    Abstract: Malgré la parution ininterrompue de livres, d'articles et d'études sur Tahiti depuis sa découverte - pour la bibliographie qu'il prépare, le Père O'Reilly compte déjà plus de 10 000 fiches - les ouvrages dignes de foi qui nous donnent une description exacte et détaillée de l'ancienne société tahitienne sont très peu nombreux. Les récits de Banks, Cook et Commerson et les rapports des divers membres des trois expéditions espagnoles entre 1772 et 1776 nous fournissent bien sûr des renseignements souvent très précis sur les vêtements, les armes, les outils, les habitations et sur d'autres aspects limités de la culture matérielle des Tahitiens. Cependant les préjugés et l'optique européenne de ces trois chroniqueurs les rendaient souvent incapables, malgré leur bonne volonté, de bien comprendre les coutumes tahitiennes. Ce qui nous manque surtout ce sont des descriptions de leurs propres cultures et histoire faites, sans intermédiaire, par des savants et historiens tahitiens, sur le modèle, par exemple, des Hawaiian Antiquities de Malo. Même les petits atolls des Tuamotu ont été mieux servis puisqu'il existe parmi les nombreux documents recueillis par les ethnologues du Bishop Muséum dans cet archipel, entre 1929 et 1934, au moins une douzaine de manuscrits de ce genre. Il se peut qu'à Tahiti aussi des individus aux ambitions littéraires aient entrepris la même tâche, après avoir appris à écrire au début du siècle dernier. Mais, quoi qu'il en soit, il n'a été préservé jusqu'à nos jours qu'une seule oeuvre d'un auteur tahitien, à savoir les Mémoires d'Arii Taimai, présentée ici ; encore n'a-t-elle malheureusement pas tout à fait la même authenticité et originalité que les écrits comparables des autres archipels polynésiens. Ceci n'empêche pas ces Mémoires - qui contiennent principalement des légendes, des chants et des généalogies des tribus des Teva - d'être, pour tous ceux qui s'intéressent à l'histoire et à l'ethnologie tahitiennes, une source d'une valeur inestimable

Francis Adrian Van der Kemp was a writer, minister, and political leader of some prominence in his native Holland when he fled from religious and political persecution in 1788 to settle in Oneida County in upstate New York. He became one of the area's important citizens during its formative period. His active, inquiring mind ranged far beyond his rural village of Oldenbarneveld. Politics, religion, history, government, scientific agriculture geology, the Erie Canal, the conduct of the War of 1812, and any threat to political or religious freedom stimulated him to research and writing. Van der Kemp's views were sought and respected not only by his friends and neighbors, but by state and national leaders as well. His warm friendship with John and Abigail Adams endured till their deaths, and John Quincy Adams continued the friendship. This is an absorbing biography of an active and influential citizen and resident of central New York State

    Abstract: "God is dead," proclaimed Nietzsche; meaning that neither nature nor the supernatural can provide any solid ground on which to base rules or standards of human conduct. To this dictum, which is consciously or unconsciously accepted by many people today, the author of this book takes strong exception. There are, he believes, rational grounds for ethical standards, for an "art of living" the good life; and he defends this thesis with arguments derived from the great Greek philosophers but focused on problems of modern living. Writing in non-technical language, the author acknowledges his debt to Aristotle (and also Socrates and Plato), but his purpose is not merely to restate Aristotle's ideas but "to use him in a modern effort to set forth and justify a rational system of ethics." Mr. Veatch makes short shrift of modern philosophical writers who merely analyze the language of ethics but disclaim any concern with its content, and he vigorously refutes objections to his position made by relativists, behaviorists and utilitarians. Existentialists, on the other hand, he finds closer to the search for a rational ethic than is commonly supposed. While his discussion centers on ethics, he acknowledges the important role of religion in human conduct. Thoughtful readers and students will welcome this attractive and intelligible presentation of the case foe a realistic ethics in modern life

In Freedom's Cause is a tribute and a memorial to these men. For this roll of honor, the compilers have tried to secure biographical data and photographs of all men of Hawaii who died in military service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, when President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the termination of hostilities. Collection of these records started almost as soon as the Hawaii War Records Depository was established at the University of Hawaii in the spring of 1943. The Depository, set up as a result of cooperative action on the part of members of the faculty of the University, territorial legislators, and other public leaders, was authorized to collect and preserve all available historical records pertaining to Hawaii's participation in World War II. One of its first projects was to assemble a file of biographical data on men who had died in military service, which would become one of many sources from which information for this volume was gathered

    Abstract: Richard Dale Owen was born in 1810 in Scotland to a wealthy textile manufacturer and philanthropist. The youngest of eight children, Richard grew up at the family estate of Braxfield House, where he received his early education from private tutors. He would later go on to study chemistry, physics, and natural sciences, among other subjects, traveling between Scotland and Switzerland for his schooling.Owen arrived in the United States in 1828 to teach in New Haven, Indiana, where his father was running an experimental utopian community of happiness, enlightenment, and prosperity. He would later go on to be Indiana’s second state geologist before enlisting in the army during both the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. Colonel Owen took command of 4,000 Confederate prisoners at Camp Morton in Indianapolis, where he established new daily routines and rules for supervision of the prisoners. Under Owen’s command, prisoners were allowed to read books and form glee clubs, theatrical groups, and sports teams. He also created a camp bakery staffed by prisoners that proved to be a substantial cost savings, allowing for above-average rations for the prisoners under his watch.After his military service came to an end, Owen continued to serve as a state geologist as well as becoming a professor at Indiana University, teaching chemistry, language, and natural philosophy. After failing to help secure IU as Indiana’s land-grant school, Owen was recruited to help establish Purdue University, west of Lafayette. The board of trustees selected him to serve as the University’s first president on August 13, 1872. However, Owen and the trustees disagreed on many early initiatives, including his focus on agriculture and push for more comfortable living arrangements for students.After less than two years serving as president, where he never drew a salary, Owen resigned his position and returned to teaching at Indiana University, until hearing problems caused him to retire in 1879. He spent his remaining years in New Harmony, where he conducted research and published several scientific papers until his tragic death caused by an accidental poisoning at the hand of a local pharmacist

Aussi loin que l'on puisse remonter dans l'histoire de la civilisation grecque, on retrouve l'amour de la compétition, et une cité ne connaissait pas plus grande gloire que de voir un de ses enfants vainqueur aux jeux panhelléniques. La passion des procès et de la plaidoirie n'est qu'un autre aspect de la même tendance : il y a dans toute affaire une cause à gagner, un adversaire à écraser. Le même tour d'esprit se retrouve dans le domaine intellectuel : une idée ne vaut que dans la mesure où elle prévaut sur l'idée adverse, un point de vue n'est satisfaisant que s'il l'emporte, après mûre délibération, sur le point de vue opposé. Aussi le penseur, l'historien, le poète comique, dans la mesure même où ils ne prennent pas eux-mêmes parti, sont-ils amenés à tout concevoir et à tout représenter sous la forme contradictoire. A cet art du pour et du contre, les sophistes ont donné ses règles d'expression. Dans ce domaine, l'historien de la tragédie est amené à faire des constatations et à se poser un problème. Les constatations qui, au premier abord semblent s'imposer de façon massive, sont en réalité d'une nature assez délicate. Il est certain que l'ἀγών est très richement représenté dans la tragédie : il suffit de feuilleter un exemplaire de Sophocle ou d'Euripide pour craindre d'être écrasé sous l'abondance de la matière. Mais dès que l'on essaye, très simplement, de déterminer quelles tragédies possèdent des scènes d'ἀγών et lesquelles n'en possèdent pas, les difficultés commencent. On s'aperçoit alors que la notion technique d'ἀγών est très fuyante, que les variétés sont nombreuses, les règles complexes, et l'on se trouve souvent en présence de scènes dont on se demande si elles méritent ou non le nom d'ἀγών. A cette question on ne peut, à vrai dire, répondre que quand on a étudié de près la structure de l'ἀγών et établi, sinon des lois, au moins des constatations suffisamment précises et générales

    Abstract: El examén al estudio de Toynbee, desde el punto de vista de la teoría social sistemática, se propone señalar qué aspectos de su oba son válidos a la luz de dicha teoría y por qué direcciones trascienden de ella. Como parte de esta crítica y evaluación se agrupara junto a Toynbee la labor de otros cultivadores modernos de la ciencia social, especialmete los trabajos de Max Webber y el sistema de sociología Wiese-Becker, según aparece expuesto en la sociología sistemática, en una tentativa de llevar una cuenta aproximada de créditos y débitos por partida triple. Por este medio se espera lograr una apresiación esacta de la aportación de Toynbee a la teoría social
