Abstract: Short takes for the time-challenged leader. The logical follow-up to Chandler's previous best-sellers, 00 Ways to Motivate Yourself and Reinventing Yourself. Leadership can be fun if you break it into 100 easy pieces. Be the great leader you've always wanted to be with 100 pithy, persuasive alternatives to the usual way most of us try to motivate others-by downloading our anxiety onto theirs. Breakthrough concepts abound: ""Don't manage people, manage agreements."" ""Tell the truth quickly."" ""Stop talking,"" ""Soften your heart."" ""To motivate your people, first just relax."" Myths are exploded: multitasking is not a strength. We don't ""have"" self-discipline, we use it-or not. You don't have too much to do; you have one thing to do, and that's the thing you have chosen to do right now. These are tried-and-proven ways to inspire success in the people you lead-and in yourself. A vital, accessible, user-friendly guide for executives, managers, professionals, and those aspiring to reach their level.

Abstract: Women and Journalism offers a rich and comprehensive analysis of the roles, status and experiences of women journalists in the United States and Britain. Drawing on a variety of sources and dealing with a host of women journalists ranging from nineteenth century pioneers to Martha Gellhorn, Kate Adie and Veronica Guerin, the authors investigate the challenges women have faced in their struggle to establish reputations as professionals. This book provides an account of the gendered structuring of journalism in print, radio and television and speculates about women's still-emerging role in online journalism. Their accomplishments as war correspondents are tracked to the present, including a study of the role they played post-September 11th.

Abstract: The way electronic instruments are built is changing in a deeply fundamental way. It is making an evolutionary leap to a new method of design that is being called synthetic instruments. This new method promises to be the most significant advance in electronic test and instrumentation since the introduction of automated test equipment (ATE). The switch to synthetic instruments is beginning now, and it will profoundly affect all test and measurement equipment that will be developed in the future. Synthetic instruments are like ordinary instruments in that they are specific to a particular measurement or test. They might be a voltmeter that measures voltage, or a spectrum analyzer that measures spectra. The key, defining difference is this: synthetic instruments are implemented purely in software that runs on general purpose, non-specific measurement hardware with a high speed A/D and D/A at its core. In a synthetic instrument, the software is specific; the hardware is generic. Therefore, the "personality" of a synthetic instrument can be changed in an instant. A voltmeter may be a spectrum analyzer a few seconds later, and then become a power meter, or network analyzer, or oscilloscope. Totally different instruments are implemented on the same hardware and can be switched back and forth in the blink of an eye. This book explains the basics of synthetic instrumentation for the many people that will need to quickly learn about this revolutionary way to design test equipment. This book attempts to demystify the topic, cutting through, commercial hype, and obscure, vague jargon, to get to the heart of the technique. It reveals the important basic underlying concepts, showing people how the synthetic instrument design approach, properly executed, is so effective in creating nstrumentation that out performs traditional approaches to T&M and ATE being used today. provides an overview and complete introduction to this revolutionary new technology enables equipment designers and manufacturers to produce vastly more functional and flexible instrumentation; it's not your father's multimeter!

Abstract: New technologies are revolutionising the way manufacturing and supply chain management are implemented. These changes are delivering manufacturing firms the competitive advantage of a highly flexible and responsive supply chain and manufacturing system to ensure that they meet the high expectations of their customers, who, in today's economy, demand absolutely the best service, price, delivery time and product quality. To make e-manufacturing and supply chain technologies effective, integration is needed between various, often disparate systems. To understand why this is such an issue, one needs to understand what the different systems or system components do, their objectives, their specific focus areas and how they interact with other systems. It is also required to understand how these systems evolved to their current state, as the concepts used during the early development of systems and technology tend to remain in place throughout the life-cycle of the systems/technology. This book explores various standards, concepts and techniques used over the years to model systems and hierarchies in order to understand where they fit into the organization and supply chain. It looks at the specific system components and the ways in which they can be designed and graphically depicted for easy understanding by both information technology (IT) and non-IT personnel. Without a good implementation philosophy, very few systems add any real benefit to an organization, and for this reason the ways in which systems are implemented and installation projects managed are also explored and recommendations are made as to possible methods that have proven successful in the past. The human factor and how that impacts on system success are also addressed, as is the motivation for system investment and subsequent benefit measurement processes. Finally, the vendor/user supply/demand within the e-manufacturing domain is explored and a method is put forward that enables the reduction of vendor bias during the vendor selection process. The objective of this book is to provide the reader with a good understanding regarding the four critical factors (business/physical processes, systems supporting the processes, company personnel and company/personal performance measures) that influence the success of any e-manufacturing implementation, and the synchronization required between these factors. · Discover how to implement the flexible and responsive supply chain and manufacturi...

Abstract: In network design, the gap between theory and practice is woefully broad. This book narrows it, comprehensively and critically examining current network design models and methods. You will learn where mathematical modeling and algorithmic optimization have been under-utilized. At the opposite extreme, you will learn where they tend to fail to contribute to the twin goals of network efficiency and cost-savings. Most of all, you will learn precisely how to tailor theoretical models to make them as useful as possible in practice. Throughout, the authors focus on the traffic demands encountered in the real world of network design. Their generic approach, however, allows problem formulations and solutions to be applied across the board to virtually any type of backbone communication or computer network. For beginners, this book is an excellent introduction. For seasoned professionals, it provides immediate solutions and a strong foundation for further advances in the use of mathematical modeling for network design. Written by leading researchers with a combined 40 years of industrial and academic network design experience. Considers the development of design models for different technologies, including TCP/IP, IDN, MPLS, ATM, SONET/SDH, and WDM. Discusses recent topics such as shortest path routing and fair bandwidth assignment in IP/MPLS networks. Addresses proper multi-layer modeling across network layers using different technologies—for example, IP over ATM over SONET, IP over WDM, and IDN over SONET. Covers restoration-oriented design methods that allow recovery from failures of large-capacity transport links and transit nodes. Presents, at the end of each chapter, exercises useful to both students and practitioners.

Abstract: In the last 40 years, machine vision has evolved into a mature field embracing a wide range of applications including surveillance, automated inspection, robot assembly, vehicle guidance, traffic monitoring and control, signature verification, biometric measurement, and analysis of remotely sensed images. While researchers and industry specialists continue to document their work in this area, it has become increasingly difficult for professionals and graduate students to understand the essential theory and practicalities well enough to design their own algorithms and systems. This book directly addresses this need. As in earlier editions, E.R. Davies clearly and systematically presents the basic concepts of the field in highly accessible prose and images, covering essential elements of the theory while emphasizing algorithmic and practical design constraints. In this thoroughly updated edition, he divides the material into horizontal levels of a complete machine vision system. Application case studies demonstrate specific techniques and illustrate key constraints for designing real-world machine vision systems. · Includes solid, accessible coverage of 2-D and 3-D scene analysis. · Offers thorough treatment of the Hough Transform—a key technique for inspection and surveillance. · Brings vital topics and techniques together in an integrated system design approach. · Takes full account of the requirement for real-time processing in real applications.

Abstract: While many architects use PHP for projects, they are often not aware of the power of PHP in creating enterprise-level applications. This book covers the latest version of PHP – version 5 -- and focuses on its capabilities within a multi-tier application framework. It contains numerous coding samples and commentaries on them. A chapter discusses object orientation in PHP as it applies to the multi-tier architecture and other chapters discuss HTTP and SOAP, the two communication protocols most useful in tying together multiple layers. Abstract: Software Design for Engineers and Scientists integrates three core areas of computing: . Software engineering - including both traditional methods and the insights of 'extreme programming' . Program design - including the analysis of data structures and algorithms . Practical object-oriented programming Without assuming prior knowledge of any particular programming language, and avoiding the need for students to learn from separate, specialised Computer Science texts, John Robinson takes the reader from small-scale programing to competence in large software projects, all within one volume. Copious examples and case studies are provided in C++ and students can access complementary examples in Java on an accompanying website. The book is especially suitable for undergraduates in the natural sciences and all branches of engineering who have some knowledge of computing basics, and now need to understand and apply software design to tasks like data analysis, simulation, signal processing or visualisation. John Robinson introduces both software theory and its application to problem solving using a range of design principles, applied to the creation of medium-sized systems, providing key methods and tools for designing reliable, efficient, maintainable programs. The case studies are presented within scientific contexts to illustrate all aspects of the design process, allowing students to relate theory to real-world applications. Abstract: Google, the most popular search engine worldwide, provides web surfers with an easy-to-use guide to the Internet, with web and image searches, language translation, and a range of features that make web navigation simple enough for even the novice user. What many users don’t realize is that the deceptively simple components that make Google so easy to use are the same features that generously unlock security flaws for the malicious hacker. Vulnerabilities in website security can be discovered through Google hacking, techniques applied to the search engine by computer criminals, identity thieves, and even terrorists to uncover secure information. This book beats Google hackers to the punch, equipping web administrators with penetration testing applications to ensure their site is invulnerable to a hacker’s search. Penetration Testing with Google Hacks explores the explosive growth of a technique known as "Google Hacking." When the modern security landscape includes such heady topics as "blind SQL injection" and "integer overflows," it's refreshing to see such a deceptively simple tool bent to achieve such amazing results; this is hacking in the purest sense of the word. Readers will learn how to torque Google to detect SQL injection points and login portals, execute port scans and CGI scans, fingerprint web servers, locate incredible information caches such as firewall and IDS logs, password databases, SQL dumps and much more - all without sending a single packet to the target! Borrowing the techniques pioneered by malicious "Google hackers," this talk aims to show security practitioners how to properly protect clients from this often overlooked and dangerous form of information leakage. *First book about Google targeting IT professionals and security leaks through web browsing. *Author Johnny Long, the authority on Google hacking, will be speaking about "Google Hacking" at the Black Hat 2004 Briefing. His presentation on penetrating security flaws with Google is expected to create a lot of buzz and exposure for the topic. *Johnny Long's Web site hosts the largest repository of Google security exposures and is the most popular destination for security professionals who want to learn about the dark side of Google.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication provides information related to the viability of Linux as a client platform. It targets technical personnel who are involved in evaluating Linux as a possible client platform. It also targets administrators and support personnel who are responsible for supporting client systems. This book can also be helpful to anyone who is evaluating the potential of using Linux for enterprise client systems. However, the key focus is on environments where OS/2 is currently used. Many enterprises have been using OS/2 as a stable platform for critical enterprise client applications. However, as those enterprises look to the future, they look for a platform on which they can build a strategy that is open, standards-based, secure, and provides a cost-effective solution. Linux has become successful as a server platform in many of these same enterprises. It comes as no surprise that these enterprises also want to evaluate the possibility of including Linux for many of their client systems. This book describes platform and functional considerations for choosing Linux as a client platform. It examines techniques and facilities for administering Linux clients, coexistence of Linux clients with other platforms, and a technique to easily install Linux clients based on the well-known OS/2-based CID methodology. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: Design and deploy high availability IP and MPLS network architectures with this comprehensive guide Includes a detailed overview of the IP/MPLS forwarding and control plane protocols, including OSPF, IS-IS, LDP, BGP, and RSVP Analyze fault-tolerant IP/MPLS control plane architectures with the explanations in this book Develop a clear understanding of various high availability aspects of IP/MPLS networks Learn how to seamlessly deploy IP/MPLS control plane restart mechanisms Master the application of fault-tolerant control-plane architectures in designing and deploying highly reliable and available MPLS applications, such as traffic engineering, L2VPNs, and L3VPNs Understand the layered architecture of network-level fault recovery mechanisms, such as optical, SONET, MPLS, and interactions between different layers In the wake of increased traffic, today's service providers and enterprises must assure high availability across a variety of networked services and applications. Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is the enabling technology for the widespread deployment of IP networks in core and Metro Ethernet applications. Many service providers need to move their legacy Layer 2 and Layer 3 services onto converged MPLS and IP-enabled networks, but high availability is a prerequisite for offering profitable carrier-class services. Although most carrier-class routers do provide an adequate level of hardware redundancy, control-plane software is still vulnerable to and, in many cases, the cause of router failures. Fault-Tolerant IP and MPLS Networks provides you with an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms that improve the reliability and availability of IP and MPLS control plane components. The IP/MPLS control-plane architecture and all its restart mechanisms are explained with examples and deployment considerations. This explanation of IP/MPLS control-plane architecture begins with a service view of the network, moves on to the node-level view by partitioning the network into its constituent network elements, and then advances to the component-level view to explore various techniques that can be used to improve the reliability and availability of each component. The top-down and example-oriented approach facilitates a solid understanding of the constituent components before moving on to more advanced MPLS applications involving multiple components. Fault-Tolerant IP and MPLS Networks is your practical guide for understanding, designing, and deployin...

Abstract: In September 2003, Macromedia released Flash MX 2004, and with it, ActionScript 2.0, a dramatically improved version of Flash's programming language. ActionScript 2.0 introduces a formal object-oriented programming syntax and methodology for creating Flash applications. From a developer's perspective, the new OOP-based techniques in ActionScript 2.0 make applications more natural to plan and conceptualize, more stable, more reusable across projects, easier to maintain, change, and expand upon, and much more. In short, they enhance the entire development process. In Essential ActionScript 2.0 , bestselling author Colin Moock--one of the most universally respected developers in the Flash community--covers everything you'll need to know about the new ActionScript language and its methodologies for producing movies, animation, and applications on the web. Moock guides readers through this important new territory with his trademark easy-to-understand style and expertise. Moock's goal throughout the book is not just to get you to use object-oriented programming in your daily Flash work: he wants you to reap the benefits of OOP; he wants you to understand ActionScript 2.0 completely. And without question, Moock is the author who can make this happen. Essential ActionScript 2.0 begins with a tour of the language, including the fundamentals of object-oriented concepts, syntax, and usage. Those who are new to OOP will learn the basics and how to apply their understanding. Those who are familiar with OOP will leverage their prior experience to learn about Flash-based OOP. The next part of the book shows how to structure entire applications with ActionScript 2.0, teaching you best practices and techniques to build scalable, extensible, stable apps. Next, you'll explore a variety of approaches to various programming situations by applying object-oriented programming strategies, known as design patterns, to Flash. Experienced Flash developers and programmers coming from other languages will enjoy the sheer depth of Moocks's coverage and expertise in Essential ActionScript 2.0 . Novice programmers will appreciate the frequent, low-jargon explanations that are often glossed over by advanced programming books. As usual, Moock guarantees quality and accuracy by working closely with Macromedia Flash engineers, including Rebecca Sun, lead developer of ActionScript 2.0. Whether you're ready to make the move to ActionScript 2.0 now or simply assessing it for the fu...

Abstract: The view presented in The Internet and Its Protocols is at once broad and deep. It covers all the common protocols and how they combine to create the Internet in its totality. More importantly, it describes each one completely, examining the requirements it addresses and the exact means by which it does its job. These descriptions include message flows, full message formats, and message exchanges for normal and error operation. They are supported by numerous diagrams and tables. This book's comparative approach gives you something more valuable: insight into the decisions you face as you build and maintain your network, network device, or network application. Author Adrian Farrel’s experience and advice will dramatically smooth your path as you work to offer improved performance and a wider range of services. * Provides comprehensive, in-depth, and comparative coverage of the Internet Protocol (both IPv4 and IPv6) and its many related technologies. * Written for developers, operators, and managers, and designed to be used as both an overview and a reference. * Discusses major concepts in traffic engineering, providing detailed looks at MPLS and GMPLS and how they control both IP and non-IP traffic. * Covers protocols for governing routing and transport, and for managing switches, components, and the network as a whole, along with higher-level application protocols. * Offers thoughtful guidance on choosing between protocols, selecting features within a protocol, and other service- and performance-related decisions.

Abstract: Building on the cool ideal, this IBM® IBM Redbooks publication describes V5 enhancements to many of the TCP/IP applications. The two book predecessors, combined, have been downloaded over 97,000 times: for V3, Cool Title About the AS/400 and Internet, SG24-4815-01, and V4 TCP/IP for AS/400: More Cool Things Than Ever, SG24-5190-00. Both of these extremely popular books are “aggregators” — a place to bring together many different technologies all in one place to have a common theme; teach the basics. That is, teach what the functions can do, define scenarios, and then implement the scenarios in a how-to fashion. Many of the topics covered in those earlier books, such as HTTP, Digital Certificates, and even TCP/IP have grown to the point now that they require their own Redbooks™ . In this book, we cover Telnet, FTP, IPP, NTP, SMTP, and making VPN connections with the iSeries™ , to and from the Internet. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: This IBM Redbooks publication examines business process integration using Business Process Choreographer to build solutions that help to streamline the supply chain process. We provide a sample scenario that integrates business processes to streamline a supply chain showing how suppliers and customers can use global repositories to synchronize data. The sample scenario discussed in this publication was initially implemented using WebSphere Application Server Enterprise Process Choreographer to aggregate and transform supplier product data. Data is then published to a global repository using the WebSphere Web Services Gateway, and also loaded to a catalog that uses a WebSphere Commerce portal. We take this existing scenario and detail how to migrate the business processes to run on WebSphere Business Integration Server Foundation V5.1. As part of this migration effort we describe how to use WebSphere Studio Application Developer Integration Edition V5.1 as the development environment for process migration. The migrated sample uses Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) processes. Please note that the additional material referenced in the text is not available from IBM.

Abstract: A complete IP Telephony migration planning guide Includes Steps to Success Poster It's everyone's "must have." This is a reference book for the entire project team who works on the deployment of an IP Telephony solution. Take advantage of best practices. Includes more than 200 best practices, lessons learned, and tips for getting you through your IP Telephony deployment successfully. Minimize risk and learn from the mistakes of others. Read the list of the top 10 things that can go wrong during an IP Telephony deployment. Ask the right questions. Get the project team thinking and collaborating together with Stephanie's "Checklist of Questions to Ask the Project Team." Use proven planning tools. Work from sample checklists, templates, project plans, and workflow documents to guide your planning process. Keep the Steps to Success on the minds of your project team. Use the enclosed poster, which illustrates every major step associated with an IP Telephony deployment. There is no better path to the successful implementation of a new technology than to follow in the experienced footsteps of an organization that has already been there. The Road to IP Telephony tells you how Cisco Systems successfully moved its own organization to a converged, enterprise-wide network. You will learn the implementation and operational processes, what worked, what didn't work, and how to develop your own successful methodology. After presenting this topic to hundreds of Cisco customers, including Fortune 500 companies, Stephanie Carhee consistently encountered the same question, "If I decide to move to IP Telephony, where do I begin and what can I do to ensure that I do it right the first time?" Although the needs of every enterprise are different, some things are universal; planning, communication, teamwork, and understanding your user's requirements are as important as technical expertise. The Road to IP Telephony shares with you everything you need to know about managing your deployment. It starts with where to begin, including what needs to be addressed before you even begin the planning process, to building your project team. Key best practices are also offered to help you set the project's pace and schedule, get your users on board, identify a migration strategy, develop a services and support strategy, and work toward the final PBX decommission. "Cisco IT wants to share its implementation experience with Cisco customers and partners to aide in the deployment pra...

Abstract: The IBM Patterns for e-business are a group of proven, reusable assets. They increase the speed of developing and deploying Web applications. This IBM Redbooks publication focuses on advanced application integration using the Process-focused Application Integration: Serial Process Application pattern for intra-enterprise, and the Extended Enterprise: Exposed Serial Process Application pattern for inter-enterprise. This book consists of four parts. Part 1 guides you through the process of selecting an Application and Runtime pattern. Then, it helps you to identify platform-specific Product mappings based upon the selected Runtime pattern. Part 2 presents guidelines to apply the Patterns approach to a sample business scenario and to select application integration technologies. Part 3 provides detailed design, development, and runtime guidelines for intra-enterprise integration solutions. Part 4 provides design guidelines for inter-enterprise integration solutions. Both Parts 3 and 4 provide examples to show you how to use IBM WebSphere InterChange Server V4.2.1.5 and IBM WebSphere Application Server V5.1 with Web services for the respective solutions. Abstract: Reduce costs, improve efficiencies, and focus on your core business Leverage your technology infrastructure to save money and virtualize processes. Discover the principles behind BPV and the ways in which they can benefit your business. Benefit from incremental cost savings, maximizing your business' ROI. Learn from real-world case studies that illustrate best practices. Understand the solution-provider market, maximizing the impact of your investment. The dot-com collapse generally discredited the idea of leveraging the Internet to build viable businesses. Many market pundits have decried the concept without examining the underlying dynamics associated with these companies' failures. The truth is, prior business models were built on a flawed business case, not bad technology. In fact, the dot-com bubble created a whole new class of automation that, when applied to conventional businesses, can dramatically improve time to market, competitive response, and customer interaction. This is not virtual business; this is business process virtualization (BPV), and enterprises that don't grasp and apply the principals of BPV will rapidly be rendered obsolete by those that do, being quickly outmaneuvered and displaced in the market. BPV is the application of networked, intelligent IT infrastructure to enhance skilled personnel, processes, and assets, which enables companies to improve efficiencies, increase competitive advantage, heighten brand awareness, reduce costs, and improve bottom line revenues. Unlike business process automation, BPV focuses on new management approaches for personnel and technology, signaling a fundamental change in the way that we think about business and its objectives. While reading The Case for Virtual Business Processes , you will understand why BPV is critical to the long-term viability of your business, while learning how to leverage your intelligent networked infrastructure using leading-edge products and technologies from Cisco Systems. This volume is in the Network Business Series offered by Cisco Press. Books in this series provide IT executives, decision makers, and networking professionals with pertinent information on today's most important technologies and business strategies.

Abstract: The IBM eServer xSeries 455 is the second-generation Enterprise X-Architecture server using the 64-bit IBM XA-64 chipset and the Intel Itanium 2 processor. Unlike the x450, its predecessor, the x455 supports the merging of four server chassis to form a single 16-way image, providing even greater expandability and investment protection. This IBM Redbooks publication is a comprehensive resource on the technical aspects of the server, and is divided into five key subject areas: --Chapter 1, “Technical description”, introduces the server and its subsystems and describes the key features and how they work. --Chapter 2, “Positioning”, examines the types of applications that would be used on a server such as the x455. --Chapter 3, “Planning”, describes the considerations when planning to purchase and planning to install the x455. --Chapter 4, “Installation”, covers the process of installing Windows Server 2003, SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS on the x455. --Chapter 5, “Management”, describes how to use the Remote Supervisor Adapter to send alerts to an IBM Director management environment.

Abstract: The IBM Grid Toolbox can assist enterprises that deploy, manage, and control grid computing, as well as developers who create products that assist in managing and deploying grids. This grid-enabling toolkit contains standardized development code, much of which was harvested from the open source community, plus an added database and run-time environment. This IBM Redbooks publication is designed to give the reader a comprehensive view of the IBM Grid Toolbox. As the IBM Grid Toolbox is designed in a layered approach, we describe the product by introducing each underlying layer until the whole ecosystem is revealed. The product significantly leverages open standards in the grid computing world, so we show how the IBM Grid Toolbox complements and enhances these standards for the development and deployment of grid services and applications.
