Kurzfassung: During the last third of the twentieth century, white supremacists moved, both literally and in the collective imagination, from midnight rides through Mississippi to broadband-wired cabins in Montana. But while rural Montana may be on the geographical fringe of the country, white supremacist groups were not pushed there, and they are far from "fringe elements" of society, as many Americans would like to believe. Evelyn Schlatter's startling analysis describes how many of the new white supremacist groups in the West have co-opted the region's mythology and environment based on longstanding beliefs about American character and Manifest Destiny to shape an organic, home-grown movement. Dissatisfied with the urbanized, culturally progressive coasts, disenfranchised by affirmative action and immigration, white supremacists have found new hope in the old ideal of the West as a land of opportunity waiting to be settled by self-reliant traditional families. Some even envision the region as a potential white homeland. Groups such as Aryan Nations, The Order, and Posse Comitatus use controversial issues such as affirmative action, anti-Semitism, immigration, and religion to create sympathy for their extremist views among mainstream whites—while offering a "solution" in the popular conception of the West as a place of freedom, opportunity, and escape from modern society. Aryan Cowboys exposes the exclusionist message of this "American" ideal, while documenting its dangerous appeal.

Kurzfassung: Published in Association with the German Historical Institute, Washington, D.C. Wilma and Georg Iggers came from different backgrounds, Wilma from a Jewish farming family from the German-speaking border area of Czechoslovakia, Georg from a Jewish business family from Hamburg. They both escaped with their parents from Nazi persecution to North America where they met as students. As a newly married couple they went to the American South where they taught in two historic Black colleges and were involved in the civil rights movement. In 1961 they began going to West Germany regularly not only to do research but also to further reconciliation between Jews and Germans, while at the same time in their scholarly work contributing to a critical confrontation with the German past. After overcoming first apprehensions, they soon felt Göttingen to be their second home, while maintaining their close involvements in America. After 1966 they frequently visited East Germany and Czechslovakia in an attempt to build bridges in the midst of the Cold War. The book relates their very different experiences of childhood and adolescence and then their lives together over almost six decades during which they endeavored to combine their roles as parents and scholars with their social and political engagements. In many ways this is not merely a dual biography but a history of changing conditions in America and Central Europe during turbulent times.

Kurzfassung: How does one explain the poverty and marginalization of a group that lives in a remarkably successful economy and peaceful society? A native anthropologist, the author provides critical insight into the dynamics of contemporary Mauritian society. In her meticulously researched study of ethnic, gender and racial discrimination in Mauritius, she addresses debates carried out in many developing societies on subaltern identities, ethnicity, poverty and social injustice. The book therefore also offers important empirical material for scholars interested in the wider Indian Ocean region and beyond.

Kurzfassung: Lela in Bali tells the story of an annual festival of eighteenth-century kingdoms in Northern Cameroon that was swept up in the migrations of marauding slave-raiders during the nineteenth century and carried south towards the coast. Lela was transformed first into a mounted durbar, like those of the Muslim states, before evolving in tandem with the German colonial project into a festival of arms. Reinterpreted by missionaries and post-colonial Cameroonians, Lela has become one of the most important of Cameroonian festivals and a crucial marker of identity within the state. Richard Fardon's recuperation of two hundred years of history is an essential contribution not only to Cameroonian studies but also to the broader understanding of the evolution of African cultures.

Based on extensive interviews and traditional Beti (Fang) poetry, in addition to German and French archival sources, the author of this readable study recreates the social structure of the Beti and their self-perceptions in pre-colonial times, their disruptive encounters with first German (1880-1918) and then French (1918-1960) colonialism, until Cameroon's independence.

Kurzfassung: The history of sexual morality in Ireland has been traditionally associated with repression. In the last two decades, however, repression seems to have given way to its exact opposite. But where did this "repression" originate? And how can we account for this sudden and sweeping transformation in sexual mores? Based on solid ethnographic and historical analysis of sexual morality in rural Ireland, augmented by comparative data from Papua New Guinea, and being informed by from Freud's emblematic concept of repression, the author draws new conclusions that not only apply to the specific case of his Irish material but shed new light on the specific nature of an anthropological approach to the study of human societies.

Kurzfassung: The essays assembled in this book exemplify the way political anthropologists address a range of problems that deeply affect people throughout the world. The authors draw their inspiration from the work of Canadian anthropologist Richard B. Lee, and, like him, they are concerned with understanding and acting upon issues of "indigenous rights"; the impact of colonialism, postcolonial state formation, and neoliberalism on local communities and cultures; the process of culture change; what the history and politics of egalitarian societies reveal about issues of "human nature" or "social evolution"; and how peoples in southern Africa are affected by and responding to the most recent crisis in their midst, the spread of AIDS. The authors in this volume discuss the state of a range of contemporary debates in the field that in various ways extend the political, theoretical, and empirical issues that have animated Lee's work. In addition, the book provides readers with important contemporary Kalahari studies, as well as "classic" works on foraging societies.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication describes the features and functionality of Workplace Forms and each of its component products. After introducing the products and providing an overview of features and functionality, we discuss the underlying product architecture and address the concept of integration. To help potential users, architects, and developers better understand how to develop and implement a forms application, we introduce a specific scenario based on a "Sales Quotation Approval" application. Using this base scenario as a foundation, we describe in detail how to build an application that captures data in a form, then applies specific business logic and workflow to gain approval for a specific product sales quotation. Throughout the scenario, we build upon the complexity of the application and introduce increasing integration points with other data systems. Ultimately, we demonstrate how an IBM Workplace Forms application can integrate with WebSphere Portal, IBM DB2 Content Manager, and Lotus Domino. Note: The code used for building this sample scenario application is available for download. For specific information about how to download the sample code, please refer to Appendix A. Kurzfassung: This edited volume on tourism in the Middle East embodies a multi-discursive approach to the study of tourism in the region offering not only different perspectives but qualifying local knowledge and realities. The book re-examines the discourse of tourism within geopolitical contemporary regional realities. The book re-conceptualizes tourism as a discourse linked to heritage and identity construction, national and global economies, and development of local communities. Alternatively, a new discursive approach to the understanding of tourism emerges out of invigorating and stimulating latent regional realities and the social histories of various towns, villages, and cultural landscapes within the contested and politically-charged region of the Middle East. The book investigates issues of national identity, authenticity, definition of heritage, representation of cultures and regions, community & tourism development, urban tourism, heritage conservation & tourism, and tourism related investments through a new vision for the region that transcends current geopolitics or national and formal historiographies.

Kurzfassung: After thirty years of military rule and state-sponsored violence, Guatemala reinstated civilian control and began rebuilding democratic institutions in 1986. Responding to these changes, Guatemalan women began organizing to gain an active role in the national body politic and restructure traditional relations of power and gender. This pioneering study examines the formation and evolution of the Guatemalan women's movement and assesses how it has been affected by, and has in turn affected, the forces of democratization and globalization that have transformed much of the developing world. Susan Berger pursues three hypotheses in her study of the women's movement. She argues that neoliberal democratization has led to the institutionalization of the women's movement and has encouraged it to turn from protest politics to policy work and to helping the state impose its neoliberal agenda. She also asserts that, while the influences of dominant global discourses are apparent, local definitions of femininity, sexuality, and gender equity and rights have been critical to shaping the form, content, and objectives of the women's movement in Guatemala. And she identifies a counter-discourse to globalization that is slowly emerging within the movement. Berger's findings vigorously reveal the manifold complexities that have attended the development of the Guatemalan women's movement.

Kurzfassung: This text presents the most important and influential social psychological theories and research programs in contemporary sociology. Original chapters by the scholars who initiated and developed these theoretical perspectives provide full descriptions of each theory, its background, development, and future. The first four chapters cover general approaches, organized around fundamental principles and issues-symbolic interaction, social exchange, distributive justice, and rational choice. The following chapters focus on specific research programs and theories, examining identity, affect, comparison processes, power and dependence, social exchange, status construction, and legitimacy. A concluding chapter provides an analysis of and commentary on the state of the theoretical programs in sociological social psychology. Contributors: Peter J. Kurzfassung: The term “Caucasian” is a curious invention of the modern age. Originating in 1795, the word identifies both the peoples of the Caucasus Mountains region as well as those thought to be “Caucasian”. Bruce Baum explores the history of the term and the category of the “Caucasian race” more broadly in the light of the changing politics of racial theory and notions of racial identity. With a comprehensive sweep that encompasses the understanding of "race" even before the use of the term “Caucasian,” Baum traces the major trends in scientific and intellectual understandings of “race” from the Middle Ages to the present day. Baum’s conclusions make an unprecedented attempt to separate modern science and politics from a long history of racial classification. He offers significant insights into our understanding of race and how the “Caucasian race” has been authoritatively invented, embraced, displaced, and recovered throughout our history.

Kurzfassung: 2007 Choice Outstanding Academic TitleAt the funeral of Matthew Shepard—the young Wyoming man brutally murdered for being gay—the Reverend Fred Phelps led his parishioners in protest, displaying signs with slogans like “Matt Shepard rots in Hell,” “Fags Die God Laughs,” and “God Hates Fags.” In counter-protest, activists launched an “angel action,” dressing in angel costumes, with seven-foot high wings, and creating a visible barrier so one would not have to see the hateful signs.Though long thought of as one of the most virulently anti-gay genres of contemporary American politics and culture, in God Hates Fags, Michael Cobb maintains that religious discourses have curiously figured as the most potent and pervasive forms of queer expression and activism throughout the twentieth century. Cobb focuses on how queers have assumed religious rhetoric strategically to respond to the violence done against them, alternating close readings of writings by James Baldwin, Tennessee Williams, Jean Toomer, Dorothy Allison, and Stephen Crane with critical legal and political analyses of Supreme Court Cases and anti-gay legislation. He also pays deep attention to the political strategies, public declarations, websites, interviews, and other media made by key religious right organizations that have mounted the most successful regulations and condemnations of homosexuality.

Kurzfassung: Far from being a blank space on the Jewish map, or a void in the Jewish cultural world, post-Shoah Europe is a place where Jewry has continued to develop, even though it is facing different challenges and opportunities than elsewhere. Living on a continent characterized by highly diverse patterns of culture, language, history, and relations to Jews, European Jewry mirrors that kaleidoscopic diversity. This volume explores such key questions as the new roles for Jews in Europe; models of Jewish community organization in Europe; concepts of diaspora and galut; a European-Jewish way of life in the era of globalization; and European Jews' relationship to Israel and to non-Jews. Some contributions highlight experiences of Jews in Britain, Sweden, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Germany, and the Netherlands. Helping us to understand the special and common characteristics of European Jewry, this collection offers a valuable contribution to the continued rebuilding of Jewish life in the postwar era.

Kurzfassung: The image of the West looms large in the American imagination. Yet the history of American Jewry and particularly of American Jewish women—has been heavily weighted toward the East. Jewish Women Pioneering the Frontier Trail rectifies this omission as the first full book to trace the history and contributions of Jewish women in the American West.In many ways, the Jewish experience in the West was distinct. Given the still-forming social landscape, beginning with the 1848 Gold Rush, Jews were able to integrate more fully into local communities than they had in the East. Jewish women in the West took advantage of the unsettled nature of the region to “open new doors” for themselves in the public sphere in ways often not yet possible elsewhere in the country. Women were crucial to the survival of early communities, and made distinct contributions not only in shaping Jewish communal life but outside the Jewish community as well. Western Jewish women's level of involvement at the vanguard of social welfare and progressive reform, commerce, politics, and higher education and the professions is striking given their relatively small numbers. This engaging work—full of stories from the memoirs and records of Jewish pioneer women—illuminates the pivotal role these women played in settling America's Western frontier.

Kurzfassung: Paula S. Fass, a pathbreaker in children’s history and the history of education, turns her attention in Children of a New World to the impact of globalization on children’s lives, both in the United States and on the world stage. Globalization, privatization, the rise of the “work-centered” family, and the triumph of the unregulated marketplace, she argues, are revolutionizing the lives of children today.Fass begins by considering the role of the school as a fundamental component of social formation, particularly in a nation of immigrants like the United States. She goes on to examine children as both creators of culture and objects of cultural concern in America, evident in the strange contemporary fear of and fascination with child abduction, child murder, and parental kidnapping. Finally, Fass moves beyond the limits of American society and brings historical issues into the present and toward the future, exploring how American historical experience can serve as a guide to contemporary globalization as well as how globalization is altering the experience of American children and redefining childhood.Clear and scholarly, serious but witty, Children of a New World provides a foundation for future historical investigations while adding to our current understanding of the nature of modern childhood, the role of education for national identity, the crisis of family life, and the influence of American concepts of childhood on the world’s definitions of children's rights. As a new generation comes of age in a global world, it is a vital contribution to the study of childhood and globalization.

Kurzfassung: Henry Jenkins at Authors@Google (video)Vaudevillians used the term "the wow climax" to refer to the emotional highpoint of their acts-a final moment of peak spectacle following a gradual building of audience's emotions. Viewed by most critics as vulgar and sensationalistic, the vaudeville aesthetic was celebrated by other writers for its vitality, its liveliness, and its playfulness. The Wow Climax follows in the path of this more laudatory tradition, drawing out the range of emotions in popular culture and mapping what we might call an aesthetic of immediacy. It pulls together a spirited range of work from Henry Jenkins, one of our most astute media scholars, that spans different media (film, television, literature, comics, games), genres (slapstick, melodrama, horror, exploitation cinema), and emotional reactions (shock, laughter, sentimentality). Whether highlighting the sentimentality at the heart of the Lassie franchise, examining the emotional experiences created by horror filmmakers like Wes Craven and David Cronenberg and avant garde artist Matthew Barney, or discussing the emerging aesthetics of video games, these essays get to the heart of what gives popular culture its emotional impact.

Kurzfassung: A bold and contemporary discourse of the intersection of disability studies and queer studiesCrip Theory attends to the contemporary cultures of disability and queerness that are coming out all over. Both disability studies and queer theory are centrally concerned with how bodies, pleasures, and identities are represented as "normal" or as abject, but Crip Theory is the first book to analyze thoroughly the ways in which these interdisciplinary fields inform each other.Drawing on feminist theory, African American and Latino/a cultural theories, composition studies, film and television studies, and theories of globalization and counter-globalization, Robert McRuer articulates the central concerns of crip theory and considers how such a critical perspective might impact cultural and historical inquiry in the humanities. Crip Theory puts forward readings of the Sharon Kowalski story, the performance art of Bob Flanagan, and the journals of Gary Fisher, as well as critiques of the domesticated queerness and disability marketed by the Millennium March, or Bravo TV's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. McRuer examines how dominant and marginal bodily and sexual identities are composed, and considers the vibrant ways that disability and queerness unsettle and re-write those identities in order to insist that another world is possible.

Kurzfassung: The Pilgrims and Puritans did not arrive on the shores of New England alone. Nor did African men and women, brought to the Americas as slaves. Though it would be hard to tell from the historical record, European colonists and African slaves had children, as did the indigenous families whom they encountered, and those children's life experiences enrich and complicate our understanding of colonial America.Through essays, primary documents, and contemporary illustrations, Children in Colonial America examines the unique aspects of childhood in the American colonies between the late sixteenth and late eighteenth centuries. The twelve original essays observe a diverse cross-section of children-from indigenous peoples of the east coast and Mexico to Dutch-born children of the Plymouth colony and African-born offspring of slaves in the Caribbean-and explore themes including parenting and childrearing practices, children's health and education, sibling relations, child abuse, mental health, gender, play, and rites of passage.Taken together, the essays and documents in Children in Colonial America shed light on the ways in which the process of colonization shaped childhood, and in turn how the experience of children affected life in colonial America.

Kurzfassung: This study examines the Indonesian Muslim intellectuals of the twentieth century and their approaches in dealing with the problems that faced Indonesian Muslims at that time. Like their intellectual ancestors in Islamic history, these recent Indonesian intellectuals carefully examined the society in which they lived. On one level they studied the original and historical teachings of Islam and attempted to fit that message to the Southeast Asian region. On another level they reacted to the great waves of culture that arrived from Europe, North America, and Asia throughout the twentieth century. They did all of this at a time when the Indonesian nation was forming itself, beginning with the nationalist movements of the early part of the century when the Dutch controlled the archipelago, and continuing into the last half of the century when Indonesia was an independent nation.

Kurzfassung: Wars in the industrial age kill large numbers of people. What do societies involved in these conflicts do with all the corpses? How do they show them respect? How do they dispose of them? What is their attitude to the bodies of the enemies? In the 19th century, those who died on the battlefield were pushed into mass graves, their identities unknown. Today, their remains are held in such high esteem that they are tracked down in order that last respects might be paid. As a historical account of the way in which war and death intersect, this book describes the complex attitude societies have towards death. Lured by the concept of eternal youth, tempted to deny death as well as physical decay, faced with longer life expectancy, we retain the hope of going off to war without loss of life. But does not our own expectation of zero death" imply "more deaths" for the other side?"...

Kurzfassung: The workings of Western intelligence in our day--whether in politics or the arts, in the humanities or the church--are as troubling as they are mysterious, leading to the questions: Where are we going? What in the world were we thinking? By exploring the history of four "cultures" so deeply embedded in Western history that we rarely see their instrumental role in politics, religion, education, and the arts, this timely book provides a broad framework for addressing these questions in a fresh way.

Kurzfassung: Not for Sale examines key dimensions of the current assault against communal resources by relentless commodification and privatization. Gordon Laxer and Dennis Soron include chapters by social scientists who explore ways in which progressive projects of "reclaiming" the commons involve confronting the capitalist drive to commodify all aspects of existence, including human body parts, water, labour, knowledge, and even the air we breathe. The book argues that crucial areas of social and natural life should not be treated as commodities regulated by undemocratic markets. Not for Sale discusses the alternatives presented by local, national, and international struggles to decommodify and democratize as many spheres of life as possible.

Kurzfassung: How does a 'national' popular culture form and grow over time in a nation comprised of immigrants? How have immigrants used popular culture in America, and how has it used them?Immigration and American Popular Culture looks at the relationship between American immigrants and the popular culture industry in the twentieth century. Through a series of case studies, Rachel Rubin and Jeffrey Melnick uncover how specific trends in popular culture-such as portrayals of European immigrants as gangsters in 1930s cinema, the zoot suits of the 1940s, the influence of Jamaican Americans on rap in the 1970s, and cyberpunk and Asian American zines in the1990s-have their roots in the complex socio-political nature of immigration in America.Supplemented by a timeline of key events and extensive suggestions for further reading, Immigration and American Popular Culture offers at once a unique history of twentieth century U.S. immigration and an essential introduction to the major approaches to the study of popular culture. Melnick and Rubin go further to demonstrate how completely and complexly the processes of immigration and cultural production have been intertwined, and how we cannot understand one without the other.

Kurzfassung: The Housing Divide examines the generational patterns in New York City's housing market and neighborhoods along the lines of race and ethnicity. The book provides an in-depth analysis of many immigrant groups in New York, especially providing an understanding of the opportunities and discriminatory practices at work from one generation to the next. Through a careful read of such factors as home ownership, housing quality, and neighborhood rates of crime, welfare enrollment, teenage pregnancy, and educational achievement, Emily Rosenbaum and Samantha Friedman provide a detailed portrait of neighborhood life and socio-economic status for the immigrants of New York. The book paints an important, if disturbing, picture. The authors argue that not only are Blacks-regardless of generation-disadvantaged relative to members of other racial/ethnic groups in their ability to obtain housing in high-quality neighborhoods, but that housing and neighborhood conditions actually decline over generations. Rosenbaum and Friedman's findings suggest that the future of racial inequality in this country will increasingly isolate Blacks from all other groups. In other words, the "color line" may be shifting from a line separating Blacks from Whites to one separating Blacks from all non-Blacks.

Kurzfassung: Dating from the sixteenth century, there were hundreds of shtetls-Jewish settlements-in Eastern Europe that were home to a large and compact population that differed from their gentile, mostly peasant neighbors in religion, occupation, language, and culture. The shtetls were different in important respects from previous types of Jewish settlements in the Diaspora in that Jews had rarely formed a majority in the towns in which they lived. This was not true of the shtetl, where Jews sometimes comprised 80% or more of the population. While the shtetl began to decline during the course of the nineteenth century, it was the Holocaust which finally destroyed it.During the last thirty years the shtetl has attracted a growing amount of scholarly attention, though gross generalizations and romanticized nostalgia continue to affect how the topic is treated. This volume takes a new look at this most important facet of East European Jewish life. It helps to correct the notion that the shtetl was an entirely Jewish world and shows the ways in which the Jews of the shtetl interacted both with their co-religionists and with their gentile neighbors. The volume includes chapters on the history of the shtetl, its myths and realities, politics, gender dynamics, how the shtetl has been (mis)represented in literature, and the changes brought about by World War I and the Holocaust, among others. Kurzfassung: Waiting for Macedonia gives insight into one of the most moving moments in post-war European history: the hope for a new Europe in the years following the collapse of communism. In this ethnography, Thiessen explores the different ways in which identity has been negotiated in Macedonia since the disintegration of Yugoslavia. In contrast to more familiar approaches to the Balkans-which emphasize tradition, rural life, and women in the contexts of kinship and marriage-Thiessen here investigates the everyday habits of a group of young professional women in Skopje. Using research data spanning eight years (1988-96), she traces key aspects of their life, including family relationships, television and shopping habits, cafe life, and attitudes to work. At the same time, she also raises larger questions about Macedonian, Balkan, and Eastern European notions of identity, suggesting that western discourses about former socialist countries may in turn be influencing the way young urban Macedonians see themselves.

Kurzfassung: In Race, Rights, and the Asian American Experience, Angelo N. Ancheta demonstrates how United States civil rights laws have been framed by a black-white model of race that typically ignores the experiences of other groups, including Asian Americans. When racial discourse is limited to antagonisms between black and white, Asian Americans often find themselves in a racial limbo, marginalized or unrecognized as full participants. Ancheta examines legal and social theories of racial discrimination, ethnic differences in the Asian American population, nativism, citizenship, language, school desegregation, and affirmative action. In the revised edition of this influential book, Ancheta also covers post-9/11 anti-Asian sentiment and racial profiling. He analyzes recent legal cases involving political empowerment, language rights, human trafficking, immigrant rights, and affirmative action in higher education-many of which move the country farther away from the ideals of racial justice. On a more positive note, he reports on the progress Asian Americans have made in the corporate sector, politics, the military, entertainment, and academia. A skillful mixture of legal theories, court cases, historical events, and personal insights, this revised edition brings fresh insights to U.S. civil rights from an Asian American perspective.

Kurzfassung: This Biographical Dictionary describes the lives, works and aspirations of more than 150 women and men who were active in, or part of, women's movements and feminisms in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe. Thus, it challenges the widely held belief that there was no historical feminism in this part of Europe. These innovative and often moving biographical portraits not only show that feminists existed here, but also that they were widespread and diverse, and included Romanian princesses, Serbian philosophers and peasants, Latvian and Slovakian novelists, Albanian teachers, Hungarian Christian social workers and activists of the Catholic women's movement, Austrian factory workers, Bulgarian feminist scientists and socialist feminists, Russian radicals, philanthropists, militant suffragists and Bolshevik activists, prominent writers and philosophers of the Ottoman era, as well as Turkish republican leftist political activists and nationalists, internationally recognized Greek feminist leaders, Estonian pharmacologists and science historians, Slovenian 'literary feminists,' Czech avant-garde painters, Ukrainian feminist scholars, Polish and Czech Senate Members, and many more. Their stories together constitute a rich tapestry of feminist activity and redress a serious imbalance in the historiography of women's movements and feminisms.

Kurzfassung: Taboo Memories, Diasporic Voices brings together for the first time a selection of trailblazing essays by Ella Shohat, an internationally renowned theorist of postcolonial and cultural studies of Iraqi-Jewish background. Written over the past two decades, these twelve essays-some classic, some less known, some new-trace a powerful intellectual trajectory as Shohat rigorously teases out the consequences of a deep critique of Eurocentric epistemology, whether to rethink feminism through race, nationalism through ethnicity, or colonialism through sexuality.Shohat's critical method boldly transcends disciplinary and geographical boundaries. She explores such issues as the relations between ethnic studies and area studies, the paradoxical repercussions for audio-visual media of the "graven images" taboo, the allegorization of race through the refiguring of Cleopatra, the allure of imperial popular culture, and the gender politics of medical technologies. She also examines the resistant poetics of exile and displacement; the staging of historical memory through the commemorations of the two 1492s, the anomalies of the "national" in Zionist discourse, the implications of the hyphen in the concept "Arab-Jew," and the translation of the debates on orientalism and postcolonialism across geographies. Taboo Memories, Diasporic Voices not only illuminates many of the concerns that have animated the study of cultural politics over the past two decades; it also points toward new scholarly possibilities.

Kurzfassung: This study, which is an updated, extended, and revised version of the out-of-print 1993 edition, reassesses the traditional stereotype of the place of the Balkans in the model of the European family in the nineteenth century on the basis of new source material and by synthesizing existing research. The work first analyzes family structure and demographic variables as they appear in population registers and other sources, and the impact of these findings on theoretical syntheses of the European family pattern. On most features, such as population structure, marriage and nuptiality, birth and fertility, death and mortality rates, family and household size and structure, as well as inheritance patterns, the Balkans show an enormous deal of internal variety. This variability is put in a comparative European context by matching the quantifiable results with comparable figures and patterns in other parts of Europe. The second section of the book is a contribution to the long-standing debate over the zadruga, the complex, collective, joint or extended family in the Balkans. Finally, the book considers ideology and mythology and the ways it has adversely affected scholarship on the family, and broadly on population history.

Kurzfassung: The essays in Marriage Proposals envision a variety of scenarios in which adults would continue to join themselves together seeking permanent companionship and sustenance, linking sexual intimacy to a long commitment, usually caring for each other, and building new families. What would disappear are the legal consequences associated with marriage. No joint income tax return; no immigration privileges like the “fiancée visa” or the right to bring in a husband or wife; no special statuses for prison visits or hospital decisions; no prerogative to remain silent in court by claiming “confidential marital communications”; no pension entitlements; no marital benefits and detriments regarding criminal or civil liability. The anthology makes a unique contribution amid the two marriage furors of the day: same-sex marriage and the Bush Administration's “marriage movement” (that marrying is good and more marriages would be better for society). Abolishing the legal category of marriage is the only policy suggestion in current American discourse that speaks to both causes. Activists on both sides of the same-sex marriage fight, along with marriage movement partisans, all seek improvement through law reform. Marriage Proposals gives them a viable reform—abolition of marriage as a legal status—for fighting battles in the courtroom and the streets.Contributors include Anita Bernstein, Peggy Cooper Davis, Martha Albertson Fineman, Linda C. McClain, Marshall Miller, Lawrence Rosen, Mary Lyndon Shanley, and Dorian Solot.

Kurzfassung: Through the colorful family histories and rich detail of the Zimmern Chronicle, historian Judith Hurwich examines marriage, family, and sexuality among the early modern German nobility. She uses the house chronicles of the Zimmern family and the families of the counts and barons with whom they intermarried to investigate marriage and nonmarital sexuality in the southwest German nobility in the late fifteenth and the sixteenth centuries. Along with a deeper look at women’s roles as wives, mothers, and concubines, Noble Strategies shines a light on the intimate lives of the early modern German elite.

Kurzfassung: Situated on the geographic margins of two nations, yet imagined as central to each, Transylvania has long been a site of nationalist struggles. Since the fall of communism, these struggles have been particularly intense in Cluj, Transylvania's cultural and political center. Yet heated nationalist rhetoric has evoked only muted popular response. The citizens of Cluj--the Romanian-speaking majority and the Hungarian-speaking minority--have been largely indifferent to the nationalist claims made in their names. Based on seven years of field research, this book examines not only the sharply polarized fields of nationalist politics--in Cluj, Transylvania, and the wider region--but also the more fluid terrain on which ethnicity and nationhood are experienced, enacted, and understood in everyday life. In doing so the book addresses fundamental questions about ethnicity: where it is, when it matters, and how it works. Bridging conventional divisions of academic labor, Rogers Brubaker and his collaborators employ perspectives seldom found together: historical and ethnographic, institutional and interactional, political and experiential. Further developing the argument of Brubaker's groundbreaking Ethnicity without Groups, the book demonstrates that it is ultimately in and through everyday experience--as much as in political contestation or cultural articulation--that ethnicity and nationhood are produced and reproduced as basic categories of social and political life.

Kurzfassung: Revenge of the Domestic examines gender relations in East Germany from 1945 to the 1970s, focusing especially on the relationship between ordinary women, the Communist Party, and the state created by the Communists, the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The book weaves together personal stories from interviews, statistical material, and evidence from archival research in Berlin, Potsdam, Leipzig, Merseburg, and Chemnitz to reconstruct the complex interplay between state policy toward women and the family on the one hand, and women's reactions to policy on the other. Donna Harsch demonstrates that women resisted state decisions as citizens, wageworkers, mothers, wives, and consumers, and that in every guise they maneuvered to overcome official neglect of the family. As state dependence on female employment increased, the book shows, the Communists began to respond to the insistence of women that the state pay attention to the family. In fits and starts, the party state begrudgingly retooled policy in a more consumerist and family-oriented direction. This "domestication" was partial, ambivalent, and barely acknowledged from above. It also had ambiguous, arguably regressive, effects on the private gender arrangements and attitudes of East Germans. Nonetheless, the economic and social consequences of this domestication were cumulatively powerful and, the book argues, gradually undermined the foundations of the GDR.

Kurzfassung: When the fighting of the Mexican Revolution died down in 1920, the national government faced the daunting task of building a cohesive nation. It had to establish control over a disparate and needy population and prepare the country for global economic competition. As part of this effort, the government enlisted the energy of artists and intellectuals in cultivating a distinctly Mexican identity. It devised a project for the incorporation of indigenous peoples and oversaw a vast, innovative program in the arts. The Eagle and the Virgin examines the massive nation-building project Mexico undertook between 1920 and 1940.Contributors explore the nation-building efforts of the government, artists, entrepreneurs, and social movements; their contradictory, often conflicting intersection; and their inevitably transnational nature. Scholars of political and social history, communications, and art history describe the creation of national symbols, myths, histories, and heroes to inspire patriotism and transform workers and peasants into efficient, productive, gendered subjects. They analyze the aesthetics of nation building made visible in murals, music, and architecture; investigate state projects to promote health, anticlericalism, and education; and consider the role of mass communications, such as cinema and radio, and the impact of road building. They discuss how national identity was forged among social groups, specifically political Catholics, industrial workers, middle-class women, and indigenous communities. Most important, the volume weighs in on debates about the tension between the eagle (the modernizing secular state) and the Virgin of Guadalupe (the Catholic defense of faith and morality). It argues that despite bitter, violent conflict, the symbolic repertoire created to promote national identity and memory making eventually proved capacious enough to allow the eagle and the virgin to coexist peacefully.Contributors. Kurzfassung: The IBM System i family, which encompasses the IBM AS/400, eServer iSeries, eServer i5, and System i5, has a successful 24-year history of satisfying hundreds of customers' requirements, thanks to its developers. DB2 for i5/OS, also known as DB2 Universal Database for iSeries, is deeply rooted in the architecture and heritage of the AS/400 and its predecessor System/38. The database has undergone significant changes over the years to maintain its competitive advantage including fundamental changes to the structure of the database to compete successfully in the industry. In doing so, IBM Rochester launched a project to re-engineer and redesign important components of the database. The redesigned components were architected using object-oriented design concepts and then implemented using object-oriented implementation techniques. The query optimizer was one of the key components that was redesigned. This IBM Redbooks publication gives a broad understanding of the architectural changes of the database concerning the query optimizer. It explains the following concepts: The architecture of the query optimizer The data access methods used by the query optimizer The Statistics Manager included in V5R2 The feedback message changes of the query optimizer Some performance measurements Changes and enhancements made in V5R4 The objective of this book is to help you minimize any SQL or database performance issues when upgrading to OS/400 V5R2 or V5R3 or to IBM i5/OS V5R4. Prior to reading this book, you should have some knowledge of database performance and query optimization.

Kurzfassung: Having more, and more current, information is fast becoming a requirement for business survival. The need permeates the enterprise because it enables proactive decision-making for problem avoidance, rather than reactive problem impact minimization. And that is the key. Thus the need for, and focus on, is real-time. Companies no longer have the long strategic time-frames in which to plan, design, and manage their business processes. Yearly revenue goals and measurements are fast becoming quarterly goals and measurements. Investors and share-holders are more demanding. They are more critical, and less forgiving, of missed performance goals. And these demands are coming at a time when the volume of data is growing, there is an increase in business mergers and acquisitions, the use of strategic outsourcing is growing, and there is an increasing requirement for faster and faster turnaround on information requests. This has put an enormous burden on the information technology (IT) organizations. And most of this change is centered around business intelligence, because that is the environment responsible for providing information for management decision-making. This IBM Redbooks publication explores the techniques and capabilities for evolving to a real-time enterprise. It also demonstrates approaches for that evolution and provides examples to help guide you in developing your strategy and implementation methodology to become a real-time enterprise.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication is about using Java on z/OS to develop, deploy, and run stand-alone and batch applications. Java has certainly become the most popular programming language, and it is the language of choice for many enterprise applications today. This is the result of many advancements in the language itself as well as related technologies and tools that enable users to develop and run cost-effective, scalable, high-performance solutions. IBM System z servers provide comprehensive support for deploying Java applications while providing the traditional quality of service, advanced security, and scalability that users have come to expect from this server family. IBM System zApplication Assist Processors (zAAP) further enhance the ability of an enterprise to implement complex and heavy workload applications on System z in a cost-effective and reliable manner. There are many technical and business-oriented documents that describe the value of running J2EE applications on System z using WebSphere Application Server. However, less attention has been given to running stand-alone Java applications. This book shows how Java can leverage the power of IBM System z to run stand-alone and batch applications. This book is a technical guideline for Java application developers who do not have prior experience with the System z operating environment, as well as System z operators who are new to the world of Java because of the inevitable transition occurring in the IT industry. Chapters in this book are designed to be self-contained so that they can be read in any order. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: Today, mainframe computers play a central role in the daily operations of most of the world’s largest corporations. While other forms of computing are used in business in various capacities, the mainframe occupies a prominent place in today’s e-business environment. In banking, finance, health care, insurance, utilities, government, and a multitude of other public and private enterprises, the mainframe computer continues to provide the foundation of large-scale computing to modern business. The reasons for mainframe use are many, but generally fall into one or more of the following categories: capacity, scalability, integrity and security, availability, access to large amounts of data, system management, and autonomic capabilities. This IBM Redbooks publication is designed for readers who already possess a basic knowledge of mainframe computing, but need a clearer understanding of how these concepts relate to mainframe planning, implementation, and operation. For readers who need more introductory information about mainframe concepts, usage, and architecture, we recommend that you complete Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics, SG24-6366, prior to starting this book. And for more detailed information about z/OS programming topics, refer to the 11-volume book series ABCs of z/OS System Programming.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication provides IMS performance monitoring and tuning information. This book differs from previous IMS performance and tuning IBM Redbooks in that there is less emphasis on the internal workings of IMS and more information about why and how certain options can affect the performance of IMS. Most of the information in the previous book IMS Version 7 Performance Monitoring and Tuning Update, SG24-6404, is still valid, and in most cases, continues to be valid in any future versions of IMS. This book is not an update or rewrite but instead attempts to be more of a guide than a reference. As such, the team gathered experiences and data from actual production environments as well as from IBM benchmarks and solicited input from experts in as many areas as possible. You should be able to find valuable new information and perhaps validate things you might have questioned. Hardware and software characteristics are constantly changing, but hopefully the information that you find here provides a basis to help you react to change and to keep your IMS running efficiently. In this book, we introduce methods and tools for monitoring and tuning IMS systems, and in addition to IMS TM and DB system-wide performance considerations, we dedicate separate chapters for application considerations, IMS and DB2 interoperability, the Parallel Sysplex environment, and On Demand considerations.

Kurzfassung: DB2 for z/OS takes advantage of data sharing technology in a z Parallel Sysplex to provide applications with full concurrent read and write access to shared DB2 data. Data sharing allows users on multiple DB2 subsystems, members of a data sharing group, to share a single copy of the DB2 catalog, directory, and user data sets. Data sharing provides improvements to availability and capacity without impacting existing applications. The road to data sharing might seem arduous to a novice user, but once you have started to learn terminology and gain basic understanding, things will become much easier. This IBM Redbooks publication is meant to facilitate your journey towards data sharing by providing a cookbook approach to the main tasks in enabling data sharing and workload balancing. It does not have all the answers, because it is a brief summary of a large field of knowledge, but it contains the key elements and it points you in the right direction to get more details. Throughout this document we assume that your sysplex environment is set up and a DB2 subsystem exists at a currently supported level.

We conform to IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.1 terminology as much as possible, although for some direct references to screen shots, we use the terminology that is shown in the figure. The product is installed using the IBM Configuration Tool. This is explained for new users who want to install IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE, because the process is somewhat different from standard IBM products that are installed on z/OS. The concept of runtime environment is explained here as well. On the operation side of IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE, we discuss problem determination and tracing concepts and facilities that are available for IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE, as well as performance considerations. As IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE is meant to monitor performance of the system, its overhead should not affect overall system performance. Last but not least, we offer sample usage scenarios of performance management using IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE products.

Kurzfassung: Conducting business via the Web and remaining open for business 24 hours a day, seven days a week is now commonplace. Customers come in with unexpected workloads through the Web and operate in a self-service fashion with mostly context-sensitive metadata to guide them. The strong requirement is availability. However, even with new Web applications, most of the core business systems considerations still apply, and performance is critical. Technology has been accelerating for mainframe systems. They had become adept at providing business resiliency accommodating strategic software that has been around for the last several decades such as IMS™ , DB2® , and CICS® , and they have also become a host for developing and running Web applications built in Java™ accommodating the latest business requirements. Businesses need to leverage, extend and integrate the strategic assets which represent multi-year investments to support leading edge technology. DB2 for z/OS® has come a long way and provides facilities to exploit the latest hardware and software technologies, accommodating a majority of user requirements. However, special considerations are required to build high performance applications. If you want to achieve high performance or high availability, you must use the design, programming, and operational techniques applicable to DB2. In this IBM Redbooks publication we discuss many of these techniques and provide guidelines for database and application design. We expect the best practices described in this book will help DB2 professionals design high-performance and high-availability applications. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: XML represents a fundamental change in computing. It allows applications to move away from proprietary file and data formats to a world of open data interchange. XML has become ubiquitous not only because of its range of applications, but also because of its ease of use. Although XML solves many problems by providing a standard format for data interchange, some challenges remain. In the real world, applications need reliable services to store, retrieve, and manipulate data. These services have traditionally been offered by DB2 for i5/OS. In this IBM Redbooks publication, we discuss the challenges of representing XML hierarchies in the relational database model. We provide an in-depth explanation of the three most popular approaches to bridge the hierarchy, the relational model dichotomy: Programmatically process the XML documents and map their hierarchy into a relational database. Use database middleware to handle the XML parsing and XML-to-relational database mapping. Use Extensible Stylesheet Language (XSL) Transformation to transform inbound XML documents directly to SQL scripts. We also share best practices and techniques aimed at streamlining the XML and DB2 for i5/OS integration. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication supersedes both: IBM TotalStorage: Introduction to SAN Routing, SG24-7119-00 Implementing the IBM TotalStorage Multiprotocol Routers, SG24-7246-00 The rapid spread and adoption of production storage area networks (SANs) has fuelled the need for multiprotocol routers. The routers provide improved scalability, security, and manageability by enabling devices in separate SAN fabrics to communicate without merging fabrics into a single, large SAN fabric. This capability enables clients to initially deploy separate SAN solutions at the departmental and data center levels. Then, clients can consolidate these separate solutions into large enterprise SAN solutions as their experience and requirements grow and change. Alternatively, multiprotocol routers can help to connect existing enterprise SANs for a variety of reasons. For instance, the introduction of Small Computer System Interface over IP (iSCSI) provides for the connection of low-end, low-cost hosts to enterprise SANs. The use of an Internet Protocol (IP) in the Fibre Channel (FC) environment provides for resource consolidation and disaster recovery planning over long distances. And the use of FC-FC routing services provides connectivity between two or more fabrics without having to merge them into a single SAN. This book targets storage network administrators, system designers, architects, and IT professionals who sell, design, or administer SANs. It introduces you to the products, concepts, and technology in the IBM System Storage SAN Routing portfolio. This book shows the features of each product and examples of how you can deploy and use them.

Kurzfassung: Successfully implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) requires applications and infrastructure that can support the SOA principles. Applications can be enabled by creating service interfaces to existing or new functions hosted by the applications. The service interfaces should be accessed using an infrastructure that can route and transport service requests to the correct service provider. As organizations expose more and more functions as services, it is vitally important that this infrastructure supports the management of SOA on an enterprise scale. This IBM Redbooks publication looks at how IBM messaging products support an SOA environment. In particular, it looks at WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, WebSphere MQ, and WebSphere Message Broker in an SOA environment. We discuss how they support SOA, compare the potential ESB product implementations, and show examples of building the infrastructure and creating mediations.

Kurzfassung: DB2 provides functions to guarantee integrity at the system level and at the application level. From the system point of view, DB2's integration with zSeries and disk storage architecture is the cornerstone for data integrity. Logging functionality and COPY and RECOVER utilities are the building blocks for bringing the table space back to a current or consistent status in case of hardware or software failures or when application events need to be rerun. From the application point of view, DB2 supports locking and commit at the transaction level, and general data integrity (at entity and semantic level), and a set of referential constraint rules for each parent/dependent table relationship. The tables linked by referential integrity are recognized during the execution of the QUIESCE utility. Other logical relations across tables, necessary to support business rules, are implemented via constraints, triggers, user defined functions, and user defined tables. Informational constraints also exist, they are not enforced by the database manager, they are used to improve query performance. In this IBM Redbooks publication, we briefly describe the integration of DB2 for z/OS with System z architecture, we then explore the data integrity options and utilize the standard recovery functions for application-related issues.

Kurzfassung: This IBM Redbooks publication discusses running Linux under z/VM on IBM System z9 and zSeries platforms. We describe enhancements available in z/VM Version 5.1. The intended audience for this book is IT administrators responsible for installing and configuring z/VM 5.1 systems running Linux guests. Using Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP), z/VM 5/1 can be installed on and operate from SCSI disks. Configured as emulated Fixed Block Architecture (FBA) disks, z/VM 5.1 can use FCP-attached disks for its system paging, spooling, directory, and minidisks. z/VM 5.1 adds new functions for Virtual Switches (VSWITCH). For increased network security, guests must have authorization before connecting to a VSWITCH. z/VM 5.1 introduces VSWITCH Layer 2 support. Operating at Layer 2, a VSWITCH delivers and receives network traffic in Ethernet frames. This provides the ability to handle non-IP protocols such as SNA, NetBIOS, and IPX. In addition, Layer 2 support reduces network latency and CPU overhead.

Kurzfassung: The requirements for a database management system (DBMS) have included support for very large and complex data objects. DB2 UDB for OS/390 Version 6 introduced the support for large objects (LOBs): they can contain text documents, images, or movies, and can be stored directly in the DBMS with sizes up to 2 gigabytes per object and 65,536 TB for a single LOB column in a 4,096 partition table. The introduction of these new data types has implied some changes in the administration processes and programming techniques. The book Large Objects with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, SG24-6571, introduced and described the usage of LOBs with DB2 for z/OS at Version 7 level. Major enhancements for LOB manipulation have been introduced with DB2 UDB for z/OS Version 8 and DB2 Version 9.1 for z/OS (DB2 9 in this book). These enhancements include performance functions such as the avoidance of LOB locks and DRDA LOB flow optimization, usability functions such as file reference variables, FETCH CONTINUE, and the automatic creation of objects. DB2 utilities provide integrated support with LOAD and UNLOAD, Cross Loader, REORG, CHECK DATA, and CHECK LOB. In this IBM Redbooks publication, we provide a totally revised description of the DB2 functions for LOB support as well as useful information about how to design and implement LOBs. We also offer examples of their use, programming considerations, and the enhanced processes used for their administration and maintenance. We also detail how SAP solutions use LOBs. This book replaces the previous book, Large Objects with DB2 for z/OS and OS/390, SG24-6571, for DB2 Version 8 and Version 9.1. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: Every organization has large amounts of data to store, use, and manage. For most, this quantity is increasing. However, over time, the value of this data changes. How can we map data to an appropriate storage media, so that it can be accessed in a timely manner when needed, retained for as long as required, and disposed of when no longer needed? Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) provides solutions. ILM is the process of managing information—from creation, through its useful life, to its eventual destruction—in a manner that aligns storage costs with the changing business value of information. We can think of ILM as an integrated solution of five IT management and infrastructure components working together: Service management (service levels), content management, workflow management (or process management), storage management, and storage infrastructure. This IBM Redbooks publication will help you understand what ILM is and why it is of value to you in your organization, and provide you with suggested ways to implement it using IBM products.

Kurzfassung: In this IBM Redbooks publication, we assume that you have a general familiarity with IBM eServer zSeries technology and terminology. We do not assume that you have an in-depth understanding of z/VM and Linux. This book is written for those who want to get a quick start with z/VM and Linux on the mainframe. This book describes how to set up your own Linux virtual servers on zSeries and IBM System z9 under z/VM. It adopts a cookbook format that provides a clearly documented set of procedures for installing and configuring z/VM in a logical partition (LPAR) and then installing and customizing Linux. You require a zSeries LPAR with associated resources, such as a z/VM 5.2 media, and a Linux distribution. This book is based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 for zSeries and it addresses both 31-bit and 64-bit distributions. In addition, there are a few associated REXX EXECs and Linux scripts to help speed up the process. These tools, which are on the Web, are not IBM products, but they are informally supported. They are available on the Web. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Kurzfassung: IBM WebSphere Process Server, and the accompanying IBM WebSphere Integration Developer development tool, provide a vast array of powerful features for building business process solutions. But how can you use those features for your organization? This IBM Redbooks publication takes a scenario-based approach to demonstrate these product features and employs the IBM Patterns for e-business to illustrate proven business process patterns. Part 1 of this book introduces the Patterns for e-business. The Patterns for e-business are a group of proven, reusable assets that can be used to increase the speed of developing and deploying On Demand Business applications. This book focuses on the Serial and Parallel Process patterns from the asset catalog. Part 2 describes the business scenario used in this book. It also explains the key technologies that are relevant to the scenarios. Part 3 guides you through the building of business process solutions in WebSphere Integration Developer for deployment to WebSphere Process Server. It includes the use of Web Services Business Process Execution Language (WS-BPEL) business processes, business state machines, and other product features. Four solutions are described, each adhering to a separate pattern. Each solution includes architectural considerations for designing the solution and step-by-step instructions for building the scenario. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.
