    Abstract: Elaborating on Goffman's ideas of self and face, the chapter examines the ways in which patients with personality disorders manage the stigma of impulsive behaviours (such as verbal or physical violence) in psychiatric assessment interviews. Patients display three different types of stance when they describe their impulsive behaviours. They can (1) show self-reproach through evaluations, verbal marking of the exceptionality of their behaviour, or through bodily displays. They can also (2) lessen the reproach by conveying that there are also moments or aspects of their behaviour when they do not deviate from the norm. Sometimes, however, the patients (3) defy the reproach by showing joy or satisfaction with their impulsive behaviours. The three stance displays correspond to the three strategies of self-management of stigmatised persons discussed by Goffman. While Goffman discussed such strategies at the level of autobiographical time, conversation analysis demonstrates them in micro-interactional time.

    Abstract: This chapter extends some of the observations that Goffman made on a class of vocalisations he called 'response cries' (1978) to the domain of the multi-modal by examining an embodied practice in English interaction: a particular facial expression that 1) has particular compositional features and 2) occurs in a particular sequential position. Compositionally, this expression consists of raised eyebrows and pursed lips; sequentially, it is produced in response to a claim made by a co-participant. Instances from both institutional and mundane interaction are examined here. These show participants may or may not be gazing at their co-participant; the expression is not necessarily designed to get uptake. In this respect, this facial expression resembles Goffman's 'response cries' in being produced in the presence of others, but not necessarily designed to get responses from those others. Response relevance is seen to be shaped as much by sequential position as features of composition. This facial expression is shown, when analysed in its sequential environment, to constitute an embodied display of scepticism.

    Abstract: "Attention" is a primordial topic throughout Goffman's work. Already his dissertation thesis (1953) includes a separate chapter on "the organization of attention". In his later studies he developed various concepts related to attention, such as focused/unfocused interaction or "civil inattention". Although attention is evidently a crucial dimension of the interactional order, Goffman did not elaborate this topic systematically. The study of attention was later refined and enriched by conversation analysts who underlined the role of visual displays of attentiveness in social interaction. Against the backdrop of the notion of "focused interaction", this paper examines how the psychological approach to "joint attention" differs from or amplifies Goffman's studies. Based on some of Cartier-Bresson's photos, it is shown that the contrasting set of focused/unfocused interaction needs to be supplemented by a third type of attention order, in which members are collectively oriented to an outward event. After a discussion of some of the practices of sustaining and re-establishing a focus of attention, empirical evidence is provided that certain interactional purposes can be achieved by displaying inattention. In the final discussion of Goffman's concept of "civil inattention", some historical and sociological dimensions are pointed out along which this concept can be further studied.

    Abstract: This chapter is to demonstrate the challenges related to free time of seniors (especially EU residents) in the 21st century. The starting point for the considerations was to explain the concept of free time and to specify its characteristics, functions, and ways of using it. The structure of the seniors' time budget and leisure activities undertaken by this group were analyzed (based on Eurostat data). Subsequently, one of the important forms of free time management, that is, tourism, was studied. First, the essence of tourist activity was discussed and the reasons for undertaking it in the autumn of life. Second, the functions of senior tourism were distinguished and data on the participation of seniors from EU countries in it were presented. Third, taking into account that the concept of active aging is increasingly the participation in various types of courses, trainings, workshops, etc., the chapter defines the place of seniors in the process of lifelong learning. The tasks of the University of the Third Age (U3A) were systematized and the available data on the participation of European seniors in educational programs were analyzed. The conclusion emphasizes the heterogeneity of the silver head segment.

    Abstract: Foundations and mechanisms of Islamophobia in the WestIslamophobia as a Form of Radicalisation discusses the scope and fragmented boundaries of Islamophobia as a concept and a sociopolitical reality. The fifteen chapters of this collection cover and connect interdisciplinary research, media content analysis, media discourse analysis, ethnographic research, intersectoral advocacy work, and action research conducted in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Poland, Portugal, and Spain. Confronted with an Islamophobia that is growing as a symptom of broader societal malaise in the West, a resistance against it is also arising. It is now a question of better understanding the foundations and mechanisms of this metasolidarity and resistance.     Abstract: Superdiversity explores processes of diversification and the complex, emergent social configurations that now supersede prior forms of diversity in societies around the world. Migration plays a key role in these processes, bringing changes not just in social, cultural, religious and linguistic phenomena, but also in the ways that these phenomena combine with others like gender, age, and legal status. The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social ""difference"" have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed, and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations, and inequalities. This interdisciplinary volume asks the crucial questions: How does a better understanding of empathy contribute, if at all, to our understanding of others? How is it implicated in the ways we perceive, understand and constitute others as subjects? Conversations on Empathy examines how empathy might be enacted and experienced either as a way to highlight forms of otherness or, instead, to overcome what might otherwise appear to be irreducible differences.     Abstract: This chapter is a consideration of how we may approach the question of remediation in digital games, suggesting that we recognize how digital game remediation incorporates what are often more obvious elements from analogue game design into the more implicit infrastructure of digital contexts. Additionally, such remediation often exhibits “hypomediacy,” the denial of game design mediation, with important consequences for how useful digital games have become for institutional projects and their claims about reality. Anthropological treatments of ritual, and specifically how the engagement of audiences with ambiguous performances produces the real for participants, point toward important implications for digital games, where the infrastructural game elements may underwrite a similar process of reality construction through player performance. My overall suggestion is that when we give the cultural form of game its due (as we have for ritual and bureaucracy) – that is, when we incorporate a robust consideration of game features into our analyses – we will be in a better position to illuminate the ways in which our engagement with digital infrastructure is fraught with claims about the real.

    Abstract: Whether it is possible to ensure stability, peace and social cohesion in countries with deep societal divisions where identity prevails over other bases of mobilisation is one of the central political questions of our time. What type of institutional design suits deeply mobilised cleavages? This chapter discusses the different institutional approaches adopted in three federations of Africa to manage politically mobilised cleavages, and examines whether institutional design matters in addressing demands from politically mobilised groups. The main issue is whether such divisions should be treated as building-blocks for political engagement and institutions built around them, or rather be diffused and deliberately divided into several sub-units. It is argued that institutional design does matter, particularly when there are deep territorially-based divisions, and proposes consociational parliamentary federations as opposed to integrationist presidential federations. The latter aim to divide major ethnic groups into many small-size states denying their self-government right, while the former aim to empower groups by redrawing territories to ensure they become a majority at sub-state level. They also bring the major political actors into power and minimise the risks of ‘winner-takes-all’ politics associated with presidential systems.

    Abstract: This chapter focuses on the multifaceted relationship between people and the land on which their families lived for generations. Summarizing this relationship as the place-bound relationship, this chapter examines the ways this place-bound relationship affected the meaning of home for people living in Yanxia. Vernacular place in rural China includes the system of settings where daily activities often take place outside the house. It also consists of highly socialized spaces built on social relations established through consanguineous coordinates, which in turn stabilize and sustain rural societies while strengthening attachment to place. Using this theoretical framework and drawing upon the ethnographic fieldwork, this chapter argues that the place-bound relationship in Yanxia supported the rural lifestyle, sustained social relationships and cultural performance, facilitated the construction of individual and collective identities, and imparted to local residents a sense of ownership of their home. In particular, the sense of ownership further attached the residents to the land, which, in turn, strengthened the place-bound relationship and sustained the meaning of home.

    Abstract: This chapter contributes to the discussions on memorability by applying assemblage theoretical thinking to the analysis of memory and by developing the notion of mnemonic affordance. It analyzes Ella Ojala’s family photographs’ affordances in the mediation of the memory of forced migrations and family’s dispersal on multiple scales. First, the chapter explores the photographs’ affordances in mediating memory of dispersed family. Second, it examines the album’s affordances in mediating Ojala’s life story in her memoir novels. Third, by contextualizing Ojala’s literary works vis-à-vis the time of their publication at the turn of 1990s Finland and discussing their recent archiving, the chapter discusses affordances of the family album in mediation of the memory related to Ingrian Finns’ experiences more generally. The chapter indicates some of the potentials of assemblage thinking for conceptualizing memory as processual, malleable, and contingent on various discursive-material and contextual circumstances.

    Abstract: This book explores the role of feminist activists in The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and highlights the progress they have made in mainstreaming gender as a key issue in global climate governance. It is now commonplace for gender to be framed as a political issue in global climate politics within academic scholarship, but there is typically a lack of robust empirical analysis of existing advocacy approaches. Filling this lacuna, Joanna Flavell interrogates the political strategies of the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) in the UNFCCC (The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change). Through a conceptual framework that integrates climate change with intersectional critical inquiry and political practice, Flavell analyses hundreds of historical documents, coupled with interviews and observations from two UNFCCC conferences. This research uncovers a so-far untold story about the history of the UNFCCC that foregrounds gender and feminist advocacy, highlighting the importance of the WGC in shaping dominant narratives of global climate governance through a series of rhetorical and procedural strategies. Overall, the book draws important conclusions around power in global climate governance and opens up new avenues for advancing a feminist green politics.     Abstract: This chapter presents a transdisciplinary, justice-centered pedagogy for cryospheric climes, examining and developing the notion of a clime through a focus on the Alaskan Arctic and the diminishing sea ice. Through stories from the Arctic region and a scientific invocation of sea ice, I argue for the usefulness of a teaching approach where the climate itself becomes teacher, allowing a for natural entanglement of the scientific and the social. Through this radical reorientation, certain key lessons emerge when we listen to the sea ice. These emerge as three interconnected meta-concepts that, along with justice, form the framework of this pedagogy. I explore how these meta-concepts transcend apparent dichotomies of clime and climate, local and global, Indigenous and mainstream, as well as scientific and social. Stories play a key role in facilitating this travel across boundaries. I illustrate this with stories that begin in the human realm and allow us to travel to the scientific, as well as stories that begin with science and reach toward the human. By considering clime as an enactment with multiple players—humans, non-human animals, and elements of weather and landscape—a more-than-human understanding of the climate problem becomes possible.

    Abstract: This chapter sets out to analyse what the representations of urban youth and their language practices in Norwegian media reveals about circulating discourses about diversity and immigration. The digital media archive Atekst (Retriever) was used to build a corpus composed of articles published between 2015 and 2021 in Norwegian print media. The analysis presented here indicates that “Kebabnorsk” (Kebab Norwegian) – a term commonly used to describe the speech styles of urban youths in Norway – is oftentimes mobilized in media debates to construct an axis of differentiation (i.e. us x them) regimented by ideological work where “us” is constructed as a category that encompasses “ethnic Norwegians” who uphold Western values and speak standard Norwegian, whilst “them” describes those who have ethnic minoritized backgrounds, uphold non-Western values, and speak “Kebabnorsk.” Moreover, the notions of coloniality and abyssal line help us to account for the political and historical development of the hierarchization of categorizations such as class, race, and gender from colonial times to the present. Aligned with ongoing efforts into southernizing sociolinguistics, this study expands the scope of existing research by bringing together traditions of critical discourse studies with theories of decoloniality and epistemologies of the South.

    Abstract: At the heart of many studies in media anthropology is an interest in media practices. While practice-oriented approaches have gained momentum as of late, there has been little discussion about how they can include particular “media texts” or “media content” into their research designs. This is especially true for digital content on social media platforms, such as digital images, captions, emojis, hashtags, and so on, which have become popular objects of ethnographic investigation. Though digital content has clear empirical value for ethnographic studies, researchers are unclear about how to approach it conceptually and methodologically. In the following chapter, I argue that digital content itself can be analysed as practice. Using my ethnographic study of digital practices at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe as an example, I show that digital content can be studied as routines in the interplay of human bodies, social and cultural conventions, and the affordances of digital media technologies. My practice approach does not read content as text; rather, it asks how the practices of its creators live on through digital content. This perspective offers a new way of conducting content analysis from an ethnographic perspective and expands the toolbox available for media anthropological research.

    Abstract: The introductory chapter situates the collection within the field of memory studies and the study of Soviet repression and its remembrance. After briefly providing the broad historical context that connects the diverse studies explored by the chapters included in the book, the Introduction reflects on the commemoration of Soviet repression and communism within different memory cultures and the development of memory studies as an academic field. While fashion and beauty have long been integrated into the media industry with tie-in lines, franchise products, and other forms of merchandise, there has been limited study of fans’ relationship to these items and industries. Sartorial Fandom shines a spotlight on the fashion and beauty cultures that undergird fandoms, considering the retailers, branded products, and fan-made objects that serve as forms of identity expression. This collection is invested in the subcultural and mainstream expression of style and in the spaces where the two intersect. Fan culture is, in many respects, an optimal space to situate a study of style because fandom itself is often situated between the subcultural and the mainstream.     Abstract: Federalism as a mode of governance has been a popular response to most conflicts which stemmed from ethnic/language/religious mobilisation. However, the track record of resolving communal or identity conflicts has not always been good, the least of all in Somalia, Sudan and South Sudan. Why the lack of success? Is the federal solution inherently inappropriate for communal accommodation by exacerbating the problem? If not inevitably or inherently inappropriate, is it then a question of poor design? Or is it merely ineffectual implementation of the ‘federal solution’? The chapter argues that federal arrangements in Africa have been the last measure to hold countries together; therefore federalism per se cannot blamed for persistent conflicts. Whether federalism is able to address communal conflicts depends much on constitutional designs dealing with both ethnic issues and federal concepts in general. Where federal solutions have been tried, it is highly centralised, and even then often superficially and reluctantly implemented. To judge the efficacy of federal arrangements in constitutions they first must be implemented. This depends again on a broader embrace of constitutionalism; democracy, separation of powers, limited government, and the rule of law have to become part of political/legal culture of a country.

    Abstract: This book focuses on the development of bilateral Jewish-Muslim relations in London and Amsterdam since the late-1980s.     Abstract: This chapter studies the ways in which family members draw on their mediational repertoires to interact with one another near and far in the light of theories of translocality (Conradson & McKay 2007, Kytölä 2016), family discourse practices (Tannen et al. 2007) and language and emotions (Pavlenko 2004, Dewaele 2010). Through the analysis of digital power and connection manoeuvres (cf. Kendall 2006, Tannen 2006, Tannen et al. 2007) and morality practices (Ochs & Kremer-Sadlik 2007), the chapter shows how their interactional practices differ between local and transnational digital connectivity as well as between regular and occasional family contacts. The expressions of affection in these mediated interactions are examined to identify how they differ by the various types of local to global connectivity in the data and to conclude on how the diversity of linguistic repertoires becomes a resource to articulate emotions between adults, parents and their children.

    Abstract: This book investigates the experiences of second- and third-generation Italians living in South Africa, exploring how nostalgia for Italy influences their sense of identity and belonging. The Italian community in South Africa is a unique diaspora, with a complex history, including roots in Italian colonial activities in Africa, and in World War II. This book looks at how the descendants of these early migrants take pride in being Italian and value the Italian language. They also ascribe much importance to their family roots, and have often created a romanticized image of Italy, mostly based on childhood vacation visits. The longing for an imaginary idealized version of Italy is closely linked to their wider search for a sense of identity and belonging against the backdrop of South African society, currently still grappling with its own multicultural identity. Interdisciplinary by design, this book draws on insights from both cultural studies and psychology in order to shine a light on an important and under-studied diasporic community. The book will be of interest to scholars from across migration studies and the Humanities in general.     Abstract: Mediterranean in Dis/order reveals the connection between space and politics by examining the role that space has played in insurgencies, conflicts, uprisings, and mobilities in the Mediterranean region.     Abstract: In pre-Soviet and early Soviet times, the northern areas of East Siberia and the Russian Far East that today are crossed by the Baikal-Amur Mainline were more or less exclusively the domain of semi-nomadic Evenki reindeer herders and rarely traversed by Russian or other European travelers. The decision to build a railroad line through this region during the 1970s and 1980s could not but have tremendous social, demographic, and ecological impacts. The specific impacts of the BAM cannot be understood, however, without considering the political and economic environments in which construction took place. This chapter is based on archival materials and interviews collected during multiple fieldwork visits during the 2010s, with a focus on the city of Tynda, the “capital” of the BAM, as well as the city Severobaikal’sk and the town of Novaia Chara along the railroad, and the Indigenous villages of Pervomaiskoe and Chapo-Ologo located not far from the BAM. The chapter’s aim is to provide tentative answers to the title question and to explore the opportunities and constraints, or “affordances,” of infrastructure as an agent of change.
