    Kurzfassung: This book deals with a variety of socio-cultural, economic and political problems facing Cameroon and the rest of Africa, with particular reference to unemployment, corruption, poverty, criminality, violence, insecurity, and moral decadence. It presents a critical analysis of government policies from the colonial era to the present time; arguing that most of these policies have been stalled by an uncommitted leadership. The regime in Cameroon has drifted away from basic managerial and democratic principles in in favour of the ethnicisation of politics, sterile consumption, clientelism and patronage. The book contends that corruption has become the main instrument of governance whereby the political and economic elites control the wealth of the nation at the expense of a majority who wallow in abject poverty and misery. Faced with the difficult economic and political situation, most youth and the intelligentsia have adopted official and unofficial' means to circumvent all immigration rules to travel to affluent Western countries, the consequences notwithstanding. Brain drain is often the outcome. Further, it examines issues of social exclusion, political representation and marginalization with special focus on the predicament of Anglophone Cameroonians as a socio-cultural community. The inclusion of examples and case studies based on empirical and secondary data from Africa is intended to foreground the importance of comparison, and attract the interest of both academic and non-academic readership.

Diese prägte vom 7. bis 1. Jahrtausend v.Chr. nicht nur nachhaltig menschliches Siedlungsverhalten, sondern auch die wirtschaftlichen, politischen und kulturellen Beziehungen zu benachbarten Regionen, so dass sich das Gebiet in vielfacher Hinsicht als Grenzregion fassen lässt. Simone Mühl geht in ihrer Untersuchung zur wechselseitigen Geschichte des mittleren Osttigrisgebiets von archäologischem Material aus Notgrabungen des irakischen Antikendienstes in der Umgebung von Assur, der ersten Hauptstadt des assyrischen Reiches, aus. Um Aspekte kultureller Unterschiede oder Gemeinsamkeiten der Kulturgruppen nördlich und südlich des Kleinen Zab näher zu beleuchten, werden die Funde und Befunde dieser Untersuchungen in einen regionalen und überregionalen Kontext eingebettet. Zudem wird die Analyse des archäologischen Materials mit der Fernerkundung der Region anhand von Satellitenbildaufnahmen kombiniert. Dabei wird die Landschaft auf anthropogen verursachte Veränderungen untersucht und es konnten beispielsweise 1672 Tell- und Flachsiedlungen lokalisiert sowie das antike Verkehrs- und Bewässerungsnetz in erhaltenen Teilen kartiert, rekonstruiert und kontextualisiert werden. Mühls Studie liefert nicht nur wichtige Einblicke in das Wechselspiel von Innovation und Kulturtransfer, sondern auch in die Abgrenzung von Kulturgruppen im mittleren Osttigrisgebiet und bildet so die Grundlage für ein neues Verständnis ökonomischer und soziokultureller Entwicklungen, die der Region am Tigris ihr noch heute sichtbares Gepräge gegeben haben. ReiheAbhandlungen der Deutschen Orient-Gesellschaft - Band 28.

    Kurzfassung: Großfürst Konstantin Nikolaevic (1827-1892) war einer der bemerkenswertesten russischen Staatsmänner des 19. Jahrhunderts. Der zweitgeborene Sohn von Kaiser Nikolaj I. begründete als General-Admiral der russischen Flotte im Marineministerium eine Kultur des Wandels in der St. Petersburger Politik, die dazu führte, dass sein Bruder, Kaiser Aleksandr II., Mitte der 1850er Jahre ein groß angelegtes Reformprogramm initiierte. Konstantin wurde bald unverzichtbar für die Politik im Reich seines Bruders: Er setzte die epochale Befreiung der Bauern aus der Leibeigenschaft durch und öffnete damit den Weg für weitere Modernisierungen der Autokratie. Als er kaiserlicher Statthalter im russisch beherrschten Polen wurde, verfolgte er die große Vision einer Versöhnung von Polen mit Russland auf der Grundlage von Respekt und Gesetzlichkeit, eine Vision, die jedoch im Aufstandskrieg von 1863 unterging.Matthias Stadelmanns Studie zur russischen Reformära verknüpft die Analyse entscheidender Wirkungsstationen des Großfürsten mit einer Kulturgeschichte des Politischen. Erst über die biographisch orientierte Betrachtung Konstantin Nikolaevics erschließen sich grundlegende Strukturen der Petersburger Politik: Reformdiskurse, Kommunikationsmechanismen, Handlungsstrategien und Entscheidungsfaktoren.     Kurzfassung: Während im Leitmedium Fernsehen politische Themen zunehmend als »cultural fast food« (Pierre Bourdieu) aufbereitet werden, entstehen im Internet transnationale (Gegen-)Öffentlichkeiten, die die neoliberale Ordnung in der ersten Dekade des 21. Jahrhunderts in Frage stellen und für eine Demokratisierung der Lebensverhältnisse eintreten. Das Buch untersucht, wie diese transnationalen zivilgesellschaftlichen Netzwerke entstehen und welches kommunikative Potenzial sie entfalten können. Eine wichtige Frage ist dabei, ob sich kosmopolitische Sichtweisen und Praktiken herausbilden, die am Dialog orientiert sind und ausgehend vom transnationalen Charakter gesellschaftlicher Entwicklungen nach sozialen und kulturellen Veränderungen streben. Kovacs's main emphasis is on the interwar period when unemployment, expansion of the welfare system, and competition for state jobs during the Great Depression, combined with crass anti-Semitism on the part of engineers and medical associations, radically altered previously liberal policies of open entry and equal educational opportunity. Liberal Professions and Illiberal Politics analyzes to what extent these new policies were dictated by authoritarian governments from above and to what extent they originated within the professions themselves. The story ends with the Holocaust, which sealed the fate of those professionals who had become victims of persecution under the German occupation of Hungary.

Ihre Erfahrungen mit dem neuen Medium des Films reflektiert sie in ihren vor dem ersten Weltkrieg entstandenen, 1919 veröffentlichten »Kinotypen. Vor und hinter den Filmkulissen. Zwölf Kapitel aus der Kinderstube des Films«, die durchaus als Vorläufer der Feuilletons Siegfried Kracauers zum Film betrachtet werden können. Why is it common in Chinese enterprises that within an organization there is generally a bureaucracy to control a network of comparatively independent sub-units? There are different forms of self-organized sub-units within an enterprise, such as affiliated subsidiaries or self-directed teams, contracted out business units, independent local branches, profit-center departments, and internal startup teams. Why do Chinese enterprises always network with each other to realize an all-win situation? These cooperative networks include regional business groups, small enterprise networks, platform-based models, network consolidators, and industry networks characterized by one town focusing on a single industry. In exploring these questions, the book examines the form and structure of Chinese social networks and indigenous management. It looks at the origins and importance of Chinese management philosophies, including "Guanxi" management - a concept and practice crucial to understanding business in China and increasingly central to management teaching in China. Guanxi is examined in great detail and from various dynamics and perspectives.
