Abstract: Among the Kaba wrestling matches associated with a dance are a kind of "rite de passage", the passage from the age class of boys to that of adult men. In the beginning the film shows one of the wrestlers colouring his body with red earth-colour and putting on the goatskin, the traditional wrestler's clothing. The wrestling matches are preceded by a dance performed on the central place, presented in the film in excerpts. On the border of the place stands the orchestra which consists of two drums and one xylophone. After the dance the wrestling matches take place, the boys wrestling by pairs. During the match the girls dance around the wrestlers and utter quavers to encourage them. The three excerpts from wrestling matches presented in the film show that the wrestlers follow certain definite rules.

Abstract: The fortune-teller presses by hand four rows of spots into the sand. The rows are measured and according to a straight or irregular number of spots being left over, the result is retained as a symbol. The procedure is repeated four times. From the resulting four figures, four further figures are won by the combination. These eight figures are gradually reduced to a final figure giving the answer to the oracle query.

Abstract: A mixture of crushed clay and horse's dung is mixed with water and kneaded. This pulp is later used to case the wax models. A model cast piece is ormed in wax. It shows the figure of a camel with saddle, intended as a headdecoration. On the wax model a thin layer of clay is first layed on to fill out the fine indentures and then a coat of firmer clay follows. The next day the dried form is heated, the wax melted out. A crucible with metal is fitted through a clay rim on the cast. The cast is heated in the forge. As soon as the metal becomes liquid it is poured from the crucible into the cast. The cooled-off cast is smashed and the finished castings carefully elaborated on.

Abstract: Die Tubu-Frau Bila errichtet im Trockental Enneri Ogu ein Mattenzelt: Beschaffung von ergänzendem Ast- und Bindematerial, Errichtung der Pfosten, Anbinden der Querstangen, Errichten des Dachgerüstes sowie Anlegen und Befestigen der Dach- und Seitenmatten. Abbrechen des Zeltes: Abnehmen der Matten, Aufschneiden der Bindestellen des Gerüstes und Zusammenlegen der Stangen.
Abstract: The mat tent is the Tubu-nomad's dwelling. The tent is built up by the woman. In the undergrowth of the Enneri Ogu the Tubu-woman Bila chops off a few branches to complete structure of the tent. To bind it she cuts off the leaves of the dum-palm tree. With the tip of a lance she digs holes for the tent poles and at the same time fits in the matching poles. The crossbars are tied on the poles. To begin with a side-part of the tent structure is set up and then part of the roof is erected. Then the second side-part follows and finally the roof is completed. After Bila has examined the structure, she puts on the mats. These are partly tied to the structure, partly pinned on with wooden pegs. On taking down the tent, the mats of the side-wall are first taken apart and rolled together, after that the roof mats follow. The binding places of the structure are cut open, the poles put together. The stretcher frame of the storage room is taken apart and as very last the poles for the water skinbag are taken down.

The kórdo have also knowledge of magical practices to extract the spirits of sickness from the body where they have penetrated. The film shows the kórdo Mandolo of the Barama tribe (Kenga) treating two patients. Mandolo is an old, almost blind woman. For payment the first patient, an old man, has brought a gourdful of millet. He has uncovered his renal region where he feels pain. With a bunch of leaves the kórdo makes some magical gestures, then she extracts, by means of the leaves, the sickness, respectively the matter of sickness, from the old man's body. She hands the leaves to one of the bystanders who takes out the matter of sickness in the form of little stones and pieces of charcoal. The kórdo now tears off some leaves, grinds them in her hand, spits on them, and then extracts the sickness from the old man's knee. In the same way she then treats the other knee and one of the toes of the man. In the next case the kórdo uses a different method of treatment. The female patient kneels down over a little hole, the kórdo takes two leaves of the calothropis-tree out of a gourd of water, spits on them, and then extracts by the leaves the sickness from the woman's body. At the same time the female assistant of the kórdo sprinkles water on the aching part of the body. Finally the leaves are buried in the hole.

Abstract: In his small woodworking shop at St. Magdalena (Gsiestal) Konrad Gietel is making staves from pine wood for a churn. First he assembles the staves, then he applies cold glue, and finally he fits iron straps around the churn to keep the staves tightly together. After some time, while the glue has set, rough patches on the wood are removed with a plane, and the inside and outside surfaces are made smooth. A bottom piece is fitted. Gietel has cut a wooden die and fits a long handle. He makes the cover plug on a wood turning lathe, and then fits the churning board with the ropes. The churn (Schlacker) is finished by painting the staves red and the iron straps green.

Abstract: The carver has selected a tree suitable for carving the stool. He fells the tree and cuts from its trunk the desired length of timber which he then roughly trims with an axe. The further carving is done in the village. The carver's only tool is an adze which he may furnish with two hafts of different length. Moreover the iron blade may be hafted either horizontally or vertically. The carver first shapes the seat, then the stem and finally the base of the stool. Once the carving is done, he sets up a hearth ventilated by a bag bellows, heats the irons in the fire and then decorates the stool. Finally he rubs ground peanuts on the wood and smoothes the seat with a stone. Stools of this kind are used by women only.

Abstract: The film shows how a water supply made of trunks is being repaired. Trunks of 3 - 4 meters length are hollowed out; a 2.5 m long tube drill is used. The thick ends of these wooden tubes are widened and cone-shaped with a special tool (kachler). In the field, the thin ends of the trunks are tapered off with an axe and smoothed with a draw knife, and assembled. One tube is placed into a small ditch in the ground. Leakages are packed with moss as sealing material. The tubes fitted together serve as water supply from a well to the farm buildings.

Abstract: Salanang Sen Tao, ein Schamane aus Huye Luang, bringt am Neujahrstag als Oberhaupt seiner Familie ein Bittopfer an die Ahnengeister dar.
Abstract: This sacrifice addresses the ancestor spirits. In front of the entrance of the shaman's house the ritual objects are assembled on a small altar table: incense sticks, alcholic liquid in bowls, rice, and spirit paper. The shaman standing in front of the altar invokes the spirits. He throws the oracle rods to inquire whether the sacrifice has been accepted and gives the fowl to two women who slaughter it in the manner required by ritual. Blood is sprinkled on the altar, on the rice and on the spirit paper. After the fowl is boiled it is brought back to the altar table. A pair of cymbals, a burning oil lamp, and smoking incense sticks are placed next to it. The shaman comes back to the altar table and continues its invocations. He throws again the oracle rods. Finally he burns the spirit paper, picks up the oracle rods and returns into his house. Members of the family remove the altar table and carry the ritual objects to the ancestor shrine inside the house.

Abstract: Shows two scenes of ray hunting. In the western lagoon of Onotoa men swim and dive to hunt rays. When an animal has been speared it is transported home on a sailboat and is divided up on the beach. During the long excursion members of the crew shoot fish underwater with rubber slings and iron arrows. Mussels are caught on shore for immediate consumption. In the northern lagoon of Nonuti men are shown maneuvering their sailboat in the vicinity of a large stingray, and spearing it.

Abstract: A man from the village of Buariki harvests pandanus fruit in the bush. His wife back in the settlement prepares the fruit by mashing it, steaming it in an earth oven, and crushing the juicy base. The resulting pulpy substance is spread out on a leaf and is dried in the sun for a few days. These tuae are folded into packages and kept year-round as reserve food.
