The departure and homecoming of the ruler are carried out with much pomp, similar to the leaving and return of troops in battle. Dances performed therefore include war dances as well as cultic and entertaining dances.

    Abstract: Lines are twisted from the bast strips of a reedlike plant and small fish hooks attached to them. Small bait fish are caught just under the the surface of the water with a flat net basket, attached to the long fishing line in the water and spread out in the water. After some time the line is brought in again, and the fish caught are put into the boat.

Aufbereitung des Tons: Schlämmen, Magern (Baryt) und Kneten (mit Maschine und Hand), Formen eines Ziertellers, eines Henkelkruges und einer Ochtruper Nachtigall (Trillerflöte). Bemalen, Glasieren, Ornamentieren. Brennen verschiedener Tonwaren in einem elektrischen Brennofen. Herausnehmen und Prüfen nach dem Brand.
    Abstract: Clay is cut in a clay-pit and transported on a two-wheeled cart to Ochtrup, where the clay is then stored in a bricklined pit, to "soak". Before processing it is kneaded, first mechanically and then by hand. The master-potter shapes a plate, which is then primed, coated with paint, and finally glazed. The same work procedure is demonstrated on a jug, with the addition of the shaping and attaching of the handle. The film also shows the manufacture of "Ochtrup Nightingales", small, clay warbler-whistles, and finally the baking of various earthenware in an electric kiln.

Zum Schluß wird das fertige Werkstück vom Meister unter Musikbegleitung in feierlicher Prozession zum Ahnenaltar gebracht und dort den Ahnen vorgewiesen.
    Abstract: A slice of an elephant's tooth is sawed off. With hatchet and knife this ivory piece is worked into an arm ring to be worn by a young woman. The finished product is taken to an altar and ceremoniously displayed to the ancestors for their approval.

Die Paste wird in einen Widderhornbehälter gefüllt. Während der Herstellung erfolgen mehrmals Trank- und Hühneropfer, auch am Ahnenopferplatz.

Such amulets contain a substance ("medicine") consisting of various ingredients which have been crushed, charred, and poured into an animal horn.

    Abstract: Es werden Kriegstänze mit gemimten Kampfhandlungen unter Voranschreiten des Kriegsführers und ein Scheinkampf zwischen zwei Kriegerscharen mit je einem Vorkämpfer vorgeführt. Zum Schluß führen zwei mit Bogen, Beil, Schild und Helm bewaffnete Krieger die Kampfesweise beim Einzelkampf vor.
    Abstract: Presents three forms of war dances. The first is performed with invisible weapons and drum accompaniment and is the same dance used before the departure to actual battle and after the victorious return of the soldiers. The second scene is a mock combat between two troops of warriors. At the end of that performance two warriors equipped with bow, hatchet, shield and helmet demonstrate the procedures used in hand-to-hand combat.

    Abstract: Festlich geschmückte Männer formieren sich zum Tanz, legen dabei die rechte Hand auf die linke Schulter der Vordermänner, schreiten hintereinander rhythmisch im Uhrzeigersinn schräg vorwärts - kurz durch Rückwärtsschreiten unterbrochen - und bilden dabei eine elliptische Laufspur. Sie werden von zwei Bambusklarinettenspielern und zwei Trommlern angeführt. Frauen bringen Maniokbier und tanzen mit.

    Abstract: Zwei Tänzerinnen versetzen sich im Tempelhof in Trance und tanzen den exorzistischen Sanghiyang. Der Tanz wird von dem Ketjak der Männer begleitet. Zum Schluß tanzen die Tänzerinnen über der schwelenden Glut des Feuers. Sie werden ins Haus getragen, dort mit Wasser besprengt und aus der Trance geholt. Aufgenommen mit 16 B/s; Vorführgeschw. 18 B/s.
    Abstract: The film shows how the Sanghyang dancing girls go into a trance, and while in a trance condition, dance the excorcistic Sanghyang. The dance accompanied by the traditional Ketjak of the men, who while deeply angrossed in performing the sitting dance, strive together with the Sanghyang dancing girls to ward-off threatening evil.

    Abstract: Ausschnitte aus dem Pfahlfest in Jhabua: Junge Männer versuchen auf einen etwa 10 m langen (Durchmesser 30 cm) mit Öl und Seife eingeschmierten Pfahl zu klettern. Oben befestigen sie ein zugeschnürtes Tuch, das Zucker und eine Kupfermünze enthält. Frauen versuchen die Jungen mit langen Bambusstöcken am Klettern zu hindern.

    Abstract: Nach den Beileidsbezeugungen der Trauergäste vor den Hinterbliebenen finden lang andauernde Trauertänze statt, in deren Mittelpunkt der Sohn der Verstorbenen und dessen Frau stehen. Die Bestattung in einem Hain nahe dem Dorf findet ohne die Verwandten der Toten statt. Zwei Wochen später wird eine Nachfeier mit Hirsebier veranstaltet, bei der die weiblichen Hinterbliebenen gewaschen und kahlgeschoren werden. Schließlich wird die Hütte der Verstorbenen verbrannt.
    Abstract: Shows excerpts of the Shangama mourning ritual at the death of a member of the tribe. Hour-long dances are held to honor the deceased and include the emotional movement of bereaved survivors as well as the sympathy shown towards them by guests. A segment of the dance is a pantomine illustrating the demons of sickness being driven away. The conclusion of the actual burial occurs with the burning of the hut where the deceased once lived.

    Abstract: In einem vorgewärmten Erdofen werden Bananen drei Tage lang gedünstet. Danach werden sie geschält und in einem Trog, mit Gras versetzt, geknetet, um Bananensaft zu gewinnen. Gelegentlich gießt man Wasser hinzu. In Krüge abgefüllt, gärt der Saft nach Hinzufügen von Getreidemehl einige Tage lang. Das fertige Bier wird bei einem festlichen Umtrunk der Männer mit Trinkhalmen genossen.
    Abstract: Shows the steps taken to prepare banana beer in the country of Burundi. Includes: cutting down banana bunches; getting the earth oven ready for steaming the fruit; crushing the bananas; and straining the juice and pouring it into earthen jugs. A pitcher of beer is prepared in order to be taken to a festival as a gift, and a few scenes of that festival are shown.

    Abstract: Nach den vorbereitenden Arbeiten (Aufhängen, Spannen und Flicken der Netze, Säubern der Boote) laufen die Fischer von Kaoula mit Pirogen, die mit großen, rechteckigen Sprietsegeln versehen sind, aus. Wiederholt wird ein kegelförmiges Wurfnetz geworfen, eingeholt und entleert. Die gefangenen Fische werden auf Knüppelrosten zum Trocknen und Räuchern ausgebreitet und schließlich in Körbe gepackt.
    Abstract: After preliminary works (mending the nets, cleaning the boats) the fishermen of Kaoula depart with their pirogues with their large rectangular sails. A cone-shaped cast net is thrown out, drawn in several times. The fish are put on wooden racks for drying and smoking and packed in baskets.

    Abstract: Unter Leitung des sakralen Häuptlings führt eine Gruppe von Männern mehrere Grabopfer aus. Ein alter Mann bringt zunächst ein Trankopfer (Hirsebier) dar und tötet ein Hühnchen als Orakel. Danach werden ein weiteres Huhn und ein Widder durch Schächten geopfert. Das Blut wird über das Grab verteilt. Nach einer Ansprache des Häuptlings und dem Trinken des Opferbieres wird der Widder zerlegt.
    Abstract: A founding father of the Nuna is honored by the sacrifice of a ram and a chicken at his gravesite. The current chief gives a speech which gives further meaning to the ceremony. During the sacrifice the participants drink a special beer symbolic of holding communion with the founder.

    Abstract: Zwei Männer fällen einen Baum, aus dem nach mehrmaligem Abmessen ein ca. 5 m langer Einbaum hergestellt wird. Der Stamm wird ausgehöhlt, und die Wände des Bootes werden geglättet. Bei der Arbeit bringen die Männer ein Trankopfer dar. Nach Fertigstellung wird das Boot zu einem Gewässer transportiert und zu Wasser gelassen. Für ein Einweihungsfest werden Speisen zubereitet und von den Männern gegessen. Ein Mann demonstriert die Verwendung des Bootes bei Paddelfahrten auf dem Wasser.
    Abstract: A tree is felled, measured off and the approximate shape and dimensions of the boat to be made from it are marked with an axe. The trunk is hollowed out, the walls are smoothed. Finally a drink-offering is made by the workers for the wounded tree and the new boat. In addition the film shows the transport of the finished boat and its launching, its first trip and finally a feast.

    Abstract: Durch Einatmen von Wacholderrauch versetzt sich ein Dayal (Schamane) von Danyor in Trance. Er hält nach Geistern Umschau, ahmt ihren Tanz nach und singt, während die Zuschauer lärmen und die Musik spielt. Eine Ohnmacht beendet die Séance.
    Abstract: A shaman dances while under the trance-like effect of juniper smoke. He is able to see spirits, and he imitates their dances. At times the shaman stops to listen to the musical instruments as the spirits speak to him through those instruments. The seance ends when the shaman swoons, falls, and awakens from the trance.

Frauen bereiten aus Weizenmehl und Wasser Kuskus. In einem Kochtopf über einem offenen Feuer kochen sie aus Gemüse eine scharfe Soße. In einem geflochtenen Behälter über dem Topf wird der Kuskus in dem entweichenden Dampf gar gedünstet. Anschließend werden die zum Festmahl ankommenden Gäste feierlich begrüßt.

Einem anderen Mädchen schneidet man in den unteren Teil der Wangen weitere kleine Narben ein und behandelt sie ebenfalls mit Ruß.

    Abstract: Um neue Mitglieder in den nur Frauen zugänglichen Bundu-Orden aufzunehmen, wird im Busch ein Ordensdorf errichtet, in das die Buschgeister durch einen Maskentanz geholt werden. Im Hauptdorf zelebrieren Ordensangehörige Ahnenopfer und zeigen Tanzproben. Das Abschlußfest besteht aus Tänzen und einem Umzug der Frauen durch das Hauptdorf und dem Auftritt der Bundu-Geister im Ordensdorf. Auch dieser Teil der Zeremonie ist von Tänzen der Frauen begleitet. Aufgenommen mit 16 B/s; Vorführgeschw. 18 B/s.
    Abstract: To adopt new members in the Bundu order, which is restricted to women only, an order village is erected in the bush and the bush spirits are called in with a mask dance. In the main village the members of the order sacrifice to the ancestors and show dance rehearsals. The final feast consists of dances and a procession of the women in the main village and the performance of the Bundu spirits in the village of the order. This part of the ceremony is also accompanied by women's dances.Recording speed 16 fps, projection speed 18 fps.

    Abstract: Aus Baumwollflocken formt eine Frau Ringe und spinnt sie mit frei herunterhängender Spindel. Um zwei Spannpfosten windet ein Mann einen Baumwollfaden in endloser Spirale zu zwei dichten, vertikalen Fadenwänden, bereitet Querverbindungen vor, verknotet sie auf der obersten Bahn und führt die herunterhängenden Enden wie zwei jeweils gedoppelte Schußfäden durch die sich dadurch ineinanderschiebenden Längsfadenwände.
    Abstract: A woman makes rings from cotton flakes and spins them with a suspended spindle. A man winds a cotton thread around two poles in an endless spiral forming two dense vertical threadwalls, prepares tie trunks, knots them with the upper panel and draws the hanging ends like two doubled wefts through the longitudinal walls fitting into each other.

    Abstract: Eine Frau spaltet Lianen mit den Zähnen zu dünnen, 2 m langen flechtfähigen Streifen. Sie werden an den Enden in Einzelbündel zusammengefaßt und quer durchflochten. Eine andere Frau flicht aus gespaltenen Lianenstreifen ein Körbchen in einfacher Leinenbindung, das von einer viereckigen Bodenfläche aus zylindrisch zu ca. 20 cm Höhe emporwächst.
    Abstract: A woman splices vine fibres with her teeth into thin, plaitable stripes of 2 metres length. They are fixed into bundles at the ends and plaited diagonally. Another woman plaits a little basket in simple linen-weave technique, which rises cylindrically from a square basis up to a height of approximately 20 cm.

    Abstract: A woman in Ifran-Aly makes some red-brown bowls without decoration; the process starts with digging the clay in a pit, transport in a woven bag, mixing and kneading. Then the forming with the help of a hand-turned potsherd is shown, polishing with a smooth stone and a piece of leather, drying and firing.
