    Abstract: This open access textbook introduces and defines digital humanism from a diverse range of disciplines. Following the 2019 Vienna Manifesto, the book calls for a digital humanism that describes, analyzes, and, most importantly, influences the complex interplay of technology and humankind, for a better society and life, fully respecting universal human rights. The book is organized in three parts: Part I “Background” provides the multidisciplinary background needed to understand digital humanism in its philosophical, cultural, technological, historical, social, and economic dimensions. The goal is to present the necessary knowledge upon which an effective interdisciplinary discourse on digital humanism can be founded. Part II “Digital Humanism – a System’s View” focuses on an in-depth presentation and discussion of the main digital humanism concerns arising in current digital systems. The goal of this part is to make readers aware and sensitive to these issues, including e.g. the control and autonomy of AI systems, privacy and security, and the role of governance. Part III “Critical and Societal Issues of Digital Systems” delves into critical societal issues raised by advances of digital technologies. While the public debate in the past has often focused on them separately, especially when they became visible through sensational events the aim here is to shed light on the entire landscape and show their interconnected relationships. This includes issues such as AI and ethics, fairness and bias, privacy and surveillance, platform power and democracy. This textbook is intended for students, teachers, and policy makers interested in digital humanism. It is designed for stand-alone and for complementary courses in computer science, or curricula in science, engineering, humanities and social sciences. Each chapter includes questions for students and an annotated reading list to dive deeper into the associated chapter material. The book aims to provide readers with as wide an exposure as possible to digital advances and their consequences for humanity. It includes constructive ideas and approaches that seek to ensure that our collective digital future is determined through human agency

    Abstract: The history of Europe in the 20th century is closely tied to the history of urban planning. Sie wird anhand von Streichensembles untersucht, die ohne Dirigierende musizieren. Durch die Integration von Videographie, fokussierter und lebensweltanalytischer Ethnographie wird der Blick keineswegs auf situatives Musizieren verengt, sondern die institutionelle und organisationale Ordnung des Forschungsfeldes systematisch integriert. This book explores the experiences of the ethnic and religious minorities of Iran, such as Jews, Yarsani, Christian, Sabean Mandaean, Bahai, Zoroastrian, Baluch, Kurd, and others and provides a historical overview of their position in society before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution and highlights their contribution to the country's history, diversity, and development. It also focuses on the historical, sociopolitical, and economic factors that affected the minorities' development during the last century. Author Behnaz Hosseini has shaped this book with authentic material and has assembled the experiences and opinions of academics of diverse backgrounds who approach the minorities’ issues in Iran in a constructive and ingenious way: from debating their efforts to preserve their identity and cultural heritage and ensure their survival to discussing their relations with the majority and other minorities, the role of religion in everyday life, and their contribution to the rich cultural history of Iran. S.     Abstract: A proposal that we think about digital technologies such as machine learning not in terms of artificial intelligence but as artificial communication. Algorithms that work with deep learning and big data are getting so much better at doing so many things that it makes us uncomfortable. How can a device know what our favorite songs are, or what we should write in an email? Have machines become too smart? In Artificial Communication, Elena Esposito argues that drawing this sort of analogy between algorithms and human intelligence is misleading. If machines contribute to social intelligence, it will not be because they have learned how to think like us but because we have learned how to communicate with them. Esposito proposes that we think of “smart” machines not in terms of artificial intelligence but in terms of artificial communication. To do this, we need a concept of communication that can take into account the possibility that a communication partner may be not a human being but an algorithm—which is not random and is completely controlled, although not by the processes of the human mind. Esposito investigates this by examining the use of algorithms in different areas of social life. She explores the proliferation of lists (and lists of lists) online, explaining that the web works on the basis of lists to produce further lists; the use of visualization; digital profiling and algorithmic individualization, which personalize a mass medium with playlists and recommendations; and the implications of the “right to be forgotten.” Finally, she considers how photographs today seem to be used to escape the present rather than to preserve a memory.

Damit verbinden sich hohe gesellschaftliche Erwartungen, aber auch Sorgen hinsichtlich einer schleichenden Entmündigung des Menschen. Am Beispiel des Forschungssektors lotet dieser Band die Optionen, Entwicklungschancen und Risiken von KI-Techniken für die Zukunft des wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisprozesses und der darauf beruhenden technischen Entwicklungen aus. Computing has become an essential part of today's primary and secondary school curricula. In recent years, K-12 computer education has shifted from computer science itself to the broader perspective of computational thinking (CT), which is less about technology than a way of thinking and solving problems-"a fundamental skill for everyone, not just computer scientists," in the words of Jeanette Wing, author of a foundational article on CT. This volume introduces a variety of approaches to CT in K-12 education, offering a wide range of international perspectives that focus on artificial intelligence (AI) literacy and the integration of computing and physical objects.     Abstract: The phenomenon of South Korean Christianity is, in a word, remarkable. In less than 250 years, 29% of South Korea's population adheres to Christianity, a staggering 71% of Korean Americans identify as Christian, and the powerful zeal of Korean Christians to spread the Gospel's influence in South Korea already overshadows other established religious groups (i.e. Buddhism, Confucianism). This handbook offers a comprehensive overview on how the Bible has been used by faith communities in Korea and the Korean diaspora over two centuries.
    Abstract: "Korean Christianity is renowned for its rapid growth and conservative theological orientation. This phenomenon is inextricably tied to Korean appropriation of the Bible in their religio-cultural and socio-political context since the 18th century. Less understood, however, is the complex tapestry of Korean biblical interpretation that emerged from being missionized, colonized, internally divided, and incorporated into global norms. These countervailing forces proffer a distinctive Korean-ness of biblical interpretation. On the one hand, it tracks closely the influence of conservative western missionaries. On the other hand, it reflects God's liberating intervention for Koreans and the Korean diaspora. Both of these movements respond to and move beyond distinct histories of oppression. This introduction coheres twenty-four papers by grouping them into four waves of reciprocal interpretive encounters shaping Korean appropriation of the Bible and Christian practices. While some conservatively align with received western orthodoxy, others embrace a sense of complementarity that informs the spectrum of Korean Christian thought and practice, the long-standing religious traditions of Korea, the diversity of Korea's global diaspora, and the learning of non-Koreans who are attentive to the impact of the Bible in Korea"--

    Abstract: More-than-human geographies haben sich im angelsächsischen Raum als wichtiges Forschungsfeld etabliert und in den letzten Jahren auch in der deutschsprachigen Geographie zunehmend an Bedeutung gewonnen. Die Dezentrierung des Menschen wird durch verschiedene Ansätze wie die Phänomenologie, den Pragmatismus, die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie, Assemblage-, Affekt- und Mehr-als-repräsentationale Theorien sowie durch praxistheoretische, performative und viszerale Ansätze konzeptionell vorangetrieben. Trotz dieser großen Heterogenität eint die Mehr-als-menschlichen Geographien, dass sie den Menschen als Teil eines größeren Gesamtzusammenhangs begreifen, sich der Welt aus mehr als nur streng rational greifbaren Erfahrungs- und Sinndimensionen nähern und insofern leibliche, affektive, emotionale und sensorische Praktiken, Transaktionen und Intra-Aktionen in den Blick nehmen. Die Autorinnen und Autoren führen in die Entwicklungslinien, Grundzüge und Schlüsselkonzepte der komplexen Debatte ein und tragen so dazu bei, sie systematisch für die deutschsprachige Geographie und interessierte Nachbardisziplinen zu erschließen.

    Abstract: Inspired by the neoliberal paradigm that transposes religious behaviors into a religious marketplace framed by consumerist and capitalist models, this volume draws on ethnographic fieldwork to discuss the assemblage between the well-being trope and the rise of new spiritualities, as well as their deep permeation within mainstream culture. Building on previous literature that addresses the relationship between spirituality, healing and well-being, this text discusses the religious roots of mind-body practices. The contributions offer a critical perspective on the scope, limits and impacts of the current celebration of spiritualities. Part I provides theoretical insights for thinking about ways in which the prevalent ethics of well-being reframes subjectivities within the margins of neoliberal order. Part II demonstrates how spiritual economies are promoted, shaped and regulated by institutional forces such as States, law and the labor market. In part III, contributors describe in detail how spiritual economies unfold in specific cultural and social settings. The text appeals to students and researchers working on the spirituality and sociology of religion.

Frederick Davis is an Associate Professor at the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada.     Abstract: This "Open Access" book investigates the legal reality of the church through a sociological lens and from the perspective of canon law studies, the discipline which researches the law and the legal structure of the Catholic Church. It introduces readers from various backgrounds to the sociology of canon law, which is both a legal and a theological field of study, and is the first step towards introducing a new subdiscipline of the sociology of canon law. As a theoretical approach to mapping out this field, it asks what theology and canon law may learn from sociology; it discusses the understanding of “law” in religious contexts; studies the preconditions of legal validity and effectiveness; and based on these findings it asks in what sense it is possible to speak of canon “law”. By studying a religious order as its struggles to find a balance between continuity and change, this book also contributes to the debates on religious law in modernity and the challenges it faces from secular states and plural societies.     Abstract: In a time of rapid societal changes around the globe, there is a pressing need for genuine elucidation of Muslim moral values and norms, especially in migration contexts. These rapid changes raise questions about the conservation of the 'self' and the adaptation of norms and values to real-life conditions or contexts. Muslims, confronted by the conflicting demands of tradition and modernity, often search for answers in theological normativity, particularly in conceptualisations of ethical norms and values. In this context, the legal verses in the Qurʾān, called normative verses (āyāt al-aḥkām), constitute key points of reference. Because the plurality of Islamic conceptualisations of norms requires a multidisciplinary approach, this collection of articles examines the topic from the perspective of three different disciplines of Islamic theology: Qurʾānic hermeneutics, principles of Islamic jurisprudence and religious education.     Abstract: In einer Zeit rascher gesellschaftlicher und globaler Veränderungen besteht insbesondere in Migrationskontexten der Bedarf nach einer gründlichen Auseinandersetzung mit tradierten muslimischen ethischen bzw. moralischen Werten und Normenvorstellungen. Der rasche und komplexe Wertewandel wirft die Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen Bewahrung des Eigenen und Anpassung bzw. Weiterentwicklung der Normen und Werte an die lebensrealen Bedingungen und Kontexte auf. Im Prozess dieser Auseinandersetzung zwischen Tradition und Moderne rückt die Frage nach theologischer Normensetzung bzw. Wertevorstellungen in den Fokus des Interesses muslimischen Lebensvollzugs. Dabei kommt dem Umgang mit der Normativität des Korans bzw. der sogenannten Normenverse (āyāt al-aḥkām) eine Schlüsselrolle zu.
