Abstract:
Free in the Forest, the second volume of this two-volume study, traces the history of these people form 1954 to 1976. Hickery relates that with the Geneva Agreements of 1954 the highlanders found themselves under Vietnamese rule, classified as one of several "ethnic minorities" who would have to be regrouped and resettled in order to become assimilated. Enraged highland leader in retaliation, formed a political movement - the first time that their ethnonationalism had taken this form.By the early 1960s renewed Communist insurgency had ushered in a period of highland militancy against the Communist rebels.
