Abstract: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix

Abstract: Title in English: Space and its habitation: A view of space in the works of Marie Noël, Suzanne Renaud, Christiane Singer and Sylvie Germain The publication summarizes the research results of various types of space in the literary works of four Christian inspired French authors, M. Noël, S. Renaud, C. Singer and S. Germain. Their literary texts cover the whole of the 20th century and show diversity in approaches to space, but also a difference in the literature of 1st and 2nd halves of 20th century. Methodologically, it proceeds from the phenomenological view of G. Bachelard on the intimate space of the home, through the open and sacred space according to M. Eliade's study, towards the geocritical analysis of the space, based on the almost unused B. Westphal's theory of geocriticism. The study of space shows that literature can not be separated from the outside world, on the contrary, it contributes to its better understanding

Abstract: This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. What is the relationship between theory and practice in the creative arts today? In Critical Practice, Martin McQuillan offers a critical interrogation of the idea of practice-led research. He goes beyond the recent vocabulary of research management to consider the more interesting question of the emergence of a cultural space in which philosophy, theory, history and practice are becoming indistinguishable. McQuillan considers the work of a number of writers and thinkers who cross the divide between theoretical and creative practice, including Alain Badiou and Terry Eagleton, and the longer tradition of 'theory-writing' that runs through the work of Hélène Cixous, Roland Barthes and Louis Althusser. His aim is to elucidate the contemporary ramifications of a relationship that has been contested throughout the long history of philosophy, from Plato's dialogues to Derrida's 'Envois'

Abstract: "Still Blundering into Sense". Maria Edgeworth, her context, her legacy. This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields

Abstract: This volume, born from the fifteen-year-long experience of teaching in classes of monolingual students from North American Universities, and born from many years of training in the fields of philosophy, linguistics and analysis, aims at meeting the students' essential linguistic needs, while also considering the improvement of the motivational framework as its main educational goal. To this aim, the text's structure is based on communication, and features a wide range of interactive activities in order for the students to be directly in contact with the real context and to be able to use the target language in an authentic way. The manual includes both a Textbook and a Workbook, as well as a section in English with grammar cards and a general glossary. In addition to the activities for the classroom, each unit includes a part dedicated to home exercises and a partial glossary, which the students have to fill in. The text does not offer separated cultural inserts, which are rarely integrated into the didactic programming; on the contrary, it features very short and simple cultural notes

Abstract: Baudelaire et Wagner. "The intellectual name of love is interest", wrote Thomas Mann in his Considerations of an apolitical man (1915-1918). The interest, he specifies, "implies an emotional state that is nothing less than lukewarm", which "far exceeds in violence that of admiration'". It is not then in the panegyric, but in "malicious, even hateful" criticism, and in particular in the pamphlet (on condition "that it is spiritual and a product of passion") that this interest is found to be satisfied. The loving challenge that Thomas Mann issued at Wagner during the war is an answer, if possible, to Baudelaire's intention

Abstract: Granito e arcobaleno. Forme e modi della scrittura auto/biografica collects essays on issues regarding relationships and their fragile balances, between reality and fiction, experience and memory, private and public, autonomy and relatedness, referential truth and subjective truth, between the self and the other. The contributions also involve concepts such as the social, cultural, geopolitical or even rhetorical space, where the auto/biographical subject is situated; the 'materiality' of the body, which perceives and internalizes the images, sensations and experiences of the external world; the agency and the linguistic, discursive, social and cultural constraints to which it is subjected. After a theoretical introduction, this volume explores individual case studies that can be traced back to different and sometimes distant cultural realities, then concludes with an artist's reflection on art and life

Abstract: In Paris, the Little Pantheon is the theatre on rue de Chartres which, together with other showrooms, competed with the great Pantheon on rue Soufflot between the 18th and 19th century. The Little Pantheon introduced the idea of a Big Man embracing the excluded personalities from the official Pantheon, and those categories, such as the actors, which had been hitherto marginalised. This volume takes into consideration a new theatrical genre bringing on stage the public and private lives of Great Men of Letters, Philosophy and the Arts, be them real or imaginary. This book is not only original for its analysis of the revolutionary mentality that shapes a new concept of Fame, but also functions as a tool to account for the extent of the phenomenon from a chronological and thematic perspective thanks to the Catalogues

Abstract: Dante's verse "If I spake false, thou falsifiedst the coin" (Inferno, Canto XXX, verse 115) is a typical example of what would later be defined as "para-hypotaxis". On the basis of a reconsideration of the categories of 'coordination' and 'subordination', the author proposes an analysis of this syntactic module in ancient Italian, addressing aspects such as its debated origin and the possibility of establishing typological comparisons with structures which are documented in other languages (outside the Romance and Indo-European spheres as well). The research focuses in particular on the identification of the discursive and textual functions of the para-hypotaxis, which were investigated in five texts from the time span between the end of the 13th century and the middle of the 16th century

Abstract: This book was born from an observation and a desire. The starting point is that the multilingual nature of Andrea Zanzotto's poetry becomes almost invisible by virtue of being evident in the eyes of its readers. The babelic hypersensitivity of the petèl's poet is certainly not absent in critical studies, yet this work addresses it in a systematic way for the first time, by investigating on the multiple connections between poetic writing and languages. The desire that accompanied this reflection was to lead it with a "prismatic" gaze, crossing the poetry's multilingualism and the poet's translation practice, and summoning the many voices of its translators around the Zanzottian multivocality. A series of unpublished documents in the appendix, and the interventions of poets like Cecchinel, Demarcq and Rueff, alongside those of the best European experts of Zanzotto, add a special significance to this work. Speech given on June 26, 2007 at the Locanda da Lino in Solighetto (TV, Italy) on the occasion of the presentation of the book by F. Carbognin, L'«altro spazio». Scienza, paesaggio, corpo nella poesia di Andrea Zanzotto (Nuova Editrice Magenta, 2007) and of issue no. 230 of «l'immaginazione» (year XXII, May 2007). Videotaped and included in the DVD Tribute to Andrea Zanzotto (Viviafilm production), which also includes speeches by Niva Lorenzini, Marco Antonio Bazzocchi and Silvana Tamiozzo Goldmann

Abstract: The two volumes are dedicated to Alessandra Contini Bonacossi by the Association "Archivio per la memoria e la scrittura delle donne", which bears her name since 2007. They include a biographical profile, enriched by the list of her numerous publications, followed by thirty-two essays written by scholars who shared with her ideals and cultural interests of research and study and writings of her family members who make up the "family album". The collection, in addition to the variety of issues addressed in a wide chronological span - with essays ranging from the Middle Ages to the contemporary age - mainly focuses on the historiographical and interpretative reflection on documentary, iconographic, literary sources and themes such as Medici diplomacy, the Lorraine age, and gender history, to which Alessandra made important contributions with her studies

Abstract: Mare, fiume, ruscello. Acqua e musica nella cultura romantica (Sea, river, stream. Water and music in romantic culture) re-reads German literature between the 18th and 19th centuries, focusing on the figure of water, following the theoretical-methodological lines traced by Gaston Bachelard in his studies on material imagination, especially in his 1942 work L'eau et les rêves. The work investigates the elective affinities between liquid substance, poetic word and music in the romantic period. The rereading highlights the large number of "liquid-aquatic" metaphors in Franz Schubert's lieder works, with particular attention to the cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (1823) and Winterreise (1828). The study is conducted in an interdisciplinary perspective that extends, between literary and musical analysis, to the reading and listening of the Lieder

Abstract: The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the "imitatio" and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo's canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its 'marginality' as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca

Abstract: Inquietudine spettrale. Gli uccelli nella concezione poetica di Jacob Grimm covers a peculiar aspect of Jacob Grimm's poetry: in the framework of a nature pervaded with spirituality, whose hard-to-reach secrets inspire fascination, birds, as inhabitants of the air, are perceived as ghostly creatures, capable of infusing the observer with a sense of restlessness. The individual references to the theme found in essays, letters and works all confirm a strong interest in these animals, and constitute analysis material in the context of Grimm's vast production. Particular recognition is given to the famous collection entitled Kinder- und Hausmärchen (in its first and mostly unknown version), the capital book of the Romantic current in Germany, where the liminal role of birds can be attributed to archaic myths and popular beliefs

Abstract: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition "de", which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy

Abstract: The Stabat mater, like few other objects of thematics, analyzes the same posture translated into different languages, it tracks the evolution and persistence of a gesture that gives voice to the unacceptability of loss and the immobile duration of pain. From the mères en deuil of the classical antiquity to the fainting of Mary beneath the crucifixions that have marked the history of art - from Jacopone da Todi, from Giotto degli Scrovegni until today, stone and marble reliefs, wooden panels, frescoes, stained glass windows, engravings, tempera, oils, manuscripts, writing, alongside the melodies of Palestrina, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Boccherini, Rossini - countless works have re-proposed the figure of the grieving mother. In this book we have tried to record the constancy and the alterations of the topos, highlighting the differences that exist between verbal, musical and visual expressions in relation to the changing times, the reversal of the role. If narrative, especially the Italian one, is present with Manzoni, Fogazzaro, D'Annunzio, Gadda, Vittorini, Pavese, Dessí, La Morante, Calvino...; poetry with Gatto, Jaccottet, Szymborska, Merini, Yves Bichet... how intriguing, in this complex volume conceived and edited by Anna Dolfi, is the attempt to move on almost border lands, making the cinema (Pasolini) and architecture speak, making music interact with literature and opera librettos, intertwining soundtracks with celebrated movies, giving figurative models to photography (through the shots by Letizia Battaglia). Poetic texts by De Signoribus and Vegliante, brought back to the theme on this occasion, keep together a research that questions itself on models and typologies, also showing the existence of a further recent role reversal, an unprecedented one, which wants the son's pietas to pose next to the mother

Abstract: Le norme stabilite e infrante. Saggi italo-tedeschi in prospettiva linguistica, letteraria e interculturale collects linguistic and literary essays which analyse the writing styles of authors like Vasari and Goethe, forms of modern communication, and theoretical and normative aspects of language. Other essays focus on the work of Italian authors from the 20th century (Pirandello and Atzeni), investigating the dimension of intertextuality and polyphony of languages. The relationship between concrete poetry and visual poetry is also analysed, and so is the expressive technique of language in the cinema. This volume ends with an analysis of the cultural policies of both countries, highlighting their similarities and differences

Abstract: The volume Un incontro lusofono plurale di lingue, letterature, storie, culture (A plural Lusophone encounter of languages, literatures, stories, cultures) aims at highlighting one of the specificities of the Lusophone culture: the linguistic-literary pluralism that continues to distinguish Portuguese culture, from Brazil, to Africa and Asia, since the time of maritime discoveries. The collected essays mark, in this regard, a twofold path: they are intercultural, since they alternate the literary and linguistic aspects from the humanistic to the contemporary era, but they also are intergeneris as they alternate not only historiography and treatises with poetry and narrative - with inter-artistic incursions across literature, painting and photography - but also linguistic aspects, namely grammatical, and examples of rewritings and translational questions, in a sort of further Lusophone dialogue between genres and topoi

Abstract: "A humanity that forgets Buchenwald, Auschwitz, Mauthausen, I cannot accept it. I write for us to remember": this was Giorgio Bassani's answer to anyone who asked him about the origin of his writing. Guided by these words, Anna Dolfi has woven a fabric of suggestions that have pushed Italian and foreign scholars and even some protagonists to reflect on narrators, poets, essayists, historians, philosophers, publishers, artists, who have been induced by the history of a difficult affiliation to a sort of fatal, testimonial moral duty. The result was a book of great novelty for style and reading proposals which, starting from the ancient Jewish tradition, from legends relived in a political and libertarian key, after the Romanticism and the German 19th Century, brings to the fore the modern voices of European and North American literature/culture, and of the Yiddish and Eastern tradition. The names of the great Jewish intellectuals of Central Europe are recurring: Canetti, Schulz, Döblin, Antelme, Wiesel, Sebald, Oz, Grossman, Nelly Sachs, Irène Némirovsky..., among the Italians those of Loria, Natalia Ginzburg, Giacomo Debenedetti, Cesare Segre..., but especially Giorgio Bassani and Primo Levi who, in order to keep the memory of the tragedy of persecution and the Shoah, have chosen to place their entire work "entre la vie et la mort". Eventually, all this leads to remembering how the duty to testify is linked to the affection and work of mourning, to the lasting effect of an immediate wound that nourishes the connection between the truth of what happened and what one might call the "truth of creation", le vrai du roman

Abstract: The lucky discovery in Athens of the letters of Luzi, Traverso and Macrí to Margherita Dalmati allowed to complete the epistolary of the Greek poet and harpsichordist preserved in the archives of Florence and Urbino. The 341 pieces available thanks to Sara Moran's research allow us to trace her contacts with the great protagonists of post-war literary Florence, also showing their links with the Roman and Milanese environment. Throughout the "thaw" years, the letters offer the reconstruction of Dalmati' militancy in Cyprus' struggle for independence, of her friendship with Cristina Campo, of the translations into neo-Greek of Luzi's poetry. The 60s and 70s are marked by her promotion of Italian poetry in Greece, and of Greek poetry in Italy, through collaboration with magazines and the translation for Einaudi, together with Nelo Risi, of Kavafi's poems. The letters - tender, funny, ironic and affectionate - of the four voices involved in the book illuminate important moments of the culture of the second half of the 20th Century as well as of the protagonists' life, while among and around all of them an enchanting woman with her musical voice can be admired, whose name was little known until now

Abstract: The volume reconstructs the role of the "art objects" in the renewal of identity (social, political and cultural) of the Mannelli family, among the oldest families of the Florentine patriciate. During the 17th Century the main exponents adopted a lifestyle inspired by the Medici court, gradually dismantling, but at different times, the dress of the merchant. The analysis of the main town and countryside residences and of the displaying of the objects of art, conducted on a documentary basis and with the "display of art" critical tools, returns the fundamental stages of the renewal process and, together with numerous autonomous episodes of unpublished patronage and collecting, the emergence of common narrative strategies of historical and political identity through art objects

Abstract: If the play, our device, had no other function than to project, "at some elevation", certain lacks of which we would hardly be aware, there can only be in the Letters, according to Mallarmé, a single essential act: to question the relationships that this device maintains with some internal state of ourselves. We believe, with the author of La Musique et les Lettres, that it is through the play of their often rival relationships that the arts can be understood and make us understand. This game, which never stops urging us, constantly asks us for new instruments for its implementation - or its staging

Abstract: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need" seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani's memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's "writing beyond the heart"

Abstract: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other - stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity - to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed - in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality - in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? The volume, conceived and edited by Nicola Turi, while tracing the individual path of known and lesser-known authors, in relation to the main theme of the book, both Italian and not (from Leopardi to Zanzotto, from Gadda to Calvino, from Salsa to Dessí, from Luzi and Fenoglio to Leavitt, Eisner and Celestini), also stimulates and elaborates a profound reflection on the bewilderment and natural attraction of the artistic gesture (from time to time in the name of fierce irony, desperate incredulity, the elegiac testimony) for evil, pain, the martial distortion of the human, social and political context

Abstract: The book brings to light a little-known story: the arrival in Italy of thousands of Moriscos exiles, descendants of Arab-Muslim origin, settled for centuries in the Iberian peninsula, baptized following the Christian Reconquista (1492), often accused of crypto-Islamism and betrayal of the homeland, eventually expelled and deported from Spain (1609-1614). What are the obstacles encountered by refugees along the journey of their exodus? What is the behavior of the authorities with respect to the landings? And in what terms have the refugees interacted with the local populations? These are current questions to ancient problems that Italy, in its political fragmentation, has already experienced

Abstract: Alberta writing has a long tradition. Beginning with the pictographs of Writing-on-Stone, followed by Euro-Canadian exploration texts, the post-treaty writing of the agrarian colonization period, and into the present era, Alberta writing has come to be seen as a distinct literature. In this volume Melnyk and Coates continue the project of scholarly analysis of Alberta literature that they began with Wild Words: Essays on Alberta Literature (2009). They argue that the essays in their new book confirm that Alberta's literary identity is historically contingent with a diverse, changing content, that makes its definition a work-in-progress. The essays in this volume provide contemporary perspectives on major figures in poetry and fiction, such as Robert Kroetsch, Sheila Watson, Alice Major, and Fred Stenson. Other essays bring to light relatively unknown figures such as the Serbian Canadian writer David Albahari and the pioneer clergyman Nestor Dmytrow. Writing Alberta: Building on a Literary Identity offers a detailed discussion of contemporary Indigenous writers, an overview of Alberta historiography of the past century, and the fascinating autobiographical reflections of the novelist Katherine Govier on her literary career and its Alberta influences. This collection demonstrates that Alberta writers, especially in the contemporary period, are not afraid to uncover, re-think, and re-imagine parts of Alberta history, thereby exposing what had been lain to rest as an unfinished business needing serious re-consideration

Abstract: The volume explores the work of two classic authors such as Capuana and Verga under the lens of the postcolonial perspective, accepting the thesis of the Italian unification process as an internal colonisation process. The author investigates the effects of colonisation on the representation of the Sicilian rural life, highlighting areas of ambiguity and hybridism in the writings of Capuana and Verga. The two writers, living between the colonised world and the colonising world, sometimes take part in the realisation of the hegemonic national discourse, sometimes create counter-discourses, in a never definitive alternation that makes the texts of the two Veristi rich and fascinating

Abstract: What is the common aspect linking the studies of this volume, which take into account very different authors such as Conte, Palazzeschi, Zanzotto, Caproni, Rosselli, Biagini, some crespuscolar poets, Leopardi, Annovi, Giuliani, and even some twentieth-century translations of R.M. Rilke? They share the belief that the poetic word - which etymologically has "creative" powers - generates cognitive perspectives altering our perception of the world. Reading poetry does not have an effect confined to the page and to the moment, but affects our relationship with reality, changes it and enriches it in an often unsuspected and surprising way. In this collection, the authors try to bring out a sort of epistemology of poetry, in order to clarify how it can contribute to illuminating our experience of the world and of ourselves. The reader is then invited to look beyond the boundaries traditionally established by the various disciplines, in the direction of mutual contamination and openness to innovative and unprecedented suggestions

Abstract: These days, it seems that many people are concerned with borders, confines, and walls more than ever. We chose "transcending borders" as the theme and title of the volume, hinting at the concept of bridging boundaries, in any possible context and domain, metaphorical or concrete. By proposing this theme, we want to reflect on the opportunities that are to be gained through the overcoming of borders, on what can be accomplished by calling into question old norms, on the implementations of less familiar norms, and on the renegotiation of individual limits and horizons. This collection gathers seven articles on the theme of borders: the first four articles deal with Chinese presence in Italy today; the three articles in the field of Japanese Studies elaborate on the concept of borders in literary terms

Abstract: Retracing Dessí's collaboration in the magazines "L'Orto", "Primato" and "Cronache" directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer's artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime

Abstract: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London's Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the 'sane other', shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period

Abstract: In early modern England, the birth of a human being with congenital physical deformities was an event which aroused horror and fascination, disgust and morbid curiosity. In a time when modern science was taking its first steps, this kind of prodigy sometimes appeared as a sort of divine punishment for a moral fault, sometimes as a bizarre pastime, or political weapon, or a pre-medical investigation. By deepening such a multifaceted and constantly changing phenomenon, "A Marvellous and Strange Event" tries to build a complex analysis perspective on the English cultural and social history between the 16th and 18th century

Abstract: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì's well-known "Dimore vitali"), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his "teacher" stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by "gratitude", "esteem" and "trust"

Abstract: Jeanne (Jane) Oulman Bensaude belonged to a Parisian Jewish upper middle class family related to the world of finance and fully involved in the cultural and political life of Paris in the second half of the nineteenth century. In Memorie Jane recalls the family environment, travels, readings, living rooms, meetings with poets and writers, musicians and politicians. She narrates her passion for music and writing, to which she dedicated herself in Lisbon, where she lived after the marriage to Alfredo Bensaude. The story of a development, of a life divided between France and Portugal, Jane's autobiography offers many reasons of interest: from within the Oulman family life, in the education of sons and daughters, in observance of the rites, in the interweaving of family affairs with the history of France, it represents a rare document of the process of assimilation of French Judaism to the values of the nation

Abstract: The volume Trasparenze ed epifanie. Quando la luce diventa letteratura, arte, storia, scienza ("Transparencies and epiphanies. When light becomes literature, art, history, science") brings together thirty contributions presented at the interdisciplinary conference organized at the University of Florence on the occasion of the International Year of Light 2015. Scholars in the fields of science, history, history of art and cinema, philosophy, philology, Italian and foreign literature and literature literary theory from seven departments of the Florentine university introduce various meanings and symbolic representations of the concept light during the ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary epoch. Moreover, they also propose a common "luminous journey" in the civilisation of open scientific and cultural discussion

Abstract: The work Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2015 stems from the international seminar that was held in Certaldo on the 9th September 2015, and is the second edition of an initiative which the ENGB National Association has now made an annual appointment. The purpose of these seminars, aimed primarily at young scholars, is to collect and develop the research prospects emerged in occasion of the centenary celebrations in 2013 and to offer a place for a new and contemporary discussion. The topics covered during the seminar, mainly focused on the Latin and vernacular work of Boccaccio, address (with specific attention to the Decameron) aspects of tradition and textual criticism, history of the language, literary criticism and history of the miniature

Abstract: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author's proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation

Abstract: This volume represents a targeted exploration of the theme of identity and conflict in the context of Tuscan Studies, an exploration which is enriched by the diverse disciplinary perspectives encompassed (history, literature, linguistics). The essays, which span the period from the nineteenth century to the present, examine conflict in terms of war but also as a form of struggle between different demographic groups or conflict based on gender and identity politics. This collection thus signals an original mode of analysis of the region, while drawing on the proven interest, both scholarly and popular, in its history, literature, language, art and society

Abstract: In Luigi Meneghello's work, the representation of the plant world refers to a subtext of images and symbols: a network of botanical isotopies which transforms into a system while allowing for an alternative and unprecedented reading. From the pages of Libera nos a malo (1963), up to the 'posthumous letters' of L'appendistato (2012), what the author calls «inframondo verdastro» becomes the starting point for the restoration of a literary biosphere, one which is constantly crossed by a double movement: intertextual memory and continuous interaction between Italian, English and the dialect from Vicenza (Italy). Meneghello's 'reflected garden' thus reveals itself in all its semantic value, and sheds light on a theme of surprisingly great complexity, and also a subject of particular interest for literary ecocriticism

Abstract: As playwright, actor, director, teacher, mentor, theatre administrator, and critic, Sharon Pollock has played an integral role in the shaping of Canada's national theatre tradition, and she continues to produce new works and to contribute to Canadian theatre as passionately as she has done over the past fifty years. Pollock is nationally and internationally respected for her work and support of the theatre community. She has also played a major role in informing Canadians about the "dark side" of their history and current events. This collection, comprised entirely of new and original assessments of her work and contribution to theatre, is both timely and long overdue. Includes a new play titled "Sharon's Tongue" by the Playing with Pollock Collective With contributions by: Kathy K. Y. Chung Donna Coates Carmen Derksen Sherrill Grace Martin Morrow Jeton Neziraj Wes Pearce Tanya Schaap Shelley Scott Jerry Wasserman Jason Weins Cynthia Zimmerman

Abstract: This book outlines a short profile of Italy's linguistic history, and discusses some current problems related to globalization, the values of the mother tongue and multilingualism, and the need to re-found the Italian and European linguistic policy on a new basis. Contemporary Italian is a particularly stratified cultural asset in which, alongside the many new elements, one can grasp the clear and precious signs of a very strong connection with the past. Today, in the European scene, Italy indeed stands out for its accentuated multilingualism and the long duration of its national language. On the one hand, the extraordinary animal and plant biodiversity in the country corresponds to an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity; on the other, the Italians feel that the language used by Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio still belongs to them, and has fundamental traits coinciding with their own. Such richness is particularly appreciated abroad (as evidenced by the growing demand for Italian speakers in the world) and deserves to be better acknowledged by the younger generations. It also deserves to be protected and valued with appropriate tools, starting with a decisive rethinking of the country's linguistic policy

Abstract: Within the Kafkaesque bestiary, the dog is undoubtedly the animal that deserves a more careful study: it is the image which the author uses the most, in literary writing but also in the private one, and which occupies a a very large time span, so much so that it becomes a real key figure through which to read Kafka's work from a possible new perspective. The volume aims to demonstrate how the problems that have characterized Kafka's existence are hidden behind the dog's symbology, the reflections around which he has concentrated, throughout his life, his thought and his writing: the woman and the question of marriage, writing itself, religion as a relationship with the divine

Abstract: Recent work on second language acquisition within the generative framework has pointed out interfaces (syntax-discourse, syntax-semantics, etc.) as a residual domain of vulnerability in L2. Rather than in core syntax, it is at the interface level that the divergence between native and non-native grammars has been shown to be more prominent. In this book the investigation of answering strategies and the focalization of new information subjects, which require access to the syntax-discourse interface, will be pursued. Data is collected through an oral elicitation task on Finnish and Italian, a rather unexplored language pair, in various stages of language development: advanced and intermediate L2 acquisition, L1 under L2 attrition, early bilingualism, child monolingual L1 development

Abstract: Margarete Susman (1872-1966), an important figure in German-speaking culture, was an essayist, Kulturtheoretikerin, philosopher, poet and painter. Her vast production - almost unknown in Italy - deals with a variety of topics: from literary criticism to interreligious dialogue, from the study of Romanticism to portraits of great personalities from the past and her time. This book investigates the 'feminine' in Susman from two points of view: from a formal perspective, it describes the path of a writer who, from the early 20th century, has moved between poetry and the essay, passing through the comparison with culture correspondence; from a thematic perspective, he examines the essays in which Susman deals with the sexual difference and the relationship between the 'male' and the 'female'

Abstract: The question on possible contact points between linguistics and literary studies has arisen several times in the international discussion on German studies. This volume takes part in this debate and, by enhancing the specific features of both fields of study, it aims at contributing to the search for new ways of comparison and scientific exchange. The eight essays collected in this miscellanea are characterized by the interpenetration of the literary and linguistic points of view, and develop paths of analysis in the following research fields: theory of literary comedy and of literary genres; linguistic studies of the literary text; language as an object of literary analysis; teaching of German as a second language (DaF)

Abstract: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi's careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí's presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the "mover of culture" and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer's most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before
