Abstract: This article examines travel letters that Ljubomir Nenadović (1826-1895) wrote from Switzerland (1847), Italy (1850-1851) and Germany (1870). Marking three different phases in the literary biography of their author, these texts provide evidence of the travel letter's polyphonic nature. We argue that the dynamic shape and narrative texture of Nenadović's letters find their source in the nature of the differences that he observes and identifies, differences that distinguish these countries from his Serbian homeland and, more generally, from the cultural and geographic space of the Slavs

Abstract: With this article, we introduce our project for enlarging the Italian-Russian parallel corpus of the NKRJa (Nacional'nyj korpus russkogo jazyka) and outline several of its current and future applications. The newly expanded corpus has now reached roughly four million words, and we expect to reach 20 million, the size required for a corpus that is balanced and reliable. In order to illustrate possible applications for the Italian-Russian parallel corpus, we offer two examples: the first is its experimental use in the teaching of translation at the University of Bologna; the second its use in the context of research in Russian-Italian Contrastive Linguistics on the topic of the non-temporal qualities of the Russian future tense

Abstract: The paper is about Sergej Ivanovič Zarudnyj, a central figure in Tsar Alexander II's "great reforms". Descended from the family of a Cossack staršyna from Sloboda Ukraine, Zarudnyj had a brillant career in the imperial capital as a engaged reformer of Russia's backwards legal system. His cultural origins, his family's history, and his education at Kharkiv University deeply affected his translation work and legal discourse; in both of these spheres, he aimed to introduce and popularize the products of Italian legal culture in the Russian Empire

Abstract: From 1928 to 1932 Italy's Istituto per l'Europa orientale (Eastern European Institute) published a book series entitled "Piccola Biblioteca Slava." This was not the first book series devoted to Slavic culture nor the last. Indeed, "Piccola Biblioteca Slava" closely resembles current practice at IPEO both for the quality of its collaborators and for the importance of the topics covered. As a whole, the series constitutes a concrete attempt to introduce Slavic literatures into Italian culture and it provides a unique source for reconstructing the history of Slavic studies in Italy

Abstract: The Croatian Moderna is usually defined as the moment when Croatian literature catches up with the literary trends that were current in Europe at that time. This "turn to Europe" was made possible by a series of historical events as well as by the experiences of a number of Croatian students living abroad, who encouraged the transnational debate that would eventually revolutionize Croatian literary culture. We argue, using the terms of Pierre Bourdieu, that the transnational and cosmopolitan nature of Moderna made possible the genesis of an autonomous Croatian literary field

Abstract: In Europe, in the Middle Ages, ostrich feathers were used for the decoration of military headgear, as a representation of the high lineage of the possessor and his military virtues. They were imported from the coasts of West Africa, from Egypt and Syria into Italian and Spanish ports and from there exported to England and continental Europe. Venice, at the end of the fourteenth century, began to color feathers and soon the new fashion was spread throughout Europe. During the fifteenth century, even women began to use ostrich feathers on their hats or in their fans. When European ships reached America, Central Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean, a huge amount of exotic bird feathers became available and ostrich feather fad spread through the population

Abstract: Designing Autonomy at Home. The ADA Project. An Interdisciplinary Strategy for Adaptation of the Homes of Disabled Persons. Housing adaptations are one of the main tools for improving quality of life for people with severe disabilities and for their caregivers. They are also the main tool of the ADA Project, an action research that developed a strategy to tailor adaptations to the specific user needs and profiles. After an introduction to disability, accessibility and housing adaptations, the book describes the ADA Project's goals, stages and tools. It then focuses on the main scientific outcome of the Project: the ADA Assessment Model (AdAM), an interdisciplinary tool that analyses and assesses the functional and social profile of disabled persons and their relationship with the physical environment in which they live

Abstract: The works of Serbian theologians of the second half of the 18th century are characterized by a confessional-polemic style, as their goal was to set the sacred doctrine and the organization of liturgical life. This polemic approach was also due to the unfortunate position of the Orthodox minorities within the Austrian Monarchy, exposed as they were to the pressure of the Catholic Church. Analysing the works of the leading Serbian theologians of the time (D. Novaković, J. Rajić, Z. Orfelin), the author explains how Serbian polemical theology was created and eventually found its own formal style

Abstract: People with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) have a particular sensory sensitivity, causing their surrounding environment to affect the quality of life significantly. It is called a "spectrum", because there is a great variety of behaviours making it difficult to define universal and design criteria. These behaviours do however require a new dynamic and flexible approach, enabling the customization of the feedback to the project. Starting from the study of the specific needs of users, the environmental conditions and the design approaches, this research aims at providing innovative tools to support the design of "therapeutic" environments which could reduce the discomfort and stress related to the person's enablement, in order to include them in the social community within an integrated life project, concerning "home", applied living spaces (school, work, day centres...) and emergency conditions with respect to treatments

Abstract: "Still Blundering into Sense". Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy. This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields

Abstract: With the development of research in economic history, historians are now testing the hypothesis that maritime networks and port cities contributed to the phenomenon of European integration. This essay applies a holistic approach to discuss how the city of Lisbon, located outside the privileged setting of multi-cultural interactions that was the Mediterranean Sea, became appealing to merchants from far and wide in late-medieval Europe. To do so, it examines a whole array of commercial, normative, fiscal, royal and judicial sources from European archives to discuss if it is possible to observe this phenomenon of European integration in fifteenth-century Lisbon

Abstract: The book discusses the work of Italian Capuchins in the face of American otherness, especially in the catechism of Indians and mestizos accused of being devil's wizards. The friars faced a crisis in missionary optimism in the face of an alleged indigenous resistance to Christianity or to European social rules. The Portuguese colonial sources reveal evangelization as a field of dispute between the friars, the natives and the colonists, motivating daily conflicts, also encouraging changes in the social and symbolic traditions inside or near the missions. The indigenous people were not passive subjects in the process, contradicting the missionaries for the determination with which, supposedly, they practiced their "gentile" customs and rites. The documentation gathered adds important information to the study of indigenous peoples in contact with Capuchins in the inner territories of Portuguese America

Particularly, the author focuses on the Serbs of the Habsburg Empire and the Protestant minorities who lived within the Hungarian borders during the 18th century, who were forced to develop some specific cultural strategies in order to offset the unifying tendencies and proselyting policy of the local Catholic Church

Abstract: The article addresses textual decisions made by Čechov's editors in publishing his early short stories. We demonstrate that choices made by other editors and translators has depended crucially on the configuration of his texts found in academic editions of Čechov's Complete Works. Specifically, in the volumes that these editions devote to the young Čechov, editors place what are in fact the first versions of these short stories in the critical appendix, while furnishing as the featured examples of these texts' versions that Čechov had reviewed and retouched for collections published during his lifetime. As a result, works of the "young Čechov" are often actually works of the "mature Čechov", a situation that has led to a worldwide misunderstanding

Abstract: This article explores Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna's poem Wyznanie (Admission) in light of the author's multilingual education and constant movement across national borders. Iłłakowiczówna, who was opposed to nationalism approaches and considered Polish tradition to be of a piece with European culture, translated into Polish several masterpieces from French, English, German, Russian, Romanian, and Hungarian literary traditions. In order to demonstrate the role that different literary traditions and the visual arts played in writings such as Wyznanie, we also investigate Iłłakowiczówna's paratexts - her memoirs, talks, and letters

Abstract: This article examine handwriting textbooks from 18th-century Europe. In 1774 the court of Vienna charged Johann Ignaz Felbiger with reforming the schools and his book on penmanship (1775) became the standard reference for how to write. In 1776 the Court sought a book on penmanship to be used specifically in Serbian and Vlach schools; the textbook of Zaharija Orfelin (1778) came into being to fill this need. The textbooks of both Felbiger and Orphelin have their basis in Felbiger's first book on penmanship (1768). We also explore the possibility that other European handwriting manuals served as models for earlier works by Orfelin (1759, 1776)

Abstract: Empirio-criticism had a huge impact in Russia, where the works of Ernst Mach and Richard Avenarius works were avidly translated and discussed, while the question of whether or not their ideas could be combined with Marxism provoked many disputes within the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party or RSDRP (Rossijskaja social-demokratičeskaja rabočaja partija). Anatolij Lunačarskij, who attended Avenarius's classes and seminars in Zurich, particularly appreciated the opportunity to blend critical evaluation, emotion, and objective knowledge. In this period prior to the Revolution, Lunačarskij developed a sort of 'religious' Marxism, full of hope and enthusiasm for a final human conquest of nature, views that he continued to hold into Soviet times

Moving away from a national and philological approach, we focus on interculturality and imagology. Our conclusions unfold at the intersection of these two fields, as well as "at the edge of literature and philosophy" (in Derrida's terms), where the relationship between Croatian and Italian cultural has been shaped according to various factors - literary, political, historical and also psychological

Abstract: Thanks to this fourth volume belonging to a series which well represents the Department of Specialization in Archaeological Heritage of the University of Florence, it has been possible to restore a continuity, albeit with long intervals, which the editorial staff intends to consolidate by involving the entire Department's "community" (while maintaining the importance of the students' 'space'). The essays included in the volume, coming from every diachronic curriculum in the Department (pre-protohistoric, oriental, classical, medieval), bring out some trends, among which are the growth of interest in Islamic archaeology (an unexplained countertrend, nowadays), the full transversality of public archaeology or the confirmed articulation of the themes characterising the classical sector since its foundation. Furthermore, the variety of the students' backgrounds is validated, both as basic training and as an academic matrix, confirming the Department's good response to current needs and expectations

Abstract: Il nazional-fascismo economico del giovane Franco Modigliani. This volume is the first to reconstruct the intellectual profile of the young Franco Modigliani, who adheres to the economic and political theories of fascism by proposing avant-garde reflections on central issues of the theoretical debate: Keynesian thought, causes and remedies for the Great Crisis of 1929 , theoretical and historical reasons behind economic nationalism and fascist autarchy. After adhering to the theories of spiritual racism, Modigliani was surprised by the promulgation of the anti-Jewish laws of 1938. After arriving in the USA, Modigliani put aside the fascist and nationalist ideology, but he cultivated the study of Keynesian structures and thoughts, of which he then offered an interpretation which is still successful worldwide to the present day

Abstract: The so-called 'digital revolution' and the economic and social transformations of the last decades have also involved university education, requiring not only some aspects of traditional lectures to adapt, but also several on-line teaching projects to be launched. A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching

Abstract: Will the new technological revolution inevitably destroy work? And will we have to get used to a society creating less and less employment opportunities? Shying away from apocalyptic as well as naively optimistic predictions, the Lecture offers some points for reflection on this question, constantly recurring in the media and the public, political and scientific debate. Based on what the past taught, the future depends on business and political strategies, and even on individual social actors

Abstract: Public historians have definitively recognized the crucial role that museums - on par with libraries, archives, schools as well as media, cultural and tourism industry, and «all other sectors where the knowledge of the past is required to work with different audiences» (AIPH, The Italian Public History Manifesto, 2018) - can play for the development of Public History practices. In this scenario, historians of education do well know the potential that is locked up inside the historical-educational museums too. A potential that, especially in university museums, can improve academic teaching quality, promote innovative research and, finally, foster cultural and social empowerment of communities

Abstract: The volume Intorno a Boccaccio / Boccaccio e dintorni 2017 arises from the international seminar held in Certaldo on September 16, 2017, promoted by the ENGB National Association and now in its fourth edition. Every year, the seminar aims at giving voice to young scholars, who are invited to present their research, either concluded or current. The volume, together with the contributions on the Decameron, stands out for the attention given to other works by Boccaccio (Buccolicum carmen, Teseida, De casibus virorum illustrium), for the examination of themes which are present in multiple works (Boccaccio and the empire, Homer's biography) and for three contributions focused on the Fortleben of works and themes regarding Boccaccio

Abstract: Following Fernand Braudel's Méditerranée, historians interpreted the Mediterranean, Baltic, Atlantic, Indian Ocean or Pacific as closed maritime systems, consisting of multiple micro-environments. This essay seeks to overcome these limited perspectives and to examine, how the various seas and oceans were connected by the Vikings, the Cairo Genizah merchants and the Italian trading companies of the Middle Ages. The second part of my article "Connected Seas" examines the perception and memory of the seas as an element of maritime connectivity. It introduces the concept of realm of memory (lieu de mémoire) into maritime history and tests it in four case studies on the Sound, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the Straits of Malacca

Abstract: In recent years, the unprecedented experimental control of the laws of quantum mechanics has led to the so-called quantum technology revolution, a terminology adopted to refer to the applications in which quantum properties play a prominent role. Also the fundamental physics has benefited from these advancements with the development of quantum simulators, controlled quantum platforms engineered in such a way to emulate the physics of complex systems difficult to investigate with classical approaches. The present work deals with the simulation of some fundamental properties of quantum-Hall systems by means of degenerate fermionic Ytterbium atoms confined in artificial periodic potentials. Extreme regimes, inaccessible to real solid-state system, have been explored, paving the way to the observation of exotic phases of matter

Abstract: This volume analyses the judgement techniques and the substantial protection offered by the Italian Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights in the context of 'ethically sensitive' issues, such as medically assisted procreation and homo-affective unions. The investigation touches on different profiles of constitutional law: the multilevel protection between Rome, Strasbourg and common judges; the problematic emergence of 'new rights' in the face of scientific evolution and changing social sentiment; the dynamics between case and statutory law. The author proposes new judging techniques aimed at guaranteeing an effective protection of the interests at stake, as well as at reducing the distances between case and statutory power

Abstract: Detlef Heikamp's is one of the greatest scholars of the collections of historical pieces in Florence; to celebrate his 90th birthday, on the 10th an 11th November 2017, a study meeting dedicated to the birth of epigraphy as historical science was organised. The Uffizi Galleries were the ideal setting for such an initiative: there, starting from the 17th century, one of the most valuable Greek and Latin epigraphy collections was created, and it would deeply mark the evolution of this field of study; it is precisely to this institution which Detlef Heikamp decided to donate a precious selection of finds from his collection of inscriptions, in the aftermath of a disastrous attack in 1993. The most authoritative experts in the sector participated enthusiastically in the two days in Florence; their ten contributions are now collected in this volume, which offers an updated and accurate picture of the excellence of Italian research in the field of Greek and Roman epigraphy

Abstract: What happened to the university teachers who were expelled after the racial laws of 1938? And what about the more numerous and less known unstructured scholars who were suspended from service? What did the students who were denied university enrolment or the new graduates with no prospects for their future do? The university archives tell us nothing about this; the general aim was for scholars and students who were declared of "Jewish race" to be cancelled and forgotten. It was not a small number of them who decided to leave Italy. What were their paths and help networks? How were they treated abroad? How much did Italian culture suffer from those losses? After the war, did universities try to restore them? The expatriates who returned could have brought new knowledge and ideas, but many never returned. Why? By focusing on the relevant case of Florence, the volume investigates the minimized phenomenon of intellectual emigration for political and racial reasons. A recent past in need of consideration and reflection

Abstract: As Michel Balard pointed out with reference to the late Middle Ages and to the relations between Genoa and overseas cities, "Genoa, a colonizer in the East, is colonized by the Orientals". The aim of this work is to verify whether and to what extent this concept is applicable also to the modern age and whether it involved a wider geographic area than the one examined by this French historian. In particular we outline the features of the presence of foreign merchants in Genoa between the 16th and 18th centuries as a phenomenon complementary to the better known "diaspora" of Genoese businessmen

Abstract: Between the 18th and 19th centuries adventurism became a staple part of the bourgeois ideology of material acquisition. The paper focuses on Gerasim Zelić's Žitije, signalling how it is filled with descriptions of the struggle to reach an important social position and obtain material gain. Nevertheless, Zelić cannot be compared with contemporary adventurers, as he combines the aspiration of the Enlightenment with a strong faith in the concept of predestination, on one side, and the struggle to obtain personal gain with a strong commitment towards the common good, on the other

Abstract: Numerous and rich materials in yet unpublished archives provide information on the coproduction of several Italian and Soviet films, the first of which is Giuseppe De Santis's Attack and Retreat (1961-1964), representing almost four years' of work. This article examines radically different versions of the script, the minutes of meetings in which these scripts were reviewed by both parties, and other documents relating to process of joint production to reveal a number of curious details. We also demonstrate that this was a far from peaceful process and that the tortuous progress made by the partners was symptomatic of political and cultural issues in their countries of origin

Abstract: This article argues that the traditional picture of Russian Futurists as fiercely opposed to this war does not correspond to reality. We begin by examining the general historical background for Marinetti's notorious motto "War as the World's only Hygiene" and identify echoes of this conception in articles that Vladimir Majakovskij published in the autumn of 1914. Nationalistic and panslavic ideas, coupled with anti-German sentiments, characterized the early years of Velimir Chlebnikov's literary activity; we explore these ideas and Chlebnikov's gradual passage from this belligerent vision to his utopian project for a world without wars

Abstract: In Ruslan i Ljudmila, Puškin arranges European and Russian sources in a particular dialectic system that may be seen as illustrative of his poetics. Specifically, the poema's dedication and its theme recall the novellas of Giambattista Casti; the narrating cat in the prologue may be connected to the celebrated fables of Tieck, Perrault, and Hoffmann; events and battle scenes in the text derive from the chronicles; and Ruslan's deeds from lubočnaja literatura. Images of the "lascivious East", together with other eroticized descriptive passages point to the well-known models of Moore, Byron, Goethe, and Parny, while in the weave of Ruslan i Ljudmila's individual cantos, we find quotations from Macpherson, Ozerov, and Tasso

Abstract: The anonymous Choždenie na Florentijskij sobor is one of four works written by Russian envoys to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), an event that sealed the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This article addresses the problem of that unknown author's social status, an issue of controversy in the several studies devoted to this text beginning in the 19th century. Our linguistic and stylistic analysis examines the author in terms of his cultural literacy and explores how his conception of literary standards was shaped by specific experiences of reading and writing

Abstract: According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building

Abstract: Facing the present in relation to the past, the "outsideness" of Italian Slavic studies can be seen to represent a liminal space between the self and the Other. This article discusses how the image of the Russian poet, who is capable of both satisfying a Russian quest for uniqueness and legitimizing what Western eyes often see as Russian culture's illegibility, intersects with themes raised in the field of diversity studies. Our close analysis of texts and facts, conducted using a polycentric approach and with reference to notions of "approximation" and "contamination", acknowledges differences as a step not towards their elimination or homogenization, but towards the "translation" into one's own culture of voices that were originally distinct

We focus in particular on one exemplary case, that of Antonij Radyvylovs'kyj's Slovo pervoe na sviatyx strastoterpec kniazej Borisa i Gleba (Kyiv, 1676). We focus on the Padova manuscript, which represents Tanzlingher's mature work, to show that it differs importantly from other lexicographical works originating in 17th-century Dalmatia: while those are based on Latin models, here Tanzlingher turns for the first time to the Crusca Dictionary (Vocabolario degli Accademici della Crusca)

Abstract: In Russia, the term "Europeanism" first appeared in the 19th century. The russkij evropeec (European Russian) received a European upbringing that incorporated the moral and cultural values developed within European civilization since the 14th century and can be seen as an embodiment of the European spirit. We argue that the apogee of russkij evropeec may be represented by Maksim Maksimovič Kovalevskij (1851-1916), historian, jurist, sociologist, ethnographer, and political activist, who died on the eve of Empire's fall. This article examines the components of the European idea as they are are found in the autobiographical writings of this outstanding intellectual

Abstract: This article considers the presence of modernist elements in poetry from the second half of the 20th century, focusing in particular on Russian and Ukrainian examples. We argue for the necessity of properly recognizing and analyzing modernist phenomena in a period (1960s-1980s) when these have often been eclipsed by a tendency in literary criticism to overstate the role of Postmodernism. We also examine differences in the Western and Soviet cultural contexts and in the roles that Neomodernist poetics played in the poetry of various authors, groups and texts

Abstract: Baudelaire et Wagner. "The intellectual name of love is interest", wrote Thomas Mann in his Considerations of an apolitical man (1915-1918). The interest, he specifies, "implies an emotional state that is nothing less than lukewarm", which "far exceeds in violence that of admiration'". It is not then in the panegyric, but in "malicious, even hateful" criticism, and in particular in the pamphlet (on condition "that it is spiritual and a product of passion") that this interest is found to be satisfied. The loving challenge that Thomas Mann issued at Wagner during the war is an answer, if possible, to Baudelaire's intention

Abstract: This volume offers a representative and updated selection of the themes and proposals presented during the first congress of Public Archaeology in Italy, held in Florence in 2012. Public Archaeology is one of the most dynamic and innovative sectors of the contemporary humanistic and social research, and it has progressively established itself internationally as a scientific and cultural movement for the positive innovation of the relationship between research on the past and 'new' social needs. The 2012 congress in Florence contributed to defining the priorities and methodologies of this sector, which nowadays is rapidly expanding in Italy and which over the last decade has earned a place in university courses, scientific journals and advanced design experiments

Abstract: This work aims at identifying the historical, cultural, political and strategic reasons that in 1935 led the anarchist Camillo Berneri to write the Constitution of the Italian Federation of Socialist Municipalities (based on the Italian acronym, FICS), an original constitution project with no predecessors within the anarchist movement which, unsurprisingly, remained unpublished for a long time. The research aims at explaining its existence within the Berneri's intellectual path, interpreting it as the result of a long elaboration of his ideas and operational proposals on libertarian federalism. This maturation is characterized by the presence of different influences, with those shared with Gaetano Salvemini's concrete and problematic approach being the decisive ones

In 1941, Macrí was a notorious scholar, while Spagnoletti only a debutant poet, but their knowledge of books and magazines brought them to an intense exchange of letters, which would be interrupted in 1956 due to profound disagreements on poetry and on the assessment of Hermeticism. This correspondence, fully transcribed and carefully enriched by Andrea Giusti's notes, retraces that intellectual relationship in some decisive years of Italian history. With Fascism, war and reconstruction as a background, there is the rise of the ferment underlying cultural collaborations, of Spagnoletti's anthologist activity and of Macrí's studies on comparative literature and Spanish, which led him to become more sensitive and open towards European culture

Abstract: The paper illustrates the reasons that lead Serbian philologist Pavle Solarić not to finish his editing of Gerasim Zelić's autobiography Žitije, which was originally supposed to be published by the Venetian typography of Teodosio. It is generally assumed that ill health and ultimately death prevented Solarić from finishing his job; however, the paper speculates that Solarić may have set his editing work aside in order to give priority to other editorial activities, as well as to foster his social connections with Frederick North and with members of the Shelley Circle

Abstract: This wide-ranging theme takes Braudel's concept of the "Mediterranean" as its starting point. Braudel's vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel's concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests

Abstract: The chapter analyzes, from a diachronic perspective, the role of trade with the Levant in the port industries of Genoa, Livorno, and Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries. An historical period in which the international trade system underwent substantial changes. From the expansion of the Atlantic routes to the official claim by the United Provinces and English, to the Italian Mariner crisis and the gradual advance of Nordic fleets along the Western Mediterranean routes. The Atlantic ships had an increasing influence on Genoa's port industry. It was, however, Livorno who gained the most advantage from the presence of Dutch and English merchant ships along routes which met at Alexandretta in San Giovanni of Acre, at Constantinople, and most of all, at Smyrna

Abstract: This essay examines how the various processes of economic integration brought about by commercial exchanges were influenced by networks of merchants, by the different functions and capacities of ports, and by the various locations of routes established between the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the North Sea. The ports, the routes and ships, and the mentality and culture of the economic operators represent the three main themes of this study; it aims to observe and compare maritime environments which were completely different from one another, especially in terms of the size of the ports and the importance of the commercial itineraries based on them

Abstract: This article argues that a novel way to analyse maritime networks in premodern northern Europe is to trace the activities of people involved in conflict management. These people were traders, magistrates, judges, urban diplomats: sometimes all comprised in one person or a family. Specifically, if we take the Hanseatic city of Danzig and the Giese family as an example, it becomes apparent that these 'conflict managers' operated on various levels: the city, the region, the state, the Hanse and on the level of politics and economic policy between states and cities. Economic interests and conflicts were intertwined with political, social and cultural matters, and should be investigated together

Abstract: The refugee's gaze is always plural and not only able to grasp, but also to promote the different dimensions of culture: an event, a landscape, a human activity unfold in front of their gaze, with the memory of a different environment, far away in time, as a constant background. The first edition of the initiative Filmare l'Alterità (Filming Otherness), created by the SAGAS Department of the University of Florence, was born with a clear goal: to try and represent this gaze through mobile devices and moving images. What we asked foreign citizens living in Florence and in the neighbouring towns was to not to tell us about their life, but about ours, and to do it by starting from the urban landscape

Abstract: This work offers a new interpretation about the main groups implicated in the textile trade in Seville during the 16th century, proposing a new chronology concerning the substitution processes happened between them and the nature of the importance of those groups. This is specially clear in the longer endurance of the activity of castilian and mainly burgalese merchants in the importation of canvas, and also is remarkable the growing importance of the Castilian producction of clothes and silk (also in the Valencian case), covering an increasing share of the Peninsular and the American demand, existing cases of cooperation between those different groups

Abstract: This volume analyses the phenomenon of the thefts of sacred relics in Medieval Italy, in particular through the stealthy translationes, the hagiographic stories narrating the transfer of the relics from one place to another after they were stolen. Thanks to the study of historical contexts, narrative dynamics, literary themes and anthropological aspects, the book attempts to reconstruct the richness and complexity of the phenomenon over the centuries, tracing the history of this specific aspect of the cult of saints, which is also the history of the culture and religious imagery of the Middle Ages

Abstract: This paper contributes to the discussion of merchant networks in late medieval Europe by presenting a case study of the Soranzo fraterna, a Venetian trading firm which comprised brothers Donado, Giacomo (Jacopo), Piero, and Lorenzo Soranzo and operated in the first half of the 15th century, specializing mainly in the import of raw cotton from Syria. The author applies the methodology of so-cial network analysis (SNA) in order to reconstruct the egocentric (ego-centered) network of ties linking the Soranzo firm ("the ego") with its partners and clients ("alters")

Abstract: Between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries commerce in northern Europe expanded and contracted. The long term net effect of the trade increase was an overall substantial impact on the economy and on the culture of the lands around the North and Baltic Seas. The development of interdependent markets can be indicated by examining the tendency of prices to converge in different places. Relying on previous research and novel ways of constructing indices using price data from a number of ports in northern Europe it is possible to confirm both the long term direction, with ups and downs, toward market integration as well as the emergence in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries of regional markets in certain food grains

Abstract: In HTML pages the language of the document content is indicated by so-called language tags. The present paper explores the various meanings the primary language subtag can denote within the context of 18th and early 19th century literary Serbian. Particular attention is paid to the status of slavenosrpski. As has been shown before when using ISO language tags, their meaning is too broad for direct application within linguistic analyses. The primary subtags will therefore have to be extended, along the lines defined in BCP 47, in order to arrive at meaningful language tags

Abstract: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities

Abstract: Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early Middle Ages in Italy and Europe. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, namely the marque of Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional success and remained vital throughout most of the 11th century. It is also one of the areas most accounted for in sources: the documentation on the Lucca area starting from the beginning of the 8th century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study, to reflect again on overall historical transformations. This book starts from a systematic research on the documentary sources of Lucca, so wide that they are still largely unexplored, and aims at reconstructing the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society, and at following its transformation processes up to the noble and chivalric age. At the centre of the investigation lies the social segment which gradually assumed aristocratic features and a more defined profile of distinction, and promoted the foundation of castles in the countryside as well as the formation of territorial areas on which to exercise powers of command and coercion

Abstract: This paper analyses the rise of Swedish trade and shipping in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century. It focuses on three factors that shaped Sweden's role in the area: foreign policy interest, foreign trade policy (mercantilism), and commodity demand and supply. The foreign policy interest is represented by attempts to build an alliance with the Ottoman Empire against Russia. An outcome of this was the short-lived Swedish Levant Company. The second factor relates to Sweden's mercantilist policy in the Mediterranean, embodied in the Swedish Navigation Act, trade and peace treaties with the North-African states, and the consular services in southern Europe. Sea salt was in the core of this policy-a strategic commodity in northern Europe. Southern Europe, too, was important market for Swedish exports goods: iron, tar and pitch, and planks

Abstract: This volume, organised in thirty-two essays written by thirty-five among the most successful Italian scholars in the field of Slavic Studies, offers an extensive overview of the studies which have been conducted in Italy on Slavic literature, philology, linguistics, history and culture in recent years. Overall, the work highlights the great variety of paths and lines of research which shaped Italian Slavic Studies, and which are still being used for this field. This volume shows several realities of the Slavic countries in their multifaceted relations with other European cultures, and is addressed to researchers focusing only on Slavic Studies as well as to specialists from other fields who are interested in further investigating topics related to the close net of relationships between the Slavic world and the rest of Europe in the past and present

Abstract: The author moves from the case of Gerasim Zelić to ponder on the concept of "Eastern Adriatic", which generally refers to a border area where different religions, political and administrative models, languages, cultures and identities come together. Assuming that the sea is a gigantic text through which the past can be read, the author presents the Eastern Adriatic as an example of mare storia and eventually suggests to apply the concept of "multiple borderlands" to this area, whose history is actually the history of numerous large and small boundaries that deserve a painstaking description

The collected speeches reconstruct Paolo Barile's life and thoughts, from his cultural and scientific training during his youth to joining the judiciary, becoming a member of the Italian Action Party, the Resistance, then his meeting with Piero Calamandrei, his studies and the career as university professor. The professorship was never really separated from his strong civil and cultural commitment, from the exercise of his beloved lawyer profession and from a constant political commitment which led him to become a Minister during Ciampi's Government in 1993

Abstract: Teaching the history of education to future educators? One possible way to avoid the sclerotization of the discipline into an excessive focus on handbooks is to conceive it as a public history practice, interrogating specific cases under the lens of different historiographic paradigms. The goal will then be to promote "historical thinking" in the future educator as a training ground for exercising doubt and critical citizenship

Abstract: The histaminergic system is a pleiotropic system that commands general states of metabolism and consciousness, including learning and memorizing both pleasurable and aversive events. Brain histamine mediates the central effects of a signal molecule produced in the intestine, namely oleoylethanolamide (OEA). OEA is released by the enterocytes in response to high fat intake and reduces eating, by indirectly activating a subpopulation of histaminergic neurons. In her thesis, she explored other potential interactions between these two systems in the pursuit of unexplored neuronal mechanisms that may shed light on the mode of action of psychoactive agents and possibly lead to the development of new drugs

Abstract: Between the 14th and 15th centuries, a dense network of trade relations was active in the maritime basin of the western Mediterranean. The three regional areas that overlooked this sea, the Iberian and Provencal, the Italian and the African, and all the islands that were present in it, were equipped with numerous and important landing points and were connected by a dense network of exchanges. The essay takes into consideration the characteristics of this network of economic and cultural connections, and analyzes, particularly through the use of the Datini Archive, the role of the port of Rome in this system of exchanges and the links that merchants and bankers who acted in this city entertained with the Iberian mercantile centers

Abstract: Connettivi tedeschi e poeticità: l'attivazione dell'interprete tra forma e funzione. Studio teorico e analisi di un caso esemplare. Starting from Jakobson's definition of poeticalness, the volume studies the mechanisms by which connectors, such as linguistic signs assigned to the connection between parts of speech, contribute to the poeticalness in a text, which is here intended as a textual peculiarity capable of activating the interpreter in the tout court language, but mainly in the literary text. The first two chapters of this volume offer an overview of the theoretical and methodological foundations that justify the choice to acquire the connectors as possible indicators of poeticalness, and also a preparatory introduction to the third chapter, where there is the description of the results from a study on the syntax and semantics of the connector in in a collection of German poetry texts from the first half of the 20th century

Abstract: Granito e arcobaleno. Forme e modi della scrittura auto/biografica collects essays on issues regarding relationships and their fragile balances, between reality and fiction, experience and memory, private and public, autonomy and relatedness, referential truth and subjective truth, between the self and the other. The contributions also involve concepts such as the social, cultural, geopolitical or even rhetorical space, where the auto/biographical subject is situated; the 'materiality' of the body, which perceives and internalizes the images, sensations and experiences of the external world; the agency and the linguistic, discursive, social and cultural constraints to which it is subjected. After a theoretical introduction, this volume explores individual case studies that can be traced back to different and sometimes distant cultural realities, then concludes with an artist's reflection on art and life

Abstract: The two major ports on the French Atlantic coast have many points in common, including the facilities of relations with their hinterland. But, in the sixteenth century, they had a very different destiny. Bordeaux was a passive port, waiting for the ships to load the products offered by its merchants (wine, pastel) and redistributing it in its hinterland. Rouen had to supply Paris and the Paris region, to bring raw materials for the Normandy industry and to look for outlets for its productions: this port therefore quickly turned to distant destinations where it could satisfy the needs of its economy

Abstract: Glass structures are being built ever more frequently all over the world, in a growing architectural trend towards light, transparency and sustainability. The engineering design of laminated glass elements being profoundly influenced by properties of interlayers, this multi-scale research highlights some among the key elements on the hyperelastic and viscoplastic response of such synthetic materials. Results and new discoveries are interpreted to better model and predict the response of laminated glass structures: examples are provided for design applications to post-failure safety assessments, structural design and cold-bending techniques. Still, in a vastly unknown field, a growing market and foggy regulatory framework, many challenges and research opportunities remain to be dealt with

Abstract: While travelling across Europe, the enlightened Orthodox monk Gerasim Zelić mentally never abandons his native Dalmatia. Moving from his Žitije, which is essentially a travelogue, the paper aims to analyse the tension between the open-minded, secular Zelić and the other Zelić, who identified himself with the Orthodox traditions of Dalmatia without knowing how to adjust them to modernity. According to the author, his rational head and his romantic heart make his global outlook deeply controversial and his mentality typical of a Homo Mediterraneus

Abstract: This paper, basing its analysis on England's national customs accounts between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, briefly examines England's ports as commercial nodes (of which London was the busiest, with Hull, Southampton and Bristol becoming the main regional hubs by the fifteenth century), its shipping (which provided both liner and tramping services and sailed all year round), and its exports (which shifted from wool to woollen cloth over the period). It then focuses on the range of markets with which English merchants and ships had direct maritime contacts
