Abstract: The fable of the Emperor's New Clothes is a classic example of a conspiracy of silence, a situation where everyone refuses to acknowledge an obvious truth. But the denial of social realities -- whether incest, alcoholism, corruption, or even genocide -- is no fairy tale. In this book, the author sheds new light on the social and political underpinnings of silence and denial -- the keeping of "open secrets." The author shows that conspiracies of silence exist at every level of society, ranging from small groups to large corporations, from personal friendships to politics. Drawing on examples from newspapers and comedy shows to novels, children's stories, and film, the book travels back and forth across different levels of social life, and from everyday moments to large-scale historical events. At its core, the book helps us understand why we ignore truths that are known to all of us. The author shows how such conspiracies evolve, illuminating the social pressures that cause people to deny what is right before their eyes. We see how each conspirator's denial is symbiotically complemented by the others, and we learn that silence is usually more intense when there are more people conspiring -- and especially when there are significant power differences among them. He concludes by showing that the longer we ignore "elephants," the larger they loom in our minds, as each avoidance triggers an even greater spiral of denial. Social life in families, organizations, communities and even entire nations is full of situations where the emperor has no clothes. The book illuminates the dynamics behind these situations, revealing why we ignore obvious and alarming realities.

Abstract: Much of our knowledge about ourselves, and about the world in which we live, is based on a process of social comparison. Our tendency to appraise events, objects, people, and social groups by making comparisons has captured the interest of social psychologists for over half a century. This volume provides an up-to-date synthesis of the latest theoretical and empirical developments in social psychology through research on social comparison processes. With chapters by leading theorists and internationally renowned researchers, it provides invaluable information on the role of this process of comparison as it occurs within a single individual over time, between individuals, and between social groups. It also features an original international study testing the universality of the effects of social comparison on the self. This book will appeal to scholars and students alike and will serve as an important reference for the study of cognition, intergroup relations and culture

Abstract: Conflict, sadly, is part of our everyday life; experienced at home, in the workplace, on our TV screens. But is it an inevitable part of the fabric of our existence? In this volume, eight experts examine conflict at many levels, from the workings of genes to the evolution of galaxies. Evolutionary biologist David Haig examines why we disagree with ourselves, and psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen asks whether differences between the average male and female mind must necessarily lead to misunderstanding. Anthropologist Richard Wrangham explores why chimpanzees and humans have evolved to kill, while archaeologist Barry Cunliffe examines the roots of warfare. Political scientist Lisa Anderson analyses conflict in the Middle East, and broadcaster Kate Adie reflects on television reporting of war. The book concludes with industrial economist William Brown's discussion of conflict in labour relations, and an exploration of the creative and destructive effects of cosmic violence by physicist P. C. W. Davies

Abstract: The last two decades have seen an international explosion of interest in theories of mind, culture, and activity. This unique collection is the first to explicitly reach back to the tradition's original critical impulse within which the writings of Karl Marx played such a central role. Each author pushes this impulse further to address leading contemporary questions. It includes a diverse array of international scholars working from the fields of education, psychology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, communications, industrial relations, and business studies. Broken into three main sections - education, work, and everyday life - each chapter builds from an analysis of practice and learning as social cultural participation and historical change in relation to the concept of activity, contradiction, and struggle. This book offers insight into an important complex of overlapping practices and institutions to shed light on broader debates over such matters as the 'knowledge economy' and 'lifelong learning'

Abstract: Indigenous psychology is an emerging new field in psychology, focusing on psychological universals in social, cultural, and ecological contexts - Starting point for psychologists who wish to understand various cultures from their own ecological, historial, philosophical, and religious perspectives
Abstract: It was once assumed that the bedrock concepts of psychology held true for all the world s peoples. More recently, post-modern approaches to research have expanded on these Western models, building a psychology that takes into account the sociopolitical, historical, religious, ecological, and other indigenous factors that make every culture, as well as every person as agents of their own actions. Indigenous and Cultural Psychology surveys psychological and behavioral phenomena in native context in various developing and developed countries, with particular focus on Asia. An international team of 28 experts clarifies culture-specific concepts (such as paternalism and the Japanese concept of amae), models integrative methods of study, and dispels typical misconceptions about the field and its goals. The results reflect culturally sound frames of reference while remaining rigorous, systematic, and verifiable. These approaches provide a basis for the discovery of true psychological universals. Among the topics featured: - Scientific and philosophical bases of indigenous psychology - Comparisons of indigenous, cultural, and cross-cultural psychologies - Socialization, parent-child relationship, and family - The private and public self: concepts from East Asia, Europe, and the Americas - Interpersonal relationships: concepts from East Asia, Europe,, and the U.S. - Factors promoting educational achievement and organizational effectiveness in Asia - The growth and indigenization of psychology in developing and developed countries - Are any values, attitudes, beliefs and traits universal? Cross-national comparisons - The potential for indigenous psychology to lead to a global psychology With this book, the editors have captured a growing field at a crucial stage in its evolution. Indigenous and Cultural Psychology benefits students and researchers on two levels, offering groundbreaking findings on understudied concepts, and signaling future directions in universal knowledge.

Abstract: Since its initial publication in 1990, this book has become a key work of contemporary feminist theory, and an essential work for anyone interested in the study of gender, queer theory, or the politics of sexuality in culture. This is the text where the author began to advance the ideas that would go on to take life as "performativity theory," as well as some of the first articulations of the possibility for subversive gender practices. Overall, this book offers a powerful critique of heteronormativity and of the function of gender in the modern world

Abstract: 'Handbook of Research in International Human Resource Management represents a welcome contribution of IHRM literature and will be required readings for both novices and veteran researchers.' - Dana B. Minbaeva, British Journal of Industrial Relations ' ... a rich array of contributors including some of the biggest names in the field.' - Roger Bell, Delta Intercultural Academy. In providing an insightful overview of a wide range of global human resource issues facing MNCs, this pathbreaking Handbook highlights emergent topics and new research findings that could shape the field of future IHRM research. Theoretical discussion of the variables and processes that affect IHRM policies and practices is provided by renowned contributors with widely differing academic backgrounds, paradigmatic orientations, and theoretical and methodological approaches. They explore extensive subject matter including: the importance of linking IHRM policies and activities to organizational strategy, staffing, performance management, leadership development, and diversity management, international assignment and mobility issues, the role of IHRM in the management of global teams and cross-border joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions. Illustrating that IHRM research is theoretically eclectic, and drawing upon a range of paradigms and perspectives, this cutting-edge Handbook will be invaluable to academics and practitioners with an interest in human resource management, industrial and employment relations, management and international business

Note: This volume brings together a set of studies analyzing different aspects of food and agriculture in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This sector is of crucial importance to the MENA economies, especially in terms of employment. Agriculture is particularly important for the poor, both on the consumption side - a large part of their budget is allocated to food - and as a source of incomes as most of the poor live in rural areas where agriculture dominates. Agriculture production in MENA is severely constrained by water scarcity and low, irregular rainfall. Sustainability is a major concern in many parts of the region as the quality of land and water resources is deterioration and scarcity becomes more severe due to growing competition from other parts of the economy. The fact that the region relies on imports for a large share of its food consumption is a major concern for policymakers who view this as a threat to national food security and a source of political vulnerability. The studies included in this volume range from regional overview to micro studies. The chapters with a country focus cover issues that are recurrent in many MENA countries, giving them a broader relevance. The analyses cover policy issues in a wide range of areas - water, drought management, agriculture technology, producer and consumer subsidies, domestic food distribution, and foreign trade - and discusses how coordinated policies in these and other areas can contribute to more rapid, sustainable growth and poverty reduction

Abstract: Advances in Group Processes publishes theoretical analyses, reviews and theory based empirical chapters on group phenomena. Volume 23 includes papers that address fundamental issues relating to the Social Psychology of the Workplace. Chapter one uses a social identity perspective to understand the emergence of social capital and cooperative behavior in the workplace. The second and third chapters address issues of leadership. Chapter two reviews the social psychological literature on leadership, and contrasts this with leadership literatures which tend to be more applied (and positive) in nature. The third chapter offers a new theory of leadership that centers on the importance of leadership vision and self-sacrifice. As a group, these chapters address new empirical and theoretical problems at the cutting edge of workplace research. The next two chapters take on issues gender and inequality.
Abstract: Chapter four compares and contrasts two classes of theoretical explanations for gender inequality: economic theories of statistical discrimination and social psychological theories of status discrimination. After evaluating both programs of research, the paper illustrates how status based theories may be relaxed to encompass more of the empirical landscape. The next chapter examines how legitimacy (or a lack thereof) in male or female dominated organizations can produce salient gender stereotypes. The authors report data from a new laboratory experiment, and find support for a number of the basic relationships that are predicted. Readers interested in issues pertaining to gender in the workplace should find both chapters appealing. Issues of power and status are at the core of the next chapters. Chapter six asserts that the concept of hierarchy has been neglected in a number of research areas in the organizational domain.

Chapter seven illustrates how principles from network exchange theory and expectation states theory are broadly applicable to issues of leadership in organizations and academia. Together, these two chapters make a strong case that theories of power and status have much to offer in explaining the social psychology of the workplace. Two chapters address issues of legitimacy. Chapter eight explores how procedural justice and collective legitimacy jointly produce negative emotions in the workplace. This chapter develops a number of hypotheses regarding how it is that collective legitimacy impacts perceptions of procedural justice when people do not receive the rewards that they expect. , Chapter nine theoretically distills the relationship between legitimacy and trust, focusing specifically on ways that these processes interface with research on leadership in organizations. The final two chapters explore some of the broader social psychological issues of the workplace. Chapter ten draws on the larger identity maintenance literature to explain selective identity preference in occupational settings. Specifically, the paper details how individuals choose among potential future identities when all other benefits are essentially the same. The final chapter explores the emergence of propane markets in the southern United States, documenting the theoretical principles of market structure and cataloguing the problems such markets face. Overall, the volume includes papers that reflect a wide range of theoretical approaches to the social psychology of the workplace, and contributions by major scholars from multiple disciplines that work in the general area of group processes. , This book addresses gender and inequality in the workplace, considers leadership theories, and reviews the hierarchy structure of organizations

Abstract: To conduct this study on criminal and antisocial behavior, the authors devoted years to collecting data from a large community sample of first-generation subjects. Data were garnered throughout their early adolescence, twenties, and thirties as well as from these first-generation subjects' biological children during their own early adolescence. The results of these studies have profound implications for future research and methodology on deviant behavior.
Abstract: To conduct the study on criminal and antisocial behavior at the center of this volume, the authors devoted years to collecting data from a large community sample of first-generation subjects. Data were garnered throughout their early adolescence, twenties, and thirties as well as from these first-generation subjects biological children during their own early adolescence. The results of these studies have profound implications for future research and methodology on deviant behavior.Within the succinct, information-packed seven chapters of The Cycle of Deviant Behavior: Investigating Intergenerational Parallelism, the authors:- Present an integrative theory of deviant behavior, synthesizing social stress, social control, societal labeling, and other perspectives- Describe the intergenerational cycle of deviant behavior- Identify the relationship between deviance and its significant correlates (e.g., self-rejection)- Explain factors central to motivation toward deviant behaviors and to the continuance or discontinuance of these behaviors across generations- Review the literature on intergenerational parallelism and discuss the methodological limitations of current studies- By providing multiple models of parental transmission of values and culture and acknowledging the roles of intervening processes in life The Cycle of Deviant Behavior: Investigating Intergenerational Parallelism offers well-rounded insights to a wide range of professional readers, including sociologists, criminologists, and specialists in developmental and abnormal psychology and psychiatry.Written for:Sociologists, particularly those specializing in crime and deviance, and the life course, psychologists, particularly those specializing in developmental psychology, social psychology, abnormal psychology, and school psychology, criminologists, particularly the members of the American Society of CriminologyKeywords:antisocial behaviordeviant behaviorintergenerational parallelismsocial deviance

Overall, this book offers a powerful critique of heteronormativity and of the function of gender in the modern world.
Description / Table of Contents: 1. Subjects of sex/gender/desire -- 2. Prohibition, psychoanalysis, and the production of the heterosexual matrix -- 3. Subversive bodily acts.

Abstract: "Preventing Violence: Research and Evidence-Based Intervention Strategies is the only book available that offers current data-based analyses from leaders in violence prevention with a strong scientific perspective. Contributors examine a range of violence that occurs in our culture, including child maltreatment, youth violence, intimate partner violence, and suicide. Because evidence shows that a cycle of violence seems to begin with child maltreatment--which includes not only child physical and sexual abuse but also neglect--the contributors examine the possibility of connecting the disparate intervention areas in both research and practice and often draw on large-scale studies conducted by the government in their discussions of approaches to violence prevention. The suggested research and intervention programs highlight the role of cultural competence, a phenomenon whose importance has been determined empirically. Violence is a serious public health problem that can be prevented. This book offers methods to accomplish that goal through programs at all levels of society from school-based interventions to changes in government policy. Psychologists, public health officials, and policymakers working to stop violence will find it an invaluable resource for science-based solutions"--Jacket. Abstract: "In Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships, the authors explore the dimensions of sexuality and love. Drawing on their 40 years of combined clinical experience and a unique longitudinal study of couples and families, they propose that sexual problems are largely related to defenses acquired through painful childhood experiences. They describe the effects of the core defense, that is, the fantasy bond, which is an illusion of connection to the mother or primary caregiver. The fantasy bond is later transferred to a romantic partner and predisposes alienation in the relationship. The authors explain how secondary defenses in the form of critical internal "voices" support negative views of the self and others, interfering with closeness and intimacy. In clear language and conceptualization and through the liberal use of case material from therapy sessions, the authors show how individuals can be helped to overcome these challenges and become physically and emotionally closer to their partners. The authors provide therapists with a cognitive-affective-behavioral technique for treating couples. Sex and Love in Intimate Relationships is thought-provoking reading for anyone interested in what sustains a loving and fulfilling sexual relationship"--Jacket. Abstract: "Preventing Youth Violence in a Multicultural Society highlights the importance of creating culturally compatible interventions to stop violence among the youngest members of diverse populations. Chapters explore how ethnicity and culture can increase or decrease risk for violence among youth depending on contextual factors such as a disadvantaged upbringing, exposure to trauma, and acculturation status. Authors focus on the interaction between environmental conditions and the individual risk factors that foster youth violence. They begin by examining risk factors common to all groups of youth, such as feeling alienated from mainstream culture and searching for self-identity, and then focus on risk, resilience, and distinguishing factors among particular racial and ethnic groups, including Latino, African American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, American Indian, and White youth. The authors recommend interventions tailored to each group and offer advice on how to incorporate cultural competence into more general youth violence prevention programs. The social-ecological approach taken in this volume emphasizes the learned nature of aggression and violence, and many of the recommended interventions involve changing the context in which violence is taught, therefore truly encouraging long-term violence prevention. This practical, empirically supported book serves as an important resource to all mental health practitioners working in the field of youth violence"--Jacket. Abstract: An effective technique for data analysis in the social sciencesThe recent explosion in longitudinal data in the social sciences highlights the need for this timely publication. Latent Curve Models: A Structural Equation Perspective provides an effective technique to analyze latent curve models (LCMs). This type of data features random intercepts and slopes that permit each case in a sample to have a different trajectory over time. Furthermore, researchers can include variables to predict the parameters governing these trajectories. The authors synthesize a vast amount of research and findings a.

Abstract: Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships provides a synthesis of research on nonverbal communication as it applies to interpersonal interaction, focusing on the close relationships of friends, family, and romantic partners. Authors Laura K. Guerrero and Kory Floyd support the premise that nonverbal communication is a product of biology, social learning, and relational context. They overview six prominent nonverbal theories and show how each is related to bio-evolutionary or sociocultural perspectives. Their work focuses on various functions of nonverbal communication, emphasizing those that are most relevant to the initiation, maintenance, and dissolution of close relationships.   Throughout the book, Guerrero and Floyd highlight areas where research is either contradictory or inconclusive, hoping that in the years to come scholars will have a clearer understanding of these issues. The volume concludes with a discussion of practical implications that emerge from the scholarly literature on nonverbal communication in relationships - an essential component for understanding relationships in the real world.   Nonverbal Communication in Close Relationships makes an important contribution to the development of our understanding not only of relationship processes but also of the specific workings of nonverbal communication. It will serve as a springboard for asking new questions and advancing new theories about nonverbal communication. It is intended for scholars and advanced students in personal relationship study, social psychology, interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, family studies, and family communication. It will also be a helpful resource for researchers, clinicians, and couples searching for a better understanding of the complicated roles that nonverbal cues play in relationships.

Abstract: Artificial Knowing challenges the masculine slant in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) view of the world. Alison Adam admirably fills the large gap in science and technology studies by showing us that gender bias is inscribed in AI-based computer systems. Her treatment of feminist epistemology, focusing on the ideas of the knowing subject, the nature of knowledge, rationality and language, are bound to make a significant and powerful contribution to AI studies. Drawing from theories by Donna Haraway and Sherry Turkle, and using tools of feminist epistemology, Adam provides a sustained critique of AI which interestingly re-enforces many of the traditional criticisms of the AI project. Artificial Knowing is an esential read for those interested in gender studies, science and technology studies, and philosophical debates in AI.
