Abstract: For about ten years numerous studies have been carried out in France about roman lamps. This one, for the first time and for a masters' degree research, is oriented toward the systematic study of productions from several potters' workshops in Montans (Tarn), ail from welldated archaeological context. More than a simple descriptive inventory, the author gives us a chronology of the Ist and IInd centuries. Her analysis of three associated criteria (decoration/type/sig nature, mark), based upon the study of 900 pieces, reveals some original aspects of the potters' practice and leads to interesting interpretations about the technique used most of the time in Montans which consists in making moulds from lamps already in use

Abstract: Souterrains have in the past been the object of both varied and fanciful interpretations. Considered at different times to be places of refuge or worship, they have been attribued to periods ranging from pre-history to the French Revolution. The present study, first written as a doctoral thesis, examines94 souterrains in the Limousin region and analyses their geographical and historical significance. Research has included excavation of the Bois-du-Mont souterrain at Bessines-sur-Gartempe in the Haute-Vienne department. The result of the study proves that these underground chambers are related to rural settlement during IXth to XIIIth centuries. Archaeology provides firm evidence for when these structures were tunnelled, occupied and abandoned. The disciplined methodological approach of this work is exemplary in a field where scientific analysis has so far been virtually non-existent

Abstract: Settled at the end of the XIIIth century on an unexploited land of the seignory of Mont-Saint-Jean, in Auxois, the "grange du Mont" was abandoned a hundred years later ; it did not resist to the demographic and economie recession at the end of the XIVth century, although it had been built to farm a large territory in a permanent way, as shown by the size and the quality of the structures. The archaeological excavation, the study of the archives and the ethnographic research, associated in an exemplary way, have led to the reconstitution of the structure and aims of such an agro-pastoral settiement in the Middle Age conception. This study brings new informations about a type of farming settiement poorly known until now, the "grange", as well as about the artefacts and architecture of the rural settlements in mediaeval Burgundy

Abstract: The author's work constitutes the first synthesis, since Father Glory's work published in 1948, about an unknown aspect of Prehistoric art : postglacial symbolic paintings. This is an inventory ot the Provence painted sites made after systematic surveys which led to rectify interpretation and location mistakes and to put the sites in their archaeological context. This is also an approach to the delicate questions of datation, typology and interpretation. This work appears as a critical study and a documentary corpus necessary to keep in memory these Neolithic art witnesses which disappear more and more every year because of natural agents and vandalism

Abstract: The publication of excavations at Castellu throws an entirely new light upon late-Roman and early-medieval Corsica. The study includes an examination of the finds, most of which are of 6th century date, and an analysis of the faunal remains. The latter shows not only that domesticated species differed from those of the Iron-Age but also that eating habits had changed. The resulting picture is one of significant and long-lasting Romanisation of innerCorsica, and of ongoing trade relations with the rest of the Mediterranean region, even after the Vandal invasion. The publication marks a major step towards a new understanding of this period of Corsican history

Abstract: In 1985-86, rescue excavations around the gallo-roman baths city of Aquae Bormonis brought to the surface exceptional ceramic material: hundreds of figurines, archetypes and casts, mostly original, prove the existence of a large workshop still to be precisely localized. This book is a synthetic study of these finds as well as of the structures and other types of material such as: common and glazed ceramic, terra sigillata, lamps (probably manufactured on the site); amphorae, coins, metallic and faunal material. Through the new chronological, typological and trading data exposed this volume is essential for people studying ceramic and any archaeologist working on the gallo-roman period

Abstract: The abundance of megaliths on the cost of Brittany has hidden for a long time the existence of megaliths inside the peninsula This work summarizes four years on the field (1982-1985) and brings new informations about this type of architecture, ignored until now, through three monuments from the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. Laboratory studies add to classical field data informations allowing to replace the megaliths in their environment and to demonstrate the existence of an economic system based upon exchange, ending the myth of autarky inside "the large forest". This work also analyses modem acculturations of these monuments settled in an area where celtic and arthurian legend is still very much alive

Abstract: The study of the burials and cemeteries of the Roman world still suffers from an almost complete lack of regional surveys which, alone, would allow archaeologists to develop wide-ranging synthèses and a better approach of relationships between the world of the living and that of the dead. In the following work, written as a Ph. D. thesis, the author, basing his argumentation on a detailed analysis of the Roman graves discovered in the Armorican peninsula, has attempted to explore their nature and structure, and to show how, in their variety, they closely relate to the cultural diversity of the western Gaulish Civitates

Abstract: Stéphanie Thiébault is a Research Fellow with the CNRS. In this work, based upon her doctoral thesis, the author considers the relationship between Man and the plant world during the Holocene period and examines this era of significant cultural change along a south-north axis from the Mediterranean to the Savoy. This comprehensive study is the first of its kind to be carried out in the area for this period: over 10,000 charcoal samples, taken from six highly-stratified deposits in the south-western Pre-Alps are analysed and the wood species identified. As a result, this book is also an excellent introduction to the methods of anthracology (the identifying of wood species from charcoal remains). The author assesses the method's potential for ecological reconstructions of ancient landscapes and climates, as well as its implications for palaeethnology. Conceived as the first stage of a larger project, this study lays the ground-work for future discussion of palaeobotany in the regions examined

Abstract: Based on the author's Master's dissertation, this study deals with Gallo-Roman building materials made from fired clay : particular attention is paid to the firing stage in the production of these materials. The author's inventory of 142 identified tile factories in France has enabled her to provide new information on kiln technology, to establish a typology and to propose a possible chronological sequence. Although work of this kind has been carried out in Great Britain, a similar study had not been done for France. F. Le Ny's timely remedy to this problem casts light upon an industry which has seldom been studied. The author is currently working on a doctoral thesis in archaeological science at the University of Rennes I

Abstract: Qu'est-ce qu'un bourgeois ?

Abstract: This work, which summarises the author's doctoral dissertation, presents an original approach to the study of lamps from the Early Roman Empire. Using a method more often applied to the study of samian pottery, the author has carried out a systematic analysis of the associations of signature, form and decoration. The purpose of the study was to verify a hypothesis, that characteristic types could be associated with a spécifie potter's signature, and, at the same time, to identify actual workshops. The research is successful not only in demonstrating the existence of significant connections between several potters, but also in questioning the uncritical use, still frequently made, of chronoiogical typologies. The author argues for setting up reference corpora of makers stamps and decorative marks and for cataloguing characteristic forms, thus enabling the lamp to play a significant rôle in the archaeological evidence, as well as bringing to light a new craft

Abstract: This monograph describes archaeological excavation carried out at a silver mine known to have been worked during the second half of the sixteenth century. The mine, named "The St-Louis Vein", is situated in the district of Ste-Marie-aux-Mines in the Haut-Rhin department of France. The study of the site introduces new methods to the archaeology of mining : the interdisciplinary approach adopted is a model of collaboration between archaeologist, speleologist and geologist. The project involves archival research, a survey of surface and belowground remains and the use of archaeological evidence to analyse how the mine was constructed and worked. The mineralogical, structural and climatological aspects of the site are also discussed. The study succeeds in reconstructing the life-history of an ancient mine located in one of the most historically interesting mining areas of Europe

Abstract: This work is the result of rescue archaeology carried out at Feurs (Loire) from 1978 to 1981. A series of excavations on the site of the Roman town revealed an earlier Gaulish settlement at its height during the late La Tène period. The discovery of evidence of pre-Roman occupation was completely unexpected since the cantonal capital of the Segusiavi, Forum Segusiavorum, was founded by Augustus and its origins were assumed to date from this period. Based upon the systematic analysis of a large number of finds series, the author's study outlines how the different aspects of the Gaulish settlement of the site developed during the century preceding Caesar's conquest. Seen within the context of inner Gaul, Feurs is of fundamental importance to our understanding of Gaulish civilisation at the end of the Iron Age

Abstract: This volume includes the Acts of the IXth Conference of the A.F.P.M.A. (French Antique Wall Paintings Association), one of the majorthemes of which is the graphic restitution of fragmentary paintings, tracings and colour rendering, problems which are common to other sectors of archaeology. These restitutions, which are linked to restorations, must be came out in accordance with very strict principles, which respect completely what is left of the original work. The advantages of exchanges between archaeologists and restorers are here made obvious, with reports from both professions on the same, often unpublished, paintings. The second theme concerns the iconography, as a reconstitution calls on a knowledge of the various decorative and figurative themes employed and which vary in accordance with the possible interpretations. Both archaeologists and restorers will find this publication offers food for thought in the daily details of their work

Abstract: Norbert Aujoulat is head of the cave art section at the National Prehistory Centre in Perigueux (Ministry of Culture and Communication/Department of Archaeology). The descriptive analysis of a prehistoric painting or engraving depends, to a great extent, on its reproduction, which, in its turn, depends on a specific methodology and appropriate material. This book is a synthesis of earlier work dealing with reproduction techniques and is also the result of several years of personal research into the photographic recording of data and their Processing by computer in the laboratory. Highly didactic, it is intended as a practical manual, indispensable for any research in the field of cave art

Abstract: « Vous ne pourrez manger aucune bête crevée ».

Abstract: The site at Canneville (Oise) has been known since the XIXth century, mainly through surface finds until the rescue excavation in 1974-75. It supplied the material which is studied here by D. Hamard. The few badly damaged sherds allow nevertheless Canneville to be placed between Phase II and III of the Chasseen of northern France. On the other hand more than 3 000 lithic artefacts make up an homogeneous flint assemblage. Statistical studies lead toa suitable descriptive method and throw light on the raw material management System. This book opens up the way to a definition of the lithic assemblage of the Chasseen of northern France and fits into a field of research which is presently proceeding towards a periodisation of this culture

Abstract: This book is intended to fill a senous gap which bas become wider and wider with every year that passes : the absence of an easily accessible source of information about one of the most successful and flourishing enterprises of Roman Gaul. the terra siglata industry. The volume is a collective work by over forty different archaeologists Defined by a research team pi me CNRS, the work include two complementary sets of contribution: a series of 45 notices, each on dedicated to a particular workshop (some of the workshops have been extensively dug, others have only been prospected); a series of 15 reports, some address problems of general methodology and regional history, others are concerned with the relations with the workshops in Switzerland and the Rhine Valley. The major interest of this collection of papers is that it brings to us an up to date inventory of production sites (its predecessor dates from 1968). Its originality is to have established, for the first time, a uniform series of descriptions, one per workshop, covering a wide range of headings The same information is thus available for all the workshops in a form that allows valid comparisons to be made

Abstract: This third D.A.F. volume publishes papers presented at the symposium on landscape archaeology, organised in 1982 by A. Ferdière and E. Zadora-Rio. Fieldwork and landscape studies have today entered more than ever into present archaeological thinking. Such studies are not now limited just to evidence from excavated sites, but to the surrounding natural and human environment, permitting the reconstruction of earlier landscapes. Fieldwork, now established as a discipline in its own right, enables the relationship between actual sites and exploitation sequences of their associated landscape to be better understood. Taking into account the theoretical and practical impossibilities of total fieldwork, speakers at this symposium, in both their communications and during discussions, presented different choices of objectives and methods, and analysed the strengths and weaknesses of each technique adopted

Abstract: In this publication, Jacques Thiriot, a research worker with the CNRS, presents the results of the fieldwork carried out between 1972 and 1979 on the mediaeval grey pottery workshops of the Uzege and the Lower Rhone, in particular at Saint-Victor-des-Oules in the Gard (XIIth and XIIIth cent.) and Bollene in the Vaucluse (XIIIth cent.). During this work, a methodology adapted to the excavation and interpretation of the remains (ovens and buildings) was perfected, thanks to a rigorous technical analysis. It provided an exceptional insight into production methods in one of the largest mediaeval potter's workshops in south-east France. It has also completed typological data based on pottery found during excavations in user centres, not only in Provence but also in Languedoc. Apart from the subject, rarely dealt with for the mediaeval period, the originality of the work lies in the systematic use of geophysical prospection and scientific methods of dating and in the application of an ethno-archaeological approach which gives a better understanding of mediaeval pottery activities in the region

Abstract: Relay-point on a roman road, the oppidum of Ambrussum is a major site concerning conditions and aspects of the romanisation in the region of Nîmes. Two houses with internal courtyards were already known and dated from the first century AD and form an insula of secteur I. Research conducted from 1976 to 1980 in secteur IV revealed a house of the same type with its dependancies. Following an analysis based on the conditions of implantation, occupation and abandonment, their architecture and distribution of the finds, these constructions appear to be an original expression of gallo-roman habitations. Situated in their local and regional contexts, they reflect the process of urbanisation and social differenciation, and of the village type exploitation existence

Abstract: In this book Patrice Brun critically examines the "Urnfield Culture" concept and the migration model that it implies. After reexamining the Paris Basin evidence, he presents a comparative study of closed finds from outside the region As a result, the traditional interpretation is rejected. Two clear breaks are evident in the development of material culture between the 13th and 7th centuries B.C. These breaks coincide with major socio-economic changes which. Far from being restricted to the Paris Basin, affect a large part of Europe. They also coincide with the transformations that led to the emergence of urban civilisations in Greece and Italy

Abstract: In this paper, Jean Gascó (chargé de Recherche, Centre d'Anthropologie des Sociétés Rurales, E.R. 289 du C.N.R.S.) examines domestic structures which date from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze âge, excavated at the rock shelters of « Font-Juvénal » and « Roc-de-Dourgne » (Aude, France). Currently the study of such domestic structures is subject to detailed examination in France and has produced an abondance of material and elements to interpret concerning the typology, fonction, cultural data, evolution and typology of such structures. This research has lead to a typological approach of prehistoric domestic structures in Mediterranean Languedoc region and complements studies which have up to the moment concerned essentially the upper Paleolithic of northern France

Abstract: Earth and wood constructions of the Roman era were, until several years ago, very little known. Recent excavations have provided us with considerable information. This work attempts to answer primary questions such as : are these protohistorical survivals ? what construction techniques were used ? what socio-economic conditions do they correspond to ? The textual and archaeological approach go along with informationobtained by contemporary experiments
