Kurzfassung:
The Sudan, the largest county in Africa, is undergoing a period of rapid, often dramatic, change. Political strife, ecological disasters, and economic crises have overtaken many of its people, leading to widespread population movement, urban growth, inflation, and social unrest. The live of Sudanese women particularly are becoming very different as they assume new roles and responsibilities in response to altered circumstances.Susan Kenyon looks at developments in Sudanese society through the eyes and words of five women from the town of Sennar in Blue Nile Province. She illustrates the stengths and stability of local community and family life through the careers of a hairdresser, a market woman, a midwife, a holy woman, and a leader of a spirit possession cult. These women talk about their families and homes, their work and their social lives, their hopes and aspiration. Their accounts offer insight into contemporary life in a major developing country and the changing role of women within its society. (Umschlagtext)
