Abstract: The article addresses textual decisions made by Čechov's editors in publishing his early short stories. We demonstrate that choices made by other editors and translators has depended crucially on the configuration of his texts found in academic editions of Čechov's Complete Works. Specifically, in the volumes that these editions devote to the young Čechov, editors place what are in fact the first versions of these short stories in the critical appendix, while furnishing as the featured examples of these texts' versions that Čechov had reviewed and retouched for collections published during his lifetime. As a result, works of the "young Čechov" are often actually works of the "mature Čechov", a situation that has led to a worldwide misunderstanding

Abstract: The Croatian Moderna is usually defined as the moment when Croatian literature catches up with the literary trends that were current in Europe at that time. This "turn to Europe" was made possible by a series of historical events as well as by the experiences of a number of Croatian students living abroad, who encouraged the transnational debate that would eventually revolutionize Croatian literary culture. We argue, using the terms of Pierre Bourdieu, that the transnational and cosmopolitan nature of Moderna made possible the genesis of an autonomous Croatian literary field

Abstract: This article investigates the rhetoric of martyrdom that developed in seventeenth-century Ukraine and specifically the discourse of Orthodox martyrdom as elaborated by Ukrainian Baroque preachers in recounting the life and death of the martyrized princes Boris and Gleb. We focus in particular on one exemplary case, that of Antonij Radyvylovs'kyj's Slovo pervoe na sviatyx strastoterpec kniazej Borisa i Gleba (Kyiv, 1676). Tracing the contours of specific ideologies of martyrdom that arose in 17th-century Kyiv, we also address the issue of interconfessional encounters, in particular those taking place along the Orthodox-Catholic divide

Abstract: This article examine handwriting textbooks from 18th-century Europe. In 1774 the court of Vienna charged Johann Ignaz Felbiger with reforming the schools and his book on penmanship (1775) became the standard reference for how to write. In 1776 the Court sought a book on penmanship to be used specifically in Serbian and Vlach schools; the textbook of Zaharija Orfelin (1778) came into being to fill this need. The textbooks of both Felbiger and Orphelin have their basis in Felbiger's first book on penmanship (1768). We also explore the possibility that other European handwriting manuals served as models for earlier works by Orfelin (1759, 1776)

Abstract: The Vocabolario di tre nobilissimi linguaggi, produced by Ivan Tanzlingher-Zanotti between the latter half of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, currently exists in four manuscript versions: one is located in Zagreb, another in London, a third in Padova, and the fourth discovered only recently in Zadar. We focus on the Padova manuscript, which represents Tanzlingher's mature work, to show that it differs importantly from other lexicographical works originating in 17th-century Dalmatia: while those are based on Latin models, here Tanzlingher turns for the first time to the Crusca Dictionary (Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca)

Abstract: In Russia, the term "Europeanism" first appeared in the 19th century. The russkij evropeec (European Russian) received a European upbringing that incorporated the moral and cultural values developed within European civilization since the 14th century and can be seen as an embodiment of the European spirit. We argue that the apogee of russkij evropeec may be represented by Maksim Maksimovič Kovalevskij (1851-1916), historian, jurist, sociologist, ethnographer, and political activist, who died on the eve of Empire's fall. This article examines the components of the European idea as they are are found in the autobiographical writings of this outstanding intellectual

Abstract: Numerous and rich materials in yet unpublished archives provide information on the coproduction of several Italian and Soviet films, the first of which is Giuseppe De Santis's Attack and Retreat (1961-1964), representing almost four years' of work. This article examines radically different versions of the script, the minutes of meetings in which these scripts were reviewed by both parties, and other documents relating to process of joint production to reveal a number of curious details. We also demonstrate that this was a far from peaceful process and that the tortuous progress made by the partners was symptomatic of political and cultural issues in their countries of origin

Abstract: In the decades prior to the Revolution of 1917, the Russian intelligencija was strongly influenced by Western European intellectuals, including Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was one of the European philosophers who played a prominent role in shaping Russian perceptions of reality in this period, although his thought was interpreted by Russians in contrasing ways. The article examines the case of Dmitrij Merežkovskij, reassessing the extent of Nietzsche's influence on his oeuvre. In our view, Nietzsche did not only influence Merežkovskij's early poetry, where aesthetic and anti-Christian views prevail, but also contributed to the sensual and individualist nature of his later prose

Abstract: This article argues that the traditional picture of Russian Futurists as fiercely opposed to this war does not correspond to reality. We begin by examining the general historical background for Marinetti's notorious motto "War as the World's only Hygiene" and identify echoes of this conception in articles that Vladimir Majakovskij published in the autumn of 1914. Nationalistic and panslavic ideas, coupled with anti-German sentiments, characterized the early years of Velimir Chlebnikov's literary activity; we explore these ideas and Chlebnikov's gradual passage from this belligerent vision to his utopian project for a world without wars

Abstract: This article explores the diplomatic correspondence sent to the Doge of Venice by Peter I (1721) and by his daughter Empress Elizabeth I (1743), informing him of peace treaties that had recently been concluded between Russia and Sweden. Analyzing these letters in the context of Russia's diplomatic and epistolary relations with Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries, we examine their structure and composition with particular attention to the presence of diplomatic and epistolary formulae to identify evolutionary changes in the diplomatic and epistolary etiquette employed by Peter I and his successors

Abstract: Notable among the stylistic tools adopted by Dostoevskij to disseminate the values that he considered crucial for the moral revival of contemporary Russian society is the use of the aphorism. This article explores the origins of the renowned maxim "If you want to overcome the whole world, overcome yourself", a phrase that recurs either in this form or with some variation in the literary and journalistic texts that Dostoyevsky authored towards the end of his life. His sources include Saint Augustine, Thomas à Kempis, and Prosper of Aquitaine

Abstract: According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building

Abstract: Empirio-criticism had a huge impact in Russia, where the works of Ernst Mach and Richard Avenarius works were avidly translated and discussed, while the question of whether or not their ideas could be combined with Marxism provoked many disputes within the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party or RSDRP (Rossijskaja social-demokratičeskaja rabočaja partija). Anatolij Lunačarskij, who attended Avenarius's classes and seminars in Zurich, particularly appreciated the opportunity to blend critical evaluation, emotion, and objective knowledge. In this period prior to the Revolution, Lunačarskij developed a sort of 'religious' Marxism, full of hope and enthusiasm for a final human conquest of nature, views that he continued to hold into Soviet times

Abstract: The literary essay Treblinskij ad (The Hell of Treblinka), written by Vasilij Grossman and first published in the journal Znamja in 1944, circulated widely at the end of World War II, with editions appearing in several different languages. This article examines how Treblinskij ad spread across Europe and the United States during the Nuremberg Trials. We focus on the English, French, and German translations of the text that appeared between 1945 and 1947, and compare these translations with the versions of Grossman's essay that were published in Russia

Abstract: Will the new technological revolution inevitably destroy work? And will we have to get used to a society creating less and less employment opportunities? Shying away from apocalyptic as well as naively optimistic predictions, the Lecture offers some points for reflection on this question, constantly recurring in the media and the public, political and scientific debate. Based on what the past taught, the future depends on business and political strategies, and even on individual social actors

Abstract: "Still Blundering into Sense". Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy. This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields

Abstract: In recent years, the unprecedented experimental control of the laws of quantum mechanics has led to the so-called quantum technology revolution, a terminology adopted to refer to the applications in which quantum properties play a prominent role. Also the fundamental physics has benefited from these advancements with the development of quantum simulators, controlled quantum platforms engineered in such a way to emulate the physics of complex systems difficult to investigate with classical approaches. The present work deals with the simulation of some fundamental properties of quantum-Hall systems by means of degenerate fermionic Ytterbium atoms confined in artificial periodic potentials. Extreme regimes, inaccessible to real solid-state system, have been explored, paving the way to the observation of exotic phases of matter

Abstract: The book discusses the work of Italian Capuchins in the face of American otherness, especially in the catechism of Indians and mestizos accused of being devil's wizards. The friars faced a crisis in missionary optimism in the face of an alleged indigenous resistance to Christianity or to European social rules. The Portuguese colonial sources reveal evangelization as a field of dispute between the friars, the natives and the colonists, motivating daily conflicts, also encouraging changes in the social and symbolic traditions inside or near the missions. The indigenous people were not passive subjects in the process, contradicting the missionaries for the determination with which, supposedly, they practiced their "gentile" customs and rites. The documentation gathered adds important information to the study of indigenous peoples in contact with Capuchins in the inner territories of Portuguese America

Abstract: «Si risponde lavorando». Letters between 1941 and 1992. In 1941, Macrí was a notorious scholar, while Spagnoletti only a debutant poet, but their knowledge of books and magazines brought them to an intense exchange of letters, which would be interrupted in 1956 due to profound disagreements on poetry and on the assessment of Hermeticism. This correspondence, fully transcribed and carefully enriched by Andrea Giusti's notes, retraces that intellectual relationship in some decisive years of Italian history. With Fascism, war and reconstruction as a background, there is the rise of the ferment underlying cultural collaborations, of Spagnoletti's anthologist activity and of Macrí's studies on comparative literature and Spanish, which led him to become more sensitive and open towards European culture

The paper focuses on Gerasim Zelić's Žitije, signalling how it is filled with descriptions of the struggle to reach an important social position and obtain material gain. Nevertheless, Zelić cannot be compared with contemporary adventurers, as he combines the aspiration of the Enlightenment with a strong faith in the concept of predestination, on one side, and the struggle to obtain personal gain with a strong commitment towards the common good, on the other

Abstract: The murder of Emanuele Notarbartolo, former director of the Banco di Palermo, at the hands of the Sicilian Mafia in 1893 represents a controversial and obscure event in Italian history. There were three trials (Milan, Bologna, Florence), which also involved a Sicilian deputy: Raffaele Palizzolo. Anna Franchi's documentation work takes place in the Assize court of Florence: she attended every hearing, and observed relentlessly both the 'Mafia' phenomenon and the actual theatre of testimonies, confessions, retractions and false tracks characterising the trial in Florence (1903-1904). It was possible to widely integrate Franchi's account after the discovery of the entire folder relating to the process in the State Archives of Florence: about 1500 handwritten pages by the various chancellors dealing with the trial. The trial ended in a general acquittal for principals and executors for lack of evidence. For some, Sicily's honour was safe, but for many others, the truth was forever covered up

Abstract: What happened to the university teachers who were expelled after the racial laws of 1938? And what about the more numerous and less known unstructured scholars who were suspended from service? What did the students who were denied university enrolment or the new graduates with no prospects for their future do? The university archives tell us nothing about this; the general aim was for scholars and students who were declared of "Jewish race" to be cancelled and forgotten. It was not a small number of them who decided to leave Italy. What were their paths and help networks? How were they treated abroad? How much did Italian culture suffer from those losses? After the war, did universities try to restore them? The expatriates who returned could have brought new knowledge and ideas, but many never returned. Why? By focusing on the relevant case of Florence, the volume investigates the minimized phenomenon of intellectual emigration for political and racial reasons. A recent past in need of consideration and reflection

It is generally assumed that ill health and ultimately death prevented Solarić from finishing his job; however, the paper speculates that Solarić may have set his editing work aside in order to give priority to other editorial activities, as well as to foster his social connections with Frederick North and with members of the Shelley Circle

Abstract: The book focuses on current developments on territorial changes in International law. The study inquiries about whether according to international law, the referendum is a sufficient or a necessary condition for secession, or both. Through main "cases study", the book finds that there is no sufficient practice and opinio juris to support the existence of an international rule according to which the referendum is a sufficient element to legitimize the birth of a new entity. Nevertheless, there are at least some elements supporting the view that the referendum is becoming a necessary tool in the process for secession, provided that it complies with certain procedural standards

Abstract: This volume, on the basis of France and Italy's cases, analyses the changes in party systems and, more generally, in our democracies. The author underlines how it is possible to glimpse the personalization and mediatisation of politics in the appearance of personal and personalised parties; he also studies the rise of populists imposing their themes, language and way of doing politics. The populist style spreads within society and the public space so intensively that the people fighting the populists at the lowest level, in the end, resume their opponents' style. As Ilvo Diamanti wrote: there is now a people-ocracyor a dynamic which is currently destabilising our democracies

Abstract: This volume, born from the fifteen-year-long experience of teaching in classes of monolingual students from North American Universities, and born from many years of training in the fields of philosophy, linguistics and analysis, aims at meeting the students' essential linguistic needs, while also considering the improvement of the motivational framework as its main educational goal. To this aim, the text's structure is based on communication, and features a wide range of interactive activities in order for the students to be directly in contact with the real context and to be able to use the target language in an authentic way. The manual includes both a Textbook and a Workbook, as well as a section in English with grammar cards and a general glossary. In addition to the activities for the classroom, each unit includes a part dedicated to home exercises and a partial glossary, which the students have to fill in. The text does not offer separated cultural inserts, which are rarely integrated into the didactic programming; on the contrary, it features very short and simple cultural notes

Abstract: In the middle decades of the 19th century (also known as the "History century"), the archives opened to historical research in Italy as well, starting to raise new awareness on the importance of documentary sources from the Medieval and Modern Ages. The network of State Archives was organised gradually; however, before and after the Unification of Italy, cities, "municipal" scholars and their networks of relationships, as well as city archives and institutions, remained a dominant element. Using classification essays and a series of researches on individual citizen contexts from the whole Italian Peninsula, this volume explores the variety and richness of this transformation, in the country's centre and in the suburbs

Abstract: A particular kind of institutions contributed importantly to the organisation of overseas trade: funduqs and fondacos which originated around the medieval Mediterranean. This article aims to contribute to the debate on these institutions. This will be done by looking at the Portuguese feitoria, which may be considered as the missing link between the medieval Mediterranean institutions known as funduqs and fondacos and the early modern factories overseas. This allows to shed new light on relations and entanglements between different seascapes and thus to contribute to the fields of new institutional economics and global history

Abstract: Edoardo Cavallini (Florence, 1911-1968) was one of the most original and interesting personalities of the Italian music scene, but also one of the most overlooked. He was a prolific composer and a respected theorist, as well as a pioneer of modern microtonal (or, as he liked to call it, multicolour) music. The rich archive the Maestro left behind, which is currently kept at the Luigi Cherubini Conservatory of Florence, makes it possible to deepen the knowledge of his life and to restore his work, while at the same time granting him a posthumous, yet absolutely deserved recognition. This volume is intended as a navigation tool to be used among the documentary materials of his very rich archive, spacing from personal to official correspondence and passing through unpublished, handwritten notes

Abstract: This volume collects the proceedings of the seminar organized by the Unique Guarantee Committee for Equal Opportunities of the University of Florence, which focuses on a collective discussion regarding work, study and research conditions in contemporary universities. Drawing inspiration from the reflections of two Canadian teachers, M. Berg and B.K. Seeber, on the feelings of frustration and inadequacy due to the rhythms and objectives sometimes imposed in the university context, this volume focuses on the experiences and moods of all the people involved in the academic community with regard to the obstacles linked to lack of time and economic resources and to increasing workloads. It also offers a reflection on how to create relationships and networks, inaugurate sharing experiments on research and teaching experiences, as well as good practices to contrast those individual and collective drifts which may result in organizational discomfort, thus severely damaging the pursuit for the core values of public universities

This course was used as a trial for the peer-review teaching method, which can be useful in classes with a high number of students; this publication also includes a selection of the best works produced by the students. The results of the trial prove the advantages of using the peer-review teaching method for other university courses, and the students' works on e-health give current medical practitioners insights on how to use ICT in their practice with skill and care

Abstract: The challenge of civil pedagogy - on which three examples are indicated in the final part of the article - is to go beyond the logics that guided it up to today to build a new patriotism that has the whole as a reference humanity. For centuries, civil pedagogy has been an integral part of the Nation building, but today it has to deal with the end of the age of Nations and with criticism of narratives based on historical-linguistic, religious, ethnic factors. The crisis of Welfare state is not only the result of its ability to produce well-being, but, first of all, it is an institutional crisis, especially in the school. Public History and Public Pedagogy are then called to retrace the history and the principles of modern institutions

Abstract: Between the 14th and 15th centuries, a dense network of trade relations was active in the maritime basin of the western Mediterranean. The three regional areas that overlooked this sea, the Iberian and Provencal, the Italian and the African, and all the islands that were present in it, were equipped with numerous and important landing points and were connected by a dense network of exchanges. The essay takes into consideration the characteristics of this network of economic and cultural connections, and analyzes, particularly through the use of the Datini Archive, the role of the port of Rome in this system of exchanges and the links that merchants and bankers who acted in this city entertained with the Iberian mercantile centers

Abstract: Connettivi tedeschi e poeticità: l'attivazione dell'interprete tra forma e funzione. Studio teorico e analisi di un caso esemplare. Starting from Jakobson's definition of poeticalness, the volume studies the mechanisms by which connectors, such as linguistic signs assigned to the connection between parts of speech, contribute to the poeticalness in a text, which is here intended as a textual peculiarity capable of activating the interpreter in the tout court language, but mainly in the literary text. The first two chapters of this volume offer an overview of the theoretical and methodological foundations that justify the choice to acquire the connectors as possible indicators of poeticalness, and also a preparatory introduction to the third chapter, where there is the description of the results from a study on the syntax and semantics of the connector in in a collection of German poetry texts from the first half of the 20th century

Abstract: The two major ports on the French Atlantic coast have many points in common, including the facilities of relations with their hinterland. But, in the sixteenth century, they had a very different destiny. Bordeaux was a passive port, waiting for the ships to load the products offered by its merchants (wine, pastel) and redistributing it in its hinterland. Rouen had to supply Paris and the Paris region, to bring raw materials for the Normandy industry and to look for outlets for its productions: this port therefore quickly turned to distant destinations where it could satisfy the needs of its economy

Abstract: While travelling across Europe, the enlightened Orthodox monk Gerasim Zelić mentally never abandons his native Dalmatia. Moving from his Žitije, which is essentially a travelogue, the paper aims to analyse the tension between the open-minded, secular Zelić and the other Zelić, who identified himself with the Orthodox traditions of Dalmatia without knowing how to adjust them to modernity. According to the author, his rational head and his romantic heart make his global outlook deeply controversial and his mentality typical of a Homo Mediterraneus

Abstract: This paper, basing its analysis on England's national customs accounts between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, briefly examines England's ports as commercial nodes (of which London was the busiest, with Hull, Southampton and Bristol becoming the main regional hubs by the fifteenth century), its shipping (which provided both liner and tramping services and sailed all year round), and its exports (which shifted from wool to woollen cloth over the period). It then focuses on the range of markets with which English merchants and ships had direct maritime contacts

Abstract: Genoese merchants, who certainly did not disappear after 1627, during the second half of the century were able to establish new global-scale commercial networks on a par with those of other merchant communities (those of the Jews for instance). In the 1660s and for a few decades, Genoese goods - paper and fabrics - sailed to the Indies with African slaves. On their way back, the same Genoese ships would carry tonnes of silver and a wealth of other colonial goods thereby increasing trade with the East. This commercial framework is the backdrop to the story of Nicolò and Pietro Francesco Fieschi, two brothers whose lives testify how between the second half of the seventeenth century and the early decades of the eighteenth century, merchants from Genoa certainly had not withdrawn from international commerce focusing only on financial profits. On the contrary they were able to find new commercial momentum in opportunities provided by the connections brought about by the ever-more globalised world

Abstract: Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938, taught at the Royal University of Florence. Fermi's stay in Florence was short and only lasted two academic years (1924/25 and 1925/26); during those years, he taught "Mathematical Physics" and "Rational Mechanics" courses. This volume contributes to the reconstruction of this quite unknown period of Fermi's life, marked however by the publication of the Fermi statistics, a scientific breakthrough which would bring the Italian scientist to international celebrity thanks to its application in several fields of physics. This work is at the base, among other things, of semiconductor physics and therefore of modern electronics. The text also features Enrico Fermi's "Lessons of Rational Mechanics" to Science students and to students from the two-year preparatory course for Engineering studies during the aforementioned time span. The topics Enrico Fermi addressed in his lectures include kinematics and point dynamics, kinematics and statics of rigid systems and system statics in general. Lastly, the lessons contain 'Lagrangia''s equations and some elements of hydromechanics

Abstract: This volume, organised in thirty-two essays written by thirty-five among the most successful Italian scholars in the field of Slavic Studies, offers an extensive overview of the studies which have been conducted in Italy on Slavic literature, philology, linguistics, history and culture in recent years. Overall, the work highlights the great variety of paths and lines of research which shaped Italian Slavic Studies, and which are still being used for this field. This volume shows several realities of the Slavic countries in their multifaceted relations with other European cultures, and is addressed to researchers focusing only on Slavic Studies as well as to specialists from other fields who are interested in further investigating topics related to the close net of relationships between the Slavic world and the rest of Europe in the past and present

Abstract: What was the Roman Inquisition? How did inquisitors operate in the Italian society of the 16th and 17th century? In an attempt to answer these questions, the author analyses the inquisitors' familia , the Court of Faith's large group of assistants. In the light of rich unpublished records, this research is the first to reconstruct the events around the Holy Office's "staff", which consisted of vicars, notaries, lawyers, consultants, policemen, bodyguards and many others. The publication deals with the issues related to these officers, their geographic distribution and the brotherhoods used for their classification. Following this, the analysis shifts to the privileges enjoyed by the members of these "families", and the often heinous abuses they committed, demonstrating how the Inquisition became an element of social and moral disorder whenever its authority was questioned

Abstract: The anonymous Choždenie na Florentijskij sobor is one of four works written by Russian envoys to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), an event that sealed the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This article addresses the problem of that unknown author's social status, an issue of controversy in the several studies devoted to this text beginning in the 19th century. Our linguistic and stylistic analysis examines the author in terms of his cultural literacy and explores how his conception of literary standards was shaped by specific experiences of reading and writing

Abstract: This article considers the presence of modernist elements in poetry from the second half of the 20th century, focusing in particular on Russian and Ukrainian examples. We argue for the necessity of properly recognizing and analyzing modernist phenomena in a period (1960s-1980s) when these have often been eclipsed by a tendency in literary criticism to overstate the role of Postmodernism. We also examine differences in the Western and Soviet cultural contexts and in the roles that Neomodernist poetics played in the poetry of various authors, groups and texts

Moving away from a national and philological approach, we focus on interculturality and imagology. Abstract: Thanks to this fourth volume belonging to a series which well represents the Department of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Florence, it has been possible to restore a continuity, albeit with long intervals, which the editorial staff intends to consolidate by involving the entire Department's "community" (while maintaining the importance of the students' 'space'). The essays included in the volume, coming from every diachronic curriculum in the Department (pre-protohistoric, oriental, classical, medieval), bring out some trends, among which are the growth of interest in Islamic archaeology (an unexplained countertrend, nowadays), the full transversality of public archaeology or the confirmed articulation of the themes characterising the classical sector since its foundation. Furthermore, the variety of the students' backgrounds is validated, both as basic training and as an academic matrix, confirming the Department's good response to current needs and expectations

Abstract: In Europe, in the Middle Ages, ostrich feathers were used for the decoration of military headgear, as a representation of the high lineage of the possessor and his military virtues. They were imported from the coasts of West Africa, from Egypt and Syria into Italian and Spanish ports and from there exported to England and continental Europe. Venice, at the end of the fourteenth century, began to color feathers and soon the new fashion was spread throughout Europe. During the fifteenth century, even women began to use ostrich feathers on their hats or in their fans. When European ships reached America, Central Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean, a huge amount of exotic bird feathers became available and ostrich feather fad spread through the population

Abstract: Baudelaire et Wagner. "The intellectual name of love is interest", wrote Thomas Mann in his Considerations of an apolitical man (1915-1918). The interest, he specifies, "implies an emotional state that is nothing less than lukewarm", which "far exceeds in violence that of admiration'". It is not then in the panegyric, but in "malicious, even hateful" criticism, and in particular in the pamphlet (on condition "that it is spiritual and a product of passion") that this interest is found to be satisfied. The loving challenge that Thomas Mann issued at Wagner during the war is an answer, if possible, to Baudelaire's intention

Abstract: This volume offers a representative and updated selection of the themes and proposals presented during the first congress of Public Archaeology in Italy, held in Florence in 2012. Public Archaeology is one of the most dynamic and innovative sectors of the contemporary humanistic and social research, and it has progressively established itself internationally as a scientific and cultural movement for the positive innovation of the relationship between research on the past and 'new' social needs. The 2012 congress in Florence contributed to defining the priorities and methodologies of this sector, which nowadays is rapidly expanding in Italy and which over the last decade has earned a place in university courses, scientific journals and advanced design experiments

Abstract: The so-called 'digital revolution' and the economic and social transformations of the last decades have also involved university education, requiring not only some aspects of traditional lectures to adapt, but also several on-line teaching projects to be launched. A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching

Abstract: Designing Autonomy at Home. The ADA Project. An Interdisciplinary Strategy for Adaptation of the Homes of Disabled Persons. Housing adaptations are one of the main tools for improving quality of life for people with severe disabilities and for their caregivers. They are also the main tool of the ADA Project, an action research that developed a strategy to tailor adaptations to the specific user needs and profiles. After an introduction to disability, accessibility and housing adaptations, the book describes the ADA Project's goals, stages and tools. It then focuses on the main scientific outcome of the Project: the ADA Assessment Model (AdAM), an interdisciplinary tool that analyses and assesses the functional and social profile of disabled persons and their relationship with the physical environment in which they live

Abstract: With the development of research in economic history, historians are now testing the hypothesis that maritime networks and port cities contributed to the phenomenon of European integration. This essay applies a holistic approach to discuss how the city of Lisbon, located outside the privileged setting of multi-cultural interactions that was the Mediterranean Sea, became appealing to merchants from far and wide in late-medieval Europe. To do so, it examines a whole array of commercial, normative, fiscal, royal and judicial sources from European archives to discuss if it is possible to observe this phenomenon of European integration in fifteenth-century Lisbon

Abstract: This article describes the activity of a network of Corsican merchants and sailors active in the Western Mediterranean between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, in particular in Tunis, Marseille, Leghorn and the areas of Corsica under Genoa's rule. Based on early-seventeenth-century factums and memorials, and notary deeds and documents from the archives of the Record's Office of the French Consulate in Tunis, this essay describes how several families of Corsican merchants - some naturalised French in Marseille, some converted to Islam in Tunis - were part of the political and economic elites of the Mediterranean area

Abstract: International trade during the 18th century is a case in point through which to study in-depth the challenges of asymmetric information. The challenges can be divided into three categories: availability, reliability and usability of information. This article discusses the organization of trade and shipping between Northern and Southern Europe. The access, reliability and use of information were problems for merchant-shipowners during the 18th century. The solutions adopted were partly contradictory: the aim to reduce information asymmetry on one determinant, might incur costs on the other

Abstract: The present collaborative work in progress is an empirical attempt verifying the interplay between political change, fleet nationality, and the evolution of shipping networks. On the basis of historical data on ship positions retracted from archival sources, we create GIS-based online maps to conduct a geospatial analysis of the traffic intensity and movement patterns along the regional and inter-regional sea routes that connected the Venetian port system with the Mediterranean ports, with special attention to the Eastern Mediterranean. In this sense, the platform "simulates" modern real-time technologies used to visualise shipping trends per vessel types

Abstract: We live in a historical period in which it is necessary and urgent to know and relate to stories. Today, the social function of memory is stronger and more evident than ever. The concept of memory, as well as that of recollection, is widely used, but those who resort to it are not always able to fully grasp its meaning. As a matter of fact, the educational function of memory is also expressed through narration. There is no narration and writing of oneself that does not bring within the testimony of a historical time, of a social group and of a precise epoch that reveals unusual nuances and situations, eager to be discovered and to become part of the social heritage. The oral and written narration allows narrators to feel part of a community, to feel in a "warm" place, in a comfortable area and part of a community rich in mutual interest and able to guarantee the rights of all and a reciprocal recognition. Addressing the question of the memory of a community in an era of fragility, of borders, of spaces shared more and more virtually and less physically, means to contrast isolation and the relational distance between people. Life stories provide us with descriptions and observations of how we live in a place, in a territory, in a family, in a school, in a company, in any situation in which human beings have exchanged stories and have learned from each other. The intent to collect the memories of the community, through life stories, autobiographies, arises from the need to look at the traces left by those who preceded us to better understand and face the future, that is, to pay attention to micro-stories. This contribution aims at reflecting on the educational and social value of autobiographies as important instruments for observation, investigation, analysis and restitution of new insights on the community through the educator's role as a facilitator with autobiographical skills

Abstract: Public historians have definitively recognized the crucial role that museums - on par with libraries, archives, schools as well as media, cultural and tourism industry, and «all other sectors where the knowledge of the past is required to work with different audiences» (AIPH, The Italian Public History Manifesto, 2018) - can play for the development of Public History practices. In this scenario, historians of education do well know the potential that is locked up inside the historical-educational museums too. A potential that, especially in university museums, can improve academic teaching quality, promote innovative research and, finally, foster cultural and social empowerment of communities

Abstract: Social security systems are in crisis almost everywhere in the world, partly due to the bad management from the past, especially far back in time, and partly due to their intrinsic characteristics, which were not always well understood by those who designed them, and even less so by those who subsequently intervened to change them. However, removing the many layers that have gradually been added to the debate, it seems possible to focus on the few, truly relevant variables about the issue, to separate the political choices from the exogenous variables (the constraints), to bring out the consequences of the different possible choices in the long and short run, and thus to contribute to safeguarding one of the cornerstones the modern social state, even if it is downsized in the process. In doing so, it also seems appropriate to clarify the compromise point that is intended to be pursued between actuarial equity and redistribution, two unfortunately incompatible, but still very relevant goals, which have always (confusingly) been present in the debate on the social security systems

Abstract: The paper summarizes the results of a research project dedicated to Serbian archimandrite Gerasim Zelić (1758-1828), one of the main protagonists of the interconfessional polemic that engulfed the Serbian Orthodox community living in Dalmatia between the 17th and 19th centuries. Firstly, the paper describes the activities that were carried out during the project, particularly the digitalization and on-line publication of a corpus of manuscript documents connected to Zelić. Secondly, it presents the results of a historical and culturological analysis conducted on the aforementioned documents

Abstract: Detlef Heikamp's is one of the greatest scholars of the collections of historical pieces in Florence; to celebrate his 90th birthday, on the 10th an 11th November 2017, a study meeting dedicated to the birth of epigraphy as historical science was organised. The Uffizi Galleries were the ideal setting for such an initiative: there, starting from the 17th century, one of the most valuable Greek and Latin epigraphy collections was created, and it would deeply mark the evolution of this field of study; it is precisely to this institution which Detlef Heikamp decided to donate a precious selection of finds from his collection of inscriptions, in the aftermath of a disastrous attack in 1993. The most authoritative experts in the sector participated enthusiastically in the two days in Florence; their ten contributions are now collected in this volume, which offers an updated and accurate picture of the excellence of Italian research in the field of Greek and Roman epigraphy

Abstract: Intellettuali e uomini di regime nell'Italia fascista. This volume collects nine essays on political, economic and legal culture in Italy during fascism. The reconstruction of prominent personalities of the regime, such as Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata and Alberto Beneduce, are accompanied by studies analysing the at times critical, at times organic relationship between the regime and a series of reputed intellectuals, such as Vilfredo Pareto, Giuseppe Maranini, Jacopo Mazzei and Francesco A. Répaci. A chapter is dedicated to Edoardo Moroni, Minister of Agriculture during the Italian Social Republic, who after the war emigrated to Argentina, where he made a significant contribution to the agrarian reform of the country. This volume also includes two essays outside of the biographical trend: the first focuses on the theme of unemployment during Fascism, while the second presents the main aspects of the Urban Planning Act of 1942

The ports, the routes and ships, and the mentality and culture of the economic operators represent the three main themes of this study; it aims to observe and compare maritime environments which were completely different from one another, especially in terms of the size of the ports and the importance of the commercial itineraries based on them

The paper compares Dositej's work and Zelić's Žitije focusing on three levels: firstly, it tracks the common topoi and the distinctive characteristics of the two texts; secondly, it discusses the ways in which Zelić reinterprets Dositej's model, especially with respect to autobiography and travelogue; finally, it elaborates on the different yet cognate notion of authorship the two texts propose

Abstract: This work offers a new interpretation about the main groups implicated in the textile trade in Seville during the 16th century, proposing a new chronology concerning the substitution processes happened between them and the nature of the importance of those groups. This is specially clear in the longer endurance of the activity of castilian and mainly burgalese merchants in the importation of canvas, and also is remarkable the growing importance of the Castilian producction of clothes and silk (also in the Valencian case), covering an increasing share of the Peninsular and the American demand, existing cases of cooperation between those different groups

Abstract: Granito e arcobaleno. Forme e modi della scrittura auto/biografica collects essays on issues regarding relationships and their fragile balances, between reality and fiction, experience and memory, private and public, autonomy and relatedness, referential truth and subjective truth, between the self and the other. The contributions also involve concepts such as the social, cultural, geopolitical or even rhetorical space, where the auto/biographical subject is situated; the 'materiality' of the body, which perceives and internalizes the images, sensations and experiences of the external world; the agency and the linguistic, discursive, social and cultural constraints to which it is subjected. After a theoretical introduction, this volume explores individual case studies that can be traced back to different and sometimes distant cultural realities, then concludes with an artist's reflection on art and life

Abstract: Giovanni di Pagolo Morelli's Ricordi, long known to historians, are published here for the first time in an integral version which is also linguistically faithful to the original manuscript. This new critical edition is accompanied by a long introductory essay on the author, the intentions of his work and the results it had by the heirs to whom it was addressed. The 74 years of Giovanni Morelli's life, from the 1370s to the mid 1440s, are placed in a decisive time span for the history of Florence, and they are marked by a strong social mobility of which the Morellis, a family with humble origins, were the protagonists. Reading the Ricordi, and combining them with the analysis of the substantial remaining documentation borne by the author and his family, help understand the strong push to social rise which animated Morelli, and the reasons for his descendants' position among Florence's prominent family scene of the late 15th century

Abstract: Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early Middle Ages in Italy and Europe. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, namely the marque of Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional success and remained vital throughout most of the 11th century. It is also one of the areas most accounted for in sources: the documentation on the Lucca area starting from the beginning of the 8th century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study, to reflect again on overall historical transformations. This book starts from a systematic research on the documentary sources of Lucca, so wide that they are still largely unexplored, and aims at reconstructing the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society, and at following its transformation processes up to the noble and chivalric age. At the centre of the investigation lies the social segment which gradually assumed aristocratic features and a more defined profile of distinction, and promoted the foundation of castles in the countryside as well as the formation of territorial areas on which to exercise powers of command and coercion

Abstract: The thirteenth volume of Comunicazioni dell'Istituto Papirologico «G. Vitelli» is divided, as was the previous one, into three sections: 1. Editions and rieditions of texts; 2. Critical notes; 3. Chronique de lexicographie papyrologique de la vie matérielle. In the first section there are texts which are being published for the first time or which are subject to a revision and a new edition, both belonging to various collections. This section also includes the exhibition of an exceptional artefact from the Arab period, belonging to the Papyrological Institute "G. Vitelli"'s collection. The second section includes three contributions with careful palaeographic and linguistic observations on literary and documentary texts, and a fourth contribution offering an exhaustive summary of the publication state of an archive from the Institute's collection. Lastly, the third section, as consolidated by the previous volume of the Comunicazioni, collects several findings of the international research project on the lexicography of material culture (Lex.Pap.Mat.), documented in the language of papyri.

Abstract: The author moves from the case of Gerasim Zelić to ponder on the concept of "Eastern Adriatic", which generally refers to a border area where different religions, political and administrative models, languages, cultures and identities come together. Assuming that the sea is a gigantic text through which the past can be read, the author presents the Eastern Adriatic as an example of mare storia and eventually suggests to apply the concept of "multiple borderlands" to this area, whose history is actually the history of numerous large and small boundaries that deserve a painstaking description

    Keywords: History of architecture
Abstract: This book investigates the evolution of rusticated facings in perhaps one of the most significant contexts for their history, namely the architecture of the 15th century in Florence, where the development of this type of masonry intertwines with that of the buildings constructed over the century. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages. The Florence renovatio of ancient architecture passes indeed from the masonries, as pointed out by many writings from that period, which describe their contemporary rusticated facings and compare them to the massif ancient opus quadratum. While accepting the lesson on magnificence by the Julio-Claudian rustication, Florence facings would never become a faithful reproduction of the Roman models, but would always retain traditional characters and patterns, constantly oscillating between an expressive freedom and a yearning for the rigour of form

Abstract: This volume is a collection of the reports and writings presented during the Conference held in Florence on the 1st December 2017, organized by the "Piero Calamandrei - Paolo Barile" centre for political and constitutional studies on the centennial of Paolo Barile's birth. The collected speeches reconstruct Paolo Barile's life and thoughts, from his cultural and scientific training during his youth to joining the judiciary, becoming a member of the Italian Action Party, the Resistance, then his meeting with Piero Calamandrei, his studies and the career as university professor. The professorship was never really separated from his strong civil and cultural commitment, from the exercise of his beloved lawyer profession and from a constant political commitment which led him to become a Minister during Ciampi's Government in 1993

Abstract: Psychomotor education became an educational practice around the 1960s. Its history, research and practices are affected by the educational transformation of a transmission or application model of intervention towards a global and relational educational process of the person through discovery, research and active practices. Starting from these references, psychomotor education is based on a personal epistemology of knowing and learning by the subject as a global, autopoietic, dynamic system, embodied in the context of action. However, the educational dimension of psychomotricity is not limited to the educational process alone. If its origin mostly presents a re-educational matrix, development has taken on a path of prevention, support and educational, re-educational and therapeutic support. Its cultural and theoretical references are complex and interdisciplinary and emphasize the domination of the autopoietic and self-referring subject of its future

Abstract: By means of a comparative analysis of the 'Dutch case' with the Saintonge in South-West France and Bohuslän in South-West Sweden, this paper analyses the rise and decline of maritime services clusters in preindustrial Europe. The leading question for this comparative analysis is: Was the 'Dutch case' exceptional or can similar developments be recognised in other parts of Europe as well? A survey of the regional economic origins of communities of maritime transporters is combined with analyses of their operations and institutions. Relying on primary sources, the paper addresses the contribution of a great many 'anonymous' people, that literally connected the 'nodes' in international maritime trade networks, but whose contribution to the preindustrial European economy has been assumed a priori rather than thoroughly investigated

Abstract: This book is dedicated to the poetics in the Italian language that have spread around Italy over the last thirty years, also as a consequence of the migratory waves from the South-East to the North-West of the world. After years of research, the authors have selected a sample of twelve poets, who for different reasons have adopted Italian as the language of their literary expression. These authors come from the Balkans (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania), from Eastern Europe (Romania, Poland), from central-northern Europe (Austria, Germany), but also from Latin American countries (Brazil, Argentina , Chile), the Middle East (Iran and Iraq), and the Africa (Senegal). This volume features a long critical introduction and an updated bibliography, and studies the issue of migration from a cultural, literary and linguistic perspective, further investigating the work of individual poets in relation to their culture of origin and their use of the language (or languages), touching current and complex notions and issues such as otherness, interculturality, evolution of identity, migration and relationship between the multicultural and multilingual writing and the contemporary Italian poetic tradition and its canon. The unpublished interviews concluding the volume were made at the authors' places of residence and reconstruct their biographical and artistic path and their idea of language, translation, literature, home country and nationality

Abstract: The initiative to offer one Festschrift to Silvano M. Danieli for his seventieth birthday pays tribute to a man and a professional whose work has left a deep mark on human relations and on the world of libraries. Silvano, librarian at the Pontifical Theological Faculty "Marianum" and Prior of the Studio Marianum community in Rome since 2014, has indeed played a strategic role in the development of URBE, the association unifying the libraries of Rome's pontifical universities in a single network of services. The qualified list of Italian and European participants to the work is proof of the breadth of appreciation he earned in his thirty years of activity as librarian and curator of the Bibliography of the Servite Order and of the Marian Bibliography. Aelredo of Rievaulx (1109-1167), one of the leading figures of the Anglo-Saxon Cistercian monasticism, expresses the meaning of this gift with the following words: «A man, by virtue of the friendship he has towards another man, becomes a friend of God, according to what the Lord says in the Gospel: I no longer call you servants, but friends»(De spirituali amicitia, II, 14)
