    Abstract: Klappentext: Wie hingen koloniale Herrschaft, Wirtschaft und hanseatisches Unternehmertum im Deutschen Kolonialreich zusammen? Dieser Frage geht der Historiker Kim Sebastian Todzi auf den Grund und untersucht dazu den Aufstieg und Fall des Hamburger Woermann-Konzerns. Kaum ein Unternehmen ist mit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft in West- und Südwestafrika über eine so lange Zeit so eng verbunden wie dieser Konzern, der aus dem 1837 von Carl Woermann gegründeten Handelshaus C. Woermann hervorging.Todzi zeigt in seiner empirisch gesättigten und analytisch differenzierten Arbeit, die neuere Kolonialgeschichte, postkoloniale Ansätze und Unternehmensgeschichte produktiv verbindet, welche Rolle der Woermann-Konzern bei der Kolonisierung Kameruns spielte, wie er sich in einer quasi symbiotischen Beziehung mit der deutschen Kolonialherrschaft entwickelte - und wie er während des Völkermordes an den Herero und Nama (1904-1908) die Truppentransporte von Hamburg nach Deutsch-Südwestafrika organisierte.

    Abstract: Zugang zu Land ist begehrt und umkämpft. Das verdeutlichen Konflikte, die weltweit im Zusammenhang mit land grabbing auftreten. Wie aber lassen sich Entstehung und Verlauf dieser Konflikte erklären? Dieser Frage nähert sich Sarah Kirst in einer Fallstudie zu zwei Konflikten um Zugang zu Land im Kontext der Umsetzung agrarindustrieller Vorhaben in Ghana. Aus machtkritischer Perspektive beleuchtet sie die Rolle traditioneller Autoritäten, die zentrale Akteur*innen in diesen Konflikten sind. Ihre Analyse entschlüsselt die Bedeutung unterschiedlicher Machtformen für Konfliktentstehung und -verlauf und zeigt soziale Ungleichheitsverhältnisse im Kontext von land grabbing auf

    Abstract: The global phenomenon of political consumerism is known through such diverse manifestations as corporate boycotts, increased preferences for organic and fair-trade products, and lifestyle choices such as veganism. It has also become an area of increasing research across a variety of disciplines. Political consumerism usesconsumer power to change institutional or market practices that are found ethically, environmentally, or politically objectionable. Through such actions, the goods offered on the consumer market are problematized and politicized. Distinctions between consumers and citizens and between the economy and politics collapse. The Oxford Handbook of Political Consumerism offers the first comprehensive theoretical and comparative overview of the ways in which the market becomes a political arena. It maps the four major forms of political consumerism: boycotting, buycotting (spending to show support), lifestyle politics, and discursive actions, such as culture jamming. Chapters by leading scholars examine political consumerism in different locations and industry sectors, and in consideration of environmental and human rights problems, political events, and the ethics of production and manufacturing practices. This volume offers a thorough exploration of the phenomenon and its myriad dilemmas, involving religion, race, nationalism, gender relations, animals, and our common future. Moreover, the Handbook takes stock of political consumerism's effectiveness in solving complex global problems and its use to both promote and impede democracy.

    Abstract: In diesem Kompendium führen 40 Politik- und Wirtschaftswissenschaftler aus insgesamt 25 Hochschulen gemeinsam in die wichtigsten Bereiche der Politischen Ökonomie ein und beleuchten die verschiedenen Teilbereiche jeweils aus Sicht beider Disziplinen. Damit wird in diesem Handbuch erstmals ein explizit integrativer Ansatz verfolgt. Im ersten Teil geben die interdisziplinären Autorenteams einen Überblick über grundlegende Frage- und Problemstellungen, die das Nachdenken über Politik und Wirtschaft sowie insbesondere die Reflexion über das Zusammenspiel dieser beiden Gesellschaftsbereiche seit Jahrhunderten geprägt haben. Der zweite Teil bietet eine Einführung in zentrale Aufgabenbereiche der Wirtschaftspolitik, während im dritten Teil die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen den beteiligten Fachdisziplinen bei der Analyse verschiedener Politikfelder aufgezeigt werden.     Abstract: Historically, entrepreneurs have always played a central role in the development of nation states. Aside from rentier states, which depend extensively on the availability of mineral resource rents, most economically prosperous nations in the world have strong, innovative and competitive business enterprises and entrepreneurs as the bedrock of their economic development and prosperity. It was arguably because of the above historical fact that the World Bank in 1989 declared that entrepreneurs will play a central role in transforming African economies. Chapters in this book contribute to our understanding of the theory, structure and practice of entrepreneurship in diverse African countries.     Abstract: An account of all the new and surprising evidence now available for the beginnings of the earliest civilizations that contradict the standard narrative. Why did humans abandon hunting and gathering for sedentary communities dependent on livestock and cereal grains, and governed by precursors of today's states? Most people believe that plant and animal domestication allowed humans, finally, to settle down and form agricultural villages, towns, and states, which made possible civilization, law, public order, and a presumably secure way of living. But archaeological and historical evidence challenges this narrative. The first agrarian states, says James C. Scott, were born of accumulations of domestications: first fire, then plants, livestock, subjects of the state, captives, and finally women in the patriarchal family-all of which can be viewed as a way of gaining control over reproduction. Scott explores why we avoided sedentism and plow agriculture, the advantages of mobile subsistence, the unforeseeable disease epidemics arising from crowding plants, animals, and grain, and why all early states are based on millets and cereal grains and unfree labor. He also discusses the "barbarians" who long evaded state control, as a way of understanding continuing tension between states and nonsubject peoples

    Abstract: Konstantin Kehl geht der Frage nach, weshalb es trotz Reformbedarfs und langjähriger Debatten bisher nicht gelungen ist, die Versorgungsstrukturen für pflege- und unterstützungsbedürftige Menschen im Sinne einer sozialinvestiven Politik weiterzuentwickeln, die die Vereinbarkeit von Pflege und Beruf verbessert und zivilgesellschaftliche Strukturen fördert. Der Autor fokussiert die Fähigkeiten von Koalitionen öffentlicher und privater Akteure zur Einflussnahme auf kollektiv bindende Entscheidungen in der Verhandlungsdemokratie und untersucht zwei mustergültige Reformen sozialinvestiver Pflegepolitik.     Abstract: In 2017 it will be Australia's turn to chair the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KP), an international organisation set up to regulate the trade in diamonds. Diamonds are a symbol of love, purchased to celebrate marriage, and it is therefore deeply ironic that the diamond trade has become linked with warfare and human rights violations committed in African producer countries such as Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo and, more recently, Zimbabwe and Angola. In their quest for diamonds, or by using diamonds to purchase weapons, armed groups in these countries have engaged in recruiting child soldiers, amputating limbs, and committing rape and murder. In response to the problem, the international community, non-governmental organisations and key industry players such as De Beers combined forces to create the Kimberley Process in 2002. The KP uses an export certificate system to distinguish the legitimate rough diamond trade from so-called 'blood diamonds', which are also known as 'conflict diamonds'. This book considers the extent to which the KP, supported by other agencies at the international and national levels, has been effective in achieving its mandate. In so doing, it presents an original model derived from the domain of regulatory theory, the Dual Networked Pyramid, as a means of describing the operation of the system and suggesting possible improvements that might be made to it

Diamonds are a symbol of love, purchased to celebrate marriage, and it is therefore deeply ironic that the diamond trade has become linked with warfare and human rights violations committed in African producer countries such as Sierra Leone, the Democratic Republic of Congo and, more recently, Zimbabwe and Angola. In their quest for diamonds, or by using diamonds to purchase weapons, armed groups in these countries have engaged in recruiting child soldiers, amputating limbs, and committing rape and murder. In response to the problem, the international community, non-governmental organisations and key industry players such as De Beers combined forces to create the Kimberley Process in 2002. The KP uses an export certificate system to distinguish the legitimate rough diamond trade from so-called 'blood diamonds', which are also known as 'conflict diamonds'. This book considers the extent to which the KP, supported by other agencies at the international and national levels, has been effective in achieving its mandate. In so doing, it presents an original model derived from the domain of regulatory theory, the Dual Networked Pyramid, as a means of describing the operation of the system and suggesting possible improvements that might be made to it

    Abstract: In recent years states across the world have boosted their legal and institutional capacity to deport noncitizens residing on their territory, including failed asylum seekers, “illegal” migrants, and convicted criminals. Scholars have analyzed this development primarily through the lens of immigration control. Deportation has been viewed as one amongst a range of measures designed to control entrance, distinguished primarily by the fact that it is exercised inside the territory of the state. But deportation also has broader social and political effects. It provides a powerful way through which the state reminds noncitizens that their presence in the polity is contingent upon acceptable behavior. Furthermore, in liberal democratic states immunity from deportation is one of the key privileges that citizens enjoy that distinguishes them from permanent residents. This book examines the historical, institutional and social dimensions of the relationship between deportation and citizenship in liberal democracies. Contributions also include analysis of the formal and informal functions of administrative immigration detention, and the role of the European Parliament in the area of irregular immigration and borders. The book also develops an analytical framework that identifies and critically appraises grassroots and sub national responses to migration policy in liberal democratic societies, and considers how groups form after deportation and the employment of citizenship in this particular context, making it of interest to scholars and international policy makers alike.

    Abstract: Ist "Entwicklungshilfe" noch zeitgemäß? Die Legitimation der internationalen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit wird von vielen Kritikern in Frage gestellt. Diese Kritik wird von berechtigten Zweifeln getragen, aber auch von Vorurteilen und Missverständnissen. Tatsächlich steht die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit vor neuen Herausforderungen, für die sie in den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts weder institutionell noch instrumentell konzipiert wurde. In einer zunehmend dynamischeren und heterogeneren Akteurskonstellation sieht sich die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit mit den Folgen des Klimawandels, mit Terrorismus und zerfallenden Staaten konfrontiert. Dieses Buch bietet einen problemorientierten Überblick über den Status quo der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit auf der Akteursebene, den Zielen und Instrumenten sowie über notwendige Veränderungen. Als einführendes Lehrbuch geschrieben, ist es für Entwicklungsökonomen, Politikwissenschaftler und Praktiker der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit gleichermaßen interessant.     Abstract: The biological sciences are adding value to a host of products and services, producing what some have labelled the “bioeconomy” and offering the potential to make major socio-economic contributions in OECD countries. Using quantitative analyses of data on development pipelines and R&D expenditures from private and public databases, this book estimates biotechnological developments to 2015. Moving to a broader institutional view, it also looks at the roles of R&D funding, human resources, intellectual property, and regulation in the bioeconomy, as well as at possible developments that could influence emerging business models to create scenarios to 2030. These scenarios are included to stimulate reflection on the interplay between policy choices and technological advances in shaping the bioeconomy. Finally, the book explores policy options to support the social, environmental and economic benefits of a bioeconomy.

    Abstract: The current economic situation has obliged the international donor community to reexamine its stance on the conditionality of development assistance. This study evaluates which controversies persist with respect to aid conditionality, how successful donors have been in stemming the rising tide of aid conditionality of the 1980s and 1990s, and whether the donor community practices what it preaches regarding the allocation of aid based on governance and development criteria. Above all, the report considers how the financial crisis has rendered it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional conditionality frameworks. Strategies for reducing the number of aid conditionalities and for enhancing recipient ownership of aid policies are proposed in light of the unsustainability of existing frameworks.--Publisher's description.
