    Abstract: How do arts convey the existence of potent knowledge without revealing details of that knowledge? In Seeing the Unseen, art historian Susan Elizabeth Gagliardi examines tensions between the seen and unseen that makers, patrons, and audiences of arts in western West Africa negotiate through objects, assemblages, and performances. Gagliardi examines how ambiguity anchors design of the arts, and she shows that attempts to determine exact meanings miss the point. Specialists across western West Africa construct assemblages, installations, and buildings that hint at the possibility of revelation, but full disclosure remains unattainable. Specific activities and contexts integral to the design and use of the works often leave no visible trace. Through attention to many ways of seeing and knowing, Seeing the Unseen opens new possibilities for the study of so-called historical or classical arts of Africa grounded in the specificity of individual works, their making, and their reception.     Abstract: Ernst Lubitsch (1982–1947) was one of the most successful and influential German filmmakers in American film comedy. In this volume, Rick McCormick argues for a more transnational view of Lubitsch's career and films with respect to nationality, ethnicity, migration, class, sexuality, and gender. McCormick focuses on Lubitsch's Jewishness, which is inseparable from the distinct transnational character of the director, categorizing his early films as "Jewish comedies" where Lubitsch strikes a tenuous balance between Jewish humor, antisemitic jokes, stereotypes, and the incorporation of antifascist subjects into his popular films.     Abstract: Ranging over the broad spectrum of contemporary literary and film theory, Breaking the Frame explores the different approaches to cinematic art that are offered by cognitive psychology, feminist theory, aesthetics, and psychoanalysis. In this study Inez Hedges looks closely at films that challenge accepted norms in both form and content. The films discussed here, including Zazie, La Nuit de Varennes, and E.T., break out of conventional frames, upsetting our expectations about how films should look (the film frame) as well as how experience is usually organized by cine- matic works of art (the psychological or cognitive frame). Hedges focuses on two primary areas: the way that the structure of film texts guides the interpretations of the spectator (hermeneutics) and the way that films reflect social models (representation). Within the hermeneutic approach, the author relates the unconventional use of film language in cinematic works of the 1960s and 1970s not only to the recent novels of Beckett and Queneau and to the French nouveau roman but also to one of the founding texts of Western literature, the Oedipus Rex of Sophocles. The discussion of representation exam- ines the social ascendancy of cinematic narrative in modern times in the light of the philosophical insights of Michel Foucault and Harold Bloom. Semiotics-the study of signs-has increasingly become an area of intellectual inquiry, and the word itself is now even known to the general public, thanks to the popularity ofnovels by David Lodge and the fame of Umberto Eco. No one has done more to advance the study of signs than Thomas A. Sebeok. In countless books and articles, he has written in a fascinating and erudite manner about almost every conceivable type of sign activity.     Abstract: In a single volume, Alexandra Orlova has assembled the most complete and up-to-date collection of memoirs by contemporaries of the Russian composer Modest Petrovich Musorgsky (1839-1881). These thirty-six reminiscences were written by well- known figures of the Russian musical scene at the time (including the composers Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Balakirev; the critics Vladimir Stasov and Mikhail Ivanov; and several performing musicians) as well as by little-known people who were privileged to have met the composer. A well-defined image of Musorgsky emerges from the various accounts: a small, delicate-looking man, immaculately dressed, always a welcome guest at fashionable homes; and, unfortunately, an alcoholic. Skillful as an accompanist and improviser at the piano, Musorgsky was exceedingly generous with his time and talent as a performer at concerts for the benefit of students. We see him among his musical colleagues, the so-called Balakirev circle, trying out their latest compositions for one another at social gatherings. Some of the most poignant memoirs recount emotion-filled visits with Musorgsky in the hospital during his last illness. Most of the memoirists are truthful, objective, and loving. Their accounts, coupled with Orlova' s copious notes, provide a valuable insight into Musorgsky's life and personality

    Abstract: Charles E. Scott's challenging book advances the broad claim that ethics as a way of judging and thinking has come into question as philosophers have confronted suffering and conflicts that arise from our traditional systems of value. The question of ethics arises from nineteenth-century European thought and finds its most effective early expression in Nietzsche's writings. The book shows how the self-overcoming movement of Nietzsche's thought recoils on his own values and, in the context of the ascetic ideal, prevents the formation of a normative ethics. After tracing a movement in Foucault's work on the formation of ethical subjectivity similar to that found in Nietzsche's thought, Scott turns to Heidegger, in whose work the question of ethics plays a prominent role but lapses in Heidegger's Rector's Address of 1933. Why did this lapse take place and what were its consequences? Scott shows that Nietzsche's ascetic ideal continued to play a role in Heidegger's thought, mitigating the constructive possibilities of the question of ethics, a question that Heidegger at times brings to bear with exceptional force

The Potential of Modern Discourse seeks to recover for contemporary discourse an alternative possibility by returning to the modernist project of linking ethics, politics, and the discourse of knowledge. In the multiple, ironic discourses of Robert Musil, the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce, and the physics of Werner Heisenberg, Marike Finlay finds the basis for a new discourse of knowledge. In her pragmatic, consensualmodel, meaning and truth are not objectively or unilaterally established, but rather "triadically" co-constructed as realtionship among "object," "representamen" (or "sign"), and "interpretant" (the terms are Peirce's), and this triadic realtionship is constantly shifting through time and space. By approaching Musil's The Man without Qualities as discourse, Finlay finds in it a re-presentation of the theory of knowledge implicit in the Peircean triadicity and Heisenber's philosophy of physics.     Abstract: The Ballad Matrix examines the William Motherwell ballad collection, one of the largest collections of songs gathered during the golden age of ballad collecting in Scotland (1780 to 1830). The collected repertoire of Agnes Lyle of Kilbarchan, Motherwell's most prolific informant, consists of twenty-two full texts, some with tunes, and a number of additional fragments. Revealing how Agnes Lyle relied on the narrative techniques of ballad singing, these songs also show how she achieved expression of personal values and concerns even though her medium, the ballad, was a highly traditional one. When in her ballads Agnes Lyle expressed traditional attitudes toward luxury, sexuality, or death, her expression was uniquely vehement. Furthermore, she was able to express radical social and political attitudes, which are not traditional in balladry. Study of Agnes Lyle's ballads thus allows a better understanding of what it meant for a traditional singer to "learn" a ballad and to what extent she was free to make the song her own

    Abstract: Reinhardt Grossmann holds that a realistic ontology in regard to perceptual, physical, and mathematical objects can be combined with an empiricistic theory of knowledge. In an introductory essay, Nicholas Temperley gives a detailed assessment of the current state of research in this field and examines the reasons for the relative obscurity of most Victorian music, which he traces to the Victorians' own belief that great music must come from across the Channel. The intrinsic value of Victorian music is the main message of Peter Horton's essay on Samuel Sebastian Wesley and Linda K.     Abstract: In Writing Joyce, Lorraine Weir proposes a paradigm shift in Joyce studies away from the preoccupation with referential mimesis and toward a theory of processual mimesis and a materialist semiotics. Rather than emphasize plot, character, and psychology, Weir approaches A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, and Finnegans Wake as a system, a memory theater whose mnemonic repertoires readers comprehend according to directives coded in the text. "In Writing Joyce," says Weir, "we encounter the system as a teaching machine, whose purpose is to teach us itself." To write the system is both to invent and to perform it," she writes, " 'invent' in the medieval rhetorical sense of invention, to come upon or discover what is already given and, working with the text, to 'draw out' or foreground its modes of operation.     Abstract: After its eclipse by the piano, the harpsichord survived primarily as a museum curiosity until the end of the nineteenth century. But early in the new century the player and builder Arnold Dolmetsch found a ready market for his harpsichords, clavichords, and virginals and an eager audience for his chamber concerts featuring these new/old instruments. In 1923 the incomparable Wanda Landowska made her American debut. This tiny woman, almost a cult figure, was to exert a powerful influence on the course of harpsichord playing for the next half century. Among her students were Putnam Aldrich, the harpsichord duo of Philip Manuel and Gavin Williamson, Alice Ehlers, and, for a short time, Ralph Kirkpatrick. Landowska's instrument was the heavy, durable Pleyel. As the harpsichord and authentic instrument revival progressed, American builders started to produce lighter instruments, and in recent years do-it-yourself builders have been buying harpsichord kits. Sylvia Marlowe is famous for playing jazz on the harpsichord, and in a reversal of past practice, harpsichordists are now borrowing the music of the piano and making it their own. The harpsichord has come a long way from the days when reviewers patronizingly described it as "quaint," "tinkling," or sounding like "a regiment of mice." It can be powerful and tender, dramatic and delicate, and in the minds of many, the only medium for the performance of early music

    Abstract: Drawing upon theories of folkloristic performance, deconstructive criticism, and reader-response theory, Sandra Dolby Stahl has developed a unique methodology for the examination of oral personal narratives, stories that people tell based on their own experiences. Such stories are not traditional in the usual sense but are instead a creative response to experience and the tradition of narration. Hearing such stories is also a creative response, one that requires the perception of traditions or "allusions" in the story and its performance. It is to these interpretive allusions that our attention is drawn throughout the book. Stahl begins her analysis with a discussion of the genre of personal narrative and the seemingly universal practice of turning events and experiences into narratives. She also discusses the state of interpretive research in folkloristics. Folk-narrative research has generally been analytical, attending to questions of form, structure, style, or function; few interpretive studies of folk narrative have been published. Because the personal narrative has only recently become a part of folklore research, Stahl's interpretive attention to the genre is unprecedented. Her study includes two lengthy chapters in which two transcribed narrative texts are meticulously analyzed and subjectively interpreted-as allusion upon allusion creates meaning for the listener (and reader)

    Abstract: The Unbroken Chain is the first anthology in any language to present the diversified achievement of Taiwan fiction from the period of Japanese occupation to the present. In Part II, thirteen stories trace the evolution of themes and styles in Taiwan fiction since 1945, from the "transit-passenger" mentality of the late forties and early fifties, through a period of modernist literary experimentation in the 1960s, to a search for social and cultural roots in the so-called hsiang-t'u morality tales of the 1970s. Illustrative of the last are two especially powerful stories, Huang Ch'un-ming's "I Love Mary" and Ch'en Ying-chen's "Night Freight," about the corrosion of Chinese identity by materialistic American culture. Each selection is prefaced by a short biographical sketch that identifies the special qualities of the author and places the story within its sociohistorical context.     Abstract: Rosemary Zumwalt examines the split between the literary folklorists and the anthropological folklorists during the period from 1888, when the American Folklore Society was founded, to the early 1940s, when control of the Journal of American Folklore by the anthropologists was ended. At the center of the conflict were concerns of professionalism, science, and academic discipline. For the literary folklorists, the orientation was toward literary works and the unwritten tradition from which they derived. Folklorists a·lso focused on the study of literary types or genres. Child and Kittredge studied the ballad; Thompson, the folktale; Taylor, the riddle and the proverb. In anthropology, study was directed toward cultures without writing, and the emphasis was on fieldwork. The literary folklorists looked at literary forms for folklore while the anthropological folklorists looked at the life of the people and saw folklore only as part of it. Although this discipline-bound focus of the two factions created friction and led the two groups in different directions, it helped shape the development of the discipline in the United States

Micael Cabot Haley investigates the creative working of metaphor from the perspective of the semeiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce.     Abstract: E. Power Biggs was one of the most influential figures in the American musical world during the middle decades of the twentieth century. As a popular radio performer in the 1940s and 1950s, a renowned recitalist, and a prolific recording artist, he stood for the best in organ music and the best in instruments.     Abstract: This collection of 51 works by 37 composers is the first compendium of its kind. The compositions, spanning eleven centuries of Western art music, are vital and important and illustrate advanced compositional trends of their age. The earliest works reproduced are two Byzantine chants by Kassia (fl. 840); the most recent is the first movement of Ellen Zwilich's Symphony No. 1, which received the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1983. Some of the outstanding early composers included are Hildegard von Bingen (fl. 1150), Maddalena Casulana (fl. 1560), Francesca Caccini (fl. 1620), and Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre (fl. 1700). From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries come compositions by Marianne von Martinez, Maria Szymanowska, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann, and Amy Beach.     Abstract: Since Aristotle, traditional strategies for knowledge have been linear. By contrast, circular epistemology, a basic but rarely discussed concept in Hegel's thought, is a theory of knowledge that does not depend on certainty with respect to first principles. Tom Rockmore examines and evaluates Hegel's novel approach to knowledge against the background of the philosophic tradition, attending to the relation between the systematic and historical aspects of Hegel's thought. After reconstructing the complex historical context in which Hegel's theory took form, Rockmore studies in detail its initial formulation in the Differenzschrift. Circular epistemology is next examined in Hegel's mature thought in both systematic and historic perspectives. In his original and richly detailed study of Marx's philosophy, Henry emphasizes the importance of approaching Marx's writings directly, rather than through the intermediary of subsequent interpretations, which often have been politically motivated. In contrast to the usual depiction of Marxian thought as an economically oriented analysis of social reality, Henry contends that in Marx's theory philosophy is primary. Therefore, Marx's writings must properly be viewed-and judged-within the context of the modern philosophical tradition .     Abstract: A central figure during the peak of Tang dynasty literary activity, the poet Wang Wei (701-761) combined a subtle, deceptively simple imagery with a profound philosophical interpretation of the world based on integration and harmony. Although his poetry has been translated in the West, Wang Wei has not received a great deal of critical attention because of the elusive quality of his work. Pauline Yu has translated and annotated 150 of his poems, the most representative selection of Wang Wei in English to date. She corrects previous translators' prejudices for the nature poetry of Wang Wei by including generous samplings of the poet's juvenilia, court poetry, and Buddhist verse. An extensive introductory chapter discusses Taoist and "metaphysical" traditions in Chinese literature as well as Western Symbolist, post-Symbolist, and phenomenological theories as they pertain to the poetry of Wang Wei. Pauline Yu's exegeses opening each chapter of poetry suggest some interpretive guidelines. The individual poems, however, are allowed to speak for themselves and are accompanied only by notes and commentary explaining historical and literary allusions. Punctuated Chinese texts for all translations and a character glossary of key terms and names appear in appendixes-both of these features are unique among translations of Wang Wei's work

    Abstract: All aspects of human life are perceived and organized through myths and systems of myth. Language is a similarly vital function of our existence. Myth and Language explores the less universally accepted supposition that, particularly for the realm of literature, these two domains are necessarily interrelated. Moreover, this relationship is shown to be crucial to an understanding of the broader roles of literature in society. Unlike previous studies of this symbiosis, which have tended to neglect the importance of language, Myth and Language fully considers the influence of social context on the nature of literary language. Albert Cook begins his investigation into the relationship of myth and language with a critique of the work of Levi-Strauss, showing the usefulness of his binary procedures and sketching a typology of cultural phases, with particular attention to literary forms.
