Abstract: A case control study has been conducted in Tegulet and Bulga Awraja/district, Northern Shoa Administrative Region. The purpose of the study was to assess the various characteristics influencing modern contraception usage among users as compared to never-users and dropouts from family planning clinics . A total of 848 women ages 15 - 49 were interviewed. Among these, 41.4% were users while 42.1% and 16.5% were never-users and dropouts, respectively. In addition, husbands of 150 users, 115 never users and 49 dropouts were interviewed. EKaminat ~ on of the various socio-demographic and reproductive characteristics showed significant differences in most of the variables between users and never-users. compared to never-users, users were older (mean age 27.1 years versus 25.9 years), more likely to be married (56% versus 47 %) or divorced (31% versus 25%), have a higher mean educational level (grade 5.3 versus 4.8), are more likely to work outside the horne for cash payment (43% versus 28%), belong to the high income class (30% versus 17%) and have more ch il dren (2 live-children or more) (72% versus 45%). vii The vast ma j ority of users ( 95%) scored 3 and above in modern contraception knowledge whereas only 51% of the never-users scored so high. Ni nety percent of the users' husbands scored 3 and above on modern contraceptive knowledge while only 71% of never-us ers' scored this high. A higher approval of modern contraception and sex education to school children was seen among users' husbands (99% and 88%, respectively) as compared to never-users (77% and 74%, respectively). Husband-wife communication on family planning was significantly higher among users (41%) than never-users (15%). Of the variables tested between users and dropouts very few significant differences were demonstrated. Current users had used modern contraception for a mean period of 23.5 months while dropouts had used it for a mean period of 17.9 months. A higher proportion of dropouts were found to be dissatisfied with the method refil l interval compared to users (1 9% versus 10%) . viii J Multiple regression showed that of the variables measured, the number of pregnancies a woman had had, modern contraception knowledge and age, were the main predictors of usage of modern contraception (R2 = .13). Desire t o have more children (40%), having no husband/sexual partner (19%) and fear of adverse effects of modern contraceptives (15%) were given as the major reasons for nonuse of modern contraceptives by the never-users. Dropouts cited the desire to have additional children ( 27% ), becoming pregnant (21%), fear of adverse effects of modern contraceptives (21%), no method refill (12%) and husband opposition (7%) as the major reasons for discontinuatlon of modern contraception. Recommendations have been given based on the outcome of the study.

Abstract: In 1985-86, rescue excavations around the gallo-roman baths city of Aquae Bormonis brought to the surface exceptional ceramic material: hundreds of figurines, archetypes and casts, mostly original, prove the existence of a large workshop still to be precisely localized. This book is a synthetic study of these finds as well as of the structures and other types of material such as: common and glazed ceramic, terra sigillata, lamps (probably manufactured on the site); amphorae, coins, metallic and faunal material. Through the new chronological, typological and trading data exposed this volume is essential for people studying ceramic and any archaeologist working on the gallo-roman period

Abstract: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the "grange du Mont" was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the "grange", as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy

Abstract: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful interpretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolution. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne department. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been virtually non-existent

Abstract: Hindouisme, bouddhisme, chamanisme coexistent en Himalaya.

Abstract: Born in the Wallingford Clinic in 1949, Barry Buxton called the town of Blowing Rock home during his childhood. The youngest of seven children, he grew up in the mountains attending Blowing Rock elementary school and looked towards the nearby college, Appalachian State University, for his undergraduate studies. Graduate school took Dr. Buxton to the midwest, however he returned to Blowing Rock in the 1980s to assume a position at the Appalachian Consortium Press. It was during this time he was approached by Judith Burns to write a complete history of Blowing Rock. Published in 1989, A Village Tapestry is the result of a three year intensive study completed by Dr. Buxton. This book is the history of a small town in the mountains; however, for Dr. Buxton it is also an extension of his story in the village in which he was born

Abstract: The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia document the colony through its first twenty-five years and includes correspondence between Georgia founder James Oglethorpe and the Trustees for Establishing the Colony, as well as records pertaining to land grants; agreements and interactions with Indigenous peoples; the settlement of a small Jewish community and the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees; and the removal on restrictions of land tenure, rum, and slavery in the colony. Most of the local records of colonial Georgia were destroyed during the Revolution. Under Governor James Wright's direction, merchant John Graham loaded much of the official records on his vessel in the Savannah River. During the Battle of the Rice Boats in March 1776, the Inverness was burned while it lay at anchor. The destructive civil war that occurred in the latter phases of the Revolution resulted in further destruction. The Colonial Records of the State of Georgia, drawn from archival material in Great Britain, remain a unique source. Volume 20 concerns the actual founding of Georgia and covers the years 1732-35. It provides background on the settlement and a great deal about the arrival of the colonists and the conditions that they found. Volume 27, spanning the years 1754-56, contains the papers of Georgia's first governor, John Reynolds, as well as the correspondence of various inhabitants. Volume 28, Part I, contains the papers of governors John Reynolds, Henry Ellis, and James Wright from 1757 to 1763. Volume 28, Part II includes the papers of Governor James Wright, acting governor James Habersham, and others. Volume 29 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1732-1738. Volume 30 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1738-1745 Volume 31 contains the Trustees' Letter Book, 1745-1752 Volume 32 includes entry books of commissions, powers, instructions, leases, grants of land, and other documents by the Trustees

Richard Meyer has gathered twelve original essays examining burial grounds through the centuries and across the land to give a broad understanding of the history and cultural values of communities, regions, and American society at large

Abstract: Development in Polynesian Ethnology assesses the current state of anthropological research in Polynesia by examining the debates and issues that shape the discipline today. What have anthropologists achieved? What concerns now dominate discussion? Where is Polynesian anthropology headed? In a series of provocative and original essays, leading scholars examine prehistory, social organization, socialization and character development, mana and tapu, chieftainship, art and aesthetics, and early contact. Together these essays show how history, anthropology, and archaeology have combined to give a broad understanding of Polynesian societies developing over time--how they represent a blend of modernity and tradition, continuity and change. This book is both an introduction to Polynesia for interested students and a thought-provoking synthesis for scholars charting new directions and posing possibilities for future research. Scholars outside Polynesian studies will find the perspectives it offers important and its comprehensive bibliography an invaluable resource

Abstract: In the era after Suffrage, white middle-class housewives abandoned moves toward paid work for themselves, embraced domestic life, and felt entitled to servants. In Domesticity and Dirt, Phyllis Palmer examines the cultural norms that led such women to take on the ornamental and emotional elements of the job while relegating the hard physical work and demeaning service tasks to servants—mainly women of color. Using novels, films, magazine articles, home economics texts, and government-funded domestic training course manuals, the author details cultural expectations about middle-class homelife. Palmer describes how government-funded education programs encouraged the divisions of labor and identity and undercut domestic workers’ organized efforts during the 1930s to win inclusion in New Deal programs regulating labor conditions. Aided by less powerful black civil rights groups, without the assistance of trade unions or women’s clubs, domestics failed to win legal protections and the legal authority and self-respect these brought to covered workers. The author also reveals how middle- class women responded ambivalently to the call to aid women workers when labor reforms threatened their domestic arrangements. Throughout her study, Palmer questions why white middle-class women looked to new technology and domestic help to deal with cultural demands upon "the perfect housewife" rather than expecting their husbands to help. When the supply of servants declined during the 1950s, middle-class housewives were left isolated with lots of housework. Although they rapidly followed their servants into paid work outside the home, they remain responsible for housework and child care

Abstract: Few subjects have been so cursorily treated as the first Japanese unions. Yet their history contains much to intrigue the student of human events: The American Federation of Labor organizer who founded the Japanese labor movement; the Japanese Activists who spent years in AMerica studying unionism a major railway strike that won the hearts of the people of Japan; a major Japanese union newspaper with most of its copy in Japanese but always a few pages in English. These and other puzzling events can be understood only in the context of the development of Japan's labor movement between 1868 and 1900. Stephen E. Marsland effectively brings together primary and secondary sources to demonstrate how social, political, economic, technological, and historical factors shaped the philosophical outlook and the organizational structure of the labor movement in Japan. He shows that Japanese workers and their leaders tended to choose the "shop" form of unionism rather than the prevalent forms in the industrialized Western nations. The shop from, the author contends, was the structural forerunner of the present-day "enterprise" unions that multiplied so typically in post World War II Japan. THe marriage of Western economic centres with Japanese social structure and philosophy forged a uniquely Japanese unionism that has remained strong and vibrant to this day, sustained by the traditions created by the early Japanese labor movements and its leaders. The Birth of the Japanese Labor Movement will be of interest to Japanese studies specialists, particularly in history and the social sciences, and scholars in the fields of industrial relations and labor history

Abstract: The author's work constitutes the first synthesis, since Father Glory's work published in 1948, about an unknown aspect of Prehistoric art : postglacial symbolic paintings. This is an inventory ot the Provence painted sites made after systematic surveys which led to rectify interpretation and location mistakes and to put the sites in their archaeological context. This is also an approach to the delicate questions of datation, typology and interpretation. This work appears as a critical study and a documentary corpus necessary to keep in memory these Neolithic art witnesses which disappear more and more every year because of natural agents and vandalism

Abstract: When Jean Genet, the enfant terrible of the French theater, died on April 15, 1986, he left a rich and controversial literary legacy. Genet, a homosexual and ex-convict, wrote about events and in a language that could ruffle the complacency of the most sophisticated reader. His work can be seen as a struggle of the social outcast to be heard from beyond the borders of the dominant, heterosexual culture. This challenging book tracks the effects of this struggle in Genet's novels, plays, film, and political essays by means of a general semiotics of performance. By staging a dialogue between Genet and writers such as Derrida, Bakhtin, Metz, Ricoeur, and Benveniste, Laura Oswald pursues the question of performance in the form of a debate rather than that of a closed theoretical system. Her approach puts into play relations between semiotics and philosophy and provides a means of understanding the relationship between Genet's poetics and his radical politics. By focusing on the role of the double in Genet's literary imagination and by reading Genet with his "others" in the realm of theory, Oswald comes to grips with the overriding concerns of a man whose life in literature was never very far from his life as prisoner, as outcast, as self-proclaimed exile

Abstract: For about ten years numerous studies have been carried out in France about roman lamps. This one, for the first time and for a masters' degree research, is oriented toward the systematic study of productions from several potters' workshops in Montans (Tarn), ail from welldated archaeological context. More than a simple descriptive inventory, the author gives us a chronology of the Ist and IInd centuries. Her analysis of three associated criteria (decoration/type/sig nature, mark), based upon the study of 900 pieces, reveals some original aspects of the potters' practice and leads to interesting interpretations about the technique used most of the time in Montans which consists in making moulds from lamps already in use

Abstract: Winner of the Association of American Publishers's Excellence in Professional and Scholarly Publishing, Architecture and Urban Planning AwardThe Making of an Inventor, volume 1 of the monumental The Papers of Thomas A. Edison, takes us through Edison's life from early childhood to age twenty-six, when his work in telegraphy laid the groundwork for some of his best-known inventions. An 1868 telegraph design by the twenty-one-year-old Edison, for instance, reveals the now-familiar drum and stylus that reappeared in the phonograph of 1877 and in his earliest motion picture design. The Making of an Inventor contains 90 percent of all known documents relating to Edison's boyhood and early career, including every entry from his Newark lab notebooks. Illustrated with nearly 600 of the inventor's own drawings and sketches, it provides a comprehensive account of the origins of Edison's creative genius. Praise for previous volumes of The Papers of Thomas A. Edison:"Those interested in America's technological culture can eagerly look forward to the appearance of each volume of the Edison Papers."-Technology and Culture"The essence of the volume is Edison's technical notebooks, a window onto the inventor's workshop. Abstract: In this innovative study, Marietta Morrissey reframes the debate over slavery in the New World by focusing on the experiences of slave women. Rich in detail and rigorously comparative, her work illuminates the exploitation, achievements, and resilience of slave women in the British, Dutch, French, Spanish, and Danish colonies in the Caribbean from 1600 through the mid 1800s.Morrissey examines a wide spectrum of experience among Caribbean slave women, including their work at home, in the fields, and as domestics; their roles as wives and mothers; their health, sexuality, and fertility; and their decline in status with the advent of industrialization and the abolition of slavery.Life for these women, Morrissey shows, was much more hazardous, brutal, and fragmented than it was for their counterparts in the American South. These women were in a constant, dynamic struggle with men-both masters and fellow slaves-over the foundations of their social experience. This experience was defined both by their status as slaves and by gender inequality. On the one hand, their slave status gradually robbed them of their domain-the household economy-and created a kind of perverse equality in which slave women-like slave men-became "units of agricultural labor." One the other hand, slave women were denied the access that slave men eventually gained to skilled agricultural work. The result of this gender inequality, as Morrissey convincingly demonstrates, was a further erosion of the status and authority of slave women within their own culture.Morrissey's study, which addresses significant issues in women's history and black history, will go far toward reshaping our perceptions of slave life in the new world

Abstract: In Writing Joyce, Lorraine Weir proposes a paradigm shift in Joyce studies away from the preoccupation with referential mimesis and toward a theory of processual mimesis and a materialist semiotics. Rather than emphasize plot, character, and psychology, Weir approaches A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake as a system, a memory theater whose mnemonic repertoires readers comprehend according to directives coded in the text. "In Writing Joyce," says Weir, "we encounter the system as a teaching machine, whose purpose is to teach us itself." To write the system is both to invent and to perform it," she writes, " 'invent' in the medieval rhetorical sense of invention, to come upon or discover what is already given and, working with the text, to 'draw out' or foreground its modes of operation. In the process of acquiring competence in the working of the system, to write Joyce is to be written by the system which is 'Joyce.' " Weir's book reconsiders such familiar topoi in Joyce studies as epiphany, catechism, pun/catachresis, and Joycean "music" from within a semiotics of the system as performative discourse. Rejecting postmodernism's construction of high modernism, Writing Joyce seeks an expanded understanding of modernity that reaches back to Gothic pedagogy and to Vico's new science, to a grammatology grounded in a semiotics of the perceived environment as a knowable world. Through the discussion of texts ranging from Ignatius Loyola to Roland Barthes and from Giambattista Vico to Louis Zukofsky, Writing Joyce seeks to formulate the Joyce system in its own terms while expanding the boundaries of literary semiotics

Abstract: The publication of excavations at Castellu throws an entirely new light upon late-Roman and early-medieval Corsica. The study includes an examination of the finds, most of which are of 6th century date, and an analysis of the faunal remains. The latter shows not only that domesticated species differed from those of the Iron-Age but also that eating habits had changed. The resulting picture is one of significant and long-lasting Romanisation of innerCorsica, and of ongoing trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean region, even after the Vandal invasion. The publication marks a major step towards a new understanding of this period of Corsican history

Abstract: Hailed by the New York Times as "one of the best soldiers this country has produced," Frank Ross McCoy was, throughout his distinguished career, much more than just a good soldier. As friend and confidant to such leaders as Theodore Roosevelt, Leonard Wood, and Henry Stimson, he disproves the standard view of the military before 1940 as having no role in American foreign policy. Instead, as A. J. Bacevich ably demonstrates, McCoy was intimately involved in the development of U.S. foreign relations from McKinley's administration to Truman's.McCoy began his military career with Leonard Wood in Cuba during the SpanishAmerican War. After the war, he and Wood (who became military governor) worked together to establish democratic reforms in Cuba. There followed for McCoy a succession of difficult and sometimes dangerous assignments: The Philippines (during the Moro uprising), Mexico, France (as combat commander during World War I), Turkey and Armenia, the Philippines again, Nicaragua (during the Sandino's guerrilla campaign), Bolivia and Paraguay, and China (with the Lytton Commission investigating Japan's invasion of Manchuria). Following a series of stateside appointments, McCoy served finally as chairman of the Far Eastern Commission, an international body created to determine the fate of postwar Japan.Based on exhaustive research in McCoy's personal papers and official records, Bacevich shows that McCoy's career provides a unique perspective both on American foreign policy and on civilmilitary relations

Abstract: The life of Mary Heaton Vorse (1874-1966) reads like a chronology of American radicalism in the first half of the twentieth century. The foremost pioneer of labor journalism in the U.S. and a prominent participant in the women's universal suffrage movement, Vorse spent her life actively struggling for libertarian socialism, feminism, and world peace. Her friends and colleagues were among the most famous writers, artists, and intellectuals of the time. Her sizeable FBI file was maintained until she was eighty-two years old. This compelling biography restores an important heroine to her place in American and feminist history

Abstract: In this book, cultural historian Richard Morse takes a series of sharply focused looks at the Americas. He inquires into the ways in which speech and poetry evoke the common historical experience of North and South America and examines the transatlantic "sea changes" of European languages. He uses political ideology to contrast the traditions of Anglo and Latin America, while surveying contemporary pressures for ideological change. In the book's final sections, he addresses the North-South transaction from yet three more angles, ruminating on the problems involved in conveying the Latin American experience to U.S. students, considering the impediments to U.S.-Puerto Rican understanding, and recounting the mythic adventures of McLuhanaima, "the world's first Brazilianist," as he travels through the exotic land he has chosen for definitive research

Abstract: With the founding of the New York Herald in 1835, James Gordon Bennett began what was to become the most successful and widely circulated newspaper of mid-nineteenth-century America. He did not invent the cheap popular newspaper, but his innovations, a combination of sensationalism, technological improvements, and comprehensive news coverage, made the Herald the prototype of modern journalism and the best newspaper of its time. Subsequent yellow journalists like Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearts merely carried Bennett's techniques to new heights-or depths. Bennett championed the masses and created a newspaper for them. Priced cheap enough for most New Yorkers to afford, the Herald served up information that was useful, educational, and entertaining. Articles covered the whole range of human activity-sex, crime, tragedy, medicine, religion, culture. This book is not a biography of Bennett but rather an account of him as editor and publisher. His editorials were notorious for their rhetorical extremism, and his public identity was based on negatives-Anglophobia, anti-Catholicism, and anti-abolitionism in particular. He misled his unsophisticated readers with simplistic explanations of events and forces that affected their lives. He claimed to be politically independent, above party, but he was constantly enmeshed in the party battles of the period. His contemporaries envied his success bit detested the means by which he achieved it; they respected his power but hated him personally. Former accounts of Bennett have been anecdotal and superficial. James. L. Crouthamel has based his research primarily on a day-by-day reading of over three decades of the Herald and thus provides useful facts and assessments of a major period in the history of journalism

Abstract: The Lost Chord is a pioneering effort to establish the place of music in the life and literature of Victorian Britain and to establish its value as art. In an introductory essay, Nicholas Temperley gives a detailed assessment of the current state of research in this field and examines the reasons for the relative obscurity of most Victorian music, which he traces to the Victorians' own belief that great music must come from across the Channel. The intrinsic value of Victorian music is the main message of Peter Horton's essay on Samuel Sebastian Wesley and Linda K. Hughes's critical study of Arthur Somervall's song cycle on Tennyson's Maud; but both also examine the proper function of music, a subject that greatly concerned many Victorian writers and thinkers. Among them was John Ruskin, whose ideas and musical compositions are explored by William J. Gatens. The function of music in education is the subject of Bernarr Rainbow's essay, while Mary Burgan surveys the treatment of music as an occupation for women in nineteenth-century fiction. Robert Bledsoe investigates the reception of a great Italian composer, Giuseppe Verdi, by Victorian critics and audiences. Since, as Temperley points out, serious Victorian music is difficult for the general reader to locate, the book is accompanied by a special cassette recording of music to illustrate some of the essays

Abstract: Que serait-ce qu'une langue-sœur ?

Abstract: Not since the culturally and politically exciting period of the sixties has there been such an outpouring of stylistically varied and sociopolitically significant films from the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. In recent years, films from these countries have captured numerous awards at prestigious international film festivals and have been the subject of major retrospectives at important cultural centers in the United States and Western Europe. Post new wave developments have been variously hailed as a second new wave, as the new model in the Soviet Union, the new Yugoslav film in Yugoslavia, the cinema of moral concern in Poland, and the new Hungarian cinema in Hungary. This book is the first to systematically survey and analyze recent cinematic developments in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and to do so within the context of contemporary sociocultural and political developments. Each national cinema is discussed and analyzed by a noted authority, with chapters devoted to the Soviet Union (Anna Lawton), East Germany (Sigrun D. Leonhard), Czechoslovakia (Peter Hames), Poland (Frank Turaj), Hungary (David Paul), Bulgaria (Ronald Holloway), and Yugoslavia (Daniel J. Goulding)

Abstract: After its eclipse by the piano, the harpsichord survived primarily as a museum curiosity until the end of the nineteenth century. But early in the new century the player and builder Arnold Dolmetsch found a ready market for his harpsichords, clavichords, and virginals and an eager audience for his chamber concerts featuring these new/old instruments. In 1923 the incomparable Wanda Landowska made her American debut. This tiny woman, almost a cult figure, was to exert a powerful influence on the course of harpsichord playing for the next half century. Among her students were Putnam Aldrich, the harpsichord duo of Philip Manuel and Gavin Williamson, Alice Ehlers, and, for a short time, Ralph Kirkpatrick. Landowska's instrument was the heavy, durable Pleyel. As the harpsichord and authentic instrument revival progressed, American builders started to produce lighter instruments, and in recent years do-it-yourself builders have been buying harpsichord kits. Sylvia Marlowe is famous for playing jazz on the harpsichord, and in a reversal of past practice, harpsichordists are now borrowing the music of the piano and making it their own. The harpsichord has come a long way from the days when reviewers patronizingly described it as "quaint," "tinkling," or sounding like "a regiment of mice." It can be powerful and tender, dramatic and delicate, and in the minds of many, the only medium for the performance of early music

Abstract: Elaborating a theory of consciousness that Kant made only partially explicit in the Transcendental Deduction of the Critique of Pure Reason, Richard E. Aquila offers a novel reading of Kant's theories of synthesis and conceptual rules, productive and reproductive imagination, the distinction between judgments of perception and experience, and the relations between self and objects. Aquila builds on the Transcendental Aesthetic's view of the formation of intuitional consciousness out of sensory matter and proposes a theory of concept formation, in the Transcendental Deduction, out of analogously conceived bodies of imaginative matter. Kant is seen here as offering a formidable synthesis of the purely animal and the distinctively human in human consciousness

Abstract: From the Spanish mission days of the seventeenth century to the present, the organ mirrors to a remarkable degree its social, economic, and cultural setting. It has unique characteristics that bind it more closely than any other instrument to its location, to social and economic changes, and to fluctuations in musical taste. Immigration, wars, industrial growth, the availability of electricity, the popularity of orchestral music, and the invention of the phonograph and of the player piano all had a part in determining the course of American organ history. Orpha Ochse provides descriptions and specifications of instruments representative of the various periods of organ building: from the small tracker-action organs built by the colonists to the electropneumatic monsters of the early twentieth century to today's repertoire-oriented instruments. She shows how the design is affected by the intended use of the organ-in a church, a home, or a concert hall-and by the music written for it. This comprehensive account of the development of the organ in the United States will be valuable not only to players and builders but also to students of Americana

Abstract: Distant Companions tells the fascinating story of the lives and times of domestic servants and their employers in Zambia from the beginning of white settlement during the colonial period until after independence. Emphasizing the interactive nature of relationships of domination, the book is useful for readers who seek to understand the dynamics of domestic service in a variety of settings. In order to examine the servant- employer relationship within the context of larger political and economic processes, Karen Tranberg Hansen employs an unusual combination of methods, including analysis of historical documents, travelogues, memoirs, literature, and life histories, as well as anthropological fieldwork, survey research, and participant observation

Abstract: Indonesia's great size and diversity and its history of regional dissension have made its struggle for national integration particularly complex. Christine Drake presents an informed and balanced picture of past and present developments in this struggle, offering readers a realistic assessment of the current status and future prospects of national integration in Indonesia. By addressing historical, political, social, and economic issues in conjunction with statistical analysis, Professor Drake argues that the spatial pattern of integration is far more complex than the commonly accepted core-periphery model of Indonesian integration and development. The author examines the effectiveness of Indonesian government policies in promoting national integration and concludes that in general they have led to greater national unity, although many serious problems remain

Abstract: Building on earlier work in the anthropology of law and taking a critical stance toward it, June Starr and Jane F. Collier ask, "Should social anthropologists continue to isolate the ‘legal’ as a separate field of study?" To answer this question, they confront critics of legal anthropology who suggest that the subfield is dying and advocate a reintegration of legal anthropology into a renewed general anthropology. Chapters by anthropologists, sociologists, and law professors, using anthropological rather than legal methodologies, provide original analyses of particular legal developments. Some contributors adopt an interpretative approach, focusing on law as a system of meaning; others adopt a materialistic approach, analyzing the economic and political forces that historically shaped relations between social groups. Contributors include Said Armir Arjomand, Anton Blok, Bernard Cohn, George Collier, Carol Greenhouse, Sally Falk Moore, Laura Nader, June Nash, Lawrence Rosen, June Starr, and Joan Vincent

Abstract: Taking issue with a widely held view that Nietzsche's writings are essentially fragmentary or aphoristic, Gary Shapiro focuses on the narrative mode that Nietzsche adopted in many of his works. Shapiro proposes a reading of Nietzsche that recognizes his rigorous critique of the metanarratives of traditional philosophy and religion but that also takes seriously the philosopher's claim to be a master of many styles. By articulating the stories and the critique of story-telling to be found in Nietzsche's writings, Nietzschean Narratives explores the radically plural and yet inevitable nature of the narrative function. Shapiro offers extended readings of three emblematic but contrasting narrative works-Thus Spoke Zarathustra, The Antichrist, and Ecce Homo. His approach is informed by the tension between the critical and the poetic sides of Nietzsche's narrative thought and practice and by the issues raised in recent literary and philosophical discussions of Nietzsche's writing. Such Nietzschean themes as eternal recurrence, the question of origins, and the problematics of self-knowledge are reinterpreted in the context of the narratives in which Nietzsche develops or employs them

Abstract: In Toward a Liberalism, Richard Flathman shows why and how political theory can contribute to the quality of moral and political practice without violating, as empiricist- and idealist-based theories tend to do, liberal commitments to individuality and plurality. Exploring the tense but inevitable relationship between liberalism and authority, he advances a theory of democratic citizenship tempered by appreciation of the ways in which citizenship is implicated with and augments authority. Flathman examines the relationship of individual rights to freedom on one hand and to authority and power on the other, rejecting the quest for a single homogenous and authoritative liberal theory

Abstract: The abundance of megaliths on the cost of Brittany has hidden for a long time the existence of megaliths inside the peninsula This work summarizes four years on the field (1982-1985) and brings new informations about this type of architecture, ignored until now, through three monuments from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Laboratory studies add to classical field data informations allowing to replace the megaliths in their environment and to demonstrate the existence of an economic system based upon exchange, ending the myth of autarky inside "the large forest". This work also analyses modem acculturations of these monuments settled in an area where celtic and arthurian legend is still very much alive

Abstract: The study of the burials and cemeteries of the Roman world still suffers from an almost complete lack of regional surveys which, alone, would allow archaeologists to develop wide-ranging synthèses and a better approach of relationships between the world of the living and that of the dead. In the following work, written as a Ph. D. thesis, the author, basing his argumentation on a detailed analysis of the Roman graves discovered in the Armorican peninsula, has attempted to explore their nature and structure, and to show how, in their variety, they closely relate to the cultural diversity of the western Gaulish Civitates

Abstract: This two part film focusses on Mongols living in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. Both sections would be excellent as teaching aids, particularly when accompanied by appropriate literature. The cinematography is stunning, evoking a strong mixture of the power of the environment-the expanse of the desert and grasslands-and the will of the people who live there. The Grasslands follows the life of a nomadic Mongol family on their year's journey following their herds across northern China. This section portrays a traditional view of Mongolian life. The second part of the film, The Desert, gives a more contemporary view of Mongols attempting to reclaim the desert in the more sedentary lifestyle currently encouraged by the Chinese government. This second section brings in disturbing environmental questions regarding the destruction of these northern grasslands.

Abstract: In this innovative study, Stephen Nimis applies the insights of semiotics to the analysis of the epic simile in works by Homer, Apollonius of Rhodes, Vergil, Dante, and Milton. Through close structural readings of the similes in these works, Nimis explores the ways texts relate to their narrative traditions and shows how changing cultural contexts produce different ways of conceiving and constructing meaning. He traces these transformations in the epic from the integrated warrior culture of the Iliad to the dissolution of the epic tradition in the cultural world of Milton's Paradise Lost

Abstract: Stéphanie Thiébault is a Research Fellow with the CNRS. In this work, based upon her doctoral thesis, the author considers the relationship between Man and the plant world during the Holocene period and examines this era of significant cultural change along a south-north axis from the Mediterranean to the Savoy. This comprehensive study is the first of its kind to be carried out in the area for this period: over 10,000 charcoal samples, taken from six highly-stratified deposits in the south-western Pre-Alps are analysed and the wood species identified. As a result, this book is also an excellent introduction to the methods of anthracology (the identifying of wood species from charcoal remains). The author assesses the method's potential for ecological reconstructions of ancient landscapes and climates, as well as its implications for palaeethnology. Conceived as the first stage of a larger project, this study lays the ground-work for future discussion of palaeobotany in the regions examined

Abstract: In the Oraibi split of 1906, "traditional" Hopis separated themselves from "progressives" and established the new settlement of Hotevilla in what has been accepted as a response to changing tribal politics. Following the split, some returned to Oraibi but eventually left to establish another new settlement at Bacavi. Drawing on oral accounts from Hopi consultants and on contemporary documents, Peter M. Whiteley argues that the split was in fact the result of a conspiracy among Hopi politico-religious leaders from both the "hostile" and "friendly" factions, a revolution to overturn the allegedly corrupt Oraibi religious order. A crucial element of Whiteley's thesis is that, contrary to established theory, Hopi society was not egalitarian but was controlled by a ruling elite, the pavansinom, who clandestinely planned such events as the destruction of Awatovi because of its reacceptance of Franciscan priests. Through an analysis of Bacavi social structure, Whiteley demonstrates how one fragment of a well-established society went about creating a new social order after the old one drastically fragmented. His detailed portrait of the history and social organization of a Hopi village represents an unusually rich resource for students of Hopi culture and history
