    Abstract: Aristotle offers a conception of the private and its relationship to the public that suggests a remedy to the limitations of liberalism today, according to Judith A. Swanson. In this fresh and lucid interpretation of Aristotle's political philosophy, Swanson challenges the dominant view that he regards the private as a mere precondition to the public. She argues, rather, that for Aristotle private activity develops virtue and is thus essential both to individual freedom and happiness and to the well-being of the political order. Swanson presents an innovative reading of The Politics which revises our understanding of Aristotle's political economy and his views on women and the family, slavery, and the relation between friendship and civic solidarity. She examines the private activities Aristotle considers necessary to a complete human life—maintaining a household, transacting business, sustaining friendships, and philosophizing. Focusing on ways Aristotle's public invests in the private through law, rule, and education, she shows how the public can foster a morally and intellectually virtuous citizenry. In contrast to classical liberal theory, which presents privacy as a shield of rights protecting individuals from one another and from the state, for Aristotle a regime can attain self-sufficiency only by bringing about a dynamic equilibrium between the public and the private. The Public and the Private in Aristotle's Political Philosophy will be essential reading for scholars and students of political philosophy, political theory, classics, intellectual history, and the history of women

Pope Joan was not betrayed by a lover or discovered by an enemy; her downfall came when she went into labor during a papal procession through the streets of Rome. From the myth of Joan to the experiences of saints, nuns, and ordinary women, The Oldest Vocation brings to life both the richness and the troubling contradictions of Christian motherhood in medieval Europe. After tracing the roots of medieval ideologies of motherhood in early Christianity, Clarissa W. Atkinson reconstructs the physiological assumptions underlying medieval notions about women's bodies and reproduction; inherited from Greek science and popularized through the practice of midwifery, these assumptions helped shape common beliefs about what mothers were. She then describes the development of "spiritual motherhood" both as a concept emerging out of monastic ideologies in the early Middle Ages and as a reality in the lives of certain remarkable women. Atkinson explores the theological dimensions of medieval motherhood by discussing the cult of the Virgin Mary in twelfth-century art, story, and religious expression. She also offers a fascinating new perspective on the women saints of the later Middle Ages, many of whom were mothers; their lives and cults forged new relationships between maternity and holiness. The Oldest Vocation concludes where most histories of motherhood begin—in early modern Europe, when the family was institutionalized as a center of religious and social organization. Decidiu por isso a autora realizar um trabalho de campo sobre os Vankar, casta Intocável de tecelões do Estado do Gujarat. Ao leitor é proporcionada uma apresentação fascinante do universo Vankar, através das suas práticas e rituais, dos seus deuses e demónios, dos seus mitos. Arigidez atribuída à hierarquia do sistema social indiano é relativizada. Defende a autora que existem inúmeras passagens, contactos e contaminações entre castas - em teoria rigorosamente separadas umas das outras. Em particular, é sugerido que, quando a ordem social e cósmica está ameaçada de ruptura, os últimos passam, num certo sentido, a ser os primeiros. Cabe então à casta mais desvalorizada (Intocável) assumir o poder de sustentar ou restabelecer a ordem vacilante. Em Reis e Intocáveis, Rosa Maria Perez confronta-nos com um caso exemplar. Na aldeia de Valthera, atingida pela grande seca de 1985-1988, os Vankar são solicitados por toda a população, e em primeiro lugar pelos Rajput (a casta dominante), a exercer o poder de trazer a chuva, atributo partilhado com o soberano hindu.     Abstract: La résistance au protestantisme, durant les années de paix qui suivent l'édit d'Amboise, fut ritualisée par le miracle de Laon (1566), dont l'actrice principale fut la jeune femme, Nicole Obry, originaire de Vervins en Picardie. Possédée d'une trentaine de diables « elle en était tellement tourmentée qu'on lui oyait craquer les os... » - disait à l'époque Florimond de Raemond. Suite aux exorcismes successifs, effectués à l'aide de l'hostie (donc du « corps de notre Seigneur ») les diables quittent la jeune femme. Seul Beelzebub résiste. Enfin, le 6 février 1566 lui aussi sort, s'inclinant ainsi devant le pouvoir épiscopal. Le présent ouvrage est le premier à examiner les divers récits dont fit l'objet le miracle de Laon entre 1566 et 1578. Le cabaliste chrétien, Guillaume Postel, y voit la réalisation de la suprématie politique et religieuse « gauloise » et le début de l'ère nouvelle. Jean Boulaese, amanuensis de Postel et chroniqueur le plus zélé du miracle, considère celui-ci tantôt comme moyen d'obtenir de l'argent en vue de l'impression de la Bible en langue arabe, tantôt comme moyen de promouvoir sa propre carrière. Christophe de Héricourt, doyen de Laon, et chroniqueur dit « officiel » ou « royal », veut surtout éviter d'offenser les huguenots. Enfin, Barthélemy de Faye, conseiller-clerc au Parlement de Paris, cherche par son récit, à faire de la propagande tant pour les décrets tridentins sur la résidence des évêques que pour un gallicanisme modéré. Les récits du miracle de Laon fournissent ainsi un excellent témoignage de la diversité des catholicismes français à l'époque mouvementée des guerres de religion

Conservée dans un manuscrit unique de la bibliothèque Municipale de Lille (fonds Godefroy 50) cette œuvre fut exécutée avant 1467 dans le scriptorium de Jean de Wavrin et se trouvait à cette date, dans la bibliothèque de Philippe de Bon. Notre roman représente la mise en prose d'un roman en vers, le Roman du châtelain de Coucy et de la dame de Fayel, composé à l'époque de Philippe le Bel par un certain Jakemes. Il illustre la légende du Cœur mangé, histoire trompé fait manger à sa femme le cœur de son amant. Sous des formes variées, de nombreux récits ont illustré cette légende que l'Inde a connue elle aussi : deux contes français des xiie et xiiie siècles, le lai de Guiron et le lai d'Ignauré, une nouvelle de Boccace (la 9e, la IVe journée du Décaméron), une nouvelle française du xvie s. (La 7e des Contes amoureux de Jeanne Flore). Le Livre des amours du Chastellain de Coucy et de la dame de Fayel est enrichi de 40 remarquables aquarelles, au trait alerte et humoristique. Ces témoignages iconographiques de première importance pour l'art de la miniature dans le Nord à cette époque sont reproduits dans la présente édition. En outre, l'un des intérêts majeurs de ce texte vient de ce qu'il est bien implanté dans le Nord linguistique, et se déroule dans des lieux familiers aux gens du Nord. Il s'inscrit enfin dans e contexte du mécenat culturel émanant de Philippe Le Bon. Le Livre des amours du Chastellain de Coucy et de la dame de Fayel constitue donc un élément original - et jusqu'ici méconnu - du patrimoine régional

Éléments d'un songe donne les clefs de l'inspiration des poèmes et proses qui suivent (Airs, Paysages avec figures absentes) : il s'agit d'être à l'écoute du divin répandu dans l'herbe. Airs offre une lecture au fil des saisons qui note le battement de la vie. Dans Paysages avec figures absentes on voit le poète passer de l'inscription simplement recueillie à la rage de l'inscription. Insensiblement la page du sensible - si ardemment tenue dans Airs -, est trouée et la rêverie s'échappe dans l'Illimité. Le paysage devient sermon. Leçons et Chants d'en-bas rappellent à l'humilité le rêveur trop confiant dans les mots. L'expérience concrète de la mort qui frappe les proches détruit toute velléité de poursuivre l'alchimie rêveuse qui rendrait le monde à l'ignorant frappé par les cris de l'effraie. Le seul trafic avec l'aérien est un trafic d'homme à homme - et non de l'homme face au monde : faire prendre air à l'homme appelé par le temps à se fondre inexorablement dans le bitume sombre (Les Cormorans). Dernier mot, venu de Pensées sous les nuages : il n'existe nul tisserand dans le monde pour faire naître la merveille, l'artiste est le seul tisserand qui ne peut délivrer qu'un salut de vivant à la vie

La poésie, la vie poétique, ne saurait se confondre avec le métier d'écrivain. Elle fait, en revanche, une place de choix à la métaphysique et, plus encore, à l'amour. On ne s'étonnera donc pas que la figure féminine soit constamment au centre des préoccupations du poète surréaliste. Une figure qui n'appartient pas davantage au réel qu'à l'imaginaire, et mérite, de ce fait, la qualification de magique-circonstancielle. Une figure qui, de surcroît, se dérobe autant qu'elle s'offre, objet d'une jouissance mélancolique et répondant à la condition de cette beauté érotique-voilée qu'on reconnaît aisément dans la Mariée de Marcel Duchamp. Ce qu'on appelle ici l'Invention de la Poésie ne revendique pas le statut d'un événement historique inscrit dans l'évolution de la littérature. Pas plus que la poésie ne veut être confondue avec ce genre littéraire que le mètre et la rime suffisent à distinguer de la prose. I get done what he wants done and I take the heat instead of him."Richard Ellis explores the widely discussed but poorly understood phenomenon of presidential "lightning rods"cabinet officials who "take the heat" instead of their bosses. Whether by intent or circumstance, these officials divert criticism and blame away from their presidents. The phenomenon is so common that it's assumed to be an essential item in every president's managerial toolbox. But, Ellis argues, such assumptions can oversimplify our understanding of this tool.Ellis advises against indiscriminate use of the lightning rod metaphor. Such labeling can hide as much as it reveals about presidential administration and policymaking at the cabinet level. The metaphor often misleads by suggesting strategic intent on the president's part while obscuring the calculations and objectives of presidential adversaries and the lightning rods themselves.Ellis also illuminates the opportunities and difficulties that various presidential postsespecially secretaries of state, chiefs of staff, and vice presidentshave offered for deflecting blame from our presidents. His study offers numerous detailed and instructive examples from the administrations of Truman (Dean Acheson); Eisenhower (Richard Nixon, John Foster Dulles, Herbert Brownell, and Ezra Taft Benson); LBJ (Hubert Humphrey); Ford (Henry Kissinger); and Reagan (James Watt).These examples, Ellis suggests, should guide our understanding of the relationship between lightning rods and presidential leadership, policymaking, and ratings. Blame avoidance, he warns, does have its limitations and may even backfire at times. Nevertheless, President Clinton and his successors may need to rely on such tools. The presidency, Ellis points out, finds itself the object of increasingly intense partisan debate and microscopic scrutiny by a wary press. Lightning rods can deflect such heat and help the president test policies, gauge public opinion, and protect his political power and public image. Ellis's book is an essential primer for helping us understand this process

    Abstract: Andrew Ford here addresses, in a manner both engaging and richly informed, the perennial questions of what poetry is, how it came to be, and what it is for. Focusing on the critical moment in Western literature when the heroic tales of the Greek oral tradition began to be preserved in writing, he examines these questions in the light of Homeric poetry. Through fresh readings of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and referring to other early epics as well, Ford deepens our understanding of what poetry was at a time before written texts, before a developed sense of authorship, and before the existence of institutionalized criticism. Placing what is known about Homer's art in the wider context of Homer's world, Ford traces the effects of the oral tradition upon the development of the epic and addresses such issues as the sources of the poet's inspiration and the generic constraints upon epic composition. After exploring Homer's poetic vocabulary and his fictional and mythical representations of the art of singing, Ford reconstructs an idea of poetry much different from that put forth by previous interpreters. She focuses on two Midwestern communities-Riverton, Wisconsin and Prairie Hills, Iowa-where more than 80 families have supplemented their incomes since 1986 as homebased contractors of small auto parts for The Middle Company, a Fortune 500 manufacturer and subcontractor of General Motors.Gringeri looks at rural development from the perspective of local and state officials as well as that of the workers.
