Abstract: Media and communication have become ubiquitous in today's societies and affect all aspects of life. On an individual level, they impact how we learn about the world, how we entertain ourselves, and how we interact with others. On an organisational level, the interactions between media and organisations, such as political parties, NGOs, businesses and brands, shape organisations' reputation, legitimacy, trust and (financial) performance, as well as individuals' consumer, political, social and health behaviours. At the societal level, media and communication are crucial for shaping public opinion on current issues such as climate change, sustainability, diversity, and well-being. Media challenges are widespread and include mis- and disinformation, the negative impact of algorithms on our information diets, challenges to our privacy, cyberbullying, media addiction, and unwanted persuasion, among many others. All this makes the study of media and communication crucial. This book provides a broad overview of the ways in which people create, use, and experience their media environment, and the role of media and communication for individuals, organisations, and society. The chapters in the book were written by researchers from the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. ASCoR is today the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and has developed over the past 25 years into one of the best communications research institutes in the world.

Abstract: This open access book explores the deep connections between environment, language, and cultural integrity, with a focus on Indigenous peoples from early modern times to the present. It illustrates the close integration of nature and culture through historical processes of environmental change in North, Central, and South America and the nurturing of local knowledge through ancestral languages and oral traditions. This volume fills a unique space by bringing together the issues of environment, language and cultural integrity in Latin American historical and cultural spheres. It explores the reciprocal and necessary relations between language/culture and environment; how they can lead to sustainable practices; how environmental knowledge and sustainable practices toward the environment are reflected in local languages, local sources and local socio-cultural practices. The book combines interdisciplinary methods and initiates a dialogue among scientifically trained scholars and local communities to compare their perspectives on well-being in remote and recent historical periods and it will be of interest to students and scholars in fields including sociolinguistics, (ethno)history, linguistic anthropology, cultural studies and cultural anthropology, environmental studies and Indigenous/minority studies

Abstract: This book will teach you how to build recommender systems with machine learning algorithms using Python. Recommender systems have become an essential part of every internet-based business today. You'll start by learning basic concepts of recommender systems, with an overview of different types of recommender engines and how they function. Next, you will see how to build recommender systems with traditional algorithms such as market basket analysis and content- and knowledge-based recommender systems with NLP. The authors then demonstrate techniques such as collaborative filtering using matrix factorization and hybrid recommender systems that incorporate both content-based and collaborative filtering techniques. This is followed by a tutorial on building machine learning-based recommender systems using clustering and classification algorithms like K-means and random forest. The last chapters cover NLP, deep learning, and graph-based techniques to build a recommender engine. Each chapter includes data preparation, multiple ways to evaluate and optimize the recommender systems, supporting examples, and illustrations. By the end of this book, you will understand and be able to build recommender systems with various tools and techniques with machine learning, deep learning, and graph-based algorithms. Abstract: "My second-grade teacher noticed. She guided me out of the classroom and into the hall. She gently asked why on earth I was crying over a game of bingo. As only a precocious 8-year-old could, I tried to explain that I hated bingo because it required no skill. It was pure luck. There was no strategy to employ, no natural talent to rely on to win. Either your numbers were called, or they weren't. I couldn't extract value out of a win. There was no meaning to victory-although loss still hurt. My teacher gently explained that it was "just a game" and encouraged me to enjoy it. But that's the thing. There has been nothing in my life that has been "just a game." Every win was a small indication that things would work out, that I'd be okay. Every loss was a devastating reminder that I could lose everything-and probably would."--

Abstract: Build production-grade web apps from scratch without using frameworks with Kotlin on the Java platform. Youll learn how to use and compose libraries, how to choose between different libraries, and the benefits of explicit and straight-forward code, vs. the implicit magic, conventions, and inversion of control you often see in frameworks. The book teaches the Kotlin language by building production-ready Kotlin code. Youll gain a deep understanding of the idiomatic use of the Kotlin language along with knowledge of how to apply Kotlin in production-grade web apps. The book also bridges the gap between building from scratch and using existing frameworks. For example, youll learn how to integrate Spring Security-based authentication in web apps written from scratch, so you can leverage existing tooling in your organization without having to take on the entire Spring framework. The first section of the book sets up the base structure of your web app, such as routing, configuration files, and database migrations. The remaining chapters are broken into individual aspects of building production-ready web apps. Appendices at the end of the book explain how to use different libraries than the ones chosen in the main chapters, so you'll learn how to decouple your code from specific libraries, and choose between many different libraries to get the job done in your own web apps. What You Will Learn Compose libraries and manage boilerplate code using idiomatic and powerful Kotlin Manage and query SQL databases without ORMs and mapping layers Write resilient and change-proof tests in support of test-driven development practices Create traditional, HTML-based web apps, APIs for JavaScript-based single-page web apps and native mobile apps Manage parallelism and external service calls using Kotlin co-routines Deploy to production using embedded servers, WAR files, and serverless approaches Bridge the gap between custom-built apps and enterprise, using Spring Context and Spring Security.

Abstract: ". The book takes its title from a simple insight: we would never run a machine at such a pace, duration, and rhythm such that it broke all of the time?so why do we do exact that to our human workers? The reality is, this model doesn?t work for anyone. Organizations have dumped millions into consulting from folks like myself, with incremental results; workers have raged from picket lines to Reddit with stop-and-start progress at best. By assuming the interests of these two groups are not at cross purposes ? and being willing to aim the analytical laser in some unexpected places ? You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way provides a roadmap to better work that generates wins for organizations and employees alike. You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way explores an array of ways we?ve made work downright inhuman - in a way that, ironically, actually stifles the growth and profitability of organizations. Foundational practices we take for granted ? for instance, trying to improve the performance of the individual human being - actually produce worse results than doing nothing at all. And, similar to the old joke about teaching a pig to dance being both a waste of your time and an annoyance for the pig, these efforts both waste corporate money and time and ? critically - drive human workers to exhaustion, burnout, and even death. To build a better model of work, You Wouldn?t Run a Machine This Way argues, we have to look in some unexpected places. Your people strategy? It?s being built by geopolitics and local jurisprudence, not your HR team; immigration, migration, and incarceration have a seismic impact on workforces that companies serially underestimate"--

Abstract: "Companies know they need to equip their salespeople to compete in today's market, where buying decisions are more complex, differentiation between suppliers is difficult to discern and so much information is available...decision makers struggle to make sense of what they hear from any potential partner. To the buyer, it all sounds like noise. For these reasons, the decades of research VantagePoint Performance has been conducting on high-performing sales managers and high-performing salespeople is more relevant today than it ever has been. VP recently analyzed the data they've been collecting on over 10,000 sellers and greater than 1,600 sales managers. What became glaringly obvious is that salespeople who could leverage all of their previous methodology trainings to determine the best approach are the ones who accomplish their growth targets. That ability to read the buyer, the situation, needs, and instinctively choose the best approach for each deal and situation is Sales Agility"--

Abstract: The Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) can be found in the majority of data centers across the world. However, getting hands-on practice to learn this infrastructure can be difficult, as many companies will push to have it production-ready as soon as possible. Home-labs are also cost-prohibitive, cumbersome, electricity-hungry, and noisy. So, how do you get hands-on experience? With Unified Computing System Platform Emulator (UCSPE) and this book. UCSPE is free and can run on a laptop. Using it along with this book, you will learn how to set up, manage and troubleshoot a UCS, including the fabric interconnects, chassis and IOMs, and servers through the GUI and the CLI. All from the comfort of your own home. Introducing Cisco Unified Computing System will show you how to set up a UCS (comparing the UCSPE to a real-world deployment), customize the hardware, configure the UCS system, and secure it. You'll start by creating an organization and then the policies to control storage, networking, boot options, maintenance policies, and server pools. Once you have the required policies you'll use them to create service profiles (using the policies) and templates and assign these to the blade and rack-mount servers in the virtual environment. You'll also be looking at real-life scenarios such as upgrades (and downgrades), northbound networking, and Storage Area Networking (SAN) connectivity. Using the GUI and the CLI you'll look at real-world examples that data center engineers may encounter. Abstract: "While the original Small Teaching fills the gap in higher education literature between the primary research in cognitive theory and the classroom environment, this book applies the same foundational research to K-8 classrooms. Small Teaching is characterized by evocative storytelling, designed to convey compelling anecdotes across popular culture and individual schools in order to illustrate the issues, challenges, and opportunities presented in educators' classrooms every day. It offers simple interventions that can be integrated into pre-existing techniques as well as clear descriptions of how to do so. The book provides action items for energizing students that intentionally require minimal preparation and grading. The term "small teaching" refers to an approach that seeks to spark positive change in the classroom through small but powerful modifications to course design and teaching practices. A small teaching approach or activity may take one of three forms: brief classroom or online learning activities, one-time interventions in a course, or small modifications in course design or communication with students. Each chapter introduces a basic concept in cognitive research that has implications for classroom teaching, explains the rationale for offering it within a specific time period in a typical class, and then provides concrete examples of how this intervention has been used or could be used by faculty in a variety of disciplines"--

Abstract: Understand the power of dynamic arrays: a single formula can generate new and vastly more efficient spreadsheet possibilities. This book introduces spreadsheet users to dynamic array functions in Microsoft Excel 365, defines and details the distinctive ways in which they work, and shows how they can be applied to a wide swath of data-analytic tasks. While array formulas and functions have long held a place in the spreadsheet toolbox (although, for many of us, shunted to an obscure corner), the dynamic array engine offers a more user-friendly and intelligible set of means for manipulating spreadsheet data in the array mode. The single-formula, multi-cell capability of dynamic arrays has been extended to nearly all existing spreadsheet functions, offering a new, default way of working. As a result, many tasks can now be executed with dynamic arrays without having to resort to the new functions at all. After defining arrays and dynamic array formulas, this book helps you examine the dynamic array property of lifting and how it impacts the formulas, including those written with existing functions. Plenty of illustrations and formulas along the way help you get comfortable using them. From there, you will learn Excel 365's new dynamic functions, including the 14 currently in rollout, each accompanied by instructive examples. In many cases, the examples demonstrate how the new functions can work with long-available functions, such as MID, IF, COUNTIF, etc., which now also boast dynamic array functionality. What You Will Learn Unlock the dynamic array potential in Microsoft Excel Apply dynamic array functions and confidently direct them to real-world spreadsheet tasks Know the distinctive ways in which arrays work and can be applied to numerous data-analytic tasks Who This Book Is For Users of Excel 365 and beyond who are comfortable with, but not necessarily expert in, formula writing, as well as those who are unaware of or not fluent with dynamic arrays. It is also valuable to data journalists and other professionals in need of spreadsheet skills who may unaware of dynamic arrays, and the time they could save by applying them to their work.

Abstract: Rely on this practical, comprehensive guide to significantly improve your cyber safety and data privacy. This book was written expressly for regular, everyday people -- though even technically savvy readers will find many useful tips here. This book contains everything you need to protect yourself-step by step, without judgment, and with as little jargon as possible. Protecting your digital domain is much like defending a medieval castle. Wide moats, towering walls and trained guards provide defense in depth, safeguarding the people and property within against the most common threats. But attempting to dragon-proof your castle would be counterproductive and costly. The goal of this book is to keep your devices and data safe from the most likely and impactful hazards - not a targeted attack by the NSA. Like wearing seat belts and sunscreen in the real world, there are dozens of simple, effective precautions we need to take in the virtual world. Author Carey Parker has structured this book to give you maximum benefit with minimum effort. If you just want to know what you need to do, each chapter includes a detailed checklist of expert tips. But the book also explains why you need to do these things, using entertaining analogies and straightforward explanations.

Abstract: "What if nonprofits could avoid crises and devote more resources to the causes they want to advance? What if instead of being merely reactive, nonprofits could be proactive-confronting issues with radical candor, then taking reasonable steps to address their most important challenges? What if nonprofits could create virtuous cycles of action, leading team members to think like owners and strive for continuous improvement? What if, instead of being fragile (susceptible to reversals) or merely robust (strong, but unyielding), nonprofits could actually become resilient: able to bounce back from challenges and spring forward to create and take advantage of opportunities? I have spent decades exploring these questions. I have trained hundreds of nonprofits and gathered data every step of the way. This book is the result of those efforts"--

Abstract: Use this book to study for the PL-300 Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst exam. The book follows the "Skills Measured" outline provided by Microsoft to help focus your study. Each topic area from the outline corresponds to an area covered by the exam, and the book helps you build a good base of knowledge in each area. Each topic is presented with a blend of practical explanations, theory, and best practices. Power BI is more than just the Power BI Desktop or the Power BI Service. It is two distinct applications and an online service that, together, enable business users to gather, shape, and analyze data to generate and present insights. This book clearly delineates the purpose of each component and explains the key concepts necessary to use each component effectively. Each chapter provides best practices and tips to help an inexperienced Power BI practitioner develop good habits that will support larger or more complex analyses. Many business analysts come to Power BI with a wealth of experience in Excel and particularly with pivot tables. Some of this experience translates readily into Power BI concepts. This book leverages that overlap in skill sets to help seasoned Excel users overcome the initial learning curve in Power BI, but no prior knowledge of any kind is assumed, terminology is defined in non-technical language, and key concepts are explained using analogies and ideas from experiences common to any reader. After reading this book, you will have the background and capability to learn the skills and concepts necessary both to pass the PL-300 exam and become a confident Power BI practitioner.

Abstract: Working effectively with Apple platforms at a corporate or business level includes not only infrastructure, but a mode of thinking that administrators have to adopt to find success. A mode of thinking that forces you to leave 30 years of IT dogma at the door. This book is a guide through how to integrate Apple products in your environment with a minimum of friction. Because the Apple ecosystem is not going away. You'll start by understanding where Apple, third-party software vendors, and the IT community is taking us. What is Mobile Device Management and how does it work under the hood. By understanding how MDM works, you will understand what needs to happen on your networks in order to allow for MDM, as well as the best way to give the least amount of access to the servers or services that's necessary. You'll then look at management agents that do not include MDM, as well as when you will need to use an agent as opposed to when to use other options. Once you can install a management solution, you can deploy profiles on a device or you can deploy profiles on Macs using scripts. With Apple Device Management as your guide, you'll customize and package software for deployment and lock down devices so they're completely secure. You'll also work on getting standard QA environments built out, so you can test more effectively with less effort. This thoroughly revised and expanded Second Edition provides new coverage and updates on daemons and agents, declarative management, Gatekeeper, script options, SSO tools, Azure/Apple Business Essentials integrations and much more.

Abstract: Computers are everywhere --- most obviously in our laptops and smartphones, but also our cars, televisions, microwave ovens, alarm clocks, robot vacuum cleaners, and other smart appliances. Have you ever wondered what goes on inside these devices to make our lives easier but occasionally more infuriating? For more than 20 years, readers have delighted in Charles Petzolds illuminating story of the secret inner life of computers, and now he has revised it for this new age of computing. Cleverly illustrated and easy to understand, this is the book that cracks the mystery. Youll discover what fl ashlights, black cats, seesaws, and the ride of Paul Revere can teach you about computing --- and how human ingenuity and our compulsion to communicate have shaped every electronic device we use. This new expanded edition explores more deeply the bit-by-bit, gate-by-gate construction of the heart of every smart device the central processing unit that combines the simplest of basic operations to perform the most complex of feats. Along with new chapters, Petzold has created a new website, CodeHiddenLanguage.com, that uses animated interactive graphics to make computers even easier to comprehend. From the simple ticking of clocks to the worldwide hum of the internet, Code reveals the essence of the digital revolution.

Abstract: "Clear communication requires the courage to confront the psychological blocks that are holding you back. Learn how to become a fearless and peerless communicator. As a lifelong communication coach, Michelle Gladieux has discovered the four sneaky psychological obstacles that can keep you from becoming an effective communicator: Hiding-Fearing your low self-confidence will expose your supposed weaknesses; Defining-Putting too much stock into your assumptions and being quick to judge right and wrong; Rationalizing-Using "being realistic" to shield yourself from taking chances, engaging in conflict, or doing other scary but potentially rewarding actions; Settling-Stopping at "good enough" instead of pushing for something better. What all these challenges have in common is they require taking risks-to reveal yourself, to question your beliefs, to take a leap of faith, or to move out of your comfort zone. As a response, each chapter includes a Pro Move, or a best practice, and an exercise designed to help you overcome your fears and become a powerful communicator. Courageous communication requires self-knowledge, practice, and a fierce desire to continually improve; this book is like having an expert coach along with you for every step of the journey"--

Abstract: "Based on the bestselling A Complaint Is a Gift (over 275,000 copies sold), this accompanying workbook offers actionable tools that help individuals and organizations transform even the most extreme complaints into gifts that drive their business forward. A Complaint Is a Gift introduced the revolutionary notion that customer complaints are not annoyances to be dodged, denied, or buried but are instead valuable pieces of feedback-not to mention your best bargain in market research. Complaints provide a feedback mechanism that can help organizations rapidly and inexpensively strengthen products, service style, and market focus. Most importantly, complaints that are well received create customer loyalty. Built to be interactive and immersive, the workbook teaches a set of practices, approaches, and tools that anyone can use to navigate fraught customer-facing interactions. It allows readers to practice Janelle Barlow's updated, more efficient three-step formula and enables employees to handle complaints with increased emotional resilience rather than taking them as personal attacks. A Complaint Is a Gift Workbook is packed with the necessary tools to view and treat complaints as a source of innovative ideas that can transform your business"--

Abstract: "The world is moving from purchasing the means to enjoying access to the ends of products and services. Would you rather purchase health care or better health? School or education? Professionals are responsible for achieving a result rather than performing tasks. Yet today's professional firms have a business model centered around transactions and outputs rather than transformations and relationships. This book will introduce a revolutionary new business model that offers access, peace-of-mind, convenience, and a frictionless customer experience. The advantages to this model are many, including: Predictable revenue; not selling services, but creating annuities with a lifetime value that far exceeds whatever you paid to acquire them; collective knowledge of your customers, which is a competitive advantage that cannot be duplicated; the customer relationship is at the center of the firm; not pricing a product or service, but rather taking responsibility for creating customer transformations, moving them from where they are to their desired future; the ability to predict demand and plan capacity more effectively; having a larger impact in your sphere of influence and doing exactly those qualities that attracted you to enter the profession in the first place; all the while building a business with annual recurring revenue, which is going to be more valuable when you are ready to sell"--

Abstract: "Although progress has been made around equality for marginalized groups defined by race, gender, sexual orientation and others - most organizations' Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts do not include people with disabilities. Although 90% of organizations claim to prioritize diversity, only 4% consider disability in DE&I initiatives. Yet people with disabilities make up 15% of the population - about 1 billion people worldwide. They are all too often overlooked. Disability friendly starts with the roadblocks able people have to understanding and engaging people with disabilities, and how to get over the initial discomfort many able people have. It goes on to explain how businesses, schools, government, churches, and other organizations can open up to the contributions and talents of people with disabilities and create a culture of inclusion and reasonable accommodation. It explains the leader's role and how to communicate a vision for change that inspires others. Finally, it explains how to engage, recruit, and hire people with disabilities. This groundbreaking book will open the world's eyes to the overlooked potential of people with disabilities"--

Abstract: INTELLIGENT DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEMS FOR SMART CITY APPLICATIONS This book provides smart city frameworks to address new difficulties by adding new features and allowing the city environment to react to collected data and information to increase the efficiency and sustainability of services for inhabitants. Making a smart city is an emerging strategy to mitigate the problems generated by urban population growth and rapid urbanization. This book aims to provide a better understanding of the concept of smart cities and the application of an intelligent decision support system. Based on the analysis of existing information there are eight critical factors of smart city initiatives: management and organization, technology, governance, policy context, people and communities, economy, built infrastructure, and natural environment. This book will focus on the application of the decision support system in managing these eight crucial aspects of smart cities. The intent in writing this book was also to provide a source that covers the stage-by-stage integration of the four key areas involving planning, physical infrastructure, ICT infrastructure, and deploying the smart solutions necessary for city transformation. With this as the motivation, "Decision Support Systems for Smart City Applications" provides the application of an intelligent decision support system for effectively and efficiently managing the transformation process, which can aid various supply chain stakeholders, academic researchers, and related professionals in building smart cities. Various chapters of this book are expected to support practicing managers during the implementation of smart solutions for city transformation. Audience This book is aimed at both academics and practitioners alike in the fields of intelligent computing, decision support systems, the manufacturing industry, supply chain managers, stakeholders, policymakers, and other technical and administrative personnel.

Abstract: Every day, successful software projects scale and sustain businesses of all sizes and across all industries. Unfortunately, the reality is that many software projects still fail. The reasons behind these failures are seldom due to the underlying technology. Misunderstandings and communication barriers lead to wrong decisions, missed opportunities, communication breakdowns, or worse--huge economic loss. In this digitally connected world, business professionals can't afford to be hands-off on technical projects, but they also can't be expected to have technical certifications. They have first-hand knowledge of the business processes, are subject matter experts in software requirements, and they finance the projects. Even C-level management or board members need to rapidly gain just enough understanding of technology to make mission-critical decisions for businesses to survive and flourish. In most software projects the number of non-technical stakeholders far exceeds the number of techies. This book distills the world of software projects into simple terms and relatable metaphors for even the most technically adverse reader. Real-life examples, entertaining analogies, and hand-drawn illustrations will stick with readers throughout their own software projects, bolstering their success. Business requirements, use cases, process flows--the list goes on. It's all broken down in this game-changing book aimed at delivering for business and tech teams what DevOps has done for developers and operations.

Abstract: A service-oriented architecture is fundamental to many new IT applications, from web development to social software and cloud computing. The same principles can be applied to every aspect of the service-oriented enterprise not just in IT. In this book, youll explore how an enterprise architecture and viable services can link together to create a simpler yet far more powerful view of the enterprise, as a dynamic, unified whole. You can use the ideas, principles and methods described here in business transformation, workflow mapping, system design and much else besides, in every type of enterprise - including those in which there may be little or no IT at all. Step by step, youll walk through the basics of service-oriented architectures, the four key categories of services and how they connect, and how all of this comes together in real-world service design, implementation and operations. From this, youll discover how to identify and describe the different types of services that you need for your enterprise, and how to distinguish between the services that you can safely outsource, versus those that you do need to keep in-house. By the end of this book, youll learn how to construct function models and service models of your enterprise as a base for service-mapping, and how to pinpoint and map the information flows you need for service-management and service-performance, to keep everything on-track to purpose. You will: See how an enterprise architecture can work as a literal architecture Understand Stafford Beers "Viable System Model" and adapt it as a robust model Study how a Viable Services Model provides a template for service design that covers functionals, non-functionals and operational governance for services.
