Abstract: This chapter focuses on Obrazy Italii, the best known work by Pavel Muratov, a Russian writer, journalist, critic and art historian. This work is a diary recounting the journey to Italy of the author at the beginning of the twentieth century; nowadays it is considered a classic text that provides a testimony on the way Italian art was perceived in Russia. Though it is well-known in Russia, this work has only recently received some attention in Italy following its recent translation. This chapter contains detailed and original analyses that compare Muratov’s translations with those found in Russian dictionaries written in the same period. These concern a selection of lemmas in art and architecture and the names of artists. This chapter shows that the language employed in this work cannot be defined as either specialised or standard, but as a mixture between the two

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the conceptual/linguistic metaphorical representations of the notion of ‘art’ in Vasari’s Le Vite. It presents a case study of select concordances for «arte» extracted from the Italian LBC corpus, and a cross-linguistic comparison with the same segments taken from two English translations (de Vere 1912-1915 and Bondanella, Bondanella 1991). Firstly, six main metaphor categories are identified in the concordances from Le Vite. Two small parallel corpora are subsequently built, collecting the ‘metaphorical’ concordances from Le Vite and their corresponding translations, and analysed to assess if and how the original metaphors were transferred to the English texts. While both English translations maintain more than half of the original metaphorical occurrences, results also highlight interesting differences between the translators’ approaches. Patterns from quantitative and qualitative investigation are discussed through select examples, considering both the functions of the original metaphorical categories and the effects of the translators’ choices on their rendition. Finally, remarks are made about the contribution of (parallel) corpus techniques to metaphor translation analysis, as emerging from this case study

Abstract: The Vocabulario de Términos de Arte (Vocabulary of Art Terms) is the most important lexicographic work about art history published in Spain in the 19th century. Following his intention to spread knowledge about the lexis of art, José Ramón Mélida published this work after translating and adapting for the Spanish audience Jules Adeline’s Lexique des terms d’art (Lexicon of art terms). This chapter employs descriptive-contrastive methodologies to analyse Mélida’s translation strategies, his interventions on the source text as well as neologisms

Abstract: This chapter presents a new tun in the research project Multilingual Cultural Heritage Lexicon that consists in extending the LBC French corpus through a sub-corpus on Bologna and the Emilia-Romagna region (BER). After presenting the two projects connected with the LBC corpus (UniCittà 2019-2021 and UniVOCittà – ongoing), Zotti presents the BER sub-corpus from a quantitative and qualitative point of view reflecting on its role ans its complementarity for the description of the artistic terminology in the LBC comparable monolingual corpus. Zotti concludes by showcasing the applications and results of the corpus-driven approach and its potential for inferring linguistic knowledge when it comes to (diastratic and diatopic) synonymy, suggesting new strategies for the translation of cultural-specific items

Abstract: This work reports on an ongoing Italian-English translation project that began in 2018. This project aims at compiling a learner corpus and involves a Government Department as client and a selected group of MA students as translators. Texts to be translated focus on cultural heritage and are targeted to the international tourism market. This chapter centers on a sub-corpus that focuses on churches and palaces of the House of the Estense. This chapter draws attention to the target texts of our corpus. Starting from the extraction of specific terms in the source texts, target texts are analysed quantitatively and qualitatively in order to identify translation strategies and frequent mistakes with the aim of contributing to the translation of art and architecture for heritage tourism

Abstract: This chapter takes into consideration two Russian translations of the Vita of Cimabue. One of these presents a selection from Le Vite de’ più eccellenti pittori, scultori, e architettori by Giorgio Vasari and is dated 1933; the other is the first complete Russian translation of Vasari’s Vite published between 1956 and 1971. The comparison of these two translations focuses on morphological, lexical and syntactical aspects of the original version. Particular attention is devoted to the translation of inter-phrasal and intra-phrasal connectors, of the coniunctio relativa and of gerunds. The chapter also reflects on the translation of Latin inscriptions, toponyms and proper nouns

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the role of corpora, in particular the LBC corpus (Lessico dei Beni Culturali), in the training of (future) translators. First, a variety of teaching methodologies, such as «task», «Learners’ Bilingual Lexicography/Terminography», «Corpus-Based/ Data-Driven Learning», and «strategic competence» will be re-examined, taking into account the use of corpora at all stages of translators’ training. The article will then illustrate a case study involving two translation classes focusing on architecture and art history (including Gothic and Renaissance art). These have led to the writing of a bilingual glossary (Portuguese-French and French-Portuguese), a collaborative and ongoing project for students in translation

Abstract: This chapter presents the results of a qualitative contrastive analysis of the Italian and Spanish terminology of medieval and Renaissance architecture. The study focuses on a corpus of Italian texts on the castles of the House of Este published on the TourER website, a project for the promotion of the architectural and landscape heritage of the Emilia-Romagna region. The chapter focuses attention on the most frequent multiword terms and expressions and a selection of concordances extracted from a learner aligned parallel corpus of Italian-Spanish translation. This chapter investigates translation strategies adopted in relation to the typology of texts and their potential readership

Abstract: The volume offers a new perspective for the study of the mendicant orders between the 13th and 14th centuries through the example of the Servites in central and northern Italy. The study, despite considering a so-called ‘minor’ order, has made it possible to analyse two essential issues for Western Europe’s late medieval history. The first concerns the transformations of religiosity between the 13th and 14th which saw the prominence of new social classes and institutions. The second concerns the urban expansion, the economic growth and the political-institutional and socio-cultural changes that characterised the cities of the time. The Servites were expression and later fine interpreters of these processes, becoming actors who were anything but marginal in the social context of late medieval Italy

Abstract: This chapter focuses on the German translations of La Vita of Raffaello by Vasari. Ballestracci focuses her attention on translations into German of the word «disegno», on its complex and multifaceted meanings and its crucial role in Vasari’s work. After presenting all the occurrences of the word forms from the lemma «disegn-», Ballestracci analyses the instances in which «disegn-» was not translated directly as «Zeichnung» in two different target texts. Results of this study confirm the fascinating hypothesis by which the translations of a polysemous term cause the surfacing of meanings in the target text that were hidden in the source text and that, in this particular case, carry key aspects of Vasari’s thought

Abstract: The Introduction presents the chronological evolution of the practices employed in the translation of the language of cultural heritage. All the Chapters in this volume share close ties with the objectives of the research project «Multilingual Cultural Heritage Lexicon» and follow three trajectories: 1. The translations of Vasari as primary sources for the origins of the lexicon of the arts in Europe 2. Considerations on translation praxis and teaching of different text types of cultural heritage 3. The latest developments in the compilation and use of translational corpora in relation to local heritage sites. Through a diachronic and a synchronic perspective, all chapters contribute to the existing literature on Corpus-based Translation Studies (CTS) of the language of cultural heritage

Abstract: "Bodies of tow and paraffin" is the phrase used by Georges Braque, pioneer with Picasso of Cubism, to describe the alarm that he felt at his first sight of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon when he paid Picasso a visit as he was painting it in the Bateau Lavoir in 1907. This sums up well the reactions the work produced among the friends of the Spanish painter who first saw it. This chapter summarises these first reactions of horror, disgust and disappointment felt among Picasso's friends and acquaintances. It also provides a host of comments and quotes made by Picasso himself, remarkable for their contradictions and high dosages of irony

Abstract: Steinberg marked a gamechanger in the understanding of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The arguments with which Steinberg fought the limits of the formalist critics appear to have become unchallengeable from the 1960s on, the moment that Art History began to undergo a colossal transformation. Steinberg opened the doors wide to new critical focus on Modern Art. Among the doors he opened, were the biographical and psychological considerations about Les Demoiselles. This chapter presents a brief summary of the psychobiographic and contextualist interpretations of the work, including one of the most important by William Rubin who saw Les Demoiselles as a reflection of Picasso's psychosexual problems and presented unpublished documentation that would be of vital importance for future criticism and historiography

Abstract: Another way of showing interpretations of Picasso's Demoiselles is to heed the replicas, copies, pictorial or artistic versions made by contemporary artists. This chapter presents the artistic versions of the work done by artists at the end of the 20th and start of the 21st century. It begins the pop replicas by Caulfield or Equipo Crónico and the appropriationists like Richard Prince or Mark Bidlo. And continuing with those done by feminist or Afroamerican artists like Faith Ringgold or the queer versions of Rafael Agredano. Finally it deals with the geographical and culturally situated critical proposals of Francis Alÿs or Rogelio López Cuenca/Elo Vega

Abstract: The first solid interpretation of the damsels to make a mark was delivered from formalist criteria. Thus, as far as was possible the content of the work was disregarded, studying only in great detail all its pictorial or purely plastic values that proclaimed the great avant-guard revolution: the substitution of the Renaissance visual order with the modern visual order. From this point of view the Demoiselles appear as the seed of one of the most relevant avant-guard movements -Cubism. This chapter deals with the origin and how the formalist version shaped the painting -and Modern Art itself (from the 1920s until approximately the 1960s)

Abstract: In his thesis on Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, Steinberg postulated the fundamental role of the spectator (object of the appealing gazes of the five young nudes in the painting) as the catalyst of the meanings in the painting. From then on new critical perspectives would speculate about this subject, targeted by the personages in the painting, who bears so much responsibility in articulating the interpretation of the scene. Doubts were raised about the universal character of the gaze, the universal character of the receptor of the work of art and of Modern Art. From the end of the 20th century and activated by the most recent methodological approaches such as feminism and post-colonialism, new critical voices provoked the breaching of the dominating gaze. This chapter broaches the interpretations of this paradigmatic work of Modern Art made by feminist and post-colonial and subaltern theories, questioning the very proposals of Modernism. Feminism shows how gender conditioning affects the reception of a work of art. And allied with this, post-colonialism and subaltern theory begin to seriously question the way historiography has considered, or not, the relevance of Art négre in the avant-guard eclosion

Abstract: In the 1960s and 1970s this formalist version seen in the previous chapter began to show signs of fatigue. Some critics and art historians began to show interest in the personages on stage in Les Demoiselles. Early on John Nash linked the damsel squatting at lower right of the canvas with the myth of Medusa. Leo Steinberg immediately formulated a series of questions that constituted a direct attack against the formalist version. Why should we examine a painting that presented five naked prostitutes, all gazing fixedly at the viewer, merely from the formalist perspective? The time had come to take into account the content of the painting and consequently all of modern art which had been restricted by the prevailing formalism. This chapter tells how the formalist arguments were refuted and cleared the way for the iconological studies that placed the powerful sexual content in the foreground. The person mainly responsible for this was Leo Steinberg who sparked off an authentic revolution on the way to deal with this work and Modernism as a whole

Abstract: The book meticulously analyses the history of the critical reception of avantguard art through the interpretations received by one of its greatest emblems, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon by Picasso, 1907. Since Les Demoiselles has been considered over this century the true paradigm of Modern Art, this book is, fundamentally, a sort of synthesis of the discourses about Modernism from formalism, iconology, Leo Steinberg's 'Other Criteria', sociological, the biographical and psychoanalytical theses, cultural and historicist and lastly, the impact of post-structuralism and the feminist, post-colonialist and transnational interpretations. The final chapter deals with the artistic versions of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon made by artists. It is an essay on the different versions and identities of Modern Art and Modernism that have been produced throughout the last century

Abstract: Journalism invented the interview, a tool to investigate the lives of writers. This indiscretion triggers the authors' reaction: a new literary genre, the imagined interview, becomes a shield to protect their own intimacy as wells as a tactic to overturn the press' spotlight, primarily against the interviewers. Pretending to be like them, the authors will also be able to talk to the ghosts of our imagination. All their interlocutors become characters shaped by irony, satire, self-representation. Through the creative variations of the imagined interview and across different media (publishing, radio, television, digital devices), this book shows how the media context, with its laws and conflicts, is the scene of writers' counterattack-a battle fought by the double-edged sword of journalistic imitation and fictional invention

Abstract: Narrative has been the subject of theoretical reflection and empirical investigation since Aristotle’s Poetics. However, with the turn of the millennium, we are witnessing a real narrative turn in the humanities and social sciences. This volume aims to provide an overview of recent developments in the theoretical analysis of narrative, offering the reader a series of contributions that are organized along the following three theoretical-disciplinary axes: theories of narrative at the intersection of cognitive, evolutionary, and computational approaches; narrative theory and cognitive neuroscience; and narrative and storytelling as socio-communicative phenomena

Abstract: This volume brings together a selection of essays on Claudio Magris' work, aiming to enrich critical debate with a specific focus on interdisciplinary dimension and continuous dialogue with the main European literary traditions. The outcome is an overall study on Magris' narrative, essayistic and theatrical production, trying to fix his plural and prismatic identity: from the narration of places to an unavoidable ideological tension; from philosophical alphabets to the weight of History; from Myth's remediation to the abroad reception; from hypotext filigree to real case studies. According to a diachronic perspective, they focus attention on Magris' works, such as Microcosmi, Alla cieca, Non luogo a procedere and Tempo curvo a Krems

Abstract: Adelia Noferi (1922-2014) was one the greatest scholars of Petrarch, Bruno, and D'Annunzio and twentieth-century poetry, as well as one of the most refined theorists of the twentieth century and its poetics. This book collects previously unpublished texts, some of which arose from the courses that Noferi taught at university; they reflect with a wealth of doctrine and suggestions on poetry and criticism through Petrarchan readings and an adventurous journey through the topoi of the forest in literature. From the locus amoenus to the labyrinth, the investigation takes place at a structural, formal, symbolic and cultural level and retraces forms and junctions of the imagination through exemplary texts (from Dante to Bigongiari and Zanzotto). The second section, enriched by an iconographic apparatus, collects profiles and testimonies in multiple voices, a biography between generations, and a complete bibliography

Con un'antologia di testi al femminile investigates the rhetoric of 'vision' at a theoretical, literary and linguistic level: through the analysis of a corpus of important authors of the twentieth century - Campo, Guidacci, Virgillito, Zambrano and Weil - it traces the routes of a new resemantization of some symbols from the mystical tradition. After a theoretical reflection on the most significant aspects of philosophical and poetic itineraries, the volume philologically analyzes the fundamental aspects of this new alphabet of ecstasy to arrive at the construction of a repertoire of symbols, intended as a mapping of presences and recurrences, analyzed in their aspects of continuity, redesign and innovation with respect to the medieval and modern background

Abstract: Giulia is a maiden abandoned at the birth in Florence of Francesco I dei Medici and Bianca Cappello, who has already been the subject of historical research and some re-elaboration in literary and cinematographic terms. Thanks to the richness of the sources now found, a completely new and exhaustive biography of this 16th century woman is presented, with an unpublished version of her personality and history. Florence, the Casentino and the Valdinievole are the places of her life, which fully reflects the condition of women in her era, faced by Giulia with courage and determination. The discourse develops on two intertwined planes, that of historical analysis and that of its narrative integration, with the hypothetical reconstruction of the areas left in the shadows. This book enters by right into historiographical traditions now widely codified and into a literary tradition defined by Giacomo Debenedetti as 'historiography of interiority'

Abstract: The graphic novel is one of the most suggestive and successful semiotic phenomena. This collection of essays focuses on the interrelations of image and text, and how they are substantiated and thematized by graphic novels. The volume gathers together twelve essays and follows a twofold structure: a historical and theoretical one, providing different and complementary approaches to the topic, from neurocognitive narratology to Digital Humanities; in the second part of the volume several case studies are discussed, based on key examples as shown by the following authors and their work: from Vanna Vinci and Lorenza Natarella, to Gipi, Zerocalcare and Manuel Fior; from Dino Buzzati to Hugo Pratt and Pazienza; from Pablo Echaurren to the Homeric epics' comics remediation

Abstract: The murder of Emanuele Notarbartolo, former director of the Banco di Palermo, at the hands of the Sicilian Mafia in 1893 represents a controversial and obscure event in Italian history. There were three trials (Milan, Bologna, Florence), which also involved a Sicilian deputy: Raffaele Palizzolo. Anna Franchi's documentation work takes place in the Assize court of Florence: she attended every hearing, and observed relentlessly both the 'Mafia' phenomenon and the actual theatre of testimonies, confessions, retractions and false tracks characterising the trial in Florence (1903-1904). It was possible to widely integrate Franchi's account after the discovery of the entire folder relating to the process in the State Archives of Florence: about 1500 handwritten pages by the various chancellors dealing with the trial. The trial ended in a general acquittal for principals and executors for lack of evidence. For some, Sicily's honour was safe, but for many others, the truth was forever covered up

Abstract: Scarti, tracce e frammenti: controarchivio e memoria dell'umano. Literature and art, increasingly interested in the dark side of production, now appear as a reservoir of fragments and waste of all sorts. The attraction towards scraps, conceived as anti-goods, testifies the existence of a parallel world where the myths of growth and productivity show their tragic face. Through different textualities and media, waste emerges as a testimony of a subversive marginality from which unexpected perspectives, which can undermine the established order, arise. The volume, using the image of waste, offers a hidden or marginalized counter history, which however 'returns' overbearingly in order to give contemporaneity its shapeless substance

Abstract: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix

Abstract: The two volumes are dedicated to Alessandra Contini Bonacossi by the Association "Archivio per la memoria e la scrittura delle donne", which bears her name since 2007. They include a biographical profile, enriched by the list of her numerous publications, followed by thirty-two essays written by scholars who shared with her ideals and cultural interests of research and study and writings of her family members who make up the "family album". The collection, in addition to the variety of issues addressed in a wide chronological span - with essays ranging from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age - mainly focuses on the historiographical and interpretative reflection on documentary, iconographic, literary sources and themes such as Medici diplomacy, the Lorraine age, and gender history, to which Alessandra made important contributions with her studies

Abstract: This book edited by Dario Collini is a collection of the work by several young researchers (belonging to the University of Florence's research groups "GREM" and "NGEM"), who have studied the 17,000 letters belonging to the of the Macrì Association under Anna Dolfi's guidance. The aim of this book is to offer an extraordinary work tool to those who are interested in Hermeticism, literary criticism and poetry of the 20th century in Italy. The flashes coming from these letters, be them shadows from the bottom or "intermittent lights", are signs of the human genesis of culture, because they retain traces of what is linked to everyday life, and contributes to the construction of the '"great" history and of the intellectual and political planning alongside it. Therefore readings, books, magazines, collaborations, friendships, resentments, travels, literary and private passions emerge from these documents, so as to give voice to an era and its protagonists

Abstract: This volume reconstructs the birth and evolution of the Italian literary history in France and England during the 19th century. In the French context, a comparative reading of the works by Pierre-Louis Ginguené and Jean Charles Léonard Simonde de Sismondi confirms that the subject had already reached its maturity at the beginning of the century. On the other hand, in England, the path leading from Ugo Foscolo to John Addington Symonds passes through multiple genres and sources, including collections of biographies, anthologies of translations, travel books, histories of individual literary genres, histories from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. At the end of this path, a software pipeline is tested and developed with the aim of expanding the analysis through the computational tools of the Digital Humanities

Abstract: "A humanity that forgets Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Mauthausen, I cannot accept it. I write for us to remember": this was Giorgio Bassani's answer to anyone who asked him about the origin of his writing. Guided by these words, Anna Dolfi has woven a fabric of suggestions that have pushed Italian and foreign scholars and even some protagonists to reflect on narrators, poets, essayists, historians, philosophers, publishers, artists, who have been induced by the history of a difficult affiliation to a sort of fatal, testimonial moral duty. The result was a book of great novelty for style and reading proposals which, starting from the ancient Jewish tradition, from legends relived in a political and libertarian key, after the Romanticism and the German 19th Century, brings to the fore the modern voices of European and North American literature/culture, and of the Yiddish and Eastern tradition. The names of the great Jewish intellectuals of Central Europe are recurring: Canetti, Schulz, Döblin, Antelme, Wiesel, Sebald, Oz, Grossman, Nelly Sachs, Irène Némirovsky..., among the Italians those of Loria, Natalia Ginzburg, Giacomo Debenedetti, Cesare Segre..., but especially Giorgio Bassani and Primo Levi who, in order to keep the memory of the tragedy of persecution and the Shoah, have chosen to place their entire work "entre la vie et la mort". Eventually, all this leads to remembering how the duty to testify is linked to the affection and work of mourning, to the lasting effect of an immediate wound that nourishes the connection between the truth of what happened and what one might call the "truth of creation", le vrai du roman

Abstract: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other - stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity - to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed - in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality - in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? The volume, conceived and edited by Nicola Turi, while tracing the individual path of known and lesser-known authors, in relation to the main theme of the book, both Italian and not (from Leopardi to Zanzotto, from Gadda to Calvino, from Salsa to Dessí, from Luzi and Fenoglio to Leavitt, Eisner and Celestini), also stimulates and elaborates a profound reflection on the bewilderment and natural attraction of the artistic gesture (from time to time in the name of fierce irony, desperate incredulity, the elegiac testimony) for evil, pain, the martial distortion of the human, social and political context

Abstract: What is the common aspect linking the studies of this volume, which take into account very different authors such as Conte, Palazzeschi, Zanzotto, Caproni, Rosselli, Biagini, some crespuscolar poets, Leopardi, Annovi, Giuliani, and even some twentieth-century translations of R.M. Rilke? They share the belief that the poetic word - which etymologically has "creative" powers - generates cognitive perspectives altering our perception of the world. Reading poetry does not have an effect confined to the page and to the moment, but affects our relationship with reality, changes it and enriches it in an often unsuspected and surprising way. In this collection, the authors try to bring out a sort of epistemology of poetry, in order to clarify how it can contribute to illuminating our experience of the world and of ourselves. The reader is then invited to look beyond the boundaries traditionally established by the various disciplines, in the direction of mutual contamination and openness to innovative and unprecedented suggestions

Abstract: The volume explores the work of two classic authors such as Capuana and Verga under the lens of the postcolonial perspective, accepting the thesis of the Italian unification process as an internal colonisation process. The author investigates the effects of colonisation on the representation of the Sicilian rural life, highlighting areas of ambiguity and hybridism in the writings of Capuana and Verga. The two writers, living between the colonised world and the colonising world, sometimes take part in the realisation of the hegemonic national discourse, sometimes create counter-discourses, in a never definitive alternation that makes the texts of the two Veristi rich and fascinating

Abstract: Between Luigi Meneghello's writing and the natural world there is an implicit yet profound bound, destined to reverberate in the folds of the text, giving rise to unprecedented and transversal readings. And eco-criticism, in this case, far from being but a privileged starting point, it also takes on the task of reflecting more deeply on what, on balance, are the salient features of the eco-writer Meneghello: from th environmental emergency, to the semantics of places; from the conception of the text as an 'ecosystem', to stories about things and matter; and then, the second part of the volume deals with the story of the animal kingdom, aimed at redefining the value structure of theHomo sapiens and its place in this narrated biosphere

Abstract: In this book, Francesca Nencioni uses semantics to reconstruct, with skill and intelligence, the 'characters' and 'specimens' of the Hermetic prose (Parronchi, I giorni sensibili; Luzi, Biografia e Ebe; Bigongiari, La donna miriade; Gatto, La sposa bambina), proposing a new way of reading the works which marked the early Hermetic period in Florence. Using stylistic tools, analysis of language, rhythm and melody, and a comparative perspective shifting continuously among the genres, the author gives new semantics to the category of absence (through female metamorphosis, transience and death), and explores the coordinates of time (the hours of day, the movements of stars and planets, the alternation of seasons) and space (the four elements, the beloved places and the real landscapes), then combines synchronic investigation with an excursus on the study of semantic variables in the two editions of Biografia e Ebe and La sposa bambina

Abstract: Studi per Enza Biagini ("Studies for Enza Biagini") collects essays on literary theory or comparative studies, analysing a single or multiple literatures, translations, poems, stories and comics. The result is a text of pleasant and agile reading. Generations of scholars intersect, who do not belong to any academic hierarchy, and who have shared over the decades the long history and the many fields of research of Enza Biagini, also revealing the methodological rigour and the almost boundless openness that has characterized her school. At the heart of the volume is the theory of literature with its concepts and tools of analysis belonging to the tradition of rhetoric, not to be understood here as the taxonomy of tropes and figures, but as the sum of living instances (linguistic, literary, philosophical, semiotic, ideological) which are the bearers of fundamental questions

Abstract: Retracing Dessí's collaboration in the magazines "L'Orto", "Primato" and "Cronache" directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer's artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime

Facebook was created to share thoughts, ideas, sensations and anything mild and fleeting; certainly not for the dissemination of scientific and academic knowledge. On the contrary... by combining the obligatory conciseness of a post, the taste for fantasy at the service of the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and the socialization of such a widespread means of communication, there is a metamorphosis turning the irreversible, ineffable volatility of a social network into the lapidary and realistic fixity of this book of digital cameos, dedicated to many aspects of chemistry, a science which is so inextricably enveloped in our daily life. A "chemical" Rector disguises himself as Alice and ventures into a land, the Facebook land, where the wonders coming from imaginative journeys in matter, in its laws and in its imponderable enigmatic nature, take shape

Abstract: What is a comment? What does it mean to interpret a text? What are the skills and methods used by great masters such as Auerbach, Spitzer, Sontag, Segre, Adelia Noferi, Contini, Barthes and Raimondi in their dialogue with the ancient and new hermeneutic theories? What kind of relationship is established between message/text and commentator? What is the common ground where the act of interpreting and that of translating end up meeting? Enza Biagini wonders about these fundamental questions while, between comment and commentary, she carries out an articulated and complex study on one of the major arts born for and around reading: translation. A demanding game is indeed played between interpreter and translator, which Enza Biagini analyses and discusses with great theoretical knowledge, crossing Italian and French experiments, original texts and anthologies, with the aim of verifying theories on the field of literature which, as such, is based on an endless quest for the interpretation of meaning

Abstract: This is the second of the two volumes dedicated to Hermeticism and Florence published by Firenze University Press (the first one entitled Critici, traduttori, maestri, modelli can be purchased separately). Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence. Many of them recognized themselves in a common narrative marked by a shared imagination, and in the silent dissent from the rhetoric of the regime, which was contrasted by the radicalism of the ethical request and by the deep bond with the Jewish-Christian, romantic and -symbolist roots of the European civilization. One hundred years after the birth of its protagonists (Mario Luzi, Piero Bigongiari, Alessandro Parronchi, Vittorio Bodini), there are still doubts surrounding Hermeticism, its birth and its distinctive features. Searching for how it changed, why it was surrounded by prejudices and aversion (as done by the two essential volumes collecting the documents of a memorable conference in which Anna Dolfi involved scholars from all over the world), leads to draw a portrait of the Hermetic authors, its critics (Bo, Macrí), its friends (the generational companion Vittorio Sereni), admirers and/or detractors, and to outline the boundaries of a complex chapter of Italian history which began with Fascism and recently ended with the fall of ideologies. Together with its 'players', Florence is in a prominent position, a city which, for a few decades, was exposed to the greatness of the past by a new passion, made of culture, creativity and intelligence

Abstract: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author's proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation

Abstract: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì's well-known "Dimore vitali"), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his "teacher" stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by "gratitude", "esteem" and "trust"

Abstract: This is the first of the two volumes dedicated to Hermeticism and Florence published by Firenze University Press (the second one entitled Luzi, Bigongiari, Parronchi, Bodini, Sereni can be purchased separately). Between 1930 and 1945, a group of young people started one of the most vibrant literary seasons of the 20th century in Florence, known as Florentine Hermeticisms (or simply Hermeticism). Many of its members recognised themselves in a common narrative marked by a shared imagination, and in the silent dissent from the rhetoric of the regime, which was contrasted by the radicalism of the ethical request and by the deep bond with the Jewish-Christian, romantic and symbolist roots of the European civilisation. A hundred years after the birth of its protagonists, there is still much wondering on the nature and definition of Hermeticism, on how it was born, on what distinguished it, on what signs it suffered and left. Searching for how it changed, why it was surrounded by passion, prejudices and aversion (as done by the two essential volumes collecting the documents of a memorable conference in which Anna Dolfi involved scholars from all over the world), leads to draw a portrait of the Hermetic authors, its admirers and/or detractors, and to outline the boundaries and the characteristics of a complex chapter of Italian history which began with Fascism and recently ended with the fall of ideologies. Among masters, companions, followers, the figures of Bo, Macrí, Luzi, Bigongiari, Parronchi, Bodini and of the companion Sereni, stand out for the strength of a suggestive writing experience highly meditative, for all the critic, translation, narrative and poetry genres

Abstract: This book challenges critical approaches that argue for Giacomo Leopardi's and Samuel Beckett's pessimism and nihilism. Such approaches stem from the quotation of Leopardi in Beckett's monograph Proust, as part of a discussion about the removal of desire. Nonetheless, in contrast to ataraxia as a form of ablation of desire, the desire of and for the Other is here presented as central in the two authors' oeuvres. Desire in Leopardi and Beckett is read as lying at the cusp between the theories of Jacques Lacan and Emmanuel Levinas, a desire that splits as much as it moulds the subject when called to address the Other (inspiring what Levinas terms 'infinity' as opposed to 'totality,' an infinity pitted against the nothingness crucial to pessimist and nihilist readings)

Abstract: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London's Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the 'sane other', shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period

Abstract: Within the Kafkaesque bestiary, the dog is undoubtedly the animal that deserves a more careful study: it is the image which the author uses the most, in literary writing but also in the private one, and which occupies a a very large time span, so much so that it becomes a real key figure through which to read Kafka's work from a possible new perspective. The volume aims to demonstrate how the problems that have characterized Kafka's existence are hidden behind the dog's symbology, the reflections around which he has concentrated, throughout his life, his thought and his writing: the woman and the question of marriage, writing itself, religion as a relationship with the divine

Abstract: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi's careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí's presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the "mover of culture" and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer's most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before

Abstract: Recent work on second language acquisition within the generative framework has pointed out interfaces (syntax-discourse, syntax-semantics, etc.) as a residual domain of vulnerability in L2. Rather than in core syntax, it is at the interface level that the divergence between native and non-native grammars has been shown to be more prominent. In this book the investigation of answering strategies and the focalization of new information subjects, which require access to the syntax-discourse interface, will be pursued. Data is collected through an oral elicitation task on Finnish and Italian, a rather unexplored language pair, in various stages of language development: advanced and intermediate L2 acquisition, L1 under L2 attrition, early bilingualism, child monolingual L1 development

Abstract: The systematic examination of the fluctuations in the definition of the terms "neo-avant-garde" and "post-modern" is at the base of this study, which therefore evolves through the comparative analysis of different contexts, with particular reference to the Italian one (Group 63) and to the French one (Nouveau Roman). Thus, an articulated framework of deeply intertwined narrative experiences emerges, making a valid and completely original contribution to the discussion on well-established historical categories within the literary history and critical theory of the second half of the 20th century

Abstract: The Greek koinè shows a double development in the crystallised Greek language (intended for literary, administrative and ecclesiastical uses) and the language of everyday use subject to innovations that would lead to the birth neo-Greek, which was never the official language for written documents. This situation determined the almost absolute lack of documents that allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the Greek language from the late age to the early Middle Ages. This work contributes to the reconstruction of this gap by analysing the Greek language of the the private letters written on papyrus, a documentary typology probably close to the spoken register. The analysis isolated four peculiar phenomena of the morphosyntactic evolution of the Greek (genitive-dative syncretism, disappearance of the infinitive, replacement of the perfect tense with equivalent periphrases and disposition of the clitics), offering a renewed picture

Abstract: Leonardo Manigrasso has made use of the most up-to-date tools made available by stylistic criticism and translation studies to offer a series of intense "debates" and comparisons between the greatest poets-translators born in Italy between the 1910s and the early 1920s. The choice to cross multiple versions of the same source text allows the reader to verify the multiple ways of implicit reading and rewriting during the translation process, establishing distances, documenting unexpected dialogues, exposing the bonds between the translated work and the "creative" work of each author. The interaction between different and remarkable textual features has the goal of reconstructing a fundamental chapter in the history of twentieth century poetry, from the birth of hermetic koinè to a notion of translating as a predominantly empirical and individual process

Abstract: The archaeology of the graphic novel does not shed light on the historical origins of the comic book; on the contrary, it tries to discover the conceptual genesis of this narrative form. If the research methodology is archaeological, in fact, the theoretical approach is the same as neuro-narratology, in the light of which four important stages are suggested. These stages define the comic novel as a "natural" literary genre, a mimesis of the process transposing reality into images and constituting the basis of thought. The figure of Rodolphe Töpffer is not excluded from this process. Thanks to his theories and his work, he leads us to hypothesize that the comic book was more "novelistic" at its origin than it is in its current forms: the path to the novel, then, would not be so much of an evolution, but rather a return to the origins
