    Abstract: "Seit etwa 150 Jahren gibt es die Religionsgemeinschaft Jehovas Zeugen in Europa. Ihr Weg in den einzelnen Ländern war auch davon abhängig, wie diese missionierende Gemeinschaft von der Mehrheit der Andersgläubigen, der Staatsmacht und den etablierten Kirchen behandelt wurde. Insofern ist die Geschichte von Jehovas Zeugen in Europa auch eine Geschichte über die gesellschaftliche Verfasstheit dieser Länder - deren Bereitschaft, religiöse Minderheiten zu akzeptieren und zu integrieren. Nicht nur in Diktaturen, sondern auch in manchen demokratischen Staaten erlebten Jehovas Zeugen Unterdrückung und Verfolgung, in anderen konnten sie sich relativ frei entfalten. Wie sich die unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse auf die Religionsgemeinschaft in der jeweiligen nationalen Gesellschaft auswirkten und welche Herausforderungen - zum Teil bis in die Gegenwart - Jehovas Zeugen zu bestehen hatten und noch haben, ist das Thema dieser auf drei Bände angelegten Studie."

    Abstract: Quality improvement initiatives take many forms, from the creation of standards for health professionals, health technologies and health facilities, to audit and feedback, and from fostering a patient safety culture to public reporting and paying for quality. For policymakers who struggle to decide which initiatives to prioritise for investment, understanding the potential of different quality strategies in their unique settings is key. This volume, developed by the Observatory together with OECD, provides an overall conceptual framework for understanding and applying strategies aimed at improving quality of care. Crucially, it summarizes available evidence on different quality strategies and provides recommendations for their implementation. This book is intended to help policy-makers to understand concepts of quality and to support them to evaluate single strategies and combinations of strategies. Quality of care is a political priority and an important contributor to population health. This book acknowledges that "quality of care" is a broadly defined concept, and that it is often unclear how quality improvement strategies fit within a health system, and what their particular contribution can be. This volume elucidates the concepts behind multiple elements of quality in healthcare policy (including definitions of quality, its dimensions, related activities, and targets), quality measurement and governance and situates it all in the wider context of health systems research. By so doing, this book is designed to help policy-makers prioritize and align different quality initiatives and to achieve a comprehensive approach to quality improvement.

    Abstract: Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway and Finland have been consistently the most favourable to immigration while eastern European countries such as the Czech Republic and Hungary have been the least favourable. Despite their relatively high average levels of support for immigration, however, many countries of western and northern Europe are quite strongly polarized internally along educational and age lines. This can perhaps explain why political divisions over immigration can be so salient in these countries. Comparing results from 2002/03 and 2016/07, one finds that European attitudes were on average quite stable. However, a number of countries became more generous while several others became more negative. On the issue of government policy towards refugees, there was a marked shift in a negative direction after the 2015/16 refugee crisis. Countries such as Austria, Germany, and Sweden which had experienced large inflows of refugees showed particularly large declines in public support for generous government policy towards asylum requests.

    Abstract: After the overwhelming horrors of the first half of the 20th century, described by Ian Kershaw in his previous book as having gone 'to Hell and back', the years from 1950 to 2017 brought peace and relative prosperity to most of Europe. Enormous economic improvements transformed the continent. The catastrophic era of the world wars receded into an ever more distant past, though its long shadow continued to shape mentalities. Europe was now a divided continent, living under the nuclear threat in a period intermittently fraught with anxiety. Europeans experienced a 'roller-coaster ride', both in the sense that they were flung through a series of events which threatened disaster, but also in that they were no longer in charge of their own destinies: for much of the period the USA and USSR effectively reduced Europeans to helpless figures whose fates were dictated to them by the Cold War. There were striking successes - the Soviet bloc melted away, dictatorships vanished and Germany was successfully reunited. But accelerating globalization brought new fragilities. The impact of interlocking crises after 2008 was the clearest warning to Europeans that there was no guarantee of peace and stability. In this remarkable book, Ian Kershaw has created a grand panorama of the world we live in and where it came from. Drawing on examples from all across the continent, Roller-Coaster will make us all rethink Europe and what it means to be European.

    Abstract: This volume on 'Minority Self-government in Europe and the Middle East: From Theory to Practice' is novel from several perspectives. It combines theory with facts on the ground, going beyond legal perspectives without neglecting existing laws and their implementation. Theoretical discussions transcend examining existing autonomy models in certain regions. It offers new models in the field, discussing such critical themes as environmentalism. Traditional concepts such as self-determination and, well-known successful autonomy examples, including the Aland Islands, Basque and Catalonian models, are examined from different perspectives.     Abstract: Since the 1970s, there have been three challenges to traditional, homogeneous 'national' identities across the Western world: political and socioeconomic inequality; neoliberal globalisation; and more diverse, multicultural societies. As in the US and elsewhere in Western Europe, the decline of an old, masculinised national identity has now begun to open a new, dark era for Britain. Ever since the 'war on terror' was added to the mix, 'others' in Britain have been brutally demonised. Muslims, routinely presented as the source of society`s ills, are subjected to both symbolic and actual violence. Deep-seated and structurally racialised norms amplify the isolation and alienation impeding Muslim integration. Both these 'left-behind' Muslims and white-British groups who perceive themselves as the true nation are under pressure from ongoing geopolitical concerns in the Muslim world, as well as widening divisions at home. Tahir Abbas argues that, in this context, the symbiotic intersections between Islamophobia and radicalisation intensify and expand. His book is a warning of the world that results: a rise in hate crime, the institutionalisation of Islamophobia, and the normalisation of war and conflict.

    Abstract: Martina Schöfbeck befasst sich mit den Ursachen der Entstehung von Integrationsskepsis in Parteien innerhalb von Transformationsländern.     Abstract: In which chronological, spatial, and social contexts is gender a relevant social category that is noticeable in the archaeological material? How can transformations in social gender relations and identity be recognized archaeologically? Is the identity of prehistoric people defined by gender? If so, what is the accompanying cultural context? What about gender equality among the scientists working in archaeology? In what degree are research teams, as well as their scientific approaches, biased today? These and other burning questions are intensively discussed in this volume, which comprises 25 contributions presented at the international workshop ‘Gender Transformations in Prehistoric and Archaic Societies’, organised by the Collaborative Research Centre 1266 of Kiel University funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The workshop offered a platform to discuss a broad range of approaches on the inter-dependencies between gender relations and socio-environmental transformation processes. Beyond a focus on the archaeology of women, gender archaeology offers a variety of possibilities to reconstruct the contribution of social groups differentiated e.g. by age, gender, and activities related to cultural transformation, based on the archaeological material. Thus, this volume includes papers dealing with different socio-economic units, from south-western Europe to Central Asia, between 15,000 and 1 BCE, paying particular attention to the scale of social reach. Since gender archaeology, and in particular feminist archaeology, also addresses the issue of scientific objectivity or bias, parts of this volume are dedicated to equal opportunity matters in archaeological academia across the globe. This is realised by bringing together feminist and female experiences from a range of countries, each with its own specific individual, cultural, and social perspectives and traditions. The papers are organised along three central topics: ‘Gendering fieldwork’, ‘Tracing gender transformations’, and ‘Gendering and shaping the environment’. By gendering the archaeological discussion on transformation processes, the contributions aim to more firmly embed gender-sensitive research in the archaeological agenda, not just in Europe, but world-wide

    Abstract: For a decade now, borders in Europe have been back on the political agenda. Border research has responded and is breaking new ground in thinking about and exploring borders. This book follows this development and strengthens a perspective that is interested in life realities and that focuses on everyday cultural experiences of borders. The authors reconstruct such experiences in the context of different forms of migration and mobility as well as language contact situations and are sensitive to the freedom of the participants.     Abstract: "The last few years have witnessed a remarkable resurgence of populist nationalism as indicated by Brexit, the Trump presidency and the rise of radical parties of the far right. Nationalist Responses to the Crises in Europe examines the drivers, methods and local appeal of populist nationalism. Based on multi-sited fieldwork in England, Hungary and Norway, Cathrine Thorleifsson explores the various material conditions, historical events and social contexts that shape distinct forms of xenophobia and intolerance toward migrants and minorities.     Abstract: Tanja Wolf entwickelt eine Typologie zur Unterscheidung rechtsextremer und rechtspopulistischer Parteien in Europa. Diese basiert auf einer systematischen Herleitung der Unterscheidungsmerkmale. Hierfür werden nicht nur die gängigsten Definitionen extremer Parteienformen beleuchtet, sondern auch verschiedene Theorien und die zentralen Charakteristika der beiden Parteitypen. Die bereits existierenden Definitionen werden anhand dieser Charakteristika und grundlegender Wissenschaftstheorie weiterentwickelt, um aus ihnen adäquate Unterscheidungskriterien ableiten zu können. Dazu wird die historische Entwicklung der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit in Deutschland und Europa in Länderberichten nachgezeichnet; Querschnittsanalysen sowie Beiträge zum Rechtsschutz auf europäischer und internationaler Ebene eröffnen eine übergreifende Perspektive. Erstmals analysiert das Handbuch dabei systematisch alle in Deutschland eingeführten Systeme der Verwaltungsgerichtsbarkeit, von Baden (1864) bis Bremen (1924). Vorangestellt sind Beiträge zu den Formen der Verwaltungskontrolle auf Reichsebene einschließlich ihrer Ursprünge sowie die Vorgeschichte in den Ländern. Auch die Besatzungszeit und die Zusammenführung der verschiedenen Traditionen in der Verwaltungsgerichtsordnung werden einschließlich der nachfolgenden Reformetappen ausführlich behandelt. Die Entwicklung des Verwaltungsrechtsschutzes in anderen europäischen Staaten wird bis hin zur Gegenwart ebenfalls in Einzeldarstellungen präsentiert und durch Vergleichs- und Querschnittsanalysen eingeordnet.     Abstract: Die mit 1990 gehegten Hoffnungen auf einen liberalen Frieden haben sich nicht erfüllt.     Abstract: In this book, the author introduces belonging from a sociolinguistic perspective as a concept that is accomplished in interaction. Belonging can be expressed linguistically in social, spatial and temporal categories – indexing rootedness, groupness and cohesion. It can also be captured through shared linguistic practices within a group, e.g. collectively shared narrative practices. Using conversation analysis and an analysis of narrative as practice bolstered with ethnographic knowledge, the author shows how belonging is tied to locally contextualized use of deictics and to collectively shared narrations of the past in a Guatemalan community. The book examines the understudied phenomenon of belonging at the intersection of pragmatics and linguistic anthropology.

    Abstract: Par constitution, il est convenu d’entendre un texte établissant la forme organique de l’État, et de tels textes n’existent pas avant le xviiie siècle. Peut-on alors parler de « constitutions » pour le Moyen Âge ? Empiriquement, communes et monarchies avaient des constitutions : aucun texte juridique ne les décrivait, mais elles existaient bel et bien et on en discutait pied à pied les dispositions. Dès qu’ils les ont connues, les juristes et les théologiens ont discuté les constitutions analysées par Aristote dans sa Politique. Nul ne doute cependant du caractère constitutionnel de la monarchie parlementaire anglaise, que l’on considère aujourd’hui comme une constitution coutumière. Une définition trop stricte conduirait donc à passer sous silence certaines situations et expériences déterminantes dans la conceptualisation et l’application d’une idée constitutionnelle dans l’Europe des États qui se met en place à partir du xiie siècle. Le choix d’une définition plus large s’impose. Nous avons donc adopté une définition plus large de ce que peut être une « constitution » : un ensemble de normes auquel, indépendamment de sa forme juridique, une société accorde une valeur fondamentale, parce qu’il définit, garantit et règle sa relation au pouvoir et fixe, ce faisant, les conditions d’un échange politique. Sur la base de cette définition, la mise en œuvre de l’idée constitutionnelle a été envisagée depuis les chartes de franchises (des proto-constitutions ?) jusqu’aux constitutions modernes, en passant par les législations produites par les États. On trouvera ici des études portant sur des textes ayant joué un rôle historique considérable : certains sont célèbres (la Grande Charte de 1215, la Bulle d’Or hongroise et celle de l’Empire), d’autres le sont moins (les tracts des Niveleurs), ou ne sont même pas identifiés comme des textes constitutionnels (les chartes gasconnes). Sur le fond de ces textes, on trouvera une réflexion théorique, portant sur la constitutionnalité du souverain ou sur celle des régimes politiques, ou encore sur les crises constitutionnelles. Sur leurs formes, très diverses, on trouvera aussi une approche mettant en relation les formes et les conditions sociales et politiques de production de ces textes. Enfin, peu de volumes peuvent prétendre rassembler à la fois des études synthétiques et des études de cas portant sur autant de périodes et de lieux différents

    Abstract: "The political landscape in Europe is currently going through a phase of rapid change. New actors and movements that claim to represent 'the will of the people' are attracting considerable public attention, with dramatic consequences for election outcomes. This volume explores the new political order with a particular focus on discursive constructions of 'the people' and the category of populism across the spectrum. It shows how a unitary representation of 'the people' is a central element in a vast range of very diverse political discourses today, acting to anchor identities and project antagonisms in a multitude of settings. The chapters in this book explore commonality and contrast in representations of 'the people' in both radical and mainstream political movements, looking in depth at recent political discourses in the European sphere. The authors draw on approaches ranging from Essex-style discourse theory over critical discourse studies, corpus analysis and linguistic pragmatics, to investigate how historically situated categories such as the people and populism become fixed through local linguistic, textual and narrative practices as well as through wider ideological and discursive patterns"--
