Abstract: As the art that calls most attention to temporality, music provides us with profound insight into the nature of time, and time equally offers us one of the richest lenses through which to interrogate musical practice and thought. In this volume, musical time, arrayed across a spectrum of genres and performance/compositional contexts is explored from a multiplicity of perspectives. The contributions to the volume all register the centrality of time to our understanding of music and music-making and offer perspectives on time in music, particularly though not exclusively attending to contemporary forms of musical work. In sharing insights drawn from philosophy, music theory, ethnomusicology, psychology of performance and cultural studies, the book articulates a range of understandings on the metrics, politics and socialities woven into musical time.

Abstract: This book addresses the need to rethink the concept and enactment of professionalism in music, and how such concepts underpin professional higher music education. There is an urgent imperative to enable the potential of professional musicians in our contemporary societies to be more fully realised, recognising both intense challenges that are currently threatening some traditional music practices, and significant scope for new practices to be imagined in response to deep veins of societal need. Professionalism encompasses the conduct, aims, values, responsibilities and ongoing development of a practising professional in the field. Professional higher music education engages both with providing future professionals with relevant education in particular craft skills, and with nurturing their visions for their work as artists in future societies. The major focus of the book is on performance traditions that have dominated professional higher education, notably western classical music

Abstract: From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, jazz was harnessed as America’s "sonic weapon" to promote an image to the world of a free and democratic America. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Abstract: A Biography of the Ney -- Breath and Reed -- Mode and Mood -- Improvisation and Journey -- Master Speakers, Master Listeners -- Music and Ethical Modification -- Musical Islam
Abstract: "This project is the first book length study of the ney, the Sufi reed flute long associated with Islam and disdained after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Based on extensive field research and an apprentice-style method of inquiry, the book explores the remarkable revival of ney-playing among urban dwellers in Turkey today: in Istanbul and other urban centers, and in a plethora of new pedagogical sites ranging from private ney studios to cultural and religious associations, from university clubs to local mosque organizations. The author, Banu Şenay, documents the lifelong preparation required to become a skilled practitioner of the ney, examining in particular the transformative power of this Islamic art pedagogy to cultivate new aesthetic and ethical perceptions in learners. Şenay's ethnography shows how the learning process transcends musical technique, entailing not only an embodied, sensory disciplining of the body, but socialization of learners into new ways of being as well as into new ways of relating to other selves. Exploring firsthand the practical process of musical teaching and learning, together with its ethical scaffolding, the book has theoretical implications for scholars studying many forms of apprentice-style learning. It also helps redress the underdeveloped understandings and often-polemical claims made in both the media and by Islamophobic discourse concerning processes by which Muslims develop a religious and moral sense"--
