Abstract: In this book Saggi sulla teoria della letteratura ("Essays on the Theory of Literature") Enza Biagini puts in play her rich theoretical background and a vast knowledge of texts and authors to deal with some fundamental problems concerning literature, its status, its metamorphoses and its being necessary. Following modern paths, she leads the readers on the traces of different genres and situations difficult to define (the essay-writing, the unfinished ...), of 'temporary' themes always on the point of becoming something else (the nocturnal, the relationship between text and image. ..). The works revolve around the exergues and the definitions of the dictionaries: a whole world of suggestions and reasoning that the author finely brings not only to the field of theory, but also to the world of the Italian and French narrative

Parallel Title: Erscheint auch als Bartolommei, Girolamo, 1584 - 1622 Didascalia cioè dottrina comica libri tre

Abstract: Girolamo Bartolommei's literary research is characterised by the narration of actions carried out by sacred and profane subjects and by the narration of ancient fabulae, re-interpreted according to the principle of moral utility. Girolamo Bartolommei dealt with different forms of lyrical, epic, dramaturgical and musical writing, recalling 'the benign readers' of his works to the ethical and social function of poetry. His work Didascalia cioè dottrina comica ("Caption, that is comic doctrine" printed in Florence in 1658 and reprinted in 1661), of which the critical edition is here introduced, is of particular interest for the peculiarity of the theoretical proposal. Such proposal is ascribable to the aesthetic of the academy theatre, aimed at demonstrating to young writers that only the 'honesty' and the decorum of a 'well-ordered comedy' could lift the fate of comic art from the degradation in which it had fallen. The author tries to convey this idea by proceeding from questions of general poetics up to the 'sketches of middle comedies' he composed himself

Abstract: As scattered pieces of a composite artistic path to be reassembled, the personal notes, writing tests, private letters and reviews kept by Giuseppe Dessí over the years allow Nicola Turi, who had already been following the author's footsteps for some time, to reconstruct the sources of inspiration, the composition and revision processes, as well as the main stages of the critical reception of a work crossing the best part of the 20th century in Italy with an elegant gait which constantly brings it in on the same level as the great European models: a philosophical background which is always up to date, and the very fine sensitivity of someone who knows how to grasp the imperceptible movements of the human soul and the great changes of history at the same time. This volume is the result of a long archival work and, also by virtue of the bibliography (by and on the author) placed in the appendix, it aims at functioning as a journey through Dessí's texts and, at the same time, at offering the readers the necessary hermeneutical support to understand his works

Abstract: With the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Dessí's birth approaching, in 2009, the Committee in charge of the celebrations launched in a widespread dissemination activity of the writer's work in many European countries. And since the translations (the main objective of the project) required a complex knowledge of the author, his style, the dialogue and the difference with the reference culture, it was suggested to study and promote them not only through the reconstruction of the history and typicality of the author's narrative path, but also through the reconstruction of his scarce reception abroad within the framework, in the case of Dessí, of the presence, outside national borders, of Italian literature in the second half of the 20th century. Through the examination of books, editorial catalogues, magazines, anthologies, and thanks to the commitment of scholars and young collaborators of Italian and foreign universities, it is now France, England, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Finland, Sweden and many more at the centre of the attention, with their reading preferences and aversions, together with Italy, and with the themes, stories, characters of the writer to whom this book is dedicated

Abstract: Jorge Eduardo Eielson (Lima 1924 - Milan 2006) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936; Winner of the Nobel prize in 2010) are certainly two 'exemplary Peruvians', as they have both started by digging into the history and social conflicts of their country, before opening up to global culture and reality with an interdisciplinary and intercultural spirit: Vargas Llosa did so using fiction, theatre, non-fiction and journalism; Eielson used poetry, the visual arts, non-fiction and journalism. The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems

Abstract: The initial idea for this volume was born while rethinking the organisation of the University of Florence following the recent reform, with the aim of retracing the evolution of the Faculty of Engineering throughout its 40 years, telling and documenting its history, collecting memories and documents from a period characterised by significant changes. The research carried out by the curators and many colleagues has progressively broadened the horizon of the work to collect not only the contents of the academic history but also those of the "civil" history of the Faculty, observing its laborious growth, affirmation and consolidation in the Florentine University, and also noting the relationships with the social and economic context (the city, the region, the national and international involvement) that surrounds a significant collective entity such as "our" Faculty of Engineering. This made it possible to explore and document relevant areas that are fundamental for a non-trivial knowledge of how many actors have crossed the scenario of the Faculty and of which phenomena the Faculty itself has been an observer and protagonist. Thus, the work has been enriched with a great number of contents, declined in each chapter with pleasant energy and that are difficult to summarise in a purely historical or celebratory paradigm. If we try and visualise the readers of this volume, we think of those who will find there the path of their life, who will there find the roots of the present and who will want to discover the reasons for the future

Abstract: A private and distant Sardinia animates the texts of this double correspondence, between archaic landscapes and personal and literary mythologies, in which Ferrara, the town of the authors' youthful years, is occasionally mentioned, with its richness of life, magazines (Bottai's «Primato», «Corriere Padano» with Bassani...), evening meetings in taverns or rented rooms, walks along the Rampari river, and the use of playful nicknames which would continue even after youth ended. A world made of concrete things, animated and enlivened by strong intellectual curiosities and passions, emerges from the letters reconstructing the life and history of Giuseppe Dessí, Mario Pinna and Claudio Varese, which have been carefully transcribed and annotated by Costanza Chimirri. The correspondence opens with the years spent in Ferrara - after Pisa, a crucial moment for their education - and allows the author to reconstruct atmospheres and environments, readings and work, offering a significant cross-section of twentieth-century Italy from within. The letters are never disconnected from one another, but rather united by the continuous call to the triple friendship in the name of Giuseppe Dessí, who is always present in the others' speeches even when he is not actually mentioned. The correspondence also allowed to bring to light unpublished texts by the most secluded member of the group (Mario Pinna, an avid reader of the classics, Spanish specialist, author of poems in the dialect of Logudoro and of short stories set in Sardinia), to strengthen the role that has always been played by the eldest, Claudio Varese, the maître-camarade; and to confirm once again how much Dessí's creative universe, deeply marked by the biographical element, has continued to develop and feed under the wise and affectionate gaze of fraternal friends, in an exchange which can give life to an actual collective imagination

Abstract: It is a Sardinia out of time, on the threshold of history, the one emerging from the pages of Giuseppe Dessí's novels and short stories. But it is also a living Sardinia, full of the contradictions occurring in the landscape and in the vicissitudes of men. The profound relationship which bound Dessí to his land, nourishing his fiction, non-fiction and intellectual works, stands out noticeably in the correspondence collected in this volume. The unpublished letters, found in four different Italian archives, were transcribed and duly annotated by Giulio Vannucci. They tell about the birth and composition of a 1951 special issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte» dedicated to Sardinia, and reconstruct the genesis of the splendid anthology «Scoperta della Sardegna», issued in 1965 by Alberto Vigevani's publisher «Il Polifilo». In those two extraordinary books, the writer left the narrating voice to others for once. Within them, he built a different choral story of the island not only through the words of friends, but also through those of scholars, historians, politicians and many more. In the case of «Il Ponte», Dessí put himself at Calamandrei's service to find suitable collaborators and talk about post World War Two Sardinia, while choosing researchers who could trace a new and original guide for the cultural discovery of the island for «Il Polifilo». The correspondence goes over all of this, but also over culture in the Sixties and the dialogues and intellectual tensions accompanying Dessí in the writing of two works which, thanks to their anthropological and social acuity, still tell the modern reader of a 'vital home' that was his

Abstract: In the first pages of the Zibaldone, Leopardi had noted that the "love of learning" induces a passion for philosophy, making it a foundational element of modern culture. In this perspective, then, no doubt remains as to the prominent position of Voltaire's Candide, or of Rousseau's thought, which combines philosophical thinking, educational demands, political passion and autobiography. However, in order to move from the count to the novel, from the apologue and from the treatises to complex characters who also maintain a strong and speculative allure, one had to leave the 18th century, experience Romanticism, feed the rêveries of the new promeneurs solitaires during the following century, with the restlessness and the questions of Dostoevsky, Kafka, Sartre, Camus, and of Pirandello, Proust, Musil and many others; of those who combined the passion for short stories with the unmasking of any deceptive theodicy. Bringing the the novel back to bourgeois intertwining and existential anxieties, starting from Cervantes's ironic way of thinking. In the absence of declarations, however, where does one find the evidence of the presence of the philosophique in the novel, or how does one identify texts pertaining to the definition of roman philosophique? This book, conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, does not only raises the problem, but tries to solve it as well. At the same time, it brings the ideas of the novel and from the novel together with constructive theories, and compares the insignificant with significance, mythical emblems and codes, semiosis and destiny, while also observing how language, in the parade of the authors, changes itself and even touches the figurativeness of the graphic-novel. This volume constitutes the final point of arrival of a path which, in samples, locks significant fragments in the otherwise infinite kaleidoscope of narration

Abstract: Leonardo Sciascia e la funzione sociale degli intellettuali collects the translations of three writings that have already appeared in English-speaking scientific journals - L'onore, il qualunquismo e l'essenzialismo ne L'antimonio di Sciascia, Sciascia e La scomparsa di Majorana and De L'Affaire Moro e della (ri)scrittura della storia - as well as an in-depth introduction that provides an overview of the author's research results on Sciascia - from which a much more conservative Sciascia than is commonly believed is revealed - as well as an analysis of Sciascia's poetics (centred on the public self-image of the "spoiler"). The essay ends with a concluding chapter where the last decade of Sciascia's career is examined (the period after L'Affaire Moro and the participation of the Sicilian writer in the Moro Commission) during which the author publishes various collections of essays - such as La strega e il capitano, 1912+1, Una storia semplice - and traces an essay on Telesio Interlandi, ideologue of the discriminatory legislation of 1938

Abstract: This volume completes the valuable work of cataloguing carried out on the correspondence of Giuseppe Dessí conserved in the 'Alessandro Bonsanti' contemporary archive of Florence. The research, launched by Chiara Andrei in 2003 with the edition of the Corrispondenze familiari (Firenze University Press) and continued in 2009 by Francesca Nencioni with the publication of Lettere di amici e lettori (Firenze University Press), has its third result in this work by Francesca Nencioni, who has indexed the unpublished editorial and professional material, providing it with exhaustive references. The letters make it possible to trace a profile of the writer from his youth through to the 70s, illustrating the historic, political and cultural backdrop against which the events and activities of both his first and second profession developed. This casts light not only his complex professional career, but also on Dessí's collaboration with newspapers and journals, his relations with publishers and his contacts with the world of the mass media. Of particular importance is the appendix of unpublished letters, meticulously edited by Monica Graceffa, comprising the correspondence with two seminal journals of the 1930s and 40s «L'Orto» and «Primato». In the background are the figures of Bottai and Vecchietti and the complex coexistence between the intellectuals of the time and the regime

Abstract: 53 writers invited to speak, as artists, of themselves and their world at the beginning of the new millennium in no more than 2002 keystrokes. A new research criterion with which Fonti di Weltliteratur. Ungheria obtains the real and literary data for a theoretical specification of the state and behaviour of the cultural sphere in the globalized context, in the critical passage constituted - for the political and economic spheres as well - by a transformation of linguistic-national realities. Brief historical notes on the recent and current status of the writer in a Hungary passing from dictatorship to democracy in the end enable light to be thrown on the possible fate of the general figure of the intellectual in the perspective of the realization of a Goethean Weltliteratur. Abstract: It has been a long history of Information Technology innovations within the Cultural Heritage areas. The Performing arts has also been enforced with a number of new innovations which unveil a range of synergies and possibilities. Most of the technologies and innovations produced for digital libraries, media entertainment and education can be exploited in the field of performing arts, with adaptation and repurposing. Performing arts offer many interesting challenges and opportunities for research and innovations and exploitation of cutting edge research results from interdisciplinary areas. For these reasons, the ECLAP 2012 can be regarded as a continuation of past conferences such as AXMEDIS and WEDELMUSIC (both pressed by IEEE and FUP). ECLAP is an European Commission project to create a social network and media access service for performing arts institutions in Europe, to create the e-library of performing arts, exploiting innovative solutions coming from the ICT

Abstract: This monograph discusses scalar verb classes. It tests theories of linguistic form and meaning, arguments and thematic roles, using Estonian data. The analyses help to understand the aspectual structure of Estonian. In Estonian, transitive verbs fall into aspectual classes based on the type of case-marking of objects and adjuncts. The book relates the morphosyntactic frames of verbs to properties typically associated with adjectives and nouns: scalarity and boundedness. Verbs are divided according to how their aspect is composed. Some verbs lexicalize a scale, which can be bounded either lexically or compositionally. Aspectual composition involves the unification of features. Compositionally derived structures differ according to which of the aspectually relevant dimensions are bounded

Abstract: Author of Architettura del medioevo in Sardegna which won him the Premio Nazionale Olivetti in 1956, Raffaello Delogu was an art historian and Commissioner for Antiquities and Monuments in Sardinia, Abruzzo and Sicily. His correspondence with one of the most eminent Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century, as transcribed and lavishly annotated here by Monica Graceffa, reveals him not only as a committed intellectual devoted to the study of ancient and modern art, but also as a caustic and playful friend. His dialogue with Giuseppe Dessí commenced in their youth, when Dessí was an amateur painter on the way to maturity, who instead rapidly developed into a mature writer and attentive connoisseur of all forms of art. In addition to their studies and mutual friends (including Claudio Varese and Maria Lai), they also shared an interest in painting and in what Dessí was experiencing (his moves, his political passion) and what he was writing (fiction, drama, essays); important in this regard are the letters touching on the collaboration of both on the Sardinian issue of Pietro Calamandrei's «Il Ponte»

Abstract: Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party. The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968

Abstract: The 2002 Nobel Prize to Imre Kertész is a symptom: Hungary is now weltliterarisch. The historical process - which has seen Hungarian writers working since the 1970s to gain ontological autonomy for their field, to write in a language that is not mendacious, to go beyond the 'modern' of real socialism to a 'postmodern' in which reality is not "described", but "employed", and to anthropic ends - is at a standstill, it is greeted abroad as a common heritage. According to Ungheria 1945-2002. La dimensione letteraria - which concludes a prolonged period of analytical work (see Scrivere postmoderno in Ungheria, 1995, and Scrittori ungheresi allo specchio, 2003) - the Hungarian contribution to the contemporary era lies in its sense for this anthropic function of literature (even though the context now seems to want to thwart this effort)

Abstract: The book sets out to reconstruct why and how poetry and prose came to meet and mix in Italy between the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century; contrary to what has taken place in France for the petit poème en prose, there has been no overall mapping of the Italian sphere to give refreshed sense to single phenomena. The author begins to fill this gap by looking at three areas of research: the Scapigliatura movement, the experimentations of the last two decades of the nineteenth century (from Ragusa Moleti to Pica, Deledda to Capuana), and «La Voce» 1908-1913. Two works are constantly used as inevitable points of reference: Operette morali by Leopardi and Petits poèmes en prose by Baudelaire

Abstract: Despite the indisputable richness of the Montalian bibliography, there still was no comment on a fundamental collection such as La bufera e altro, published, after a complex and protracted gestation, by Neri Pozza in 1956. The aim of this book is to fill that void, giving a first contribution to the exegesis of one of Montale's densest - and most difficult - works, where the poet draws the conclusions of a long research to restart his own inexhaustible search for new languages and imagery. Between preliminary introductions (proper essays) and notes, she tries to take stock of the matter by comparing the various existing critical hypotheses and proposing - in a close hand-to-hand with the text, verse by verse, problematising rather than glossing over - an original interpretative line

Abstract: Literary trompe-l'oeil intends to emancipate the enigmatic and distinctive figure of Hauff from his long and unjust marginalization resulting from a now outdated current of criticism, to offer a new interpretation of his Märchen for a general rereading of this modern literary caricaturist's works. On approaching his texts, one cannot but notice how they are imbued with continual and insistent, bewitching, caustic and alienating allusions, just like the Mona Lisa's smile. With a constant critical scepticism and a subtle illusionist skill, this demythologized 'budding Satan' looks at the present situation through the 'diabolic lenses' of irony, making his works a sort of literary Befreiungskrieg, in which he lays claim to a heterotopic space of free fantastic-humorist expression, along the undulating route leading from Sterne to Heine via Jean Paul

Abstract: The volume begins with an analysis of the reception of Jean Paul in Italy in order to highlight how the Scapigliatura movement raised this author to prominence. In consideration of the development of Italian culture in the second half of the nineteenth century, the book stresses the importance of the German models in the changes in the macro- and microstructures of the literary text. The core of the research revolves around Carlo Dossi's relationship with the works of Jean Paul: from the enthusiasm of his first literary discoveries to his progressive detachment. In this study, the Note azzurre provide a precious source on the life of Dossi, his relationship with contemporary society and his bond with the maestro Jean Paul, leading to a closer investigation of two aspects: the philosophical-aesthetic conception of humour and the use of digression as a narrative element introduced to disorientate the reader

Abstract: The stars of the correspondence of Caroline Michaelis-Böhmer-Schlegel-Schelling (1763-1809), one of the most intriguing female figures in the German Romantic movement, are the relations with and between major exponents of the German scene of Enlightenment and Revolution, Classicism and Romanticism. Framed between an introduction dealing with Caroline herself and a detailed critical apparatus, Illuminismo e Rivoluzione, Classicismo e Romanticismo. Caroline Schlegel-Schelling: «Ero seduta qui a scrivere». Lettere proposes some of the most impassioned letters from her extensive correspondence in a document that is at once biographical, artistic, historical and literary. Fifty selected letters (plus an appendix with several letters she received from Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis), in a compilation that aims to cast light on the lively critical sensitivity combined with genuine literary talent that made Caroline the heart and soul of the Romanticism of Jena

Abstract: If it intends to enhance awareness and to stimulate intellectual and cultural maturity, literature cannot ignore - and when it survives over time does not ignore - the great conquests of philosophical thought and the fundamental stages marked by the progress of scientific knowledge. A scientific result and a poetic result both represent an internally-ordered fragment of reality which moves and stirs us by the intrinsic beauty of the image that it evokes and its significance at the level of meaning. Both scientific and literary languages, each in its own way, tend to the decodification and representation of the external world. Imagination, intuition and rationality come together in creativity, in the construction of scientific models and of literary styles

Abstract: In these private notes, the quest for the self appears like a journey of dual metaphorical significance through the intricate weft of the pages and the labyrinth of life. The Diari 1952-1962 of Giuseppe Dessí are presented here in Franca Linari's meticulous transcription accompanied by an introduction and an attentive commentary by Francesca Nencioni. Following the previous volumes, which made it possible to reconstruct the history of his youthful education and the productions of his early maturity, this one now reveals significant changes in the writer's life. A new female figure (Luisa) accompanies a period in which the narrative production that has become the dominant passion becomes decidedly more intensive and continuative, hand-in-hand with an increase in the collaborations with journals and the desire to experiment new forms of expression ushered in by the theatre

Abstract: The topics of physicality and face in Kleist and Kafka as well as the problem of perception, which are the focus of this work, fit seamlessly into the context of a fruitful exchange of different scientific experiences. The present work underlines and promotes a double perspective: the methodology of German studies, which is based on philosophy and cultural anthropology, on the one hand, and the literary and art-historical approach of the Italian, historical and humanistic tradition on the other, which is still clinging, in a certain way, to the canon of beauty of the late Renaissance

Abstract: Sponsored by the University of Florence, the "National Committee for the celebrations of the bicentenary of the birth of Antonio Meucci" had multiple goals. These included: fostering a knowledge of the historic period in which Antonio Meucci lived in Florence, where he was born on 13 April 1808; contributing to spread and enhance technical-scientific culture among secondary school and university students; offering an occasion for reflection on the future of telecommunications from the perspective of technological innovation and the legal, regulatory, economic and social aspects; underscoring the influence of the telephone on the evolution of language, customs and means of expression, and finally co-ordinating and enhancing other initiatives not directly sponsored by the Committee. This book "Il telefono & dintorni" brings together a selection of the events, contributions and 'images' selected from among the numerous initiatives organised by the Meucci Committee over its three years of activity

Abstract: The concept of the literary canon is one of the most debated and controversial in the western intellectual tradition. This book offers ten contributions by Italian scholars of Anglo-American culture addressing the way in which the concept of the literary canon holds out against areas traditionally considered as external or extraneous to it. The essays range over different topics: the etymological analysis of the term "canon"; the relations between canon and performativity; paraliterature - a universe populated by non-hierarchic genres; the relations between post-colonial literature and the canon; postmodern biofiction; studies on translation and finally gay and lesbian literature. The book ends with a meditation on the innovations wrought on the Anglo-American canon by the virtual world of Internet and with a reading proposal originating from a different area of literary studies. Taken as a whole, the intention of the book is to pave the way to democratisation and pluralism in literary studies, going beyond the limitations set by the traditional scale of values of the "western canon". It proposes a frequentation of the geographical and cultural borderlines and hence of the areas of resistance that such borderlines pose to the dominant conceptual hierarchies within and around us, enabling us to glimpse an original future for literature and for western culture in a broader sense

Abstract: This book addresses a subject of great interest for German culture, and that of Europe in general: the emergence and development in Germany, indicatively between 1890 and 1930, of an eclectic pan-artistic movement aimed at renewal of the art of printing and the circulation of artistic books. The author takes his cue from an analysis of the decline in the quality of the book as object, degraded to a serial product and deprived of its artistic specificity by the modern book industry, in order to offer a complete overview of the different expressions of the Buchkunstbewegung. Prominent figures of illustrators and publishers are the subject of in-depth study, as are the printing works and the journals that had the greatest cultural influence at the time, from the original viewpoint of their bibliophilic production

Abstract: Based loosely on Primo Levi's Il Sistema Periodico, the play is set in a Fahrenheit 451 scenario. In this world without either books or memory, a man of the street arrives with a bundle of not easily decipherable papers: with the help of the narrative voice, of his friends - Science, Technology and Nature - and of two actors at length off-stage, Primo and his friend Alberto, the man succeeds in reconstructing the episode of the story Cerio. Through memory he thus reconstructs the lost identity, that is our history. Science, Technology and Nature allow the man without memory to master scientific knowledge and free himself from his state. The drama finds its catharsis in a poignant passage, inspired by the story Carbonio, which lyrically sets up a temporal link between an atom of carbon from the smoke of a crematorium and the same dwelling within the body of each one of us: a poetic parabola of a science immersed in the life and history of man

Abstract: This book is the fifth and last volume of the Diari of Giuseppe Dessí, a publication made possible by Franca Linari's transcription combined with the attentive editorship of Francesca Nencioni. The series began with the account of Dessí's early years (1926-1931) and continued with precious details of the period of his development (1931-1948) and the literary production of his maturity (1949-1951; 1952-1962). This time the author's experience and his own notes enable what is almost an 'autobiography of the artistic process' that offers eloquent insight into the creation of Paese d'ombre: not only a reconstruction of the genesis of the novel that won Dessí the Premio Strega, but also the sketching out of events and characters and the gradual definition of the plot. The literary evidence does not stop here, since significant texts of his theatrical production (Eleonora d'Arborea) can also be placed in this last fifteen years, along with narrative (for example Lei era l'acqua). All is set against the backdrop of family, friends (who also suddenly disappear), political passion and a courageous struggle against disease

Abstract: This book is a collection of some of the most interesting work by Maria Di Salvo compiled on the occasion of her sixty-fifth birthday. These articles reflect her intellectual curiosity, her clarity of exposition and the capacity to apply and amalgamate different methodologies and disciplines, blending them into a coherent whole despite the variety of topics and subjects of study. We have favoured the essays that are harder to get hold of, making selections that enable the identification of two essential groups: the philological and literary studies and those related to the relations between Russia and Italy. We trust that the choices made will offer an organic overview of the intellectual and academic career of Maria Di Salvo, including the latest 'new path' of research, that on punctuation in the Slavic languages, and while awaiting the imminent publication by Edizioni dell'Orso, of the part devoted to Russia in the memoirs of Filippo Balatri, the famous castrato sent by the Grand Duke of Tuscany to the Russian court at the end of the seventeenth century

Abstract: The passage of time has not dulled the interest and fascination of the Prague Spring. Proof of this was provided on the occasion of the celebrations for the fortieth anniversary of the events in Czechoslovakia in 1968, greeted all over Europe including Italy by a packed programme of conferences, exhibitions and publications. This book too stemmed from an initiative organised to mark the anniversary, the conference entitled Primavera di Praga, risveglio europeo. Through the reflections of twelve Italian and Czech writers, it aims to help in the recollection and reconstruction of what was, despite its limitations and contradictions, at once the most considered and the most generous attempt at reform of real socialism

Abstract: Focusing on the history of scientific and technological development over recent centuries, the book is dedicated to the history of telecommunications, where Italy has always been in the vanguard, and is presented by many of the protagonists of the last half century. The book is divided into five sections. The first, dealing with the origins, starts from the scientific bases of the evolution of telecommunications in the nineteenth century (Bucci), addressing the developments of scientific thought that led to the revolution of the theory of fields (Morando), analysing the birth of the three fundamental forms of communication - telegraph (Maggi), telephone (Del Re) and radio (Falciasecca) - and ending with the contribution made by the Italian Navy to the development of telecommunications (Carulli, Pelosi, Selleri, Tiberio). The second section, on technical and scientific developments, presents the numerical processing of signals (Rocca), illustrating the genesis and metamorphosis of transmission (Pupolin, Benedetto, Mengali, Someda, Vannucchi), network packets (Marsan, Guadagni, Lenzini), photonics in telecommunications (Prati) and addresses the issue of research within the institutions (Fedi-Morello), dwelling in particular on the CSELT (Mossotto). The next section deals with the sectors of application, offering an overview of radio, television and the birth of digital cinema (Vannucchi, Visintin), military communications (Maestrini, Costamagna), the development of radar (Galati) and spatial telecommunications (Tartara, Marconicchio). Section four, on the organisation of the services and the role of industry, outlines the rise and fall of the telecommunications industries in Italy (Randi), dealing with the telecommunications infrastructures (Caroppo, Gamerro), the role of the providers in national communications (Gerarduzzi), the networks and the mobile and wireless services (Falciasecca, Ongaro) and finally taking a look towards the future from the perspective of the last fifty years (Vannucchi). The last section, dealing with training and dissemination, offers an array of food for thought: university training in telecommunications, with focus on the evolution of legislation and on the professional profiles (Roveri), social and cultural aspects (Longo and Crespellani) as well as a glance over the most important museums, collections and documentary sources for telecommunications in Italy (Lucci, Savini, Temporelli, Valotti). The book is designed to offer a compendium comprising different analytical approaches, and aims to foster an interest in technology in the new generations, in the hope of stimulating potentially innovative research

The survey also examines realities of secondary importance that contributed to enriching the urban cultural fabric, such as the minor stages, the sacred theatre and private entertainment. A broader overview also allows the readers to frame the scope of festive celebrations and occasions for public entertainment, presented through significant exempla

Abstract: The book comprises studies of twenty-four texts of Slavic-ecclesiastical production composed to recount the lives and celebrate the memory of eleven saints of the Russian Orthodox church who lived between the tenth and the seventeenth centuries: Ol'ga of Kiev (†969), Evfrosinija of Polock (†1173), Fevronija of Murom (†1228), Evfrosinija of Suzdal' (†1250), Anna of Kašin (XIII-XIV sec.), Sof'ja of Tver (XIII-XIV sec.), Vassa of Nižnij Novgorod (†1378), Julianija of Vjaz'ma (†1406), Evdokija of Moscow (†1407), Sof'ja of Suzdal' (†1542) and Julianija of Lazar'evo (†1604). Leaving to the historians the task of establishing the reliability of the hagiographic accounts handed down by the sources, the author intends to highlight the cultural influence of the texts in question. The analysis of the stylistic features, of the motifs and the bibliographical-liturgical citations contained in them, brings to light a characteristic profile of the female hagiography, identifying the image of the 'bride of Christ' as the model of sanctity for women. This interpretative key represents an initial approach to issues that have been addressed to date only in a superficial and sporadic manner as regards the East Slavic tradition, although they have begun to receive their due attention in the Latin and Byzantine sphere

Abstract: The long reign of Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371), the penultimate emperor of Bulgaria prior to the Turkish conquest, was marked by a series of successful military campaigns against Serbia and Byzantium and above all by an intensive cultural production, largely fostered and funded by the sovereign himself. The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes and his parallel activities as a strategist and an illuminated patron of the arts. For the first time, the Italian reader can find collected and translated all the manuscript sources relating to the Bulgarian sovereign. The book is completed by an appendix with the original texts of the Slavonic-ecclesiastical tradition

Abstract: This book contains the proceedings of the study day devoted to "Firenze e Dubrovnik all'epoca di Marino Darsa (1508-1567)"which was held in Florence on 31 January 2009. In addition to exploring the work of the playwright and the subjects he addressed, the contributions also map out the cultural and economic context of his work, dwelling in particular on the influence and importance that the relations between Tuscany, and Florence in particular, and Dubrovnik (Ragusa) had upon his production. Enhanced by a short biography of Marin Držić and a selection of critical articles, the publication is addressed to scholars while also being proposed as a tool for teaching on university courses, providing an initial introduction to the man and his work, undeservedly little known, set against the political and economic background of his time

Abstract: This book addresses certain aspects of the religious thought of H.S. Skovoroda (demonology, the struggle against sin, the spiritualisation of worldly time) against the background of Neoplatonism in its Judaic-Christian interpretation and the Byzantine mystic-ascetic tradition. The author proposes an analysis of Skovoroda's dialogues in which the search for Neoplatonist sources is combined with the identification of elements that can be traced to the tripartite breakdown of the spiritual progress of the Christian into praxis, gnosis. This division, typical of the Eastern Church, conceives spiritual life as an ascending path organised in progressive levels. The study of Skovoroda's universe-text yields two constants. The first is an intense interrelation between the Text and the divine Logos (the Biblical word), which, replicating the schema envisioned in the Christianisation of the cosmology of the Timeo, becomes an active architectural component of the same. The second is an image of the world dominated by a vertical/centripetal orientation, which implies the possibility of a return of things to God, the ultimate end of the path leading from the praxis to the theoria

Abstract: The subject around which the contributions in this volume gravitate is the creation of a higher institute of engineering studies in Florence in the late nineteenth-century. On the eve of the unification of Italy, Florence was a promising centre for a Polytechnic, in view of the experience of the Corpo di Ingegneri di Acque e Strade, the precocious railway building, the importance of the mining sector and the solidity of the Istituto Tecnico Toscano. Despite this, unlike what took place in Milan and in Turin, the Istituto Tecnico Toscano was not transformed into a Polytechnic for the training of engineers. The reasons for this non-development can be traced to the lack of "industrialist" propensities in the managerial group that emerged victorious from the "peaceful revolution" of 1859, to a desire for independence from the national academic system built on the Casati law, and to a local demand for engineering skills that was less dynamic than expected. Consequently, the prevailing winds were those of "normalisation" blowing from the government, the universities and the most prestigious Colleges of Engineers. Nevertheless, Florence continued to represent an important technological centre, especially in relation to railway infrastructures, public works, and the mechanical engineering industries (for example Pignone and Galileo). In the end it was not until one hundred years after unification that the city finally became the seat of a Faculty of Engineering
