Abstract: Two-fifths of the household enterprises that operated in Vietnam in 1993 were still in business in 1998, after five years of rapid economic growth. Constrained by lack of education, credit, and effective demand in poor areas, and squeezed by the lure of wage labor in rich areas, household enterprises are most prominent when agriculture is declining in importance but before the formal sector becomes established

Empirical evidence shows that secured letters of credit are used by borrowers who are informationally opaque and have higher observable risk. Abstract: Global capitalism, vintage 21st century, is less friendly to the international migration of unskilled people than were previous waves of globalization (such as that of the late 19th century). A freer regime for international migration could help to reduce global economic inequality, improve the allocation of world resources and ease labor shortages during periods of rapid growth. But the flight of human capital talent, and entrepreneurs can be detrimental for developing countries

Abstract: In a large sample of East Asian nonfinancial corporations, firms using foreign currency derivatives had distinctive characteristics, such as larger size and foreign debt exposures. Unlike in studies of U.S. firms, there was only weak evidence that liquidity-constrained firms with greater growth opportunities hedged more. Firms appeared to use foreign earnings as a substitute for hedging with derivatives, and to engage in "selective" hedging. There was no evidence that East Asian firms eliminated their foreign exchange exposure by using derivatives. And firms using derivatives before the crisis performed just as poorly as nonhedgers during the crisis
