Mobolanle Sotunsa is a professor of Gender Studies and African Oral Literature at Babcock University, Nigeria.     Abstract: In 2015 many camps were opened to accommodate newly arriving migrants in Berlin. Christian Sowa studies this form of accommodation. Moving beyond an exclusive focus on borders and migration, he argues that camp accommodation must be thought of and studied as part of the urban context and as a specific form of housing. The study provides an in-depth case study, discusses policy alternatives, argues for »housing for all instead of camps«, and contributes to bringing urban and migration studies into public discussion. In times of new waves of migration, the topic of migrant accommodation within urban environments remains highly relevant today.

    Abstract: Welchen unsichtbaren Zwängen unterliegen wir beim Sprechen über Literatur? Dieser Frage widmet sich Emmanuel Breite anhand der spezifischen Praxis des Literaturunterrichts. Seine These: Das dortige Handlungsfeld ist durch eine neoliberale Ideologie geprägt, die nicht vom Sprechen über Literatur zu trennen ist. Ergebnis davon ist die Hervorbringung einer spezifischen Form des Subjektseins, die mit den Dogmen der neoliberalen Ideologie kompatibel ist. Der Deutschunterricht wird so zum Ort, an dem sich verschiedene Machtverhältnisse kreuzen und sich die neoliberalen Logiken im Verständnis der Schüler*innen verfestigen - eine Kritik, die weit über die kompetenztheoretische Ausrichtung des Unterrichts hinausragt

    Abstract: Weder in der Technikphilosophie noch in der technischen Bildung besteht Übereinkunft hinsichtlich der Verwendung des Begriffs Technik. Da verwundert es nicht, dass auch die empirische Erforschung des Technikbegriffs von Kindern und Jugendlichen ein Forschungsdesiderat darstellt. Im Rahmen der hier vorgelegten Arbeit soll diesem Desiderat nachgegangen werden. Mittels Alltagssprachlichem Struktur-Lege-Spiel und Fragebogen wird untersucht, welche subjektiven Vorstellungen Kinder und Jugendliche bezüglich des Begriffs Technik zum Ausdruck bringen und wie stabil diese Begriffe sind. Die Aussagen der Kinder und Jugendlichen werden mittels strukturierender Inhaltsanalyse ausgewertet. Im Zentrum steht dabei das entwickelte Kategoriensystem, mit dem die Technikbegriffe aus den kindlichen bzw. jugendlichen Aussagen erfasst werden. Zusammenfassend lässt sich festhalten, dass keine typischen Technikbegriffe aus dem Datenmaterial herausgearbeitet werden können. Die Technikbegriffe der befragten Kinder und Jugendlichen unterscheiden sich stark. Allerdings kann gezeigt werden, dass die Kinder und Jugendlichen zum Teil scharfsinnige Gedanken über Technik zum Ausdruck bringen

    Abstract: The purpose of this book is to showcase a diverse set of directions in empirical research on mediated discourse, reflecting on the state-of-the-art and the increasing intersection between Corpus-based Interpreting Studies (CBIS) and Corpus-based Translation Studies (CBTS). Undeniably, data from the European Parliament (EP) offer a great opportunity for such research. Not only does the institution provide a sizeable sample of oral debates held at the EP together with their simultaneous interpretations into all languages of the European Union. It also makes available written verbatim reports of the original speeches, which used to be translated. From a methodological perspective, EP materials thus guarantee a great degree of homogeneity, which is particularly valuable in corpus studies, where data comparability is frequently a challenge. In this volume, progress is visible in both CBIS and CBTS. In interpreting, it manifests itself notably in the availability of comprehensive transcription, annotation and alignment systems. In translation, datasets are becoming substantially richer in metadata, which allow for increasingly refined multi-factorial analysis. At the crossroads between the two fields, intermodal investigations bring to the fore what these mediation modes have in common and how they differ. The volume is thus aimed in particular at Interpreting and Translation scholars looking for new descriptive insights and methodological approaches in the investigation of mediated discourse, but it may be also of interest for (corpus) linguists analysing parliamentary discourse in general

    Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Social and economic progress but also the brute treatment of people and nature throughout Europe were possible due to the use of urban planning and the other levels of spatial planning. Thereby, planning has constituted itself in Europe as an international subject. Since its emergence, through intense exchange but also competition, despite country differences, planning has developed as a European field of practice and scientific discipline. Planning is here much more than the addition of individual histories; however, historiography has treated this history very selective regarding geography and content. This book searches for an understanding of the historiography of planning in a European dimension. Scholars from Eastern and Western, Southern and Northern Europe address the issues of the public led production of city and the social functions of urban planning in capitalist and state-socialist countries. The examined examples include Poland and USSR, Czech Republic and Slovakia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, Portugal and Spain, Italy, and Sweden. The nativism hypothesis, which assumes that humans posses genetically determined innate language-specific knowledge, is critically examined and alternative models of language acquisition are discussed. The second part then addresses controversial issues of current theory building such as the question of flat or binary branching structures being more appropriate, the question whether constructions should be treated on the phrasal or the lexical level, and the question whether abstract, non-visible entities should play a role in syntactic analyses. It is shown that the analyses suggested in the respective frameworks are often translatable into each other. The book closes with a chapter showing how properties common to all languages or to certain classes of languages can be captured

Das ist eine herausragende Leistung, die ein Grundinteresse adressiert, das nicht nur die Musiksoziologie, sondern die Soziologie und Sozialtheorie gleichermaßen betrifft: Wie gelingt es Handelnden, gemeinsam Soziales zu erschaffen? Die Untersuchung baut auf Alfred Schütz‘ klassischem Aufsatz „Gemeinsam Musizieren“ auf und folgt der Frage, wie es Musiker:innen gelingt, mit Noten und Instrumenten gemeinsam zu musizieren und wie dies durch die Spielenden erlebt wird. Sie wird anhand von Streichensembles untersucht, die ohne Dirigierende musizieren. Durch die Integration von Videographie, fokussierter und lebensweltanalytischer Ethnographie wird der Blick keineswegs auf situatives Musizieren verengt, sondern die institutionelle und organisationale Ordnung des Forschungsfeldes systematisch integriert.     Abstract: This book comprises 40 short texts by urban sustainability scholars from around the globe. The scholars are recipients of a six-month research stay grant from the Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), a DAAD Exceed center funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). SMUS is a global network of researchers and practitioners from over 48 universities and institutions who work together to improve academic education in spatial disciplines. Through collaborative teaching, workshops, conferences, and training, network partners work across disciplines to advance urban sustainability. From September 2020 through February 2021, 40 scholars participated in the centre’s ‘Developing a PhD Proposal’ program by organising workshops, partaking in excursions, and attending classes. The classes covered topics such as research ethics and skills, spatial methods, and urban sustainability, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal #11, which is about ‘making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable’. As part of their coursework, the students were tasked with writing short texts about how the topics covered manifest themselves in their respective home countries. This book is a compilation of those country replies, giving the reader a glimpse into urban sustainability perspectives from around the globe. The book includes a series of maps depicting the geographic locations represented in the country replies. They have been included to help the reader navigate the book and to highlight the diversity of topics and themes researchers are working on in the SMUS network.

Die Verfasser*innen der Texte waren Teil eines sechsmonatigen Forschungsstipendiums des Global Center of Spatial Methods for Urban Sustainability (SMUS), einem vom Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ) geförderten DAAD exceed-Zentrum. SMUS ist ein globales Netzwerk, von Wissenschaftler*innen und Fachkräften aus über 48 Universitäten und Institutionen, das sich zum Ziel setzt raumbezogene Disziplinen durch Forschung und Lehre zu fördern. Durch gemeinsame Lehrveranstaltungen, Workshops, Konferenzen und Fortbildungen arbeiten die Netzwerkpartner interdisziplinär an der Umsetzung der urbanen Nachhaltigkeit.     Abstract: This book, drawing on fresh scholarship, investigates electrification in new places and across different time periods. While much of our understanding of electrification as a historical process is based on the seminal work done by Thomas P. Hughes in Networks of Power (1983), the scholars in this volume expand and revise Hughes’ systems approach to suggest that electrification is a heterogeneous and contingent process. Moreover, the contributors suggest that the conquest of the world by electricity remains incomplete despite more than a century elapsing. Above all, though, this book provides context for thinking about what lies ahead as humans continue their conquest of the earth through electricity. As we become increasingly dependent on electricity to power our lights, heat and cool our homes, turn the wheels of industry, and keep our information systems humming, so we are ever more vulnerable when the grid runs into trouble.     Abstract: Klappentext: Diese interdisziplinäre Studie untersucht Lyrik, die in städtischen Räumen zu sehen oder zu hören ist. Aus literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive interessieren vor allem die Ästhetik, Sprachgestaltung und Ortsbezüglichkeit der präsentierten Lyrik, aus stadtsoziologischer Sicht die Einbindung der Projekte in stadtpolitische Konstellationen, Debatten über öffentliche Räume und ihr Beitrag zur Produktion des jeweiligen Raums. Das Spektrum der analysierten Lyrikprojekte ist vielfältig. Es reicht von Wandgedichten an Hausfassaden und Audiowalks in Stadtvierteln über Gedichte auf Lesezeichen, die vom Hubschrauber auf öffentliche Plätze abgeworfen werden, oder großformatige Projektionen an repräsentative Gebäude einer Stadt bis zu informellen, durch Dichter:innen oder Anwohner:innen initiierte Formen, etwa Gedichte auf kopierten Zetteln, die in Parks oder U-Bahnen aufgehängt werden und derart ihr "Recht auf Stadt" (Henri Lefebvre) beanspruchen. Lyrikprojekte in urbanen Räumen wurden bisher nicht untersucht. Die Studie schließt nicht nur dieses Desiderat der Lyrikforschung, sondern bietet durch den interdisziplinären Ansatz kreative Interpretationen von Gedichten in städtischen Kontexten, die für ein breites Lesepublikum interessant sind.

    Abstract: Klappentext: This book’s goal is to determine the significance of visual culture in the production of contemporary poetry and to sound out the insights poetry might generate into contemporary visual culture. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. It covers poetry in English, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, and also multilingual works.
