    Abstract: "The contributors to Biopolitics, Geopolitics, Life investigate biopolitics and geopolitics as two distinct yet entangled techniques of settler colonial states across the globe, from the Americas and Hawai'i to Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand. Drawing on literary and cultural studies, social sciences, political theory, visual culture, and film studies, they show how biopolitics and geopolitics produce norms of social life and land use that delegitimize and target Indigenous bodies, lives, lands, and political formations. Among other topics, the contributors explore the representations of sexual violence against Native women in literature, Indigenous critiques of the carceral state in North America, Indigenous Elders' refusal of dominant formulations of aging, the governance of Indigenous peoples in Guyana, the displacement of Guaraní in Brazil, and the 2016 rule to formally acknowledge a government-to-government relationship between the US federal government and the Native Hawaiian community. Throughout, the contributors contend that Indigenous life and practices cannot be contained and defined by the racialization and dispossession of settler colonialism, thereby pointing to the transformative potential of an Indigenous-centered decolonization. Its main hypothesis is that poetry holds considerable potential for (post-)digital language, image, and media criticism. The visual dimensions of recent poetry encompass, for instance, kinetic writing in digital poetry, visual elements in social media poems, and (spoken and written) text-image interactions in poetry films as well as in book poetry. The articles examine these medial correlations and their political implications by asking how visual culture is applied, exposed, and debated in poetry. This volume brings together contributions by authors from various countries working in disciplines such as literary, media, and film studies, linguistics, cultural and visual culture studies, and in poetic practice. It covers poetry in English, German, Norwegian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, and also multilingual works.     Abstract: Vielfältige (Be-)Deutungen und vielgestaltige, komplexe Formen. Das »Ganze« könnte kaum diverser sein - und damit von größter Aktualität. Die politischen Krisen der Gegenwart (Klimawandel, Migration, Pandemie) verlangen nach globalen und ganzheitlichen Lösungen, während Ganzheit aufgrund der Totalitarismuserfahrungen des 20. Jahrhunderts zugleich eine in Verruf geratene Kategorie ist. Dieser Spannung haben sich die Geisteswissenschaften seit einigen Jahren verstärkt zu stellen versucht. Galt das Ganze v. a. der Idealismuskritik lange als suspekt, geht die Verabschiedung überkommener Totalitätsmodelle derzeit oft mit der Erprobung neuer Vorstellungen von Ganzheit einher. Ausgehend von diesem Befund fragt der Band nach der inneren Organisation, den Ausdrucksweisen und den Formen, die das Ganze konzeptionell überhaupt erst generieren. Neben begriffsgeschichtlichen Überblicken etwa zu ‚System‘, ‚Organismus‘, ‚Aggregat‘ oder ‚Gestalt‘ werden dabei die historischen Konjunkturen einer genuinen Vielfalt des Ganzen in der philosophischen, ökologischen, literarischen und poetologischen Tradition untersucht.

    Abstract: "The dystopian transformation of contemporary societies that has expanded to various parts of the world and to diverse domains of human activities requires a rethinking of our conceptual repertoire rather than the reinvention of neologisms. The terms that we consider as belonging to a political lexicon need to be understood in relation to a constellation of concepts and a diversity of experiences across different societies in both comparative and relational terms. Chapters in Words and Worlds are organized around individual terms that form part of a political lexicon that many use to understand what is unfolding before their eyes. The juxtaposition of these different terms and the cross references that show unexpected connections across diverse domains of social life, whether concentrated in small spaces or dispersed across vastly distant ones, challenge the reader to see these dystopian developments through a different modality of reading and sensing. Words like knowledge, authority, democracy, corruption, inequality, and crisis have become part of our everyday vocabulary; yet, what animates these words, what give them life, what makes them dead, urges us to examine these common vocabularies from new and different angles rather than using them as crutches to avoid facing current disturbing realities"--

    Abstract: A growing number of scholars hold that rather than fixed and pre-determined, race is created out of continuous and repeated discourses emerging from individuals and institutions within specific histories, political economic systems, and everyday interactions. This handbook demonstrates how linguistic analysis brings a crucial perspective to this project by revealing the ways in which language and race are mutually constituted as social realities. Not only do we position issues of race, racism, and racialization as central to language-based scholarship, but we also examine these processes from an explicitly critical and anti-racist perspective.     Abstract: Die Beiträge zu diesem Sammelband beleuchten anhand von Fallbeispielen verschiedene Aspekte der turko-iranischen Welt von der Islamisierung ab dem 7. Jahrhundert bis in die heutige Zeit. Im breiten geographischen Spektrum vom Bosporus über die Ǧazīra, Iran, Afghanistan und Zentralasien bis nach Indien und zu den Grenzgebieten Chinas widmen sich Einzelfallstudien aus historischer, philologischer, literaturwissenschaftlicher und ethnologischer Perspektive den Studien von Stadt-, Lokal- und Regionalgeschichte, verschiedenen Formen von Geschichtsschreibung und Fragen von Herrschaftslegitimation. Obgleich bei der Bearbeitung von genremäßig unterschiedlichen Textmaterialien und Dokumenten methodisch ebenso diverse Ansätze und Fragestellungen zu Tage treten, bieten die vorliegenden Beiträge ein anschauliches Bild der turko-iranischen Welt in Geschichte und Gegenwart, die als Motor der Geistes- und Politikgeschichte der Welt des Islams seit jeher eine herausragende Position eingenommen hat. Als eurasische Schnitt- und Anschlussstelle zur Seidenstraße und später zu den russischen (Zentralasien, Iran), britischen (Indien, Iran) sowie chinesischen (Ost-Turkestan) Hegemoniebestrebungen war diese Großregion seit der Dissoziation der souveränen islamischen Herrschaften ein ständiger Zankapfel der Fremdmächte, was schließlich im 20. Jahrhundert zur ihrer Aufteilung in verschiedene Interessenssphären geführt hat. Auch aus dieser Perspektive will dieser Sammelband implizit auf den zentralen Stellenwert dieser Großregion in den letzten 14 Jahrhunderten hinweisen.

The Oxford Handbook of Morphological Theory is a comprehensive guide through this jungle of morphological theories. It provides a rich and up-to-date overview of theoretical frameworks, from Structuralism to Optimality Theory and from Minimalism to Construction Morphology. In the core part of the handbook (Part II), each theory is introduced by a practitioner, who guides the reader through its principles and technicalities, its advantages and disadvantages. All chapters are written to be accessible, authoritative, and critical. Cross-references reveal agreements and disagreements among frameworks, and a rich body of references encourages further reading. As well as introducing individual theories, the volume speaks to the bigger picture. Part I identifies time-honoured issues in word-formation and inflection that have set the theoretical scene.     Abstract: This volume offers an introduction to current research in event structure, the study of the role of events in grammar. This area of study breaks down into several interrelated questions: How do we perceive events? How do events as objects of perception relate to linguistic event descriptions? What structural distinctions can we make among events, and how are these distinctions reflected grammatically? How do events relate to their participants? To what extent does syntax constrain the grammar of event descriptions? The handbook reflects the growth of this field, from three foundational hypotheses: that action sentences are predicates of event variables (Davidson), that verb meanings can be divided into a small number of aspectual classes (Vendler), and that verb meanings can be partly decomposed into a small set of recurring primitives (Lakoff, McCawley). Part I considers the implications of the Davidsonian event variable for aspects of natural language metaphysics; Part II considers the relationship of event structure to morphosyntax; Part III focuses on crosslinguistic variation in event descriptions; and Part IV covers less narrowly grammatical aspects of event structure.

    Abstract: This handbook is the first volume to provide a comprehensive, in-depth, and balanced discussion of ellipsis phenomena, whereby a perceived interpretation is fuller than would be expected based solely on the presence of linguistic forms. Natural language abounds in these apparently incomplete expressions, such as I laughed but Ed didn’t, in which the final portion of the sentence, the verb ‘laugh’, remains unpronounced but is still understood. The range of phenomena involved raise general and fundamental questions about the workings of grammar, but also constitute a treasure trove of fine-grained points of inter- and intralinguistic variation. The volume is divided into four parts. In the first, the authors examine the role that ellipsis plays and how it is analyzed in different theoretical frameworks and linguistic subdisciplines, such as HPSG, construction grammar, inquisitive semantics, and computational linguistics. Chapters in the second part highlight the usefulness of ellipsis as a diagnostic tool for other linguistic phenomena including movement and islands and codeswitching, while Part III focuses instead on the types of elliptical constructions found in natural language, such as sluicing, gapping, and null complement anaphora. Finally, the last part of the book contains case studies that investigate elliptical phenomena in a wide variety of languages, including Dutch, Japanese, Persian, and Finnish Sign Language.

    Abstract: Reference, the ability to refer to and pick out entities, is essential to human language and thought/cognition. The chapters in this volume attempt to provide a state of the art overview of this ability. The book is divided into two sections. The chapters in Part I, Foundations, are concerned with basic questions related to different types of referring expression and their interpretation. They address questions about the role of the speaker (including speaker intentions) and of the addressee, as well as the contribution of (the semantics of) the linguistic forms themselves, in establishing reference. They are also concerned with the nature of such concepts as definite and indefinite reference and specificity and the conditions under which reference may fail. The chapters in Part II, Implications and Applications, address questions about the acquisition of reference by children, and the processing of reference in the brain (neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics) as well as by machines, including robots (computational linguistics).

    Abstract: The Oxford Handbook of Taboo Words and Language defines taboo as a proscription of behaviour for a specifiable community of one or more persons at a specifiable time in specifiable contexts. What is in fact tabooed is the use of those words and language in certain contexts; in short, the taboo applies to instances of language behaviour. For behaviour to be proscribed it must be perceived as in some way harmful to an individual or their community but the degree of harm can fall anywhere on a scale from a breach of etiquette to out-and-out fatality. All tabooed behaviours are deprecated and they lead to social if not legal sanction. Taboos are described and the reasons and beliefs behind them are investigated.

    Abstract: Every language has a way of saying how one knows what one is talking about, and what one thinks about what one knows. In some languages, one always has to specify the information source on which it is based-whether the speaker saw the event, or heard it, or inferred it based on something seen or on common sense, or was told about it by someone else.
