    Abstract: "With Africa as its point of reference and departure, this volume examines why and how the two concepts - radicalisms and conservatisms - should not be taken as mere binaries around which to organize knowledge. It demonstrates that these concepts have multiple and diverse meanings as perceived and understood from different disciplinary vantage points, hence, the deliberate pluralization of the terms.     Abstract: Biographical note: Sebastian Günther, Ph.D. (1989) is Professor and Chair of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen. Germany. He has published extensively on the intellectual history of Islam, including Representations and Visions of Homeland in Modern Arabic Literature (co-ed., Hildesheim 2016) and Ideas, Images, and Methods of Portrayal: Insights into Classical Arabic Literature and Islam (ed., Leiden 2005). Todd Lawson, Ph.D. (1989) is Professor Emeritus of Islamic Thought at the University of Toronto. He has published widely on Quranic exegesis, mysticism, Shi‘ism, and Quranic literary problems. Recent publications include articles such as Friendship, Illumination and the Water of Life (2016), Joycean Modernism in a 19th century Qur’an commentary (2015), The Qur’an and Epic (2014) and the monograph Gnostic Apocalypse in Islam (London 2012). Christian Mauder is a PhD student at the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies of the University of Göttingen, Germany. On the other, for an array of reasons, the identity assertion of the householder Naths of Bengal and Assam has failed to draw academic curiosity so far. Since the late nineteenth century, a segment of the Naths, largely educated and elite, has been crafting their identity as Brahman grounded on their "origin myth", negotiating with the British colonial administration through different census enumerations, as well as internal social reforms. One of the primary reasons for their current lagging is that the Naths never politicised their identity and demands, and did not mobilise themselves in the democratic political arena"--

The early modern period saw drastic changes in rites of death, burials and commemoration. In Knowing by Ear, Anette Hoffmann demonstrates that listening to these acoustic recordings as historical sources, rather than linguistic samples, opens up possibilities for new historical perspectives and the formation of alternate archival practices and knowledge production. A contrast to the concepts of communicability and biocommunicability that Charles L. E. B. Du Bois. Drawing on examples such as doctor-patient interaction within racialized communities and an extensive study of the COVID-19 pandemic, Briggs addresses the erosion of trust and rejection of expertise that has become prominent in science and medicine.     Abstract: "The Syriac Orthodox community is a religious minority which has been neglected for a long time by the Ottoman and Turkish historiography. This book aspires to provide a method and information for a new understanding of the community in the contemporary context. Based on a fieldwork consisting of interviews, participant observations complemented by historical and contemporary texts, it reveals the emergence of new socio-political dynamics among the Syriacs of Istanbul in their relationship to Turkish contemporary society and diaspora.     Abstract: "Struggles for the Human is an ethical and political inquiry into human rights as a vocabulary of resistance. While contemporary legal scholars have critiqued human rights as an exclusionary concept that enables corporations and NGOs to mark certain subjects as deserving of rights and others as excluded from them, few have tracked the ways that grassroots organizations in the global south have used the notion of human rights to struggle against extractive capitalism. Based on historical research and Lara Montesinos Coleman's seventeen-year work alongside Colombia's internationalist Red de Hermandad (Network of Brother and Sisters), this study explores how grassroots groups have re-made human rights away from abstract universals, towards concrete struggles. Coleman shows how these struggles give rise to an "insurgent humanism," where what it means to be human is defined by the dialectical tension between a persistent critique of power relations and life-annihilating violence. Coleman tracks how neoliberalism's privatization of human rights has caused extraordinary repression and violence, as well how groups on the ground in Colombia have fought this privatization"--

An Yountae maps how revolutionary non-Western thought is shot through with religious ideas, as exemplified by key decolonial figures including Edouard Glissant, Frantz Fanon, and Gloria Anzaldua. By revisiting the corpus of decolonial literature with an eye towards religion, Yountae reveals how decoloniality reconstitutes the sacred as part of its vision of liberation. This incisive reading of decoloniality elucidates how revolutionary thinkers' refusal of colonial religions opens up the possibility for the remaking of religion itself. Across the book's five chapters, Yountae explores decoloniality's conception of the sacred in relationship to revolutionary violence, gender, creolization, and racial phenomenology.     Abstract: "Between 1600 and 1750 Ottoman Turkish music differentiated itself from an older Persianate art music and developed the genres antecedent to modern Turkish art music.     Abstract: "In Primitive Normativity Elizabeth W. Williams traces the genealogy of a distinct narrative about African sexuality that British colonial authorities in Kenya used to justify their control over African populations. She identifies a discourse of "primitive normativity" that suggested that Kenyan Africans were too close to nature to develop the forms of sexual neuroses and practices such as hysteria, homosexuality, and prostitution that were supposedly common among Europeans. Primitive normativity framed Kenyan African sexuality as less sexually polluted than that of the more deviant populations who colonized them. Williams shows that colonial officials and settlers used this narrative to further the goals of white supremacy by arguing that Africans' sexuality was proof that Africans must be protected from the forces of urbanization, Western-style education, and political participation, lest they be exposed to forms of civilized sexual deviance. Challenging the more familiar notion that Europeans universally viewed Africans as hypersexualized, Williams demonstrates how narratives of African sexual normativity, rather than deviance, reinforced ideas about the evolutionary backwardness of African peoples and their inability to govern themselves"--

    Abstract: "Bringing into dialogue the fields of social history, Andean ethnography, and postcolonial theory, The Lettered Indian maps the moral dilemmas and political stakes involved in the protracted struggle over Indian literacy and schooling in the Bolivian Andes. Brooke Larson traces Bolivia's major state efforts to educate its unruly Indigenous masses at key junctures in the twentieth century. While much scholarship has focused on "the Indian boarding school" and other Western schemes of racial assimilation, Larson interweaves state-centered and imperial episodes of Indigenous education reform with vivid ethnographies of Aymara peasant protagonists and their extraordinary pro-school initiatives. Exploring the field of vernacular literacy practices and peasant political activism, she examines the transformation of the rural "alphabet school" from an instrument of the civilizing state into a tool of Aymara cultural power, collective representation, and rebel activism. From the metaphorical threshold of the rural school, Larson rethinks the politics of race and indigeneity, nation and empire, in postcolonial Bolivia and beyond"--
