    Abstract: Eine interdisziplinäre Analyse von Aushandlungsprozessen staatlicher Herrschaft am Beispiel des habsburgischen Befestigungsbaus in Galizien nach 1848.Die Revolution von 1848/49 stellte die Habsburgermonarchie vor existentielle Herausforderungen. Nur mit militärischer Gewalt konnte dieser Staat zusammengehalten und die habsburgische Herrschaft im Inneren gesichert werden. Die folgenden Jahre waren gekennzeichnet von einer überragenden Stellung des Militärs und einer umfassenden Modernisierung des habsburgischen Staates.Frank Rochow zeigt an Fallstudien zu Lemberg und Krakau, dass Befestigungsbauten nicht nur Ausdruck, sondern auch ein wesentliches Instrument zur Umsetzung dieses Prozesses waren. Über die detaillierte Analyse der Planungs- und Realisierungsgeschichte der Bauprojekte arbeitet er die Mechanismen heraus, mit denen der habsburgische Staat versuchte, sein Territorium gegen polnische Unabhängigkeitsbestrebungen zu behaupten und flächendeckend zu durchdringen. Die Unzulänglichkeiten des habsburgischen Verwaltungsapparates und die Herausforderungen durch lokale Akteur:innen setzten diesem Herrschaftsanspruch jedoch Grenzen, deren genauer Verlauf in der Interaktion vor Ort immer wieder neu ausgehandelt wurde. Daraus ergibt sich ein dynamisches Bild staatlicher Herrschaft zu einem kritischen Zeitpunkt des habsburgischen Staatsbildungsprozesses

    Abstract: Bread, peace, freedom - this was the motto of the French Popular Front (Front Populaire), which formed France's government from 1936 to 1938. With its anti-fascist focus, the French Popular Front movement was also attractive to refugees from Nazi Germany and offered them a platform to make a political statement. Exiled musicians helped to shape the Popular Front by making music, composing and agitating for the common cause. The book sheds light on the multifaceted involvement of exiled musicians in the Front Populaire. This includes their membership in agitprop and cabaret groups, their participation in political films and radio broadcasts, their composing and performing of political pieces of music, their reflection on political circumstances in the context of the Saar referendum campaign or the Workers' Music Olympics in Strasbourg.     Abstract: Brot, Friede, Freiheit – so lautete die Devise der französischen Volksfront (Front Populaire), die von 1936 bis 1938 Frankreichs Regierung stellte. Mit ihrem antifaschistischen Schwerpunkt war die französische Volksfrontbewegung auch für Flüchtlinge aus NS-Deutschland attraktiv und bot ihnen eine Plattform der politischen Stellungnahme. Exilierte Musikerinnen und Musiker gestalteten die Volksfront mit, indem sie für die gemeinsame Sache musizierten, komponierten und agitierten. Das Buch beleuchtet das facettenreiche Engagement exilierter Musikerinnen und Musiker im Rahmen des Front Populaire.     Abstract: Even though material cultural studies recently show an increasing interest in questions of normativity, the topic as it is discussed there - in contrast to the project of "legal analysis as cultural research" - nevertheless competes with phenomena of diversity, singularity, or situativity, which currently receive much more attention as key topics of the present. Seeing that, against this background, aesthetics has an ambivalent, tense, or even paradoxical relationship to the normative, cultural studies are also challenged to address the topic in their respective subject areas. The volume picks up here and reflects the problem of aesthetic normativity in music fundamentally and exemplarily with contributions from music history, pop music research, music theory, ethnomusicology, music sociology and sound studies.

    Abstract: Music, as the form of art whose name derives from ancient myths, is often thought of as pure symbolic expression and associated with transcendence. Music is also a universal phenomenon and thus a profound marker of humanity. These features make music a sphere of activity where sacred and popular qualities intersect and amalgamate. In an era characterised by postsecular and postcolonial processes of religious change, re-enchantment and alternative spiritualities, the intersections of the popular and the sacred in music have become increasingly multifarious. In the book, the cultural dynamics at stake are approached by stressing the extended and multiple dimensions of the sacred and the popular, hence challenging conventional, taken-for-granted and rigid conceptualisations of both popular music and sacred music. At issue are the cultural politics of labelling music as either popular or sacred, and the disciplinary and theoretical implications of such labelling. Instead of focussing on specific genres of popular music or types of religious music, consideration centres on interrogating musical situations where a distinction between the popular and the sacred is misleading, futile and even impossible. The topic is discussed in relation to a diversity of belief systems and different repertoires of music, including classical, folk and jazz, by considering such themes as origin myths, autonomy, ingenuity and stardom, authenticity, moral ambiguity, subcultural sensibilities and political ideologies

    Abstract: Chopin habe über alle Maßen gesanglich gespielt, berichten viele Zeitgenossen. Was das aber konkret pianistisch heißt, bleibt meist im Dunkeln. Neue Quellen von Chopin-Schülern ermöglichen nun tiefere Einblicke: Chopins kantabler Duktus war in seinem Spiel quasi omnipräsent, erzeugt durch ein umfassendes Überlegato sowie melodische, auch vom Belcanto inspirierte Hervorhebungen. Gleichzeitig wurden die nicht als melodisch erachteten Kontexttöne oft erheblich zurückgenommen, gerade in virtuosen Passagen – eine überraschende Erkenntnis, die das gesamte Klavierwerk Chopins betrifft. Die prägenden Interpretationen der letzten Jahrzehnte entsprechen also nicht dem, was Chopin ursprünglich intendierte. Die vorliegende Studie zeichnet ein neues Bild von Chopins brillanten Werken und rekonstruiert eine höchst eigenwillige Klanglichkeit, die auf historischen wie auf modernen Konzertflügeln verwirklicht werden kann.

Darüber hinaus schuf Schütz mit seinen Historienkompositionen (Auferstehung, Weihnachten) und seinen drei Passionen gewichtige Beiträge zur Geschichte des Oratoriums. Zu seinen weltlichen Werken gehören neben einer frühen Sammlung italienischer Madrigale mehrere theatralische Stücke, die leider alle verloren sind.

    Abstract: Unmittelbar nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs errichtete die Sowjet­union monumentale Siegesdenkmäler in den Zentren Wiens (Schwarzenbergplatz) und Berlins (Tiergarten). 1949 folgte als dritte Anlage das Ehrenmal in Berlin-Treptow, das größte Monument seiner Art außerhalb der Sowjetunion. Neben ihrer Funktion als Ruhestätte für die Gefallenen der Roten Armee sollten diese Anlagen in beiden Hauptstädten als dauerhafte Symbole sowjetischer Präsenz dienen. Erstmals werden die drei Denkmalsanlagen auf einer breiten Quellenbasis vergleichend untersucht sowie kunsthistorisch und erinnerungskulturell eingeordnet. Die Studie zeichnet ihre Entstehungsgeschichte nach und leuchtet in einer langen zeitlichen Perspektive ihre Nutzung und geschichtspolitische Bedeutung in den unterschiedlichen politischen Systemen vielfältig aus.

    Abstract: The Original Portrayal of Mozart’s Don Giovanni offers an original reading of Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s opera Don Giovanni, using as a lens the portrayal of the title role by its creator, the baritone Luigi Bassi (1766–1825). Although Bassi was coached in the role by the composer himself, his portrayal has never been studied in depth before, and this book presents a large number of new sources (first- and second-hand accounts), which allows us to reconstruct his performance scene by scene. The book confronts Bassi’s portrayal with a study of the opera’s early German reception and performance history, demonstrating how Don Giovanni as we know it today was not only created by Mozart, Da Ponte and Luigi Bassi but also by the early German adapters, translators, critics and performers who turned the title character into the arrogant and violent villain we still encounter in most of today’s stage productions. Incorporating discussion of dramaturgical thinking of the late Enlightenment and the difficult moral problems that the opera raises, this is an important study for scholars and researchers from opera studies, theatre and performance studies, music history as well as conductors, directors and singers

    Abstract: Schon vor 50 Jahren kämpfte Afrika um seine Kunst, die während der Kolonialzeit massenweise in europäische Museen gelangt war. Und es fand durchaus Unterstützung im Westen. Am Ende jedoch war der Kampf nicht nur vergebens, er wurde auch erfolgreich vergessen gemacht. Auf der Grundlage von unzähligen unbekannten Quellen aus Europa und Afrika erzählt Bénédicte Savoy die gespenstische Geschichte einer verpassten Chance, einer Niederlage, die heute mit umso größerer Wucht auf uns zurückschlägt. Afrikas Bemühungen um seine in der Kolonialzeit nach Europa verbrachte Kunst sind keineswegs neu. Schon bald nach 1960, als 18 ehemalige Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit erlangten, wurde von afrikanischen Intellektuellen, Politikern und Museumsleuten eine ungeheure Dynamik in Gang gesetzt. In ganz Europa suchten daraufhin Politikerinnen und Politiker, Journalisten, Akademiker und einige Museumsleute einen Weg, afrikanische Kulturgüter im Sinne einer postkolonialen und postrassistischen Solidarität zurückzugeben. Die Argumente aber, mit denen andere versuchten, die Forderungen aus Afrika zu entkräften und Lösungen zu verhindern, ähneln auf frappierende Weise denen von heute. Schließlich verlief alles im Sand. „Gebt koloniale Raubkunst zurück! Dafür engagiert sich Bénédicte Savoy. In ihrem Buch zeigt die Kunsthistorikerin nun, dass ihr Kampf ein alter ist. Schon in den 1960er-Jahren drängten die neu gegründeten Staaten Afrikas auf eine Rückführung – erfolglos.     Abstract: »This video is not available in your country.« With this sentence, the video platform YouTube fueled many years of dispute with the German collecting society GEMA. Numerous online discussions focused on the appropriate remuneration for music streaming – GEMA bashing followed. Music and copyright have always been a contentious issue. Digitization set in motion a process that changed the way music and other creative goods are produced, consumed, distributed and exploited. This break undermined previous business models of the music industry and shook basic assumptions in the understanding of copyright. Philip Stade focuses on the particular online discourse YouTube vs. GEMA and, in the spirit of cultural studies, opens up interdisciplinary and historical perspectives on the fields of music business, copyright and capitalism in the digital transformation. The focus is on hegemonic strategies and the central role of social media. Even though the social and economic upheavals of the digital transformation are far from complete, Stade precisely elaborates which overarching shifts are taking place in the relationship between exclusive control and free access. For we are only just beginning to understand how digital capitalism works

In zahlreichen Online-Diskussionen ging es um die angemessene Vergütung für das Musikstreaming - das GEMA-Bashing folgte. Musik und Urheberrecht waren und sind ein konfliktreiches Thema. Mit der Digitalisierung setzte ein Prozess ein, der die Art veränderte, Musik und andere kreative Güter zu produzieren, zu konsumieren, zu verbreiten und zu verwerten. Diese Zäsur untergrub bisherige Geschäftsmodelle der Musikwirtschaft und erschütterte Grundannahmen im Urheberrechtsverständnis. Philip Stade richtet den Blick auf den besonderen Online-Diskurs YouTube vs. GEMA und eröffnet im Sinne der Cultural Studies interdisziplinäre und historische Sichtweisen auf die Felder Musikwirtschaft, Urheberrecht und Kapitalismus im digitalen Wandel. Im Fokus stehen dabei hegemoniale Strategien sowie die zentrale Rolle Sozialer Medien. Auch wenn die gesellschaftlichen und ökonomischen Umwälzungen des digitalen Wandels längst nicht abgeschlossen sind, arbeitet Stade präzise heraus, welche übergeordneten Verschiebungen im Verhältnis von exklusiver Kontrolle und freiem Zugang stattfinden.     Abstract: Hans Semper was born in 1845 to well known architect Gottfried Semper, who is most famous for creating the „Semperoper“ in Dresden. This study gives insight into his academic and personal biography. Semper was called to the University of Innsbruck as a private lecturer in 1876 to establish the recently founded discipline of art history. While teaching and researching until his retirement from professorship in 1916, Semper, as the first tenured professor, created an institute that could easily stand up to comparison with the larger universities of Vienna, Munich or Berlin. For this, he used state of the art teaching materials, such as photographies, diapositives, printed works and an extensive academic library, all of which later became the foundation of the „Sempersammlung“.

    Abstract: In 1933, John A. Lomax and his son Alan set out as emissaries for the Library of Congress to record the folksong of the “American Negro” in several southern African American prisons. Listening to the Lomax Archive: The Sonic Rhetorics of African American Folksong in the 1930s asks how the Lomaxes’ field recordings—including their prison recordings and a long-form oral history of jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton—contributed to a new mythology of Americana for a nation in the midst of financial, social, and identity crises. Stone argues that folksongs communicate complex historical experiences in a seemingly simple package, and can thus be a key element—a sonic rhetoric—for interpreting the ebb and flow of cultural ideals within contemporary historical moments. He contends that the Lomaxes, aware of the power of folk music, used the folksongs they collected to increase national understanding of and agency for the subjects of their recordings even as they used the recordings to advance their own careers. Listening to the Lomax Archive gives readers the opportunity to listen in on these seemingly contradictory dualities, demonstrating that they are crucial to the ways that we remember and write about the subjects of the Lomaxes’ archive and other repositories of historicized sound.     Abstract: "TECHNOCRATS OF THE IMAGINATION traces the rise of collaborative art and technology labs in the U.S. from WWII to the present. Ryan Bishop and John Beck reveal the intertwined histories of the avant-garde art movement and the military-industrial complex, showing how radical pedagogical practices traveled from Germany's Bauhaus movement to the U.S. art world and interacted with government-funded military research and development in university laboratories. During the 1960s both media labs and studio labs leaned heavily on methods of interdisciplinary collaboration and the power of American modernity to model new modes of social organization. The book's chapters take up MIT's Center for Art, Science, and Technology, Bell Labs's E.A.T. (Experiments in Art and Technology) Salon, and Los Angeles Museum of Art's Art + Technology Program. Their interconnected history illuminates how much of contemporary media culture and aesthetics depends on the historical relationship between military, corporate, and university actors. In light of revived interest in Black Mountain College and other 1960s art and technology labs, this book draws important connections between the contemporary art world and the militarized lab model of research that has dominated the sciences since the 1950s. The authors situate the rise of collaborative art and technology projects in the 1960s within John Dewey's ideology of scientific democracy, showing how leading thinkers from the Bauhaus movement in Germany immigrated to the U.S. and brought with them a Deweyan model for collaborative and interdisciplinary art and technology research. Over the course of the decade, the U.S. government increased funding to scientific research at university and private laboratories. Beck and Bishop investigate how various art and technology projects incorporated the collaborative and innovative interdisciplinarity of the avant-garde art movement with the corporate funding structure driven by the U.S. government's military and technoscientific interests. Finally, the authors consider the legacy of 1960s art and technology projects. During the 1970s and 80s, defense R&D funding was less motivated by a Cold War corporate state, and was instead restructured according to an entrepreneurial and neoliberal model. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems.     Abstract: "This project is the first book length study of the ney, the Sufi reed flute long associated with Islam and disdained after the establishment of the Turkish Republic. Based on extensive field research and an apprentice-style method of inquiry, the book explores the remarkable revival of ney-playing among urban dwellers in Turkey today: in Istanbul and other urban centers, and in a plethora of new pedagogical sites ranging from private ney studios to cultural and religious associations, from university clubs to local mosque organizations. The author, Banu Şenay, documents the lifelong preparation required to become a skilled practitioner of the ney, examining in particular the transformative power of this Islamic art pedagogy to cultivate new aesthetic and ethical perceptions in learners.     Abstract: From the mid-1950s to the late 1970s, jazz was harnessed as America’s "sonic weapon" to promote an image to the world of a free and democratic America. Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and other well-known jazz musicians were sent around the world – including to an array of Communist countries – as "jazz ambassadors" in order to mitigate the negative image associated with domestic racial problems. While many non-Americans embraced the Americanism behind this jazz diplomacy without question, others criticized American domestic and foreign policies while still appreciating jazz – thus jazz, despite its popularity, also became a medium for expressing anti-Americanism. This book examines the development of jazz outside America, including across diverse historical periods and geographies – shedding light on the effectiveness of jazz as an instrument of state power within a global political context.

Iran's particular system of traditional Persian art music has been long treated as the product of an ever-evolving, ancient Persian culture. In Music of a Thousand Years, Ann E.     Abstract: Headdresses and coverings are among the most powerful vehicles of cultural identity, referring variously to nationality, gender, ethnicity, religion, profession and sub-culture. As part of a cultural identity, they can be used to distinguish or divide people, but may also serve as a constructive instrument that allows us to recognise mutual differences as a common value.Cultural identity is continuously evolving. Photos and texts provide a vehicle to question prevailing dynamics of identity and identification, visual stereotypes and cultural representation. Daniela Dossi's long-term residency at the open and collective studio Manoeuvre, a multidisciplinary artist-run space in Ghent's Rabot neighbourhood, resulted in an open design method, a textile research project based on a visual and textual archive of headdresses from around the world, and a preliminary collection of hybrid headdresses. The super-diversity of the studio provided the ideal context for this research. Together with Dossi, participants from diverse backgrounds and origins made 800 textile samples by hand using different techniques. Based on this open system, new hybrid headdresses and narratives can be designed by remixing images, texts and textiles: what might the headdress of the first Mexican, female President of the United States look like, for example? 'Hybrid Heads' is a project by Daniela Dossi and Manoeuvre. It is also an exhibition, an interactive installation, a web platform and a design-educational programme.     Abstract: In The Race of Sound Nina Sun Eidsheim traces the ways in which sonic attributes that might seem natural, such as the voice and its qualities, are socially produced. Eidsheim illustrates how listeners measure race through sound and locate racial subjectivities in vocal timbre—the color or tone of a voice. Eidsheim examines singers Marian Anderson, Billie Holiday, and Jimmy Scott as well as the vocal synthesis technology Vocaloid to show how listeners carry a series of assumptions about the nature of the voice and to whom it belongs. Outlining how the voice is linked to ideas of racial essentialism and authenticity, Eidsheim untangles the relationship between race, gender, vocal technique, and timbre while addressing an undertheorized space of racial and ethnic performance. In so doing, she advances our knowledge of the cultural-historical formation of the timbral politics of difference and the ways that comprehending voice remains central to understanding human experience, all the while advocating for a form of listening that would allow us to hear singers in a self-reflexive, denaturalized way.
