Abstract: Despite all of the attention and accolades that organizations place on teams, they are not always the most efficient way to meet a business challenge. It's expensive and time consuming to launch a team, and it's a full-time job to lead a team toward achieving organizational objectives. This guidebook was written to help managers determine if a team is the right tool for meeting a business goal, and explains potential obstacles and challenges to forming a team that can operate at its full potential.

Abstract: Managers who achieve significant professional goals do not often worry about career derailment. But complacency is not the same as continued success, which can usually be found among four leadership competencies: interpersonal relationships, team leadership, getting results, and adaptability. Leadership success, achieving it and continuing it, depends heavily on developing and using each of these skills.

Abstract: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an open standard Internet protocol used to allocate and manage IP addresses dynamically. Before DHCP came along, administrators had to manually configure each host on a network with an IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. Maintaining the changes and the associated logs took a tremendous amount of time and was prone to error. DHCP uses a client/server model in which the system updates and maintains the network information dynamically. Windows 2000 provides enhanced DHCP client-server support. DHCP for Windows 2000 is custom-designed for system administrators who are responsible for configuring and maintaining networks with Windows 2000 servers. It explains the DHCP protocol and how to install and manage DHCP on both servers and clients--including client platforms other than Windows 2000. Readers get detailed and explicit instructions for using Windows 2000 DHCP to manage their network IP configurations much more efficiently and effectively. They get background information for using DHCP in general, plus complete information about the Windows 2000 use of DHCP. For those interested in what's on the horizon, the author steps up to the plate with an analysis of the future direction of DHCP and Windows support for IPv6.

Abstract: JavaServer Pages (JSP) technology provides an easy way to create dynamic web pages. JSP uses a component-based approach that allows web developers to easily combine static HTML for look-and-feel with Java components for dynamic features. The simplicity of this component-based model, combined with the cross-platform power of Java, allows a web development environment with enormous potential. JavaServer Pages shows how to develop Java-based web applications without having to be a hardcore programmer. The author provides an overview of JSP concepts and discusses how JSP fits into the larger picture of web applications. Web page authors will benefit from the chapters on generating dynamic content, handling session information, accessing databases, authenticating users, and personalizing content. In the programming-oriented chapters, Java programmers learn how to create Java components and custom JSP tags for web authors to use in JSP pages.

Abstract: SQL (Structured Query Language) is a standardized query language for requesting information from a database. Historically, SQL has been the choice for database management systems running on minicomputers and mainframes. Increasingly, however, SQL is being adapted to PC database systems because it supports distributed databases--databases that are spread out over several computer systems, so that several users on a local-area network can access the same database simultaneously. Although there are different dialects of SQL, it is the closest thing to a standard query language that currently exists. SQL in a Nutshell is a practical and useful command reference to the latest release of the Structured Query Language (SQL99), helping readers learn how their favorite database product supports any standard SQL command. This book presents each of the SQL commands and describes its use in both commercial (Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and Oracle 8 i ) and open source (MySQL, PostgreSQL 7.0) implementations. Each command reference includes the command syntax (by vendor, if the syntax differs across implementations), a description, and informative examples that illustrate important concepts and uses. SQL in a Nutshell is more than a convenient reference guide for experienced SQL programmers, analysts, and database administrators. It's also a great learning resource for novice and auxiliary SQL users such as system administrators, users of packaged client/server products, and consultants who need to be familiar with the various SQL dialects across many platforms.

Abstract: On the World Wide Web, speed and efficiency are vital. Users have little patience for slow web pages, while network administrators want to make the most of their available bandwidth. A properly designed web cache reduces network traffic and improves access times to popular web sites--a boon to network administrators and web users alike. Web Caching hands you all the technical information you need to design, deploy, and operate an effective web caching service. It starts with the basics of how web caching works, from the HTTP headers that govern cachability to cache validation and replacement algorithms. Topics covered in this book include: Designing an effective cache solution Configuring web browsers to use a cache Setting up a collection of caches that can talk to each other Configuring an interception cache or proxy Monitoring and fine-tuning the performance of a cache Configuring web servers to cooperate with web caches Benchmarking cache products The book also covers the important political aspects of web caching, including privacy, intellectual property, and security issues. Internet service providers, large corporations, or educational institutions--in short, any network that provides connectivity to a wide variety of users--can reap enormous benefit from running a well-tuned web caching service. Web Caching shows you how to do it right.

Abstract: A modern computer system that's not part of a network is even more of an anomaly today than it was when we published the first edition of this book in 1991. But however widespread networks have become, managing a network and getting it to perform well can still be a problem. Managing NFS and NIS, in a new edition based on Solaris 8, is a guide to two tools that are absolutely essential to distributed computing environments: the Network Filesystem (NFS) and the Network Information System (formerly called the "yellow pages" or YP).The Network Filesystem, developed by Sun Microsystems, is fundamental to most Unix networks. It lets systems ranging from PCs and Unix workstations to large mainframes access each other's files transparently, and is the standard method for sharing files between different computer systems. As popular as NFS is, it's a "black box" for most users and administrators. Updated for NFS Version 3, Managing NFS and NIS offers detailed access to what's inside, including: How to plan, set up, and debug an NFS network Using the NFS automounter Diskless workstations PC/NFS A new transport protocol for NFS (TCP/IP) New security options (IPSec and Kerberos V5) Diagnostic tools and utilities NFS client and server tuning NFS isn't really complete without its companion, NIS, a distributed database service for managing the most important administrative files, such as the passwd file and the hosts file. NIS centralizes administration of commonly replicated files, allowing a single change to the database rather than requiring changes on every system on the network. If you are managing a network of Unix systems, or are thinking of setting up a Unix network, you can't afford to overlook this book.

Abstract: Java 2 Enterprise Edition is a combination of Java-related technologies including Java Server Pages, Servlets, and Enterprise Java Beans. Working together these "pieces" make Java a viable solution for enterprise-scale applications. "SE Using J2EE" starts with a section covering the core J2EE components and how they fit into the overall application architecture. The book then builds off this foundation to explore the practical applications of J2EE including incorporating XML into J2EE, creating wireless Web applications, network programming with J2EE, managing security and encryption, object programming with Serialization and Reflection, and programming Java applets in the enterprise. Later chapters discuss alternative approaches to solving problems in J2EE applications including debugging, decompiling and disassembly. The book finishes with a useful reference section discussing each of the core J2EE APIs.

Abstract: DNS on Windows 2000 is a special Windows-oriented edition of the classic DNS and BIND. The Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the Internet's fundamental building blocks: the distributed host information database that's responsible for translating names into addresses, routing mail to its proper destination, and many other services. As the preface says, if you're using the Internet, you're already using DNS--even if you don't know it. Besides covering general issues like installing, setting up, and maintaining the server, DNS on Windows 2000 tackles those specific to the Windows environment: integration between DNS and Active Directory, conversion from BIND to the Microsoft DNS server, and registry settings. You'll also acquire a grounding in: Security issues System tuning Caching Zone change notification Troubleshooting Planning for growth What DNS does, how it works, and when you need to use it How to find your own place in the Internet's namespace Setting up name servers Integrating Active Directory with DNS Dynamic updates, storing zone information in Active Directory, and incremental zone transfers Using MX records to route mail Configuring hosts to use name servers Subdividing domains (parenting) Securing your name server: preventing unauthorized zone transfers Mapping one name to several servers for load sharing Troubleshooting: using nslookup, diagnosing common problems If you're a Windows administrator, DNS on Windows 2000 is the operations manual you need for working with DNS every day; if you're a Windows user who simply wants to take the mystery out of the Internet, this book is a readable introduction to the Internet's architecture and inner workings. Abstract: The Java Cookbook is a comprehensive collection of problems, solutions, and practical examples for anyone programming in Java. Developers will find hundreds of tried-and-true Java "recipes" covering all of the major APIs as well as some APIs that aren't as well documented in other Java books. The Java Cookbook, like the bestselling Perl Cookbook, covers a lot of ground, and offers Java developers short, focused pieces of code that can be easily incorporated into other programs. The idea is to focus on things that are useful, tricky, or both. The book includes code segments covering many specialized APIs--like media and servlets--and should serve as a great "jumping-off place" for Java developers who want to get started in areas outside of their specialization. The book provides quick solutions to particular problems that can be incorporated into other programs, but that aren't usually programs in and of themselves.

Abstract: Windows administrators can accomplish many of their routine tasks much more quickly by using the command line (similar to the command line of DOS or Unix-based systems) than by going through the graphical user interface that most users associate with Windows. Windows 20000 Commands Pocket Reference documents the Windows command mode. It's designed for system administrators, but will also be valuable to many users. It includes most available Windows 2000 commands, as well as the most useful system administration command-line utilities from the Resource Kit. Weeded out of this book are Windows commands and command options that are obscure, obsolete, broken, unacceptably insecure, or frankly inadvisable, as well a few special-purpose classes of commands. Whenever several utilities perform essentially identical tasks, we include only the best of them.Commands are grouped according to their purpose and function; within a group, commands are arranged alphabetically. Options for each command are grouped by function and ordered by importance. The Windows 2000 Commands Pocket Reference complements Windows 2000 Administration in a Nutshell by conveying the kind of no-nonsense, boiled-down information typical of O'Reilly's highly successful companion Pocket Reference series. It's a valuable, concise reference to Windows 2000 commands and command-line utilities.

Abstract: If you ask Perl programmers today what book they relied on most when they were learning Perl, you'll find that an overwhelming majority will name Learning Perl --also known affectionately as "the Llama." The first edition of Learning Perl appeared in 1993 and has been a bestseller ever since. Written by two of the most prominent and active members of the Perl community, this book is the quintessential tutorial for the Perl programming language.Perl began as a tool for Unix system administrators, used for countless small tasks throughout the workday. It has since blossomed into a full-featured programming language on practically every computing platform, and is used for web programming, database manipulation, XML processing, and (of course) system administration--all this while still remaining the perfect tool for the small daily tasks it was designed for. Perl is quick, fun, and eminently useful. Many people start using Perl because they need it, but they continue to use Perl because they love it.The third edition of Learning Perl has not only been updated for Perl 5.6, but has also been rewritten from the ground up to reflect the needs of programmers learning Perl today. Informed by their years of success at teaching Perl as consultants, the authors have re-engineered the book to better match the pace and scope appropriate for readers trying to get started with Perl, while retaining the detailed discussion, thorough examples, and eclectic wit for which the book is famous. This edition of the Llama includes an expanded and more gently-paced introduction to regular expressions, new exercises and solutions designed so readers can practice what they've learned while it's still fresh in their minds, and an overall reworking to bring Learning Perl into the new millennium.Perl is a language for getting your job done. Other books may teach you to program in Perl, but this book will turn you into a Perl programmer.

Abstract: C# is designed from the ground up for development on Microsoft's new .NET framework. As such, it's a high-performance language that's simple, safe, object-oriented, and Internet-centric. Programming C# teaches this new language in a way that experienced programmers will appreciate--by grounding its applications firmly in the context of Microsoft's .NET platform and the development of desktop and Internet applications. The first part of this book introduces C# fundamentals, then goes on to explain: Classes and objects Inheritance and polymorphism Operator overloading Structs and interfaces Arrays, indexers, and collections String objects and regular expressions Exceptions and bug handling Delegates and events Part two of Programming C# focuses on development of desktop and Internet applications, including Windows Forms, ADO.NET and ASP.NET. ASP.NET includes Web Forms, for rapid development of web applications, and Web Services for creating objects without user interfaces, to provide services over the Internet. Part three gets to the heart of the .NET Framework, focusing on attributes and reflection, remoting, threads and synchronization, and streams. Part three also illustrates how to interoperate with COM objects. In much the way that you can see the features and personality of the parents and grandparents in young children, you can easily see the influence of Java, C++, Visual Basic, and other languages in C#. The level of information in Programming C# allows you to become productive quickly with C# and to rely on it as a powerful addition to your family of mastered programming languages.

Abstract: The term "peer-to-peer" has come to be applied to networks that expect end users to contribute their own files, computing time, or other resources to some shared project. Even more interesting than the systems' technical underpinnings are their socially disruptive potential: in various ways they return content, choice, and control to ordinary users. While this book is mostly about the technical promise of peer-to-peer, we also talk about its exciting social promise. Communities have been forming on the Internet for a long time, but they have been limited by the flat interactive qualities of email and Network newsgroups. People can exchange recommendations and ideas over these media, but have great difficulty commenting on each other's postings, structuring information, performing searches, or creating summaries. If tools provided ways to organize information intelligently, and if each person could serve up his or her own data and retrieve others' data, the possibilities for collaboration would take off. Peer-to-peer technologies along with metadata could enhance almost any group of people who share an interest--technical, cultural, political, medical, you name it.This book presents the goals that drive the developers of the best-known peer-to-peer systems, the problems they've faced, and the technical solutions they've found. Abstract: With its highly developed capacity to detect patterns in data, Perlhas become one of the most popular languages for biological dataanalysis. But if you're a biologist with little or no programmingexperience, starting out in Perl can be a challenge. Manybiologists have a difficult time learning how to apply the languageto bioinformatics. The most popular Perl programming books areoften too theoretical and too focused on computer science for anon-programming biologist who needs to solve very specificproblems. Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics is designed toget you quickly over the Perl language barrier by approachingprogramming as an important new laboratory skill, revealing Perlprograms and techniques that are immediately useful in the lab. Each chapter focuses on solving a particular bioinformatics problemor class of problems, starting with the simplest and increasing incomplexity as the book progresses. Each chapter includesprogramming exercises and teaches bioinformatics by showing andmodifying programs that deal with various kinds of practicalbiological problems. By the end of the book you'll have a solidunderstanding of Perl basics, a collection of programs for suchtasks as parsing BLAST and GenBank, and the skills to take on moreadvanced bioinformatics programming. Some of the later chaptersfocus in greater detail on specific bioinformatics topics. Thisbook is suitable for use as a classroom textbook, for self-study,and as a reference. The book covers: Programming basics and working with DNA sequencesand strings Debugging your code Simulating gene mutations using random numbergenerators Regular expressions and finding motifs in data Arrays, hashes, and relational databases Regular expressions and restriction maps Using Perl to parse PDB records, annotations inGenBank, and BLAST output

Abstract: This book is a thorough introduction to Java Message Service (JMS), the standard Java application program interface (API) from Sun Microsystems that supports the formal communication known as "messaging" between computers in a network. JMS provides a common interface to standard messaging protocols and to special messaging services in support of Java programs. The messages exchange crucial data between computers, rather than between users--information such as event notification and service requests. Messaging is often used to coordinate programs in dissimilar systems or written in different programming languages. Using the JMS interface, a programmer can invoke the messaging services of IBM's MQSeries, Progress Software's SonicMQ, and other popular messaging product vendors. In addition, JMS supports messages that contain serialized Java objects and messages that contain Extensible Markup Language (XML) pages. Messaging is a powerful new paradigm that makes it easier to uncouple different parts of an enterprise application. Messaging clients work by sending messages to a message server, which is responsible for delivering the messages to their destination. Message delivery is asynchronous, meaning that the client can continue working without waiting for the message to be delivered. The contents of the message can be anything from a simple text string to a serialized Java object or an XML document. Java Message Service shows how to build applications using the point-to-point and publish-and-subscribe models; how to use features like transactions and durable subscriptions to make an application reliable; and how to use messaging within Enterprise JavaBeans. It also introduces a new EJB type, the MessageDrivenBean, that is part of EJB 2.0, and discusses integration of messaging into J2EE.

Abstract: XSLT documents a core technology for processing XML. Originally created for page layout, XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Transformations) is now much more: a general-purpose translation tool, a system for reorganizing document content, and a way to generate multiple results-- such as HTML, WAP, and SVG--from the same content. What sets XSLT apart from other books on this critical tool is the depth of detail and breadth of knowledge that Doug Tidwell, a developer with years of XSLT experience, brings to his concise treatment of the many talents of XSLT. He covers XSLT and XPath, a critical companion standard, and addresses topics ranging from basic transformations to complex sorting and linking. He explores extension functions on a variety of different XSLT processors and shows ways to combine multiple documents using XSLT. Code examples add a real-world dimension to each technique. Useful as XSLT is, its peculiar characteristics make it difficult to get started in, and the ability to use advanced techniques depends on a clear and exact understanding of how XSLT templates work and interact. For instance, the understanding of "variables" in XSLT is deeply different from the understanding of "variables" in procedural languages. The author explains XSLT by building from the basics to its more complex and powerful possibilities, so that whether you're just starting out in XSLT or looking for advanced techniques, you'll find the level of information you need.

Abstract: Since the first edition of this classic reference was published, World Wide Web use has exploded and e-commerce has become a daily part of business and personal life. As Web use has grown, so have the threats to our security and privacy--from credit card fraud to routine invasions of privacy by marketers to web site defacements to attacks that shut down popular web sites. Web Security, Privacy & Commerce goes behind the headlines, examines the major security risks facing us today, and explains how we can minimize them. It describes risks for Windows and Unix, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, and a wide range of current programs and products. In vast detail, the book covers: Web technology--The technological underpinnings of the modern Internet and the cryptographic foundations of e-commerce are discussed, along with SSL (the Secure Sockets Layer), the significance of the PKI (Public Key Infrastructure), and digital identification, including passwords, digital signatures, and biometrics. Web privacy and security for users--Learn the real risks to user privacy, including cookies, log files, identity theft, spam, web logs, and web bugs, and the most common risk, users' own willingness to provide e-commerce sites with personal information. Hostile mobile code in plug-ins, ActiveX controls, Java applets, and JavaScript, Flash, and Shockwave programs are also covered. Web server security--Administrators and service providers discover how to secure their systems and web services. Topics include CGI, PHP, SSL certificates, law enforcement issues, and more. Web content security--Zero in on web publishing issues for content providers, including intellectual property, copyright and trademark issues, P3P and privacy policies, digital payments, client-side digital signatures, code signing, pornography filtering and PICS, and other controls on web content. Nearly double the size of the first edition, this completely updated volume is destined to be the definitive reference on Web security risks and the techniques and technologies you can use to protect your privacy, your organization, your system, and your network.

Abstract: Oracle & Open Source is the first book to tie together the commercial world of Oracle and the free-wheeling world of open source software. As this book reveals, these two worlds are not as far apart as they may seem. Today, there are many excellent and freely available software tools that Oracle developers and database administrators can use, at no cost, to improve their own coding productivity and their system's performance. Moreover, many of the finest Oracle developers are now making their source code freely available so their peers can build upon this code base. Oracle Corporation is even porting its RDBMS to Linux and starting to incorporate a growing number of open source tools in the company's own software. Oracle & Open Source describes close to 100 open source tools you can use for Oracle development and database administration, from large and widely known open source systems (like Linux, Perl, Apache, TCL/Tk and Python) to more Oracle-specific tools (like Orasoft, Orac, OracleTool, and OraSnap). You'll learn how to obtain the software and how to adapt it to best advantage. The book abounds with code examples, download and installation instructions, and helpful usage hints. Abstract: Why is Linux so efficient? Is it the right operating system for a particular application? What can be learned from looking at the kernel source code? These are the kinds of questions that Understanding the Linux Kernel takes in stride in this guided tour of the code that forms the core of all Linux operating systems. Linux is presented too often as a casual hacker experiment. It has increasingly become not only a mission-critical part of many organizations, but a sophisticated display of programming skill. It incorporates many advanced operating system concepts and has proven itself extremely robust and efficient for a wide range of uses. Understanding the Linux Kernel helps readers understand how Linux performs best and how it meets the challenge of different environments. The authors introduce each topic by explaining its importance, and show how kernel operations relate to the utilities that are familiar to Unix programmers and users. Major topics include: Memory management, including file buffering, process swapping, and Direct Memory Access (DMA) The Virtual File System and the Second Extended File System Process creation and scheduling Signals, interrupts, and the essential interfaces to device drivers Timing Synchronization in the kernel Inter-Process Communication (IPC) Program execution

Abstract: "XP is the most important movement in our field today. I predict that it will be as essential to the present generation as the S.E.I. and its Capability Maturity Model were to the last." --From the foreword by Tom DeMarco The hallmarks of Extreme Programming--constant integration and automated testing, frequent small releases that incorporate continual customer feedback, and a teamwork approach--make it an exceptionally flexible and effective approach to software development. Once considered radical, Extreme Programming (XP) is rapidly becoming recognized as an approach particularly well-suited to small teams facing vague or rapidly changing requirements--that is, the majority of projects in today's fast-paced software development world. Within this context of flexibility and rapid-fire changes, planning is critical; without it, software projects can quickly fall apart. Written by acknowledged XP authorities Kent Beck and Martin Fowler, Planning Extreme Programming presents the approaches, methods, and advice you need to plan and track a successful Extreme Programming project. The key XP philosophy: Planning is not a one-time event, but a constant process of reevaluation and course-correction throughout the lifecycle of the project. You will learn how planning is essential to controlling workload, reducing programmer stress, increasing productivity, and keeping projects on track. Planning Extreme Programming also focuses on the importance of estimating the cost and time for each user story (requirement), determining its priority, and planning software releases accordingly. Specific topics include: Planning and the four key variables: cost, quality, time, and scope Deciding how many features to incorporate into a release Estimating scope, time, and effort for user stories Prioritizing user stories Balancing the business value and technical risk of user stories Rebuilding the release plan based on customer and programmer input Choosing the iteration length Tracking an iteration What to do when you're not going to make the date Dealing with bugs Making changes to the team Outsourcing Working with business contracts In addition, this book alerts you to the red flags that signal serious problems: customers who won't make decisions, growing defect reports, failing daily builds, and more. An entire chapter is devoted to war stories from the trenches that illustrate the real-world problems many programmers encounter and the solutions they've devised. ...

Abstract: Software that performs required tasks and meets expectations Accurate estimation of time to completion and cost of development The opportunity to decide which features to include and which to defer Frequent small releases that incorporate continual customer feedback Constant integration and automated testing that insures clean code and robust performance These are some of the many benefits of Extreme Programming (XP), a software development approach especially geared for smaller teams facing vague or rapidly changing requirements. Despite the "extreme" in its name, XP actually reduces risks--the risk of putting out software that is faulty, out of date at its release, over budget, or not fully capable of performing the tasks for which it was intended. Initially considered radical, XP has proven itself successful and is entering the mainstream of software development. The greatest challenge now facing software development managers and engineers is how to implement this beneficial approach. Extreme Programming Installed explains the core principles of Extreme Programming and details each step in the XP development cycle. This book conveys the essence of the XP approach--techniques for implementation, obstacles likely to be encountered, and experience-based advice for successful execution. You will learn the best approaches to Working with an on-site customer Defining requirements with user "stories" Estimating the time and cost of each story Delivering small, frequent releases Performing constant integration and frequent iterations Running design sessions to help programmers move forward with confidence xUnit automated testing Handling defects in the fast-paced, team-oriented XP environment How to refine estimates and steer the development effort through frequent changes The authors present the personal reflections of those who have been through the eXtreme Programming experience. Readers will benefit from first hand accounts of hard-won wisdom on topics such as the art of estimation, managing development infrastructure, solving problems without finger-pointing, the importance of simplicity, and how to introduce modern development tools into an environment where none existed. 0201708426B04062001

Abstract: The aim of the UML profile for framework architectures is the definition of a UML subset, enriched with a few UML-compliant extensions, which allows the annotation of such artefacts. Thus, the resulting profile that we call UML-F does not correspond to a specific domain, but to framework technology. Though profiles might be standardized in the future, sound proposals from various communities will get the process of defining and standardizing UML profiles started. In that sense, this book sets the stage for the UML profile for framework architectures.

A high-level directive given to the network at a single console, it promises easy management of critical network elements such as security, Quality of Service, and device configuration. The translation of high level policies into the device specific configurations is a complex procedure, requiring detailed knowledge of the topology and routes in the network, and translation-enabling algorithms. This book would take the mystery out of this process, allowing you, the network engineer to build policy support into your network architecture. Only scattered pieces of the solution can currently be found in various IETF and DMTF working groups, or in some research presentations and workshops. In-depth understanding of the algorithms behind policy-based networking is necessary for network engineers/architects who want to create new products/applications that deliver policy features.

Abstract: Given its ability to deliver high-impact experiences even over low-bandwidth connections, Flash has become the de facto standard for hundreds of thousands of multimedia web developers worldwide. Flash 5 now includes a new full-fledged programming language called "ActionScript" for controlling animation and multimedia. It's a quantum leap from the bare-bones "Actions" supported in Flash 4, and ActionScript: The Definitive Guide is the first book dedicated entirely to documenting and demonstrating this new language. ActionScript includes all fundamental programming constructs (variables, loops, conditionals, functions, etc.), and is inextricably fused with Flash's authoring behaviors and animation timelines. Because ActionScript is based heavily on the ECMAScript Language Specification (ECMA-262) and is syntactically nearly identical to JavaScript, Macromedia expects thousands of existing JavaScript programmers to migrate to ActionScript. This book is divided into three sections. "ActionScript Fundamentals" introduces both programmers and non-programmers to the new language by first describing fundamental programming concepts and then delineating in detail the components, syntax, and usage of ActionScript. "Applied ActionScript Code Depot" shows you how to use common applications, such as processing online forms. "Language Reference" is a concise and detailed reference that makes all ActionScript globals, properties, and objects, including extensive implementation samples, easy to find quickly. Step-by-step tutorials of the most common ActionScript behaviors Object-oriented programming in Flash Intelligent interface development Server communication Dynamic content generation Password protection String handling Message boards Basic physics Games Code samples are also available from the "Code Depot" on the author's web site devoted to Flash developers. Topics covered in this book include: ActionScript: The Definitive Guide is structured so both programmers and non-programmers can learn how to use ActionScript. This book will take you well beyond simple Flash animations so you can create your own enhanced Flash-driven sites.

Abstract: Absolute Beginner's Guide to Programming, Second Edition will help the reader understand what programming really is. The reader not only gets an overview of the job of programming, but also learns which specific skills are needed for certain jobs. The reader will understand How a computer interprets a program's instructions and gain insight into what goes on "under the hood" when a computer runs a program. How programming can and does relate to the Internet and learn about the skills required for adding security to programs. Compiled versus other kinds of programs such as interpreted languages like JavaScript and HTML, which are more formatting and hyperlink languages. Job potential in the programming market. Absolute Beginner's Guide to Programming, Second Edition offers "hands-on" programming for the "absolute beginner." There are several texts for specific languages, and two offerings (IDG and Sams) that attempt to take an overview-to-programming attitude, but this is the only one that takes today's programming environments and explains why each is important and for whom they are important.

Abstract: Advanced Linux Programming is divided into two parts. The first covers generic UNIX system services, but with a particular eye towards Linux specific information. This portion of the book will be of use even to advanced programmers who have worked with other Linux systems since it will cover Linux specific details and differences. For programmers without UNIX experience, it will be even more valuable. The second section covers material that is entirely Linux specific. These are truly advanced topics, and are the techniques that the gurus use to build great applications. While this book will focus mostly on the Application Programming Interface (API) provided by the Linux kernel and the C library, a preliminary introduction to the development tools available will allow all who purchase the book to make immediate use of Linux.

Abstract: Traditional IPv4 routing is summarized as "All routing is a destination driven process". When a router looks at an IPv4 packet it cares only about the destination address in the header of the packet. It uses this destination address to make a decision on where to forward the packet. But what if you want to route packets differently depending not only on the destination addresses but also on other packet fields such as source address, IP protocol, transport protocol ports or even packet payload? This is Policy Routing and this book tells you how to do it.

Abstract: Enterprise JavaBeans was recently voted "Best Java Book" by the editors and readers of Java Developer's Journal. Readers of JavaPro named it the "Best Java Book for Experts." And Amazon.com included it in the Top Computer Books for 2000. Now the best only gets better! In the new 3rd edition, Enterprise JavaBeans has been completely revised and updated with a thorough introduction to the new 2.0 version of the EJB specification. Significantly different from the earlier version, the 2.0 specification introduces three dramatic improvements: A completely new version of container-managed persistence; local interfaces; and a totally new kind of bean called the "message driven bean." The new version of container-managed persistence (CMP) beans in 2.0 is more portable and robust than in the older 1.1 version. Most significant is the introduction of the relationship fields, which allow entity beans to declare relationships with each other as natural references. In order to make this huge leap in component relationships possible, EJB 2.0 had to redesign how entity beans are defined and interact. Our new 3rd edition examines this critical CMP model in detail. Local interfaces are thoroughly discussed as well. Local interfaces allow beans that are co-located to interact without the overhead of remote method calls. This improves the performance of beans considerably and complements the CMP relationship fields. Message driven beans are a new kind of enterprise bean based on asynchronous messaging and the Java Message service (JMS). Instead of responding to Java RMI calls, message driven beans process JMS messages sent by messaging clients. An entire chapter is devoted to message-driven beans and how to use them effectively. In addition, the 3rd edition contains an architecture overview, information on resource management and primary services, design strategies, and XML deployment descriptors.

Abstract: XML, the Extensible Markup Language, is the next-generation markup language for the Web. It provides a more structured (and therefore more powerful) medium than HTML, allowing you to define new document types and stylesheets as needed. Although the generic tags of HTML are sufficient for everyday text, XML gives you a way to add rich, well-defined markup to electronic documents. The XML Pocket Reference is both a handy introduction to XML terminology and syntax, and a quick reference to XML instructions, attributes, entities, and datatypes. Although XML itself is complex, its basic concepts are simple. This small book combines a perfect tutorial for learning the basics of XML with a reference to the XML and XSL specifications. The new edition introduces information on XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) and Xpath.

Abstract: If you haven't worked with T1 before, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise. If you have, you'll already know that T1, the current network standard for business and professional Internet access, is neither efficient, easy to use, nor particularly well-suited to data transmission. T1: A Survival Guide, a practical, applied reference on T1 data transport, is a life raft for navigating the shoals of a 40-year-old technology originally designed for AT&T's voice network. Throughout T1's long life, network administrators have mainly learned it by apprenticeship, stumbling on troubleshooting tidbits and filing them away until they were needed again. This book brings together in one reference the information you need to set up, test, and troubleshoot T1. T1: A Survival Guide covers the following broad topics: What components are needed to build a T1 line, and how those components interact to transmit data effectively How to use standardized link layer protocols to adapt the T1 physical layer to work with data networks How to troubleshoot problems and work with the telephone company, equipment manufacturers, and Internet service providers In spite of its limitations, T1 is a proven, reliable technology that currently meets the need for medium-speed, high reliability Internet access by institutions of many sizes, and it's likely to be around for a while. T1: A Survival Guide will take the guesswork out of using T1 as a data transport.

What kinds of results can you achieve usingthe power of subclassing and hooking? Here are just a few of thepossibilities: Determine when a window is being activated ordeactivated and respond to this change. Display descriptions of menu items as the mousemoves across them. Disallow a user to move or resize a window. Determine where the mouse cursor is and respondaccordingly. Determine when the display resolution has beenchanged. Monitor the system for a low system resourcecondition. Modify or disallow keystrokes sent to a window or acontrol. Create an automated testing application. Determine when an application is idle. Along with this power comes responsibility; Windows is veryunforgiving if subclassing and hooking are used incorrectly. Subclassing & Hooking with Visual Basic demonstrates thevarious techniques for intercepting messages bound for one or morewindows or controls: the intercepted message can be left in itsoriginal state or modified; afterwards, the message can be sent toits original destination or discarded. For both VB 6 and VB.NETdevelopers, Subclassing & Hooking with Visual Basic opens up a wealth of possibilities that ordinarily would becompletely unavailable, or at least not easy to implement.

Abstract: Exim delivers electronic mail, both local and remote. It has all the virtues of a good postman: it's easy to talk to, reliable, efficient, and eager to accommodate even the most complex special requests. It's the default mail transport agent installed on some Linux systems, runs on many versions of Unix, and is suitable for any TCP/IP network with any combination of hosts and end-user mail software.Exim is growing in popularity because it is open source, scalable, and rich in features such as the following: Compatibility with the calling interfaces and options of Sendmail (for which Exim is usually a drop-in replacement) Lookups in LDAP servers, MySQL and PostgreSQL databases, and NIS or NIS+ services Support for many kinds of address parsing, including regular expressions that are compatible with Perl 5 Sophisticated error handling Innumerable tuning parameters for improving performance and handling enormous volumes of mail Best of all, Exim is easy to configure. You never have to deal with ruleset 3 or worry that a misplaced asterisk will cause an inadvertent mail bomb. While a basic configuration is easy to read and can be created quickly, Exim's syntax and behavior do get more subtle as you enter complicated areas like virtual hosting, filtering, and automatic replies. This book is a comprehensive survey that provides quick information for people in a hurry as well as thorough coverage of more advanced material.

Keywords: Python (Computer program language) ; Electronic books ; local
Abstract: Programming Python focuses on advanced uses of the Python programming/scripting language, which has evolved from an emerging language of interest primarily to pioneers, to a widely accepted tool that traditional programmers use for real day-to-day development tasks. With Python, you can do almost anything you can do with C++; but Python is an interpreted language designed for rapid application development and deployment. Among other things, Python supports object-oriented programming; a remarkably simple, readable, and maintainable syntax; integration with C components; and a vast collection of pre-coded interfaces and utilities. As Python has grown to embrace developers on a number of different platforms (Unix, Linux, Windows, Mac), companies have taken notice and are adopting Python for their products. It has shown up animating the latest Star Wars movie, serving up maps and directories on the Internet, guiding users through Linux installations, testing chips and boards, managing Internet discussion forums, scripting online games, and even scripting wireless products. Programming Python is the most comprehensive resource for advanced Python programmers available today. Reviewed and endorsed by Python creator Guido van Rossum, who also provides the foreword, this book zeroes in on real-world Python applications. It's been updated for Python 2.0 and covers Internet scripting, systems programming, Tkinter GUIs, C integration domains, and new Python tools and applications. Among them: IDLE, JYthon, Active Scripting and COM extensions, Zope, PSP server pages, restricted execution mode, the HTMLgen and SWIG code generators, thread support, CGI and Internet protocol modules. Such applications are the heart and soul of this second edition. Veteran O'Reilly author Mark Lutz has included a platform-neutral CD-ROM with book examples and various Python-related packages, including the full Python 2.0 source code distribution.

Abstract: Effective awk Programming, 3rd Edition, focuses entirely on awk, exploring it in the greatest depth of the three awk titles we carry. It's an excellent companion piece tothe more broadly focused second edition. This book providescomplete coverage of the gawk 3.1 language as well as themost up-to-date coverage of the POSIX standard for awk available anywhere. Author Arnold Robbins clearly distinguishesstandard awk features from GNU awk (gawk) -specific features, shines light into many of the"dark corners" of the language (areas to watch out for whenprogramming), and devotes two full chapters to example programs. Abrand new chapter is devoted to TCP/IP networking with gawk. Heincludes a summary of how the awk language evolved. The bookalso covers: Internationalization of gawk Interfacing to i18n at the awk level Two-way pipes TCP/IP networking via the two-way pipe interface The new PROCINFO array, which provides information aboutrunning gawk Profiling and pretty-printing awk programs In addition to covering the awk language, this book servesas the official "User's Guide" for the GNU implementation of awk ( gawk ), describing in an integrated fashion theextensions available to the System V Release 4 version of awk that are also available in gawk . Keywords: XML (Document markup language) ; Electronic books ; local
Abstract: The arrival of support for XML--the Extensible Markup Language--in browsers and authoring tools has followed a long period of intense hype. Major databases, authoring tools (including Microsoft's Office 2000), and browsers are committed to XML support. Many content creators and programmers for the Web and other media are left wondering, "What can XML and its associated standards really do for me?" Getting the most from XML requires being able to tag and transform XML documents so they can be processed by web browsers, databases, mobile phones, printers, XML processors, voice response systems, and LDAP directories, just to name a few targets. In Learning XML, the author explains XML and its capabilities succinctly and professionally, with references to real-life projects and other cogent examples. Learning XML shows the purpose of XML markup itself, the CSS and XSL styling languages, and the XLink and XPointer specifications for creating rich link structures. The basic advantages of XML over HTML are that XML lets a web designer define tags that are meaningful for the particular documents or database output to be used, and that it enforces an unambiguous structure that supports error-checking. XML supports enhanced styling and linking standards (allowing, for instance, simultaneous linking to the same document in multiple languages) and a range of new applications. For writers producing XML documents, this book demystifies files and the process of creating them with the appropriate structure and format. Designers will learn what parts of XML are most helpful to their team and will get started on creating Document Type Definitions. For programmers, the book makes syntax and structures clear It also discusses the stylesheets needed for viewing documents in the next generation of browsers, databases, and other devices.

Abstract: For those who are faced with switching over to the powerful but often confusing Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Quick Fixes offers something completely new: not just solutions, but a fast, easy way to find them. Designed with the power user in mind, this book is laid out for optimal accessibility; it defines problems clearly and follows up with concise, yet detailed, solutions. Windows 2000 Quick Fixes is an essential reference for both the novice and the well-seasoned Microsoft OS user. For instance, newcomers to Windows 2000 who have children using their computers can quickly learn how to protect some areas without walling off the entire system. Old hands at Windows will learn quick and easy new ways to recover data or what to do when the administrator's password's been forgotten. Unlike many of the oversized and poorly organized books on the market, Windows 2000 Quick Fixes doesn't waste time with endless tutorials, fluff, and useless background material. And while the book is designed for easy access, the material is by no means basic. It provides extensive coverage of problems for both the Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server editions, and takes power users from installation issues, through complex networking configuration problems, to important backup and security concerns. Some of the topics covered include: Setting up a dual-boot system Recovering data Resolving hardware configuration conflicts Restoring the Registry from a back up Making a printer available through the Internet Using automatic address assignment without DHCP Configuring Internet Connection Sharing Hosting a web site With its clear, well-organized fixes to common problems, Windows 2000 Quick Fixes is the book to reach for when the pressure is on and there's no time to waste hunting for buried solutions.

Abstract: The wireless revolution has touched off a huge demand for Palm OS network applications. But information on how to connect a Palm is fragmented across dry function listings in the SDK documentation, a couple of book chapters, some sample code, and a few articles on the Palm web site (each of which assumes prior knowledge of network applications). Palm OS Network Programming pulls all the necessary elements together in the first complete guide to developing network applications for the Palm Computing Platform. The author assumes knowledge of Palm programming in C, but no network experience is required. You'll learn Palm network concepts such as transport protocols and client-server applications from the ground up, clearly illustrated with examples using Metrowerks CodeWarrior development environment. The Palm Net Library, essential to any network application development, gets the detailed treatment it deserves, with sample network applications demonstrating how to make the best use of this powerful system library. Palm OS Network Programming is the first complete developer's resource to building creative--and connected--applications for the fastest-growing platform of the 21st century.

Abstract: Over the last few years, Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology has emerged and matured as a standard platform for building enterprise applications. While the platform has matured into a solid offering for developing and deploying enterprise applications, it does offer its challenges. As developers, often we confuse learning the technology with learning to design with the technology. In this book, senior architects from the Sun Java Center, Sun's Java consulting organization share with the reader their cumulative design experience with and expertise on J2EE technology. The primary focus of the book is on patterns, best practices, design strategies, and proven solutions using the key J2EE technologies including JavaServer Pages (JSP), Servlets, Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), and Java Message Service (J.M.S) API. Other ancillary technologies like JDBC and JNDI are also discussed as relevant to their usage in these patterns. The J2EE Patterns catalog with 16 patterns and numerous strategies is presented to document and promote best practices for these technologies. In addition to the patterns and strategies, the book offers the following: Presents various design strategies for the presentation tier and business tier design. Identifies bad practices in presentation, business, and integration tiers, and offers directions to remedy them by using certain patterns, strategies, and refactorings. Refactorings for various tiers and mechanics to move away from a bad implementation to a better solution. Sample code and examples for patterns, strategies, and refactorings. Abstract: Outsourcing of some business functions pre-dates the technological revolution of the latter part of the 20th century. Nevertheless, 99 percent of outsourcing would not be logical or necessary if it were not for the constantly changing and improving technology. Despite the circumstances, most organizations are left with no alternative but to keep trying to improve their systems. They then have two basic alternatives. They can either do it in-house by buying the necessary equipment, software, and external help, or they can externalize the function completely by taking one of the outsourcing routes. Research undertaken into project failure rates at the beginning of 2000 has provided the author with a unique insight into the real level of success obtained from choosing either internal or external solutions to the competitive problem. The Outsourcing Dilemma presents the arguments for and against outsourcing and suggests ways in which the enormous problems of maintaining competitiveness might be approached. The book examines: the changing times that have brought about the need to be competitive in all functions the various internal solutions to the problem of maintaining competitiveness the advantages and disadvantages of the external solution of outsourcing the extent to which outsourcing is being practiced and the functions being outsourced the growing range of alternatives to full outsourcing a range of factors that potential clients should know about outsourcing providers factors to consider when choosing an outsourcing service provider alternative options toward achieving lasting competitiveness The Outsourcing Dilemma includes controversial case studies highlighting the advantages and potential pitfalls of outsourcing, and a revolutionary long-term competitiveness option - "Business Satellites" - that does not require short-term dramatic change, expense, and disruption. Competitive advantage is a choice. Who are you going to entrust it to?
