Abstract: The essays collected in this book provide profound insights into the wide-ranging topic of the fashionable queen: the manifold implications and effects that the combination of body, power and gender can have are examined by using different approaches and a variety of theoretical frameworks. By addressing queenly appearances in the past and the present, in politics and the media, in royalty and the middle-classes, in the arts and in popular culture, this book offers a new way of thinking of publically significant women, who exert, and at the same time subvert, their power through their attires and thereby negotiate notions of gender, class, power and media representation.

Abstract: Global News explores how media representation is conceived and enacted in a world of diversity and transborder flows. Among the ‘new media’ crowding the global mediascape are influential television outlets that promise viewers alternative vantage points to those of established Western broadcasters. The different worlds depicted by Al Jazeera English and Russia Today are compared with those of CNN International and BBC World. At a time when media organizations are slashing their budgets for international reporting, these channels represent a spectrum of financing solutions and relations to political power, being variously privately-, publicly-, or state-owned, backed by corporations, democratic states, authoritarian regimes, and ruling dynasties. Despite their differences, however, they have much in common. Their journalists espouse the universal values of professionalism and objectivity and speak to their global audiences in English. This book explores the different theoretical worlds of global media studies, takes a rare look at content, has a comparative perspective, and moves beyond the conflict frame that has dominated much of the literature in the field.
Abstract: «Alexa Robertson guides us through four major television news channels and shows us that their offerings differ in important ways. Imperial heritage lingers here, business considerations matter there – and the style of Russia Today will remind you of Fox News! Through an impressive combination of methods, she demonstrates both quantitative differences in coverage and qualitative differences in reporting genres. Read Global News, and you will be a more critically skilled consumer of the output of these channels ever after!» (Ulf Hannerz, Professor Emeritus, Stockholm University)...

Abstract: A Communication Perspective on the Military brings into focus the challenge of sense-making in the war state. How do military family members talk to one another about the stress of deployment on their lives? How do media – old and new – render the costs of war meaningful? How is the narrative of war rhetorically constructed? The dynamics of military family transactions, media-military relations, and war rhetoric reveal, reinforce, and may even disrupt U.S. war culture. Offering close analysis and thoughtful critique, this book reflects upon the ways the meaning of war is communicated in private lives, social relations, and public affairs. The collection highlights three broad areas of concern: communication in the military family; the military in the media; and rhetoric surrounding the military. Katheryn Maguire, Roger Stahl, and Gordon Mitchell introduce each section with overarching and integrative literature reviews that offer directions for the field. Each section includes six chapters reporting the latest research and offering suggestions for practical applications. The book is a must-have reference for military and communication scholars and an ideal text for graduate seminars and upper division undergraduate courses focusing on communication and the military.
Abstract: «A Communication Perspective on the Military provides one of the first comprehensive studies of the communicative dimensions of military relationships, martial theories, and military practices. This insightful book extends the work of humanists and social scientists who investigate the unique challenges that confront military families and other communities who must cope with the mediated coverage of wars as well as other military rhetorics. I anticipate that in the coming years this book will be considered ‘must’ reading for those who will soon be preparing syllabi for courses in military communication, critical security studies, and strategic military communication.» (Marouf Arif Hasian, University of Utah) «Given the powerful pull of militarism in our current culture and the centrality of communication practices and technologies to military operations, not enough attention has been paid to military communication. Fortunately, A Communication Perspective on the Military brings the full force of the communication discipline to bear upon this inherently fraught and difficult-to-manage terrain. The volume succeeds in drawing together a wide array of theoretical and methodological traditions to expand and inform the collective conversation in which we should all participate. Sahlstein Parcell and Webb prove that beginning such a complex international discussion should start with serious intellectual investigation. » (Jeremy Packer, University of Toronto) «Sahlstein Parcell and Webb have produced the most comprehensive collection of essays and empirical studies on communication and the military that our discipline has seen to date – works that are timely, theoretically grounded, and rich with exemplars. The editors bring together scholars from several areas of the communication discipline (e.g., family communication, media studies, rhetoric) whose research explores the military. Too often these areas of scholarship are read in isolation from each other, but this volume illustrates the potential for creating points of intersections between them.» (Steven R. Wilson, Purdue University)...

Abstract: This book deals with the subject of identity and identification within contemporary cultural studies and includes a selection of papers from the 14th International ‘Culture & Power’ Conference held in Ciudad Real, Spain, in 2010. The volume contributes to contemporary debates on identity-construction practices from various theoretical positions in different social, historic and national contexts. The initial section presents various theoretical discussions on how identity construction and identification phenomena are framed within current disciplinary debates about cultural studies and its future as an academic inter- and transdisciplinary field of enquiry. In the following sections, identity and identification processes are analysed from a variety of perspectives. In particular, the articles delve into the construction of marginalised identities and the exploration of identification processes that subvert dominant, established or accepted cultural identities. The authors explore the role of print media and videogames in constructing and representing identities; they examine the construction of masculinities and femininities in film, music and gay liberation movements; they analyse the interplay between globalisation and nationalism and its impact on cultural products in Asia or Africa; and provide examples of cultural history approaches to the articulation of several national identities. Considered together, the chapters engage with the most relevant concerns pervading identity theory and cultural studies today.

Abstract: Neil Postman’s most popular work, Amusing Ourselves to Death (1985), provided an insightful critique of the effects of television on public discourse in America, arguing that television’s bias towards entertaining content trivializes serious issues and undermines the basis of democratic culture. Lance Strate, who earned his doctorate under Neil Postman and is one of the leading media ecology scholars of our time, re-examines Postman’s arguments, updating his analysis and critique for the twenty-first-century media environment that includes the expansion of television programming via cable and satellite as well as the Internet, the web, social media, and mobile technologies. Integrating Postman’s arguments about television with his critique of technology in general, Strate considers the current state of journalism, politics, religion, and education in American culture. Strate also contextualizes Amusing Ourselves to Death through an examination of Postman’s life and career and the field of media ecology that Postman introduced. This is a book about our prospects for the future, which can only be based on the ways in which we think and talk about the present.
Abstract: «When Neil Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death is brought into the classroom, or given as a gift, or handed from one reader to another, a problem is created: into what frame should we place this book? For that’s how unique it is. Lance Strate has solved that problem by writing a graceful and learned companion to Postman’s original. It doubles as a biographical sketch of a great man and his intellectual times. It is also an act of love. And if you love the book it’s about, you will be grateful for Strate’s Amazing Ourselves to Death. I am. And I highly recommend it.» (Jay Rosen, Professor of Journalism, New York University) «Lance Strate masterfully brings to a new generation, and a new century, Neil Postman’s enligh-tening and essential insights into the ways that our uses of media reflect and reshape our society. He further shows how we can reclaim control, so we can use the ever-evolving media rather than letting them use us.» (Deborah Tannen, University Professor and Professor of Linguistics, Georgetown University) «This book, I believe, will remain a foundational text in the field of educational technology. The content presented by the author is based on validated teaching and learning theories and reliable pedagogical principles. For those who are not familiar with Postman’s body of work and that of his contemporaries, this homage is a useful compendium and foundation from which to examine emerging technologies and their impacts on culture and education.» (Diane Gayeski, Educational Technology, January/February 2015)...

Abstract: This edited collection comprises foundational texts and new contributions that revisit the theory of the «audience commodity» as first articulated by Dallas Smythe. Contributors focus on the historical and theoretical importance of this theory to critical studies of media/communication, culture, society, economics, and technology – a theory that has underpinned critical media studies for more than three decades, but has yet to be compiled in a single edited collection. The primary objective is to appraise its relevance in relation to changes in media and communication since the time of Smythe’s writing, principally addressing the rise of digital, online, and mobile media. In addition to updating this perspective, contributors confront the topic critically in order to test its limits. Contextualizing theories of the audience commodity within an intellectual history, they consider their enduring relationship to the field of media/communication studies as well as the important legacy of Dallas Smythe.
Abstract: «A timely and comprehensive collection that supplies readers with a thought-provoking juxtaposition of seminal works and cutting-edge communications research. This book confirms the continued relevance of Dallas Smythe’s theories and the need for ongoing debate, discussion, and scholarly work on the shifting roles of the audience-user in our increasingly global, increasingly digitized information society.» (Sara M. Grimes, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Information, University of Toronto) «Lee McGuigan and Vincent Manzerolle have assembled an invaluable collection of essays that reaffirm the lasting importance of Dallas Smythe’s foundational work on the complex relationships between commercial interests and the audiences they seek to exploit. Ranging from retrospectives to forward-looking analyses, this timely volume is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand how power operates in our digital age.» (Victor Pickard, Assistant Professor, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania)...

Abstract: Sensitive issues like migration and human mobility provoke paradigms and prejudices in public opinion. Media, Migration and Public Opinion is a collective effort of academic criticism to over-come these myths. The main motive of this book is linked to the fact that migration, media and public opinion related issues focusing on North Africa have not been addressed properly by available literature. Against this background, the objective of Media, Migration and Public Opinion pursues three aims: Firstly, it fills a gap in the scholarly literature regarding media, political communication and migration by shifting the focus to the North African countries Morocco, Algeria and Libya. Secondly, it assesses to what extent the paradigms of the «other» and its characterization as a source of problems established in receiving countries are also present in sending and transit countries. Thirdly, the book puts North African issues in relation to European countries by presenting case-studies focused on Spain, Malta and Switzerland in order to raise commonalities and differences.

Abstract: China has lived with the Internet for nearly two decades. Will increased Internet use, with new possibilities to share information and discuss news and politics, lead to democracy, or will it to the contrary sustain a nationalist supported authoritarianism that may eventually contest the global information order? This book takes stock of the ongoing tug of war between state power and civil society on and off the Internet, a phenomenon that is fast becoming the centerpiece in the Chinese Communist Party’s struggle to stay in power indefinitely. It interrogates the dynamics of this enduring contestation, before democracy, by following how Chinese society travels from getting access to the Internet to our time having the world’s largest Internet population. Pursuing the rationale of Internet regulation, the rise of the Chinese blogosphere and citizen journalism, Internet irony, online propaganda, the relation between state and popular nationalism, and finally the role of social media to bring about China’s democratization, this book offers a fresh and provocative perspective on the arguable role of media technologies in the process of democratization, by applying social norm theory to illuminate the competition between the Party-state norm and the youth/subaltern norm in Chinese media and society.
Abstract: «Insightful and timely, this book offers a rich analysis that brings the scholarship on Internet and democracy in China to a new level of holistic understanding. Drawing from solid empirical data and key historical knowledge, Dr. Lagerkvist connects classic political theory with China’s complex social reality, challenging conventional wisdom about Chinese authorities, political culture, and media system reform. Anyone interested in China’s media landscape and her democratic future should read this book.» (Jack Linchuan Qiu, Ph.D. Associate Professor, School of Journalism and Communication, The Chinese University of Hong Kong) «Johan Lagerkvist has produced the most comprehensive treatment of the internet in China we’ve yet seen. He examines topics as varied as state regulation, blogging, citizen journalism and online irony and nationalism, and links careful empirical research to evolving state, societal and business norms and the character of China’s regime. A welcome addition to a fast-growing literature, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the mass media and political communication in China.» (Kevin J. O’Brien, Alann P. Bedford Professor of Asian Studies and Political Science, University of California, Berkeley) «After the Internet provides an authoritative guide to the huge, cantankerous, controlled, unruly, ever-surprising world of over 400 million Internet users in China. From the Chinese blogosphere to government efforts to impose harmony, from Party ideotainment to irrepressible spoofing (egao) and the political irreverence of the «grass mud horse» phenomenon, to the shapes of government vs. popular nationalism, and even the recent Google imbroglio, Lagervist gives an insightful account based on wide-ranging research and intelligent engagement with current scholarship. This will be the standard guide to understanding the Chinese Internet for years to come.» (Timothy Cheek, Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia) «(...) Johan Lagerkvist should be congratulated on producing this comprehensive and useful analysis of China’s Internet landscape. This timely book addresses the wide range of critical issues pertaining to the democratic implications of Internet development in China, and deserves to be widely read by anyone concerned about changes in Chinese politics, society, and culture today.» (Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, International Journal of China Studies) «Lagerkvist offers a timely and rich analysis on the role of the Internet in China’s democratization process. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in China’s media landscape and her democratic future.» (Weiwei Zhang, International Journal of Communication 6, 2012)...

Abstract: "This collection considers postcolonial media culture in Britain from two main perspectives: what is created and what is represented. First, it looks at the ways black and minority ethnic groups have created art, music and film and also participated in particular types of broadcast and digital media. Second, the book is concerned with how these minorities and themselves represented in news, current affairs and documentary, in media policy and in fictional and other artistic forms"--Preface

Abstract: 'In this book, Richard Grusin demonstrates why he is one of the leading media and cultural theorists of our time. Lucid and convincing throughout, Premediation interrogates our mediatized futures, today. It is essential reading.' - Andrew Hoskins, University of Nottingham, UK 'Premediation offers an important counterpoint to the hegemony of futurism, a critical analysis of how visions and narratives of the future require more than a second glance. Grusin remediates his well known work on media, technology and time through an affective political sphere; one that, he argues, is cultivating an uncanny feeling of inevitability.' - Greg Elmer, Ryerson University, Canada
Abstract: In an era of heightened securitization, print, televisual and networked media have become obsessed with the 'pre-mediation' of future events. In response to the shock of 9/11, socially networked US and global media worked to pre-mediate collective affects of anticipation and connectivity, while also perpetuating low levels of apprehension or fear, The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 have been called the world's first live global media event. Responding to the immediacy and collective shock produced by live coverage of the collapse of the Twin Towers, print, televisual, and networked media have become obsessed with the pre-mediation of potential futures. In an era of heightened securitization, US and global media have attempted to prevent a recurrence of such media trauma by ensuring that no future will be able to emerge into the present that has not already been premeditated in the past. Socially networked US and global media work to premediate collective affects of anticipation and connectivity, while also perpetuating low levels of apprehension or fear. Following up on the groundbreaking work of media theory Remediation: Understanding New Media, Grusin develops the logic of premediation in terms of such concepts as mediality, the affective life of media, and the anticipation of security
