Abstract:
This book is a study-guide for A level students of English Literature. It is divided into two parts. The first ten chapters consist of close textual studies with extracts from the works of ten writers including: Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, T. S. Eliot, George Orwell and two contemporary writers: Judith Wright and David Williamson. In each of these chapters extracts are followed by analysis, questions and exercises for class work. Part Two looks in detail at aspects of language and language techniques - for example, irony, imagery, tone, sound devices - which may need more illustration and explanation, before all the questions in a close study can be answered by students. As in the first part, questions and exercises are included
