Kurzfassung: "Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The rich storytelling traditions of the Ashéninka Perené Arawaks of eastern Peru are showcased in this bilingual collection of traditional narratives, ethnographic accounts, women's autobiographical stories, songs, chants, and ritual speeches. The Ashéninkas are located in the colonization frontier at the foot of the eastern Andes and the western fringe of the Amazonian jungle. Unfortunately, their language has a slim chance of surviving because only about three hundred fluent speakers remain. This volume collects and preserves the power and vitality of Ashéninka oral and linguistic traditions, as told by thirty members of the Native community. Upper Perene Arawak Narratives of History, Landscape, and Ritual covers a range of themes in the Ashéninka oral tradition, through genres such as myths, folk tales, autobiographical accounts, and ethnographic texts about customs and rituals, as well as songs, chants, and oratory. Transcribed and translated by a specialist in Ashéninka language varieties, Elena Mihas, and grounded in the actual performances of Asheninka speakers, this collection makes these stories available in English for the first time. Each original text in Ashéninka is accompanied by an English translation and each theme is introduced with an essay providing biographical, cultural, and linguistic information. The result is a masterful, authoritative, yet entertaining and provocative collection of oral literature that vividly testifies to the power of Ashéninka storytelling"--

Kurzfassung: John Palmer arrived in a Wichí community, located in Argentina, thirty years ago as an anthropologist - today he has married a Wichí woman with whom he has five sons in the last 5 years, who babble English, Wichí, and Spanish words. As the legal advisor of the Lapacho Mocho community, and as a part of the family, he works to obtain Qatu's freedom, a member of the Wichí community who has been in jail for 5 years waiting for an oral hearing on a charge of abusing his wife's daughter. The film gains depth and impact from its more intimate domestic interludes involving John's wife Tojweya their young children - including a baby only weeks old. So while Palmer has achieved considerable eminence in his field, winning the Royal Anthropological Institute's Lucy Mair Medal in 2009, his immersion into Wichí culture, history and customs has become much more than a matter of academic ethnography.

Kurzfassung: "Among the Wana people, semi-nomads from the Indonesian forest, Indo Pino is a shaman recognized by everybody. Her nephew, who is also a shaman's son, converted to Christianity some months ago and is now preaching apocalyptic visions. And for him, if these visions come from [G]od, the visions of the shamans inevitably must come from Satan. Through the Christian concepts of sin and original fault, good and evil notions are revised. The traditional healing practices of the shamans are heavily under attack. Under our eyes a fight between two worlds of religious belief is taking place."--Original container.
