Abstract: With the ever-growing landscape of national, state, and local regulations, industry requirements, and increased security threats, ensuring the protection of an organization's information is a key part of operating a successful business. Encrypting data-at-rest is a key element when addressing these concerns. Most storage products offer encryption at an additional cost. The IBM® Spectrum Accelerate family, which includes IBM XIV® Storage System, IBM FlashSystem® A9000, IBM FlashSystem A9000R system(s), and IBM Spectrum™ Accelerate Software provides data-at-rest encryption at no charge. Clients can take advantage of encryption and still benefit from the lower total cost of ownership (TCO) that the IBM Spectrum Accelerate™ family offers. For IBM FlashSystem A9000 and A9000R, clients now have a choice between an external key manager-based implementation or a local key based encryption implementation. The local key solution offers a simplified deployment of data-at-rest encryption. This IBM Redpaper™ publication explains the architecture and design of the XIV and IBM FlashSystem A9000 and A9000R encryption solutions. Details are provided for configuring and implementing both solutions.

Abstract: The use of N_Port ID Virtualization (NPIV) to provide host-only ports (NPIV target ports) and spare nodes improves the host failover characteristics by separating out host communications from communication tasks on the same port and providing standby hardware, which can be automatically introduced into the cluster to reintroduce redundancy. Because the host ports are not used for internode communications, they can freely move between nodes, and this includes spare nodes that are added to the cluster automatically. This IBM® Redpaper™ publication describes the use of the IBM Spectrum™ Virtualize Hot-Spare Node function to provide a high availability storage infrastructure. This paper focuses on the functional behavior of hot-spare node when subjected to various failure conditions. This paper does not provide the details necessary to implement the reference architectures (although some implementation detail is provided).

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller (SVC), which is powered by IBM Spectrum™ Virtualize V8.2.1. IBM SAN Volume Controller is a virtualization appliance solution that maps virtualized volumes that are visible to hosts and applications to physical volumes on storage devices. Each server within the storage area network (SAN) has its own set of virtual storage addresses that are mapped to physical addresses. If the physical addresses change, the server continues running by using the same virtual addresses that it had before. Therefore, volumes or storage can be added or moved while the server is still running. The IBM virtualization technology improves the management of information at the block level in a network, which enables applications and servers to share storage devices on a network.

Abstract: Ever-increasing storage demands have a negative effect on an organization's IT budget and complicate the overall storage infrastructure and management. Companies are looking at ways to use their storage resources more efficiently. Thin provisioning can help by reducing the amount of unused storage that is typically allocated to applications or users. Now available for the IBM® DS8880 for Fixed Block (FB) and Count Key Data (CKD) volumes, thin provisioning defers the allocation of actual space on the storage system until the time that the data must effectively be written to disk. This IBM Redpaper™ publication provides an overall understanding of how thin provisioning works on the IBM DS8880. It also provides insights into the functional design and its implementation on the DS8880 and includes illustrations for the configuration of thin-provisioned volumes from the DS GUI or the DS CLI. This edition applies to DS8880 Release 8.5 or later.

Abstract: This IBM® Redpaper™ publication provides an overview of containers and their framework. Container technology enables prepackaged and pre-configured software with the elements that are needed to run in any environment. Because they are meant to be portable, containers normally restrict applications from storing data on external storage. To overcome this limitation, IBM has developed a solution to provide persistent storage for containers on IBM storage systems, known as the IBM Storage Enabler for Containers. The Enabler tightly integrates with IBM Spectrum™ Connect (formerly IBM Spectrum Control™ Base Edition). IBM Storage Enabler for Containers v1.0 extends IBM Spectrum Connect to Kubernetes orchestrated container environments. The paper focuses on containers implementation, management, and control by using IBM Spectrum Connect and IBM Storage Enabler for Containers plug-in, with IBM FlashSystem® A9000 or A9000R.

Abstract: IBM® Real-time Compression™ software that is embedded in IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and IBM Storwize® V7000 solution addresses all the requirements of primary storage data reduction, including performance, by using a purpose-built technology called . This IBM Redpaper™ publication addresses the key requirements for primary storage data reduction and gives real world examples of savings that can be made by using compression. SVC and Storwize V7000 is designed to improve storage efficiency by compressing data by as much as 80% through supported real-time compression for block storage. This process enables up to five times as much data to be stored in the same physical disk space. Unlike other approaches to compression, IBM Real-time Compression is used with active primary data, such as production databases and email systems. This configuration dramatically expands the range of candidate data that can benefit from compression. As its name implies, IBM Real-time Compression operates as data is written to disk, avoiding the need to store data that is awaiting compression.

Abstract: Hold on, because we're entering the age of smart transportation at astonishing speed. By 2020, roughly one in every five vehicles (250 million) will be on the road. Within the next 10 years, the very idea of manually operating a car, truck, ship, plane, or train may seem old fashioned, as the overarching trend will be toward greater automation at every level of transportation. Are we ready for it? In this report, Mike Barlow examines the autonomous vehicle ecosystem through interviews with several technology firms, including Cloudera, that are busy working on various aspects of connected transportation. Vehicles in motion-on land, in the air, or on the sea-will generate and transmit huge quantities of data to transportation infrastructure (roads, bridges, traffic signals), and other vehicles. The data from your car, in fact, may soon be more valuable than the car itself. Get a copy of this report and learn how the vehicles of tomorrow (or maybe the day after tomorrow) will impact mobility management, safety, vehicle management, operator well-being, entertainment, and even the way cities are designed.

Abstract: Abstract This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller, which is powered by IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ Version 7.8. IBM SAN Volume Controller is a virtualization appliance solution, which maps virtualized volumes that are visible to hosts and applications to physical volumes on storage devices. Each server within the storage area network (SAN) has its own set of virtual storage addresses that are mapped to physical addresses. If the physical addresses change, the server continues running by using the same virtual addresses that it had before. Therefore, volumes or storage can be added or moved while the server is still running. The IBM virtualization technology improves the management of information at the "block" level in a network, which enables applications and servers to share storage devices on a network.

Abstract: The traditional manufacturing process for moving an idea from initial concept to finished product consists of several stages, each involving a different set of specialists. But not any longer. With this report, you'll learn how today's cloud-based computer-aided design (CAD) systems can unify multiple stages into a relatively seamless end-to-end process that reduces the product development cycle from years to weeks. Author Mike Barlow examines this new manufacturing paradigm through interviews with cloud-based CAD vendors, including Autodesk, Onshape, and PTC. You'll also learn how specialty product manufacturers use new CAD systems for quick prototyping, iteration, and closer communication and collaboration among design, engineering, assembly, and manufacturing teams. The beauty of cloud-based CAD is that team members can review designs and collaborate in real time via Macs, PCs and mobile phones, rather than the expensive workstations and huge files associated with traditional CAD and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems. Get a copy of this report and discover how manufacturers now have the ability to develop innovative products much faster and far more efficiently than ever before.

Abstract: IBM® Copy Services Manager (CSM) is a replication management solution that is based on the IBM Tivoli® Productivity Center for Replication technology. CSM inherits all the Tivoli Productivity Center for Replication capabilities and continues to provide Copy Services solutions for most IBM storage offerings. The IBM DS8880, starting with firmware Release 8.1, Licensed Machine Code (LMC) 8.8.10.xx.xx, includes CSM for the IBM System Storage® DS8000®, which is pre-installed on the Hardware Management Console (HMC). If you ordered the CSM feature code as part of your IBM DS8000 system configuration, you only need to activate CSM. CSM as installed on the HMC, or acquired separately, includes a lightweight build of the IBM WebSphere® Liberty server code, to use to authenticate CSM users through a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). The same integrated LDAP support can be used for remote authentication of DS8000 users. Furthermore, if you simply want to take advantage of the CSM LDAP client for DS8000 LDAP authentication, the CSM license and CSM activation are not required. This IBM Redpaper™ publication describes the requirements for setup and usage of CSM on the DS8000 HMC, for both Copy Services management and LDAP authentication.

Abstract: Soon enough, the Internet of Things will play a dominant role in the economies of countries and regions around the globe. Many players are already involved, but so far no single company, agency, or department can be held accountable if (and when) things go wrong. Simply put, today's IoT is like Dodge City in the Old West before the U.S. Marshals arrived. In this report, Mike Barlow examines what it will take to enact a set of realistic rules-including frameworks, policies, standards, and common procedures-for governing the IoT. You'll look at five broad and challenging areas: cyber security, privacy, software licensing, data use and ownership, and government regulation. There's no shortage of models for an IoT governance framework, and the case for developing a set of common standards is strong. But implementation challenges, fixed mindsets, and stubborn attitudes are standing in the way.

Abstract: Consider this scenario: You walk into a building and a sensor identifies you through your mobile phone. You then receive a welcoming text telling you when lunch will be served, or perhaps a health warning based on allergy information you've stored in your profile. Maybe you'll be flagged as a security threat. How is that possible? This O'Reilly report explores ambient computing-hands-free, 24/7 wireless connectivity to hardware, data, and IT systems. Enabling that scenario requires a lot of work behind the scenes to determine network connectivity, device security, and personal privacy. With an ambient-computing technology stack already in the works, resolving those issues is only a matter of time. Through interviews with front-line tech pioneers-including Ari Gesher (Kairos Aerospace) and Matthew Gast (Aerohive Networks)-author Mike Barlow explores how real-time analytics can enable real-time decision making. How will simple beacons broadcast information to your phone as you pass businesses on your morning walk? How can emotional speech analysis monitor the emotional state of employees, students, or people in crowds? Pick up this report and find out.

Abstract: Data traffic has increased roughly 60 percent annually over the past two decades, according to one estimate. But that's nothing compared to the Internet of Things, a network of billions of "chatty machines" that will soon produce vast amounts of additional data. How prepared is your organization to handle the traffic expected from all your smart machines and sensors? In this O'Reilly report, Mike Barlow interviews several industry experts about the challenges and opportunities that businesses, organizations, and individuals in every sector of the economy will face in the next few years. Barlow explores options that include edge computing (running analytics at or near devices and machines), upgrading last-mile network links, working with software-defined networks (SDNs), and looking at solutions from the emerging smart city movement. If your organization is involved with the nascent IoT or its larger cousin, the Industrial Internet, this is one report you can't afford to ignore.

Abstract: Though data is increasingly seen as a source of power and wealth, very few organizations today realize what they have. Companies collect an astonishing volume and variety of data, but most of them lack the skills and experience needed to identify and gauge the value of these assets. And so they tend to give all of their data equal weight. In this O'Reilly report, Greg Fell and Mike Barlow examine the risks and financial costs organizations face when they treat all data equally. Through interviews with several industry experts, you'll get advice for determining the value of the data you collect, depending on who in your company is using it, how and where it's being used, and when and why they're using it. Pick up a copy of this report to learn the "5Ws and 1H" of data usage, the C-I-A (confidentiality, integrity, and availability) approach for managing data risk, seven core strategies for monetizing data, and a method for mapping the risk/reward tradeoffs of your data.

Abstract: Artificial intelligence has made enormous progress in the last five years, and after a decade of texting and messaging on smartphones, people have become comfortable with conversational interfaces. Put together, those two trends mean we'll soon be chatting with conversational bots: intelligent software designed to make you feel as though you're talking to a real person. Chatbots are able to automate human tasks by translating fluidly between unstructured language and structured data. Imagine a customer service chat via instant message, email, or voice where the bot has answers before you can ask the question. In this report, authors Jon Bruner and Mike Barlow examine the promise of chatbots, as well as the challenges they face. Driven by recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), chatbots have a bright future in customer relations, healthcare, games and entertainment, and worker productivity (picture a bot as your personal assistant). Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently declared that, "bots are the new apps." Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller (SVC), powered by IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ Version 7.6.

Abstract: Many regard FinTech as another example of technological disruption, but FinTech solutions need to integrate with existing systems in the financial industry, not replace them. As this report explains, "integration" between emerging technology and the entrenched financial services infrastructure is an ongoing challenge. There is much progress, but many hurdles remain. Through interviews with financial, technology, and legal experts, author Mike Barlow explores efforts to make financial services platforms more developer-friendly. Many software architects see modular software based on microservices and service-oriented architecture (SOA) as the way forward, but the financial industry's regulatory environment is a significant barrier to overcome. Download this report and learn how FinTech startups are creating novel types of business models in Africa and Asia, where there are far fewer traditional banks, and in Europe and the US, where financial institutions generally avoid the market for small business loans.

Abstract: Only a couple of years ago, artificial intelligence was a cliché, a sad remnant of 1950s-style futurism. Today it's sexy again, and that far-off future of intelligent bots is just around the corner. Consider the latest trend, AI-as-a-Service (AIaaS). Software vendors such as Google, IBM, and Amazon are rolling out sophisticated cloud-based AI and machine-learning services for a growing market of developers and users in business and academia. Through interviews with consumers and executives of AIaaS vendors, author Mike Barlow examines the primary driver of this new approach: AI is simply too big for any single device or system. But with AIaaS, developers can build applications that perform data collection and compression on devices, while advanced processes such as natural language processing and machine learning are performed in the cloud. When will consumers feel the impact? Fairly soon, you may be dealing with customer-service bots that know the answers before you even ask a question. Download this report and explore how: AI is now a distributed phenomenon, with information passed back and forth between local devices and remote systems AIaaS vendors already support a diverse menu of APIs for AI developers. AI apps and interfaces will be designed and engineered increasingly for non-technical users Companies will routinely incorporate AI capabilities into new products and services

Abstract: Although high-level languages such as Java and Python are popular choices among programmers, there's a lot of renewed interest in the venerable C language. In this report, Mike Barlow examines how the widespread use of embedded software, and the emergence of the maker movement and open-source hardware, have led people back to the language that maps more efficiently to machine instructions. Through interviews with a dozen technology leaders, educators, makers, and embedded software developers, you'll learn about many examples that demonstrate C's ubiquity, especially as the lines between software development and hardware design become less distinct. Embedded software developers who work on devices for Internet of Things find C/C++ indispensable, but so do people who tackle custom hardware projects with Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Pick up a copy of this report and learn how C/C++ enables programmers to extract maximum performance from the underlying hardware resources-especially in situations where you need real-time performance.

Abstract: Innovation is inherently disruptive when it comes to new products and services, especially for companies forced to react to developments like Google and the iPhone. In this O'Reilly report, Mike Barlow investigates how startups and large companies alike are looking to keep up with the pace of technological innovation today. Disruptive innovation doesn't always involve a new product or service. Creating new a business model or new market for an existing product can have the same effect. A couple of years ago, a small platform-as-a-service company repurposed an internal project as a virtual shipping container called Docker-a classic "pivot" story. With this report, you'll explore the different challenges and opportunities faced by startups and mature companies during the innovation process. The stakes are high. Many tech giants that dominated the scene 25 years ago, such as Wang Laboratories and the Digital Electronics Corporation, have since been disrupted out of existence by sharper, faster, bigger, or more agile rivals. Mike Barlow is an award-winning journalist, author, and communications strategy consultant. Since launching his own firm, Cumulus Partners, he has represented major organizations in a number of industries.

With current estimates of the amount of data to be managed and made available increasing at 60 percent each year, this outlook is where a storage area network (SAN) enters the arena. SANs are the leading storage infrastructure for the global economy of today. SANs offer simplified storage management, scalability, flexibility, and availability; and improved data access, movement, and backup. Welcome to the cognitive era. The smarter data center with improved economics of IT can be achieved by connecting servers and storage with a high-speed and intelligent network fabric. A smarter data center that hosts IBM Storage solutions can provide an environment that is smarter, faster, greener, open, and easy to manage. This IBM Redbooks publication provides an introduction to the SAN and Ethernet networking, and how these networks help to achieve a smarter data center. This book is intended for people who are not very familiar with IT, or who are just starting out in the IT world.

Abstract: Ambitious plans are underway to create the Industrial Internet, but as this O'Reilly report explains, the attempt to marry the Internet with the world's industrial platforms faces significant challenges that resist easy solutions. This cyber-physical coupling is like trying to engineer a complex new life form, using pre-existing parts that weren't designed to work together. But there is progress. Author Mike Barlow explores how groups such as the Industrial Internet Consortium and the Global City Teams Challenge are working to create a firm structure for the Industrial Internet that includes rules and principles, rather than repeating the serendipitous nature of the Internet. The Industrial Internet isn't just another tech fad. It's the beginning of a new chapter in human history. Will it advance the dream of universal prosperity, or quickly mutate into a chaotic and dangerous "Internet of unsafe things?" Pick up this free report and learn how industrial groups are working to make this dream come true.

Abstract: Data may indeed be the "new oil"-a seemingly inexhaustible source of fuel for spectacular economic growth-but it's also a valuable resource for humanitarian groups looking to improve and protect the lives of less fortunate people. In this O'Reilly report, you'll learn how statisticians and data scientists are volunteering their time to help a variety of nonprofit organizations around the world. Mike Barlow cites several examples of how data and the work of data scientists have made a measurable impact on organizations such as DataKind, a group that connects socially minded data scientists with organizations working to address critical humanitarian issues. There's certainly no lack of demand for data science services among nonprofits today, because these organizations, too, realize the potential of data for changing people's fortunes.

Abstract: The smart city movement is on a roll. Companies such as GE, Cisco, IBM, and Siemens are looking to transform major cities through advanced computer technologies, sensors, high-speed data networks, predictive analytics, big data, and the IoT. But, as Mike Barlow explains in this O'Reilly report, the story goes beyond technology. Citizens, too, will need to play a large role in turning cities into smart, livable environments. According to a United Nations report, by 2050 two-thirds of humanity will live in more than 40 mega-cities of 10 million people each. All of them will need to determine how to deliver more services with fewer resources. Cities will have to improve efficiency and reduce expenditures wherever possible, through new technologies and other means. To create a thriving environment where innovation can blossom, citizens will not only be called upon to generate much of the data, but they'll also need to be at the center of decision-making, based on what that data reveals. Download this report today, and learn about the progress that various groups and organizations have already made in major cities around the world, and what lies ahead for all of us.

Abstract: This IBM® Redbooks® publication is a detailed technical guide to the IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller Version 7.4. The SAN Volume Controller (SVC) is a virtualization appliance solution, which maps virtualized volumes that are visible to hosts and applications to physical volumes on storage devices. This book is intended for readers who want to implement the SVC at a 7.4 release level with minimal effort.

Abstract: Data is the new currency of business, the most critical asset of the modern organization. In fact, enterprises that can gain business insights from their data are twice as likely to outperform their competitors. Nevertheless, 72% of them have not started, or are only planning, big data activities. In addition, organizations often spend too much money and time managing where their data is stored. The average firm purchases 24% more storage every year, but uses less than half of the capacity that it already has. The IBM® Storwize® family, including the IBM SAN Volume Controller Data Platform, is a storage virtualization system that enables a single point of control for storage resources. This functionality helps support improved business application availability and greater resource use. The following list describes the business objectives of this system: To manage storage resources in your information technology (IT) infrastructure To make sure that those resources are used to the advantage of your business To do it quickly, efficiently, and in real time, while avoiding increases in administrative costs Virtualizing storage with Storwize helps make new and existing storage more effective. Storwize includes many functions traditionally deployed separately in disk systems. By including these functions in a virtualization system, Storwize standardizes them across virtualized storage for greater flexibility and potentially lower costs. Storwize functions benefit all virtualized storage. For example, IBM Easy Tier® optimizes use of flash memory. In addition, IBM Real-time Compression™ enhances efficiency even further by enabling the storage of up to five times as much active primary data in the same physical disk space. Finally, high-performance thin provisioning helps automate provisioning. These benefits can help extend the useful life of existing storage assets, reducing costs. Integrating these functions into Storwize also means that they are designed to operate smoothly together, reducing management effort. This IBM Redbooks® publication provides information about the latest features and functions of the Storwize V7000 Gen2 and software version 7.3 implementation, architectural improvements, and Easy Tier.
