Kurzfassung: This brief study of the 1945 expulsion of German populations from Eastern-Central and Eastern Europe does not by any means pretend to be a complete and exhaustive analysis of a subject so massive, complex and controversial. Moreover, it is selective: in dealing with the reception of the expellees it focuses on West Germany, which though most extensively involved, is nevertheless only one of the many countries affected by the exodus. Yet the writer feels that even by presenting barely the funda mentals he can still hope to make some contribution to a field which -at least in the English speaking world - is far from being explored, analyzed and evaluated. His concentration on West Germany has been stimulated by two factors. First, this is the part of the former Reich which is most immediately affected by the transfer. Second, as a result of this involvement it is in West Germany that documentation and literature on the question are most extensive. Indeed, to obtain proper information and data from those countries within the Soviet orbit which are in any way linked with the problem is difficult and at times even impossible. For obvious reasons, in these countries interest is centered, and quite understandably, not on the expulsion of the Germans, but rather on the transfer, dispersion, and annihilation of their own peoples under the Nazi conquest, events, which, in turn, many Germans prefer to keep forgotten.

Kurzfassung: Few modem events have aroused more controversy than the Spanish Civil War. This controversy was especially acute in Great Britain, which was tom between its distrust of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy on the one hand and of Communist Russia on the other. The and determined to avoid war at British public, pacifist in sentiment almost any cost, sensed the danger implicit in the Civil War, yet realised its impotence to control events in Spain which indeed it little understood. The British Government, though under heavy attack from the Opposition and from a handful of its own supporters, succeeded in its endeavours to keep the country out of war on this occasion. The neutrality of Spain, even after Mussolini had entered World War II, was of inestimable value to Britain after the debacle in the summer of I940. It may be therefore that British policy during the Civil War paid off later on as well as achieving its purpose at the time. Dr. Kleine's book, lucidly written and carefully documented, ex amines the British attitude toward the Spanish Civil War. The author has the advantage of belonging to a generation which is able to analyse these events with historical detachment. Yet his understanding and easy style have made the period live. Neutrality was not easy for Britain. Its far-reaching interests in trading with Spain and in passage through Iberian waters again and again raised awkward problems.

Kurzfassung: 1. Algebraic Theory of Complex Numbers -- 2. Geometrical Representations -- 3. Roots of Unity -- 4. Elementary Functions of a Complex Variable -- Answers to Exercises.
Kurzfassung: THE purpose of this book is to prescnt a straightforward introduction to complex numbers and their properties. Complex numbers, like other kinds of numbers, are essen tially objects with which to perform calculations a:cording to certain rules, and when this principle is borne in mind, the nature of complex numbers is no more mysterious than that of the more familiar types of numbers. This formal approach has recently been recommended in a Reportt prepared for the Mathematical Association. We believe that it has distinct advantages in teaching and that it is more in line with modern algebraical ideas than the alternative geometrical or kinematical definitions of v -1 that used to be proposed. On the other hand, an elementary textbook is clearly not the place to enter into a full discussion of such questions as logical consistency, which would have to be included in a rigorous axiomatic treatment. However, the steps that had to be omitted (with due warning) can easily be filled in by the methods of abstract algebra, which do not conflict with the 'naive' attitude adopted here. I should like to thank my friend and colleague Dr. J. A. Green for a number of valuable suggestions, especially in connection with the chapter on convergence, which is a sequel to his volume Sequences and Series in this Library.

Kurzfassung: The Dutch Nagara-Kertagama translation on which Professor Kern worked, at intervals, during eleven years, deserves our utmost admir ation and respect. It is the last important piece of work he finished before his death. It has enriched in an extraordinarily high degree our knowledge of the history and antiquities of the Majapahit period. Moreover, its dignified and courtly style established the reputation of Old Javanese letters as a literature of considerable interest. The con tents of the Nagara-Kertiigama, as interpreted by Professor Kern, gave 14th century Majapahit a nimbus, making it appear to the uncritical public as a most powerful and highly cultured Empire, organized on 18th or 19th century West-European lines. The notes of Krom, Poerbatjaraka and others do not contain com plete translations of the texts. These scholars made valuable contribu tions to a better understanding of several passages. They did not make it easy for the general reader to consult their notes, though. Professor Kern's appreciation of the contents of the Nagara-Kertagama remained fundamentally unshaken. Up to the present time Professor Kern's Nagara-Kertagama trans lation has been generally used and highly appreciated by students of Indonesian cultures and by the public interested in Old Javanese his tory, both in Indonesia and elsewhere. In 1953 a modern Malay trans lation by Slametmuljana was published in Djakarta (Negarakretagama, diperbaharui kedalam bahasa Indonesia). But then, since Professor Kern's days research has made progress. It is clear, nowadays, that his translation has the defects of its good qualities.

Kurzfassung: Gabriel Seailles remarked that Lachelier had the happy for tune "of exercising a profound and decisive influence upon all who heard him, yet without acquiring perhaps a single disciple in the narrow sense of the word. He liberated minds. He rid them of 1 ready-made ideas. " This liberating influence was exercised by means of lecture, conversation, and personal relationship as much as through writing. Its nature is suggested by the character of his better known students, among whom are Boutroux, Bra chard, and Lagneau. Lachelier's writings, however, remain sig nificant and are commonly looked upon by French philosophers as constituting a very important element of their heritage. During his lifetime, Lachelier's position was somewhat ana logous to Victor Cousin's; however, his thinking was far more critical and disciplined than Cousin's and its effect has been all 2 the more fertile. Benrubi places him, along with Ravaisson, as one of the two leading pioneers of the spiritual-metaphysical positivistic movement in France, a movement which provides an interesting contrast to the anti-intellectualism associated with Bergson. Along with Bergson, however, he opposed what has been called "scientism" in philosophy, but he opposed this trend in his own way. R. G. Collingwood, who calls Lachelier one of the greatest of modern French philosophers (cf.

Kurzfassung: This volume of the Bibliographical Series is a thoroughly revised English edition, with many additions, of the author's 'Chronique de l'histoire coloniale. Outre-mer neerlandais' published in May 1958 in the French periodical 'Revue d'histoire des colonies' (Tome XLIV, 1957, pp. 311-448). A stricter observance of bibliographical detail has been aimed at, mainly through the efforts of the editorial staff of the Institute. In some instances, however, the form of a continuous narrative, chosen for this bibliography, made it impossible to give full titles. The spelling of geographical names and names of languages is according to the English romanization of Malay. CONTENTS Page Introduction 1 I. Archives 3 II. Kurzfassung: THIS book, like its predecessors in the same series, is in tended primarily to serve the needs of the university student in the physical sciences. However, it begins where a really elementary treatment of the differential calculus (e. g. , Dif ferential Calculus,t in this series) leaves off. The study of physical phenomena inevitably leads to the consideration of functions of more than one variable and their rates of change; the same is also true of the study of statistics, economics, and sociology. The mathematical ideas involved are des cribed in this book, and only the student familiar with the corresponding ideas for functions of a single variable should attempt to understand the extension of the method of the differential calculus to several variables. The reader should also be warned that, with the deeper penetration into the subject which is required in studying functions of more than one variable, the mathematical argu ments involved also take on a more sophisticated aspect. It should be emphasized that the basic ideas do not differ at all from those described in DC, but they are manipulated with greater dexterity in situations in which they are, perhaps, intuitively not so obvious. This remark may not console the reader bogged down in a difficult proof; but it may well happen (as so often in studying mathematics) that the reader will be given insight into the structure of a proof by follow ing the examples provided and attempting the exercises.
