Kurzfassung: "Based on dozens of intensive interviews with people living in France who trace their origins to non-European countries, Foreigners in Their Own Country reports on the experience of being seen as different from those who are considered unquestionably "French" because of one's physical appearance. Paying close attention to how people speak about themselves and their acceptance and rejection by others, this book provides an intimate account of the challenges faced by the millions of people in France-and throughout Western Europe-who fully participate in the life of their country but are often not seen as belonging there"--

Kurzfassung: In an increasingly digital world, the significance of cyber security for individuals, businesses, and governments has never been greater. Rising cyber attacks are challenging current defence and operational capabilities, highlighting a critical shortage of skilled cyber security professionals. This report delves into the demand for cyber security expertise by analysing online job postings in France, Germany and Poland in between 2018 and 2023. It examines trends in the demand for cyber security professionals, the geographical distribution of job opportunities, and the changing skill requirements in this field. Focusing on France, the report also explores cyber security education and training programmes, the characteristics of the programmes, the demographics of enrolled learners, and their outcomes. Additionally, it reviews French policies and initiatives aimed at broadening the cyber security workforce and enhancing educational opportunities in this field. This comprehensive analysis is part of a larger effort to understand the evolving landscape of cyber security policies and professional experiences worldwide.

Kurzfassung: In many countries, public expenditure, including transfers, plays a major role in reducing income inequality. The report reviews the various ways that budgeting can be used to this end. A first includes taking a broad approach to results-based budgeting, taking social and distributional goals into consideration. A second relies on integrating distributional impact analysis directly into the budget process. The report discusses the concrete experience of eight OECD countries in this area, analysing how they are integrating distributional impact assessment in spending and budgeting decisions. Finally, it discusses the tools, frameworks and data that are needed to take distributional considerations into account as part of evidence-informed policy making.

Kurzfassung: "Subjects and Sojourners explores how French colonial rule in Indochina extended Indochina's colonial society into France. Perhaps two hundred thousand Indochinese sojourned in France between conquest in the 1850s and decolonization a century later. They came from all parts of colonial society, from ruling monarchs to the most marginal laborers. In France, they studied, labored, fought, and lived in contexts that, although still within the empire, remained profoundly different from their places of origin. Their French sojourns were socially, culturally, and politically transformative. And when these sojourners returned to Indochina, virtually all parts of colonial society bore traces of their experiences abroad. Subjects and Sojourners shows, in short, that Indochina did not simply receive and refashion 'France' in the colony: they went and lived it for themselves"--
Kurzfassung: During the era of French colonial rule in Indochina, as many as two hundred thousand Indochinese sojourned in France. Subjects and Sojourners is a vivid and comprehensive social, cultural, and political history of this diverse group, which ranged from ruling monarchs to the most marginal laborers. Drawing from a range of rich but underused archives, Charles Keith explores how French colonialism extended Indochina s colonial society into France, where Indochinese subjects studied, labored, fought, and lived in imperial spaces and contexts that were profoundly different from those they had left behind. Time in France transformed these sojourners, and when they returned to Indochina, they in turn transformed colonial society. Indochinese, in short, did not simply encounter France in the colony: they went and lived it for themselves

Kurzfassung: Media and communication have become ubiquitous in today's societies and affect all aspects of life. On an individual level, they impact how we learn about the world, how we entertain ourselves, and how we interact with others. On an organisational level, the interactions between media and organisations, such as political parties, NGOs, businesses and brands, shape organisations' reputation, legitimacy, trust and (financial) performance, as well as individuals' consumer, political, social and health behaviours. At the societal level, media and communication are crucial for shaping public opinion on current issues such as climate change, sustainability, diversity, and well-being. Media challenges are widespread and include mis- and disinformation, the negative impact of algorithms on our information diets, challenges to our privacy, cyberbullying, media addiction, and unwanted persuasion, among many others. All this makes the study of media and communication crucial. This book provides a broad overview of the ways in which people create, use, and experience their media environment, and the role of media and communication for individuals, organisations, and society. The chapters in the book were written by researchers from the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. ASCoR is today the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and has developed over the past 25 years into one of the best communications research institutes in the world.

Kurzfassung: This open access book explores the deep connections between environment, language, and cultural integrity, with a focus on Indigenous peoples from early modern times to the present. It illustrates the close integration of nature and culture through historical processes of environmental change in North, Central, and South America and the nurturing of local knowledge through ancestral languages and oral traditions. This volume fills a unique space by bringing together the issues of environment, language and cultural integrity in Latin American historical and cultural spheres. It explores the reciprocal and necessary relations between language/culture and environment; how they can lead to sustainable practices; how environmental knowledge and sustainable practices toward the environment are reflected in local languages, local sources and local socio-cultural practices. The book combines interdisciplinary methods and initiates a dialogue among scientifically trained scholars and local communities to compare their perspectives on well-being in remote and recent historical periods and it will be of interest to students and scholars in fields including sociolinguistics, (ethno)history, linguistic anthropology, cultural studies and cultural anthropology, environmental studies and Indigenous/minority studies. Justyna Olko is Professor in the Faculty of “Artes Liberales” at the University of Warsaw, Poland and director of its Center for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity. She specializes in Indigenous history, sociolinguistics, contact linguistics, language endangerment and revitalization of ethnic minority and Indigenous languages, multilingualism as well as decolonizing research practices. Cynthia Radding is Gussenhoven Distinguished Professor of History and Latin American Studies at The University of North Carolina, USA. She researches the imperial borderlands of the Ibero-American empires, emphasizing the role of indigenous peoples and other colonized groups in shaping those borderlands, transforming their landscapes, and producing colonial societies.

Kurzfassung: This book explores the development of the gas industry within Latin Europe (France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain). Through charting the growth of this industry during the 19th and 20th centuries, the technology and public policies used are examined to highlight the long term impact of the industry. Utilising a comparative analysis, similarities and variation between the development of gas within the Latin European countries is compared and contrasted with the aid of specific case studies. This book aims to place the development of gas resources in Latin Europe within a global perspective that takes into account the development of energy resources in the rest of Europe and the world more generally. It will be of interest to students and researchers working within energy economics and economic history. Jesús Mirás-Araujo is Professor of Economic History at the University of A Coruña. Andrea Giuntini is Associate Professor of Economic History at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The book forms part of the results of the research project ‘Gas in Latin Europe: a comparative and global perspective (1818-1945)’, financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Spanish Government and ERDP Funds.

Kurzfassung: This book traces the development of U.S-led global nuclear non-proliferation diplomacy during the three decades since the Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” in 1953. The U.S. non-proliferation efforts had diverse obstacles. It had to prevent nuclear states’ export of nuclear technology while dissuading non-nuclear states from developing nuclear weapons. In addition, building non-proliferation regime was not always its top foreign policy priority. To understand the complex process of non-proliferation, the book examines the relations among three different actors in the nuclear field: a global non-proliferation regime builder (U.S.), a potential nuclear proliferator (France) and a would-be nuclear state (Republic of Korea). In tracing how they developed nuclear strategies, conflicting and compromising with one another, the book pays special attention to how the transforming Cold War structure in the 1970s not only affected foreign policies of the involved countries but also complicated their relationship. The exploration ultimately highlights the multidimensional nature of international discussion on nuclear non-proliferation as the ROK’s nuclear development attempts, U.S. non-proliferation efforts, and the U.S.-France nuclear technology cooperation in the 1970s were all deeply connected. .

Kurzfassung: "Custom was fundamental to medieval legal practice. Whether in a property dispute or a trial for murder, the aggrieved and accused would go to lay court where cases were resolved according to custom. What custom meant, however, went through a radical shift in the medieval period. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, custom went from being a largely oral and performed practice to one that was also conceptualized in writing. Based on French lawbooks known as coutumiers, Ada Maria Kuskowski traces the repercussions this transformation - in the form of custom from unwritten to written and in the language of law from elite Latin to common vernacular - had on the cultural world of law. Vernacular Law offers a new understanding of the formation of a new field of knowledge: authors combined ideas, experience and critical thought to write lawbooks that made disparate customs into the field known as customary law"--

Kurzfassung: This brief maps the available data augmented by expert interviews on the impact of the Covid-19 measures on DV in eight European Member States during the first lock-down. The volume addresses an on-going situation, additionally complicated by renewed lockdown restrictions during autumn and early winter 2020. It assesses the assumptions of an imminent wave of domestic violence against reliable data from crime statistics, surveys, and various institutions responding to domestic violence. Collecting partner country reports from Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Portugal, Scotland and Slovenia, it demonstrates the effects that lockdown measures starting March 2020 had on reported DV incidents. It considers the differences between each country with respect to policing, legal systems, social and cultural factors and highlights best practices to prevent conditions resulting from Covid-19 lockdown undermining victims’ security and frontline responders’ capacities to provide services and prevent domestic violence.

Kurzfassung: The Ecosystem Mindset takes a hard look at the emerging Ecosystem Economy, and what it means for companies once siloed by sector. It explores how and why we got here, beginning with the foundations of the sector-centered economy and bringing us up to today--the earliest chapter in the ecosystem economy's history. Readers will see that the truly successful companies are not the ones that have brought old-school best practices to bear on the new economy, but the companies that have thrown out those best practices altogether--the companies that have adopted entirely new mindsets and strategies for this entirely new game. The authors then explain why adopting a new playbook is so important. They show that ecosystems players stand to partake in more than $60 trillion of new value, and they will also show that this new economy ecosystem is here to stay. In fact, they explore how the ecosystem economy might continue to evolve, dissolving traditional industry barriers once and for all and giving way to an entirely new playing field where sector-system strategies will become entirely untenable. Finally, they introduce an ecosystem playbook--the philosophies and strategies that enterprises will need to adopt in order to survive and thrive in this future. As the barriers between industries come down, we are all going to need to reshape our thinking about competition, partnership, value, and process. This book engages the reader to consider a new playbook for doing business in a world of digital ecosystems --

The preliminary chapters will cover how the world of work is rapidly transforming and why culture in hybrid work matters more than ever before. It will then take the readers on an in-depth journey through a four-pillar framework which details what leaders should do to hire, lead and retain a world-class team in a hybrid world. The first pillar describes how to create a unified hybrid leadership team in hybrid work, the second explains how to build extreme clarity and transparency, the third discusses how to over communicate through all channels, and the fourth pillar covers how to unify cross cultural remote teams through cultural awareness. The book will also do a deep dive into topics such as why readers should leverage meetings in a certain way in a hybrid work model, as well as what the most common pitfalls are when it comes to managing teams in hybrid work and how to overcome them. The author will include useful tips and resources throughout the book and a practical checklist supplementing the four-pillar framework"--

Kurzfassung: Interested in giving Microsoft’s new Multi-platform App UI (MAUI) a try? This book provides developers with a comprehensive set of tools and hands-on coding to build their own cross-platform applications. The book is a comprehensive end-to-end guide on creating, building, and distributing .NET MAUI applications. As you walk through each new concept, .NET MAUI expert and Microsoft MVP Shaun Lawrence will show the concept's value and uses, and then have you apply it in a build-along application. You will work with this build-along application right up until you are ready to ship it to the relevant stores (e.g., App Store, etc.). The underlying theme through the book is to explain a key concept, show how to implement it directly in order to reinforce your understanding, and then show potential simplifications (e.g., alternative libraries) that can help you reduce the complexities of an applications code base.

Kurzfassung: "Traditionally, control in organizations is concerned with top-down approaches, where executives attempt to direct their employees' attention, behaviors, and performance to align with the organization's goals and objectives. This book takes a new approach by turning the problem of control upside down as it focuses on control of executives who find white-collar crime convenient. The bottom-up approach to executive compliance focuses on organizational measures to make white-collar crime less convenient for potential offenders. Rather than focusing on the regulatory formalities and staged procedures of compliance and audits, the book emphasises the organisational challenges involved in compliance work when trusted corporate officials exhibit deviant behavior, refining and advancing knowledge in this field by reference to contemporary international case-studies and associated original evaluative research. The themes and cases covered are carefully selected to provide the reader with an insight into professional conduct and procedural practice - the organisation of corporate compliance success, failure and corruption - with the theory of convenience placed at the fore. It is the bottom-up approach by application of convenience theory that makes the proposed book unique compared to other books on corporate compliance. This book is a valuable resource for scholars and upper-level students researching and studying in the areas of business administration, organizational behavior, corporate and white-collar crime, as well as business ethics and auditing"--

Kurzfassung: Completely updated for this exciting third edition, Beginning Ubuntu for Windows and Mac Users will help you start your journey into Free and Open Source Software with Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS with GNOME 42. This book is a friendly guide to installing and running Ubuntu for people who are already efficient and happy with Windows or macOS computers. It teachers new Ubuntu users how to navigate their new operating system, perform basic tasks and suggests specific applications to handle routine tasks. You'll start by installing Ubuntu and its related “flavors” (Kubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, etc.) and how they differ from each other. The rest of the book breaks down application suggestions by broad categories to fill in gaps in the default installed system, or suggest fun things that the reader might not have even thought of. The command line is handled after you are comfortable with the system and ready for something interesting but different. It's presented as a powerful interface that can either be approached casually as a unique method of interacting with the computer, as an occasional tool to use, or as a fun way to get in touch with an early way of using a computer. A brief look at “power user” topics gives advice on managing running processes, installing alternate desktop software, using virtual desktops and creating virtual machines. It’s a great way to round off the book with starting points for advanced topics that are more specialty topics. An appendix describes the Ubuntu release schedule, naming, and timing. The book is designed to function as a “travel guide” to Ubuntu, offering both a scenic tour through some of the great software in Ubuntu in a practical “here’s what you can do with this” style as well as a comprehensive reference guide that the reader can return to over and over to learn how to accomplish specific tasks.

Kurzfassung: Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is gaining popularity and developers today are deploying their application environments through IaC tools to the cloud. However, it can become extremely difficult and time-consuming to manage the state of the infrastructure that has been deployed. This book will provide a complete walkthrough of deploying a SpringBoot application on AWS with multiple environments like production, staging and development. Everything is orchestrated through GitHub Actions and executed through Terraform Cloud to monitor changes in your infrastructure and manage its state. You'll start by reviewing how your infrastructure can be stored in code by spinning up an EC2 server first through the console, then AWS CLI and then using Terraform. You'll then be presented with a practical scenario of setting up a simple EC2 server in a multi-environment (production, staging and development) using GitHub Actions and Terraform Cloud. In the advanced section that follows, this simple EC2 server is expanded into an application that is deployed on an AWS EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) using AWS RDS (Relational Database Service) exposed through an AWS ALB (Application Load Balancer) protected using AWS ACM (AWS Certificate Manager), and accessible by setting the AWS Route53. The book then builds up on this infrastructure and demonstrates how it can be deployed in a multi-environment scenario by implementing accounts through AWS organizations. You'll see how to put in restrictions through Service Control Policies, how to protect secrets using AWS Secrets Manager, and how to work with least privileges using IRSA (IAM Roles for Service Accounts). Finally, you'll make the infrastructure more observable using Graphana, Prometheus, and AWS OpenSearch, run security tools, host Route53 zones dynamically based on environments, and implement CloudWatch Alarms for various use cases.

Kurzfassung: Discover the benefits of running Oracle databases in Linux containers. This book approaches containers from the perspective of database administrators, developers, and systems administrators. It explains the differences between containers and virtual machines and describes why containers deliver greater speed, flexibility, and portability, with lower resource requirements. You’ll learn how running Oracle databases in containers complements existing database infrastructure and accelerates development, and you’ll understand the advantages they offer for test and validation environments. This book teaches you how to begin working with Oracle databases in Docker, covering the steps for preparing and installing software on Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. It describes the steps for deploying Oracle databases, separating data and configurations from database software, and networking and communicating with your containers. It introduces the Docker commands you’ll use for managing containers, including tips and shortcuts to make everyday tasks easier. Other books may overlook these topics and approach containers as disposable commodities in serverless environments or convenient coding platforms. You’ll gain battle-tested insights for customizing and extending your containers to meet different needs. The opening chapters concentrate on the practical steps of running Oracle databases in Docker. Once you’re comfortable with container terminology and methods, you’ll look deeper at the real power behind containers—preparing and building images, and the templates that form the foundation beneath every container. You’ll begin by modifying publicly available image manifests, or Dockerfiles, following multiple examples that add functionality and capabilities to your databases. You’ll discover methods for using run-time options to create flexible and extensible images that adapt to real-world requirements. Within the pages, you’ll see how Oracle and Docker empower you to confidently build and deploy systems. It’s written with databases and database users in mind and delivers practical advice based on the author’s real-world, battle-tested experiences deploying and running Oracle databases in containers since 2014. With Oracle databases in containers, database administrators have the ideal platform for evaluating performance, practicing database upgrades and migrations, validating backup and recovery processes, and hardening environments. Developers will find that the marriage of Oracle and Docker simplifies code and application tests. Docker’s unique ability to isolate data artifacts improves reliability and confidence in test and QA processes. If you’re a database administrator, this book will help you join the container revolution sweeping the industry and making IT professionals more productive than ever!

Kurzfassung: Make designing and developing accessible websites fun and straightforward by deciphering information that is often confusing. This book examines how web professionals can ensure a website is as accessible as it can be, meeting the needs of its audience. The main focus is on web accessibility and, WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 guidelines: what they are, who they are for, and what can be done from a design point of view to make the lives of the users easier. In reviewing the fundamentals, emphasis will be given on what disabilities could potentially prevent users from getting the information they need and what can be done to help them. This is achieved by breaking down web design and development terms and practices, such as web accessibility, color contrast, typography, how to design specific components like carousels, forms, and so on. Each chapter features design examples presented in a clear and concise manner. Each design element is divided into different components, highlighting exactly what helps with what, showing how a website needs to be designed for the benefit of its people. A11Y Unraveled also reviews the current laws and legislations that govern web accessibility in different parts of the world.

Kurzfassung: Global surveys from McKinsey, BCG, Gartner, and others show that less than 30% of digital transformation programs succeed in their missions to improve a company's performance and employee productivity. This is due to the fact that IT efforts within the company do not center around the employee. This book will provide concrete steps to allow both IT professionals and business leaders to transform the way they deliver IT to employees - with the employee (the human) centered in their transformation. The concepts, models, checklists, and playbook you'll review are based on the author's many years of experience, lessons learned, and proven outcomes. IT organizations want to improve their employee experience but don't know how and this is the "must have" book for those who don't know where to start. More than two-thirds of today's jobs require good digital and IT skills from employees. The expectations of management, who invest in these big digital transformations, is that the employees will become more productive, effective and help the bottom line. However, this can only happen through active and proactive change of IT operations and transformations that center the employee, rather than technology or senior management. This book reveals the benefit of moving towards an approach where employees gain technology aptitude, are up for technology change, and are willing to learn more for their benefit and even provide feedback on ways to improve these tools, trainings and support. You'll see how employee engagement and experience research, concepts, and implementations are growing rapidly across many organizations and taking a key role in their global strategies. Employee-centric IT will transform employees to own their digital literacy and development, and this in turn reduces or even eliminates the shadow IT need and allows the organization to drive and implement successful digital transformation.

Kurzfassung: ". The book takes its title from a simple insight: we would never run a machine at such a pace, duration, and rhythm such that it broke all of the time?so why do we do exact that to our human workers? The reality is, this model doesn?t work for anyone. Organizations have dumped millions into consulting from folks like myself, with incremental results; workers have raged from picket lines to Reddit with stop-and-start progress at best. By assuming the interests of these two groups are not at cross purposes ? and being willing to aim the analytical laser in some unexpected places ? You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way provides a roadmap to better work that generates wins for organizations and employees alike. You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way explores an array of ways we?ve made work downright inhuman - in a way that, ironically, actually stifles the growth and profitability of organizations. Foundational practices we take for granted ? for instance, trying to improve the performance of the individual human being - actually produce worse results than doing nothing at all. And, similar to the old joke about teaching a pig to dance being both a waste of your time and an annoyance for the pig, these efforts both waste corporate money and time and ? critically - drive human workers to exhaustion, burnout, and even death. To build a better model of work, You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way argues, we have to look in some unexpected places. Your people strategy? It?s being built by geopolitics and local jurisprudence, not your HR team; immigration, migration, and incarceration have a seismic impact on workforces that companies serially underestimate"--

Kurzfassung: Every day, successful software projects scale and sustain businesses of all sizes and across all industries. Unfortunately, the reality is that many software projects still fail. The reasons behind these failures are seldom due to the underlying technology. Misunderstandings and communication barriers lead to wrong decisions, missed opportunities, communication breakdowns, or worse--huge economic loss. In this digitally connected world, business professionals can't afford to be hands-off on technical projects, but they also can't be expected to have technical certifications. They have first-hand knowledge of the business processes, are subject matter experts in software requirements, and they finance the projects. Even C-level management or board members need to rapidly gain just enough understanding of technology to make mission-critical decisions for businesses to survive and flourish. In most software projects the number of non-technical stakeholders far exceeds the number of techies. This book distills the world of software projects into simple terms and relatable metaphors for even the most technically adverse reader. Real-life examples, entertaining analogies, and hand-drawn illustrations will stick with readers throughout their own software projects, bolstering their success. Business requirements, use cases, process flows--the list goes on. It's all broken down in this game-changing book aimed at delivering for business and tech teams what DevOps has done for developers and operations.

VP recently analyzed the data they've been collecting on over 10,000 sellers and greater than 1,600 sales managers. What became glaringly obvious is that salespeople who could leverage all of their previous methodology trainings to determine the best approach are the ones who accomplish their growth targets. Kurzfassung: "Although progress has been made around equality for marginalized groups defined by race, gender, sexual orientation and others - most organizations' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts do not include people with disabilities. Although 90% of organizations claim to prioritize diversity, only 4% consider disability in DE&I initiatives. Yet people with disabilities make up 15% of the population - about 1 billion people worldwide. They are all too often overlooked. Disability friendly starts with the roadblocks able people have to understanding and engaging people with disabilities, and how to get over the initial discomfort many able people have. It goes on to explain how businesses, schools, government, churches, and other organizations can open up to the contributions and talents of people with disabilities and create a culture of inclusion and reasonable accommodation. It explains the leader's role and how to communicate a vision for change that inspires others. Finally, it explains how to engage, recruit, and hire people with disabilities. This groundbreaking book will open the world's eyes to the overlooked potential of people with disabilities"--

Kurzfassung: "In Reimagining the Classroom: Creating New Learning Spaces and Connecting with the World, renowned educator Dr. Theodore Richards identifies the flaws and fissures in traditional approaches to teaching and learning, inspiring many to consider radical change. Dr. Richards takes a critical look at our education and reveals how impoverished our lives--and the lives of our children--have become. Our children are the pathway to reimagining our world and we are educating them to think of themselves as mere consumers rather than creators, to beware of the world rather than behold it, to think of themselves as isolated individuals rather than participants in communities and in the broader web of life. This is done not by telling our children what to think, but through a process of shared inquiry and exploration rooted in a renewed emphasis on our relationship to one another and the planet. The book is divided into two parts. The first offers the intellectual framework educators are seeking; it identifies specific problems with current approaches, offers an alternative vision and set of narratives, and then offers a new pedagogy to satisfy this vision. The second part of the book moves from the theoretical to the practical. Dr. Richards offers specific practices, activities, and ideas drawn from his decades of experience teaching children through the organization he founded, Wisdom Projects, Inc. Individual chapters address science and math; literature and fine arts; spirituality and mindfulness; practical arts; and justice and social-emotional learning. In each, Dr. Richards provides specific curricular examples--but more importantly, provides the steps and processes educators can use to create their own lessons"--

Kurzfassung: "The Peace Index provides a framework to help people find sustained balance in their lives. It is comprised of five parts: purpose, people, place, personal health, and provision. Each part informs a person's overall wellbeing and happiness. To calculate your peace index, you assign a number between 1-100 to each part. For example, if you assign your purpose a 70, that indicates you need to rediscover what drives your life. If you assign people a 95, you're deeply fulfilled by the people in your life. Your peace index score is the total of all 5 parts divided by 5. Completing this exercise helps you easily identify the parts of your life that are strong and the parts that need work. The Peace Index will be structured around these five parts and expound on each component to guide you towards more equilibrium in your life"--
