Abstract: When you need practical hands-on support for Active Directory, the updated edition of this extremely popular Cookbook provides quick solutions to more than 300 common (and uncommon) problems you might encounter when deploying, administering, and automating Microsoft's network directory service. For the third edition, Active Directory expert Laura E. Hunter offers troubleshooting recipes based on valuable input from Windows administrators, in addition to her own experience. You'll find solutions for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), ADAM (Active Directory Application Mode), multi-master replication, Domain Name System (DNS), Group Policy, the Active Directory Schema, and many other features. The Active Directory Cookbook will help you: Perform Active Directory tasks from the command line Use scripting technologies to automate Active Directory tasks Manage new Active Directory features, such as Read-Only Domain Controllers, fine-grained password policies, and more Create domains and trusts Locate users whose passwords are about to expire Apply a security filter to group policy objects Check for potential replication problems Restrict hosts from performing LDAP queries View DNS server performance statistics Each recipe includes a discussion explaining how and why the solution works, so you can adapt the problem-solving techniques to similar situations. Active Directory Cookbook is ideal for any IT professional using Windows Server 2008, Exchange 2007, and Identity Lifecycle Manager 2007, including Active Directory administrators looking to automate task-based solutions. "It is rare for me to visit a customer site and not see a copy of Active Directory Cookbook on a shelf somewhere, which is a testament to its usefulness. The Cookbook takes the pain out of everyday AD tasks by providing concise, clear and relevant recipes. The fact that the recipes are provided using different methods (graphical user interface, command line and scripting) means that the book is suitable for anyone working with AD on a day-to-day basis. The introduction of PowerShell examples in this latest edition will be of particular interest for those looking to transition from VBScript. Laura has also done a great job in extending the Cookbook in this edition to encompass the broad range of changes to AD in Windows Server 2008." --Tony Murray, Founder of Activedir.org and Directory Services MVP "If you already understand Active Directory fundamentals and are ...

Abstract: Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) is Microsoft's dynamic technology for allowing autonomous software to communicate. Superseding earlier technologies such as COM/DCOM, .NET Remoting, ASP.NET Web Services, and the Web Services Enhancements for .NET, WCF provides a single solution that is designed to always be the best way to exchange data among software entities. It also provides the infrastructure for developing the next generation of Web Services, with support for the WS-* family of specifications, and a new serialization system for enhanced performance. In the 3.5 release, WCF has been expanded to include support for REST, JSON, and Syndication (RSS and Atom) services, further broadening the possibilities for what can be done. For information technology professionals, WCF supplies an impressive array of administration tools that enterprises and software vendors can use to reduce the cost of ownership of their solutions without writing a single line of code. Most important, WCF delivers on the promise of model-driven software development with the new software factory approach, by which one can iteratively design solutions in a modeling language and generate executables from lower-level class libraries. Windows Communication Foundation 3.5 Unleashed is designed to be the essential resource for software developers and architects working with WCF. The book guides readers through a conceptual understanding of all the facilities of WCF and provides step-by-step guides to applying the technology to practical problems. As evangelists at Microsoft for WCF, WF, and CardSpace, Craig McMurtry, Marc Mercuri, Nigel Watling, and Matt Winkler are uniquely positioned to write this book. They had access to the development team and to the product as it was being built. Their work with enterprises and outside software vendors has given them unique insight into how others see the software, how they want to apply it, and the challenges they face in doing so. --Gives you nearly 100 best practices for programming with WCF --Provides detailed coverage of how to version services that you will not find anywhere else --Delves into using WCF together with Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) and Windows CardSpace --Provides detailed coverage of the new high-performance data contract serializer for .NET --Walks you through creating secure, reliable, transacted messaging, and how to understand the available options --Introduces you to federated, claims-based security and...

Abstract: "When you begin using multi-threading throughout an application, the importance of clean architecture and design is critical. . . . This places an emphasis on understanding not only the platform's capabilities but also emerging best practices. Joe does a great job interspersing best practices alongside theory throughout his book." - From the Foreword by Craig Mundie, Chief Research and Strategy Officer, Microsoft Corporation Author Joe Duffy has risen to the challenge of explaining how to write software that takes full advantage of concurrency and hardware parallelism. In Concurrent Programming on Windows, he explains how to design, implement, and maintain large-scale concurrent programs, primarily using C# and C++ for Windows. Duffy aims to give application, system, and library developers the tools and techniques needed to write efficient, safe code for multicore processors. This is important not only for the kinds of problems where concurrency is inherent and easily exploitable-such as server applications, compute-intensive image manipulation, financial analysis, simulations, and AI algorithms-but also for problems that can be speeded up using parallelism but require more effort-such as math libraries, sort routines, report generation, XML manipulation, and stream processing algorithms. Concurrent Programming on Windows has four major sections: The first introduces concurrency at a high level, followed by a section that focuses on the fundamental platform features, inner workings, and API details. Next, there is a section that describes common patterns, best practices, algorithms, and data structures that emerge while writing concurrent software. The final section covers many of the common system-wide architectural and process concerns of concurrent programming. This is the only book you'll need in order to learn the best practices and common patterns for programming with concurrency on Windows and .NET.

Abstract: Installing and running Windows on an Intel-based Mac has become commonplace, but doing so most effectively still requires expert knowledge. Fortunately, the new Take Control of Running Windows on a Mac, Third Edition" brings readers 167 pages of hard-won advice, helping readers determine the best installation option for their needs, install Windows easily, and keep Windows secure, properly backed up, and working optimally. Written by cross-platform guru Joe Kissell and based on innumerable hours of research, the title covers Windows XP and Windows Vista, and it gives procedures for working with virtualization programs VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, and VirtualBox, along with Apple's dual-boot solution, Boot Camp. For each option, Kissell provides instructions for installing the software and for installing Windows, and he goes further by explaining how to make peripherals - like mice, keyboards, and printers - behave properly, how to share files between the Mac and Windows environments, and how to integrate the Mac and Windows interfaces. Kissell also looks at software that makes it possible to run Windows programs on a Mac without installing Windows itself, and he explains methods of acquiring Windows, a topic made confusing by Microsoft's many licensing options and activation mechanism. The $10 ebook comes with coupons for $8 off the price of VMware Fusion and $5 off Parallels Desktop. It can be purchased at http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/windows-?on-mac - a free sample version and the introductory text are also available at that link. Questions answered in the ebook include: What are 15 things that you can do in Windows, but not on the Mac? How can I get a copy of Windows XP or Vista that will work on a Mac? How can I set things up so that Windows won't bog down? How should I handle partitioning for my Windows installation? How do I avoid and handle activation hassles? Boot Camp is free with Leopard, but what are the pros and cons to using it? How can I run one copy of Windows with both Boot Camp and virtualization software? Should I run VMware Fusion, Parallels Desktop, or VirtualBox? What's the best way to right-click in Windows? How do I print from my Windows software? How do I make my Bluetooth devices work in Windows? What is FAT32, and why might it matter to me? What are the coolest new features in Parallels Desktop 4? What's interesting about the different views in VMware Fusion?

Abstract: Although analysts expect the majority of enterprises to tread slowly into migration, there certainly will be early adopters, as there are with any system or device. Because Microsoft has announced that it will support Windows 2000 only until the year 2010, enterprises using older versions of Windows will not have much time for leisurely testing and pilot projects before they need to seriously consider migrating to and deploying Windows Vista. Deploying Windows Vista will require an entirely new set of skills for IT departments called on to migrate from older versions of Windows. Any IT professional looking to the future of their enterprise network deployment will benefit from the advice, tips, and reliable information contained in this resource. The book covers all the important security issues that are top of mind in today's IT world, as well as troubleshooting practices to help get issues resolved in less time. A valuable CD ROM contains tools and utilities to help IT professionals as they deploy Windows Vista for the first time.

Abstract: Use PowerShell to Streamline and Automate Your Most Time-Consuming Windows Administration Tasks With Windows PowerShell, Microsoft brings innovative console-based system administration and scripting to Windows clients and servers. PowerShell combines the best features of traditional UNIX shells with the immense power of the .NET Framework, offering a consistent and easy-to-use replacement for both the Windows command line and the Windows Script Host. In Essential PowerShell , noted expert Holger Schwichtenberg gives Windows sysadmins all the knowledge and sample scripts they need to successfully administer production systems with PowerShell. Schwichtenberg begins by introducing the innovative PowerShell architecture, along with crucial PowerShell concepts such as pipelining and navigation. Next, he introduces the PowerShell Script Language, shows the secure execution of command sequences as scripts, and demonstrates how to use PowerShell to access essential operating system interfaces such as COM, WMI, ADSI, and ADO.NET. After you've mastered the fundamentals, Schwichtenberg presents an extensive collection of PowerShell solutions for virtually every area of day-to-day administration. For each topic, he presents dozens of self-contained examples, all downloadable from a companion Web site. He covers both Microsoft's standard PowerShell commandlets and the free commandlets available as PowerShell Community Extensions. He also presents a full chapter of tips, tricks, and troubleshooting solutions. Coverage includes Understanding PowerShell's components and features Setting up your PowerShell scripting environment Creating and using commandlets Using object-oriented pipelining for filtering, sorting, grouping, comparisons, calculations, and more Mastering PowerShell's uniform navigation model and using it with all types of data Programming command sequences with the PowerShell Script Language Making the most of the PowerShell console and third-party tools Managing processes, event logs, and registry entries Controlling networking, printing, and software installation Manipulating Active Directory and other enterprise services with PowerShell Using PowerShell to enforce stronger system and network security Storing data in files, documents, and databases

Abstract: Programming WCF Services is the authoritative, bestselling introduction to Microsoft's unified platform for developing service-oriented applications (SOA) on Windows. Hailed as the most definitive treatment of WCF available, this relentlessly practical book provides insight, not documentation, to help you learn the topics and skills you need for building WCF-based applications that are maintainable, extensible, and reusable. Author Juval Lowy, Microsoft software legend and participant in WCF's original strategic design review, revised this new edition for the latest productivity-enhancing features of C# 3.0 and the .NET 3.5 SP1 Framework. The book also contains Lowy's ServiceModelEx, a framework of useful utilities, tools, and helper classes that let you simplify and automate many tasks, and extend WCF as well. With this book, you will: Learn about WCF architecture and essential building blocks, including key concepts such as reliability and transport session Use built-in features such as service hosting, instance management, concurrency management, transactions, disconnected queued calls, and security Take advantage of relevant design options, tips, and best practices in Lowy's ServiceModelEx framework to increase your productivity and the quality of your WCF services Learn the rationale behind particular design decisions, and discover poorly documented and little-understood aspects of SOA development By teaching you the "why" along with the "how" of WCF programming, Programming WCF Services not only will help you master WCF, it will enable you to become a better software engineer.

Abstract: I decided to write this book for a couple of reasons. One was that I've now written a couple of books that have to do with incident response and forensic analysis on Windows systems, and I used a lot of Perl in both books. Okay...I'll come clean...I used nothing but Perl in both books! What I've seen as a result of this is that many readers want to use the tools, but don't know how...they simply aren't familiar with Perl, with interpreted (or scripting) languages in general, and may not be entirely comfortable with running tools at the command line. This book is intended for anyone who has an interest in useful Perl scripting, in particular on the Windows platform, for the purpose of incident response, and forensic analysis, and application monitoring. While a thorough grounding in scripting languages (or in Perl specifically) is not required, it helpful in fully and more completely understanding the material and code presented in this book. This book contains information that is useful to consultants who perform incident response and computer forensics, specifically as those activities pertain to MS Windows systems (Windows 2000, XP, 2003, and some Vista). My hope is that not only will consultants (such as myself) find this material valuable, but so will system administrators, law enforcement officers, and students in undergraduate and graduate programs focusing on computer forensics. *Perl Scripting for Live Response Using Perl, there's a great deal of information you can retrieve from systems, locally or remotely, as part of troubleshooting or investigating an issue. Perl scripts can be run from a central management point, reaching out to remote systems in order to collect information, or they can be "compiled" into standalone executables using PAR, PerlApp, or Perl2Exe so that they can be run on systems that do not have ActiveState's Perl distribution (or any other Perl distribution) installed. *Perl Scripting for Computer Forensic Analysis Perl is an extremely useful and powerful tool for performing computer forensic analysis. While there are applications available that let an examiner access acquired images and perform some modicum of visualization, there are relatively few tools that meet the specific needs of a specific examiner working on a specific case. This is where the use of Perl really shines through and becomes apparent. *Perl Scripting for Application Monitoring Working with enterprise-level Windows applications requires a great d...

Abstract: Organizations that have implemented Microsoft ® Windows Active Directory ® need to make sure that Active Directory is configured and operating properly. Even an Active Directory that is properly installed can easily have components fail or stop working, which causes problems with the Windows networking environment. An organization should run an Active Directory ® Health Check at least every quarter, with some very large enterprises that have made it a best practice to run subsets of the Active Directory Health Check daily. This Digital Short Cut guides an administrator through step-by-step procedures of running free tools and utilities against a Windows Active Directory (2000 or 2003) to validate the operations of components, such as AD replication, DNS configuration, File Replication Service (FRS), and the like. This guide identifies the tools the administrator should use. provides a selection of best practice parameters and settings from which to choose when running the tools. specifically identifies what to look for and how to resolve problems identified by the output of the tools and utilities. Performing an Active Directory ® Health Check (Digital Short Cut) is an absolute must-have, step-by-step guide for any organization that uses Windows Active Directory ® . It outlines methods for administrators to confirm AD is correctly operating and explains how free tools and utilities can be deployed to identify key components that are failing and need repaired.
