Abstract: The virtues of legal time --The vices of legal time -- Jus temporis or the immigrant's right to human time -- Conclusion : the crticial state of jus temporis in European migration law.
Abstract: "In this novel study, Martijn Stronks shines a light on the ways in which European migration law operates by examining relevant legal processes through the prism of "time." Even as he notes that "[t]ime is allegedly the most widely used noun in the English language," Stronks demands that we critically interrogate this commonplace notion - and specifically that we should differentiate between "human time" and "clock time." His contention is that human time is largely overlooked in migration processes, and that this failure to take account of time as lived experience does a real injustice to migrants. Much of the book is devoted to explicating what the author refers to as "the slithering character of legal time" - which he argues fails to recognize that human time cannot be stopped, that time traveling in actual human time is not possible, and that there is a dissonance between eternal and mortal time. Stronks then makes the case for decentering the place of legal time and giving more attention to human time, noting the countervailing tendency in European law to insist that durable presence in a state's territory gives rise to a claim for inclusion. This, then, is the legal toehold that should allow us to take human time more seriously in the migration realm"--

Abstract: "This handbook intends to offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the human rights implications of emerging technologies in the fields of life sciences and information and communication technologies (ICT). To this end, the volume brings together leading experts whose expertise encompasses several disciplinary domains (law, ethics, technology, basic science, medicine, business, etc.) with purposes of gathering extensive multidisciplinary knowledge about the evolutive transformation of the human rights framework in response to technological innovation. In particular, the aim of this volume is threefold. First, it aims to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art report on emerging technologies that are likely to transform the human rights framework in the upcoming decades. Second, this collection of essays aims to raise awareness of the ethically and legally appropriate implementation of these technologies and to identify possible critical issues that arise or might arise in the context of their application. Third, and ultimately, the volume intends to contribute to the development of a robust, inclusive, and anticipatory human rights framework that can guide global societies across the ongoing digital transformation. In doing so, special attention is devoted to promoting policies and regulatory frameworks that foster the inalienable rights of individuals and the prevention of potential inappropriate uses or abuses of emerging technologies"--

Abstract: "This volume advances a framework for analyzing and thinking about transnational law and transnational legal regimes. It approaches transnational 'law' as consisting of that collection of transnational institutions and practices with which persons with legal training are increasingly being asked to or invited to engage. Its purpose, correspondingly, is to facilitate such engagement: to help the legal actor better understand what to look for, and what the practical and normative implications of what she finds are, when she encounters such institutions and practices. It does this by identifying the various 'facets' of transnational institutions and practices that are most interest to persons working from the perspective of law (e.g., bases of legitimacy, regulatory activities, governance structures); exploring how different regulatory regimes structure these facets in different ways in order to serve different regulatory purposes; and investigating how a regulatory regime's choice as to how to structure any one of these facets affects what the other facets of that regime can and cannot do effectively and, beyond that, the reach and shape of the regime's overall legitimacy"--

Abstract: With their widespread use in the Global South, mobile phones are attracting growing interest from international aid actors and local authorities alike, who are positioning mobile technology as a growth driver and a solution to many social problems. Initiated by giants of the digital industry, these policies are reviving old questions about technological development, the relationship between the market sector and States, and the role of technology in the inequalities between the Global North and Global South. Through a multi-sited ethnography on maternal care in Ghana and India, this Element provides a first-hand look at initiatives that promise to improve poor women's health in the Global South through the use of mobile phones; a field known as Mobile Health or mHealth. Attentive to the way in which these technical objects modify power relations at both international and local levels, this Element also discusses how mHealth transforms care practices and healthcare.

Abstract: "This introduction provides an overview of the disaster law and policy topics explored in the chapters that follow. Before sharing that overview, there are a few threshold questions to consider. What does the word "disaster" mean? What concerns are reasonably encompassed by the field of disaster law and policy? And where might disaster law and policy be headed in its evolution as a field of practice and study? The answer to each of these questions is malleable, and the developing and dynamic nature of disaster law and policy is reflected in the contributions the chapter authors have made to this volume. The Handbook's foreword and thirty-three chapters highlight a range of ongoing efforts to advance international, national, and local responses to disasters as well as plans to prepare for them. We offer here brief initial thoughts on three foundational considerations"--

Abstract: "Transitional justice has become the principle lens used by countries emerging from conflict and authoritarian rule to address the legacies of violence and serious human rights abuses. However, as transitional justice practice becomes more institutionalized with support from NGOs and funding from Western donors, questions have been raised about the long-term effectiveness of transitional justice mechanisms. Core elements of the paradigm have been subjected to sustained critique, yet there is much less commentary that goes beyond critique to set out, in a comprehensive fashion, what an alternative approach might look like. This volume discusses one such alternative, transformative justice, and positions this quest in the wider context of ongoing fall-out from the 2008 global economic and political crisis, as well as the failure of social justice advocates to respond with imagination and ambition. Drawing on diverse perspectives, contributors illustrate the wide-ranging purchase of transformative justice at both conceptual and empirical levels"

Abstract: "Women and the Islamic Republic's central argument is simple: If we shift our gaze from institutions and elite political contestations to everyday encounters, we can see how the Islamic Republic's hybrid governance structure produces citizens who cross, abide, and (at times) manipulate the state's formal boundaries. This pushes the post-revolutionary state toward a balancing act to pacify its female population"--

Abstract: "I have always thought that Patrick Glenn's personal features, his modest and unassuming way of communicating, his persistent open-mindedness to new and others' arguments, also lie at the core of his scholarly work. In the following pages, I will try to show this connection by putting in context and in perspective his legacy as a scholar. Notwithstanding his impressive production, there is no doubt that Patrick Glenn will be long remembered for his opus magnum and for the debates it triggered. In my view, Legal Traditions of the World1 is grounded upon three key notions: Law, Tradition, and Conciliation. I will address these notions critically and sequentially, as if they were strands of a thread through which both Patrick Glenn's personality and scholarship are woven"--

Abstract: Christian and Muslim schools have become important target points in families and pupils' quests for new study opportunities and securing a 'good life' in Tanzania. These schools combine secular education with the moral (self-)formation of young people, triggering new realignments of the fields of education with interreligious co-existence and class formation in the country's urban centres. Hansjörg Dilger explores the emerging entanglements of faith, morality, and the educational market in Dar es Salaam, thereby shedding light on processes of religious institutionalisation and their individual and collective embodiment. By contextualising these dynamics through analysis of the politics of Christian-Muslim relations in postcolonial Tanzania, this book shows how the field of education has shaped the positions of these highly diverse religious communities in diverging ways. In doing so, Dilger suggests that students and teachers' religious experience and practice in faith-oriented schools are shaped by the search for socio-moral belonging as well as by the power relations and inequalities of an interconnected world.

Abstract: This volume brings together critical legal scholarship and theories of forced migration that draw attention to the dual role of law as it pertains to transitional justice and mass violence resulting in forced population movements. Contributors to the volume analyze how forced migration in the Global South have impacted contemporary realities. While there has been considerable focus on refugees and asylum seekers from conflict zones, there is less attention paid to the far more numerous internally displaced peoples (IDPs), stateless people, warehoused refugees, non-status displaced and returnees in the Global South. In this volume, a multidisciplinary group of scholars question the reasons behind the restrictive choices that lock us into area studies modalities instead of genuine interdisciplinary analysis by linking the traditional subject matter of transitional justice with the realities of forced migration in the Global South.

Abstract: "The book builds on discussions about nineteenth century port city society in late Ottoman urban and cultural history, but approaches them from a more European and Mediterranean perspective. Revisiting leisure practises, the formation of class, gender, and national identities, it also offers an alternative view on the relationship of the Islamic World to Europe. While the nineteenth century Eastern Mediterranean became a zone of influence for the Great Powers, port city residents seized on what they perceived to be the European Dream, hoping to integrate into a wider world and revolutionize urban culture. They adapted European forms, but modified them according to local needs, as was the case for the new quays, streets, and buildings. Entertainment became a marker of a Europeanized way of life. The opera was a possibility for participating in a global civilizing mission. Consuming beer celebrated innovation, cosmopolitanism, and mixed gender sociability. Much like elsewhere in Europe, port city inhabitants were men and women "without qualities" when it came to identity: the possibilities to style the self overburdened many of them. Moreover, the respective nationalist discourses of the era sought to rein in free development. In the years prior to World War I, the pro-European mood was eclipsed by a more xenophobic atmosphere"--
Abstract: Eastern Mediterranean port cities, such as Constantinople, Smyrna, and Salonica, have long been sites of fascination. Known for their vibrant and diverse populations, the dynamism of their economic and cultural exchanges, and their form of relatively peaceful co-existence in a turbulent age, many would label them as models of cosmopolitanism. In this study, Malte Fuhrmann examines changes in the histories of space, consumption, and identities in the nineteenth and early twentieth century while the Mediterranean became a zone of influence for European powers. Giving voice to the port cities' forgotten inhabitants, Fuhrmann explores how their urban populations adapted to European practices, how entertainment became a marker of a Europeanized way of life, and consuming beer celebrated innovation, cosmopolitanism and mixed gender sociability. At the same time, these adaptations to a European way of life were modified according to local needs, as was the case for the new quays, streets, and buildings. Revisiting leisure practises as well as the formation of class, gender, and national identities, Fuhrmann offers an alternative view on the relationship between the Islamic World and Europe.

Abstract: With its emphasis on emerging and cutting-edge debates in the study of comparative constitutional law and politics, its suitability for both research and teaching use, and its distinguished and diverse cast of contributors, this handbook is a must-have for scholars and instructors alike. This versatile volume combines the depth and rigor of a scholarly reference work with features for teaching in law and social science courses. Its interdisciplinary case-study approach provides political and historical as well as legal context: each modular chapter offers an overview of a topic and a jurisdiction, followed by a case study that simultaneously contextualizes both. Its forward-looking and highly diverse selection of topics and jurisdictions fills gaps in the literature on the Global South as well as the West. A timely section on challenges to liberal constitutional democracy addresses pressing concerns about democratic backsliding and illiberal and/or authoritarian regimes.

Abstract: What makes bureaucracy work for the least advantaged? Across the world, countries have adopted policies for universal primary education. Yet, policy implementation is uneven and not well understood. Making Bureaucracy Work investigates when and how public agencies deliver primary education across rural India. Through a multi-level comparative analysis and more than two years of ethnographic field research, Mangla opens the 'black box' of Indian bureaucracy to demonstrate how differences in bureaucratic norms - informal rules that guide public officials and their everyday relations with citizens - generate divergent implementation patterns and outcomes. While some public agencies operate in a legalistic manner and promote compliance with policy rules, others engage in deliberation and encourage flexible problem-solving with local communities, thereby enhancing the quality of education services. This book reveals the complex ways bureaucratic norms interact with socioeconomic inequalities on the ground, illuminating the possibilities and obstacles for bureaucracy to promote inclusive development.

Abstract: "In the past twenty years, there have been exciting new developments in the field of anthropology. This second edition of Barnard's classic textbook on the history and theory of anthropology has been revised and expanded to include up-to-date coverage on all the most important topics in the field. Its coverage ranges from traditional topics like the beginnings of the subject, evolutionism, functionalism, structuralism, and Marxism, to ideas about globalization, post-colonialism, and notions of 'race' and of being 'indigenous'. There are several new chapters, along with an extensive glossary, index, dates of birth and death, and award-winning diagrams. Although anthropology is often dominated by trends in Europe and North America, this edition makes plain the contributions of trendsetters in the rest of the world too. With its comprehensive yet clear coverage of concepts, this is essential reading for a new generation of anthropology students"--

Abstract: How did Hong Kong transform itself from a 'shoppers' and capitalists' paradise' into a 'city of protests' at the frontline of a global anti-China backlash? CK Lee situates the post-1997 China–Hong Kong contestation in the broader context of 'global China.' Beijing deploys a bundle of power mechanisms – economic statecraft, patron-clientelism, and symbolic domination – around the world, including Hong Kong. This Chinese power project triggers a variety of countermovements from Asia to Africa, ranging from acquiescence and adaptation to appropriation and resistance. In Hong Kong, reactions against the totality of Chinese power have taken the form of eventful protests, which, over two decades, have broadened into a momentous decolonization struggle. More than an ideological conflict between a liberal capitalist democratizing city and its Communist authoritarian sovereign, the Hong Kong story, stunning and singular in its many peculiarities, offers lessons about China as a global force.

Abstract: In the first comprehensive English-language portrait of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as political thinkers and actors, Jakob Norberg reveals how history's two most famous folklorists envisioned the role of literary and linguistic scholars in defining national identity. Convinced of the political relevance of their folk tale collections and grammatical studies, the Brothers Grimm argued that they could help disentangle language groups from one another, redraw the boundaries of states in Europe, and counsel kings and princes on the proper extent and character of their rule. They sought not only to recover and revive a neglected native culture for a contemporary audience, but also to facilitate a more harmonious and enduring relationship between the traditional political elite and an emerging national collective. Through close historical analysis, Norberg reconstructs how the Grimms wished to mediate between sovereigns and peoples, politics and culture. Abstract: "This book considers three questions about understanding the past. How can we rethink human histories by including animals and plants? How can we overcome nationally territorialised narratives? And how can we balance academic history-writing and indigenous understandings of history? This is a tentative foray into the connections between these questions. The authors explore them for a large area that historians seldom choose as their unit of inquiry. The "Eastern Himalayan Triangle" (elaborated further in the abstract that follows) includes both uplands and lowlands and is the meeting point of three global biodiversity hotspots, and connects India and China across Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan. They treat the "Triangle" as a multispecies site in which human histories have always been utterly intertwined with plant and animal histories. The main objective is to foreground that history is co-created - it is always interspecies history - but that its contours are locally specific. The book presents a wealth of environmental specificities in which human history is embedded. The multispecies complexities encountered require the authors to recalibrate the conventions of academic history-writing and they do so by advancing new spatial and temporal imaginations - pushing beyond both methodological nationalism and traditional periodisation - and carefully considering local life-worlds and multispecies cosmologies"--

Abstract: "In urban and peri-urban areas across the Global South, politicians, planners and developers are engaged in a voracious scramble to refashion land for global real estate investment, and transfer state power to private sector actors. Much of this development has taken place on the outskirts of the traditional metropoles, in the territorially flexible urban frontier. At the forefront of these processes in India is Gurgaon, a privately developed metropolis on the southwestern hinterlands of New Delhi, which has long been touted as India's flagship neoliberal city. Subaltern Frontiers tells the story of India's remarkable urban transformation by examining the politics of land and labour that have shaped the city of Gurgaon. The book examines how the country's flagship post-liberalisation urban project has been shaped and filtered through agrarian and subaltern histories, logics and subjects. In doing so, the book explores how the production of globalised property and labour in contemporary urban India is filtered through colonial instruments of land governance, living histories of uneven agrarian development, material geographies of labour migration and the worldly aspirations of peasant-agriculturalists"--

This book explores relationships between masculinity and urban life through an interdisciplinary and multi-sited approach. The contexts include elite nationalist imaginations of the city and modernity; the manner in which working class men negotiate the city as a site of desire and aspirations of social mobility; masculinity and religion; sexualised visions of the city in popular-culture texts - such as Hindi language pulp fiction - that circulate as quotidian fantasies of the city as a site of thrill, danger and the 'necessity' of men's control over women; and representations of the political leader as a global masculine type who will lead a previously emasculated nation to future economic and cultural glory"--

Abstract: Constitutional bargains are seen as cornerstones of democratic transitions in much of the world. Yet very few studies have theorized about the link between constitution-making and democratization. Shifting the focus on democratization away from autocratic regime break down, this book considers the importance of inclusive constitution-building for democratization. In this pathbreaking volume, Tofigh Maboudi draws on a decade of research on the Arab Spring to explain when and how constitutional bargains facilitate (or hinder) democratization. Here, he argues that constitutional negotiations have a higher prospect of success in establishing democracy if they resolve societal, ideological, and political ills. Emphasizing the importance of constitution-making processes, Maboudi shows that constitutions can resolve these problems best through participatory and inclusive processes. Above all, The 'Fall' of the Arab Spring demonstrates that civil society is the all-important link that connects constitutional bargaining processes to democratization.

Abstract: "Democracies thrive on mutual participation of one and all here and now. They are marked by a commitment to coordination and cooperation across various fields. Despite their strengths, democracies could more effectively connect with our more-than-human relatives. A universal theory or view is not required to take such action. Non-violence, pluralism, and agonistic engagement with the natural world could further expand democracies' futures. Throughout this book, you will read that interdependence and mutual engagement with those who are different is a key to joint action. This contrasts with politics built on force, coercion and non-cooperation, where power is concentrated in competing "us and them" camps. This book explains how democracies thrive when they move beyond assessments of "what is good for me" and inquire into what is good for "all of us together." In this light, human concerns should not monopolize political judgement; democracies should also revolve around what is good for the entire biosphere. We must learn politics from our ancestors. Plants, insects, birds, and animals have much to teach us. We are their descendants and they are our elders. We would not exist without them. They came first and they continue to sustain us. Our evolutionary lineage and biophysical dependence points to this fact"--

Abstract: Instantons, or pseudoparticles, are solutions to the equations of motion in classical field theories on a Euclidean spacetime. Instantons are found everywhere in quantum theories as they have many applications in quantum tunnelling. Diverse physical phenomena may be described through quantum tunnelling, for example: the Josephson effect, the decay of meta-stable nuclear states, band formation in tight binding models of crystalline solids, the structure of the gauge theory vacuum, confinement in 2+1 dimensions, and the decay of superheated or supercooled phases. Drawing inspiration from Sidney Coleman's Erice lectures, this volume provides an accessible, detailed introduction to instanton methods, with many applications, making it a valuable resource for graduate students in many areas of physics, from condensed matter, particle and nuclear physics, to string theory.

Abstract: "Magnetic phenomena have been known since antiquity when a natural ore called lodestone was discovered to attract bits of iron. The scientific study of magnetism dates from around 1600 when William Gilbert summarized experiments on the subject in his treatise De Magnete [1]. However interest in the subject greatly increased after 1820, when Hans Christian Oersted reported that electrical currents could deflect magnetic needles, thereby establishing a connection between the subjects of electricity and magnetism [2]. Almost immediately, Andre Marie Ampere, Jean-Baptiste Biot and Felix Savart performed a series of seminal experiments that determined the forces acting between current loops"--

Abstract: Uniting the usually distinct areas of particle physics and quantum field theory, gravity and general relativity, this expansive and comprehensive textbook of fundamental and theoretical physics describes the quest to consolidate the elementary particles that are the basic building blocks of nature. Designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students and abounding in worked examples and detailed derivations, as well as historical anecdotes and philosophical and methodological perspectives, this textbook provides students with a unified understanding of all matter at the fundamental level. Topics range from gauge principles, particle decay and scattering cross-sections, the Higgs mechanism and mass generation, to spacetime geometries and supersymmetry. By combining historically separate areas of study and presenting them in a logically consistent manner, students will appreciate the underlying similarities and conceptual connections across these fields. This title, first published in 2015, has been reissued as an Open Access publication.

Abstract: Vladimir Gribov was one of the founding fathers of high-energy elementary particle physics. This volume derives from a graduate lecture course he delivered in the 1970s. It provides graduate students and researchers with the opportunity to learn from the teaching of one of the twentieth century's greatest physicists. Its content is still deeply relevant to modern research, for example exploring properties of the relativistic theory of hadron interactions in a domain of peripheral collisions and large distances that quantum chromodynamics has barely approached. In guiding the reader step-by-step from the basics of quantum mechanics and relativistic kinematics to the most challenging problems of high-energy hadron interactions with simplifying models and physical analogies, it demonstrates general methods of addressing difficult problems in theoretical physics.

Keywords: Supersymmetry ; Supersymmetrie ; Standardmodell
Abstract: Supersymmetric models of particle physics predict new superpartner matter states for each particle in the Standard Model. These superpartners will have wide ranging implications, from cosmology to observations at high energy accelerators, such as CERN's LHC. In this 2006 text, the authors develop the basic concepts of supersymmetry and show how it can be incorporated into a theoretical framework for describing unified theories of elementary particles. They develop the technical tools of supersymmetry using four-component spinor notation familiar to high energy experimentalists and phenomenologists. The text takes the reader from an abstract formalism to a straightforward recipe for writing supersymmetric gauge theories of particle physics, and ultimately to the calculations necessary for practical applications at colliders and in cosmology. This is a comprehensive, practical and accessible introduction to supersymmetry for experimental and phenomenological particle physicists and graduate students.

Abstract: This book introduces the lattice approach to quantum field theory. The spectacular successes of this technique include compelling evidence that exchange of gauge gluons can confine the quarks within subnuclear matter. The lattice framework enables novel schemes for quantitative calculation and has caused considerable cross-disciplinary activity between elementary particle and solid state physicists. The treatment begins with the lattice definition of a path integral and ends on Monte Carlo simulation methods. Other topics include invariant group integration, duality, mean field theory and renormalization group techniques. The reader is assumed to have a basic background in relativistic quantum mechanics and some exposure to gauge theories.
