to illustrate a vision of pan-human communication that spans our diversity and harnesses it as an essential strength in collective problem solving and global collaboration"--

Abstract: "How have radical print cultures fostered and preserved queer lived experience from the 1960s to the present? What alternative stories about queer life across Europe can visual material reveal? Queer Print in Europe is the first book devoted to the exploration of queer print cultures in Europe, following the birth of an international gay rights movement in the late 1960s. By unearthing these ephemeral paper documents from archives and personal collections, including materials that have been out of circulation since they were first distributed, this book examines how the production and dissemination of queer print intersected with the emergence of LGBTQ+ activism within specific national contexts. This vital contribution to queer history explores borders and political movements, and the ways in which these materials contributed, through their international circulation, to the creation of a 'post-national' queer community. Illustrated throughout with examples of manifestos, flyers, posters, zines and other forms of print media, it features interviews with those responsible for making, distributing or archiving queer print, alongside a series of new theoretical essays that set particular publications and the individuals and groups that produced them in context. The book isolates specific instances of queer print media and scrutinises their design aesthetics, identifying both the significant contribution that queer print has made to histories of LGBTQ+ struggle and to the history of print design."--

Abstract: "Autoethnography is generating increasing levels of interest in research circles, gaining popularity as an innovative and inciting qualitative approach. Drawing on the vast diversity of researchers' opinions on autoethnographic praxes, this book presents a cogent analysis of the ongoing debates in the field before moving on to the discussion of a new approach to both theorizing about and 'doing' autoethnography: a 'symbiotic autoethnography'. This approach synthesizes central aspects from the diversity of existing arguments into one supple and adaptable framework that organically combines all the key characteristic features of autoethnographic research. The author uses the concept of 'symbiosis' in its broader sense to denote close interdependence and interrelation between its suggested six attributes, including temporality, researcher's omnipresence, evocative storytelling, interpretative analysis, political (transformative) focus, and reflexivity. The book offers both experienced and novice researchers a theoretically informed multi-functional methodological tool that has the capacity to accommodate the dynamics of our diverse personal experiences within a topography of specific professional, cultural and socio-political contexts."--

Abstract: This book provides an in-depth investigation of Russian online anti-establishment resistances in 2016-2019. Grounded in qualitative content analysis of the YouTube videos and social media data of opposition activist Alexey Navalny and his associates, the research covers the history of these communications, their tactics, and the impact on the Russian public sphere and peripheral electorates. Drawing from populism, journalism and digital media studies, Glazunova skilfully shows Russia's digital public sphere to be a multi-faceted site with its own struggles, challenges, and unique communication strategies for political survival. An important and original work, Digital Activism in Russia reflects on the past, present, and future of such resistances in Russia, the central role played by digital media, and its relevance for the political activists struggling for democracy around the world.

Abstract: More people today consume news via Facebook and Google than from any news organization in history. As a consequence, the technology companies behind them exercise new, distinct forms of platform power. In The Power of Platforms, Rasmus Kleis Nielsen and Sarah Anne Ganter draw on original interviews and other qualitative evidence from the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom to trace the development of the relationships between platforms and news publishers. They analyze how technology companies exercise platform power, how news organizations have responded, and unfold the implications for news and our societies more broadly.

Abstract: "Voice as Art considers how artists have used human voices, since they became reproducible and entered art discourse in the twentieth century. The discussion embeds artworks using voices within historical and theoretical contexts in a comparative overview arguing that reproduction caused increased creativity moving from acting to creating phonic materials framed by phenomenological deep listening by early video and performance to the plurality and sampling of postmodernism and the multiple angles of contemporary forensic listening. This change is an example of how artistic practice reveals the ideologies of listening. Using a range of examples from Hugo Ball, Martha Rosler, Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Janet Cardiff, and Mike Kelley through to contemporary practice by Shilpa Gupta, The Otolith Group Elizabeth Price the voice is tracked through modernism and postmodernism to posthumanism in relation to speaking subjects, sculptural objects, documents, dramaturgical utterance, forensic evidence, verbatim techniques, and embodied listening. This book gives artists, researchers, and art audiences ways to understand how voices exist in between theoretical discourses and how with their utterance's artists create new dispositions in space by reworking genres to critique cultural form and meaning. It will be of great interest to students and practitioners of sound art, visual culture and theatre and performance"--

Abstract: Siegfried Kracauer stands out as one of the most significant theorists and critics of the twentieth century, acclaimed for his analyses of film and popular culture. However, his writing on propaganda and politics has been overshadowed by the works of his contemporaries and colleagues associated with the Frankfurt School. This book brings together a broad selection of Kracauer's work on media and political communication, much of it previously unavailable in English. It features writings spanning more than two decades, from studies of totalitarian propaganda written in the 1930s to wartime work on Nazi newsreels and anti-Semitism through to examinations of American and Soviet political messaging in the early Cold War period. These varied texts illuminate the interplay among politics, mass culture, and the media, and they encompass Kracauer's core concerns: the individual and the masses, the conditions of cultural production, and the critique of modernity. The introduction and afterword explore the significance of Kracauer's contributions to critical theory, film and media studies, and the analysis of political communication both in his era and the present day. At a time when demagoguery and bigotry loom over world politics, Kracauer's inquiries into topics such as the widespread appeal of fascist propaganda and the relationship of new media forms and technologies to authoritarianism are strikingly relevant

Using the concepts of 'letting go' and 'poetics', it envisions collaborative research as a space where relationships are forged with the use of arts-based and multimodal ways of seeing, inquiring, and representing ideas.
