    Abstract: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought
    Abstract: "Al vroeg in de achttiende eeuw omschreven Europese denkers het tijdvak waarin zij leefden als verlicht. Het besef onderdeel te zijn van een ontwikkelde, beschaafde en commerciële periode schiep een nieuwe verhouding tot het verleden. Veel geschiedschrijvers schreven een historisch verhaal van vooruitgang - van de klassieke oudheid via de barbaarse middeleeuwen naar het moderne Europese statensysteem - om deze verlichte eeuw te verklaren. Hoewel dit fungeerde als een gedeeld Europees verleden en gedeelde Europese identiteit, ontstonden er al gauw nationale varianten. Eleá de la Porte onderzoekt de achttiende-eeuwse Nederlandse verlichte verhalen vanuit dit internationale perspectief. In de Republiek botste het verhaal van Europese vooruitgang op een gelijktijdig debat over nationaal verval en een sterke traditie van humanistische geschiedschrijving. Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik, criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch) en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van onszelf te verbeteren. Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven, is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én het voorkomen van ongelijkheid. De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien. De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook nieuwe kennisvragen. Inmiddels dienen zich twee fundamentelere vragen aan. Allereerst lijkt het stelsel niet meer per definitie sociale zekerheid te bieden omdat het idee over wat zekerheid is, zelf aan verandering onderhevig is: inkomenscompensatie is niet per definitie de hoogste vorm van zekerheid. Uit vergelijkende studies blijkt dat sociaalinvesteringsbeleid vooralsnog weinig effect heeft gehad op de ontwikkeling van de Europese armoedecijfers. Een verklaring hiervoor lijkt te zijn dat in de meeste landen – mede door het optreden van de financiële crisis – de verschuivingen in de uitgaven van traditioneel naar activerend sociaal beleid betrekkelijk beperkt in omvang zijn. Echter, vanwege politiek-economische redenen en trends als verdergaande economische globalisering, is het goed denkbaar dat sociale investeringen in de toekomst een belangrijker plek krijgen in sociale stelsels

    Abstract: De ontwikkeling van de sociale zekerheid in de afgelopen eeuw vertoont het beeld van een grote golf: een snelle opgaande beweging na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, gevolgd door een halvering van de uitgaven sinds 1984. De neergaande beweging in de afgelopen dertig jaar was het gevolg van de financiële onhoudbaarheid van het stelsel, de verstorende werking op de arbeidsmarkt, de ongewenste morele gevolgen van te genereuze sociale zekerheid en veranderingen in preferenties van de burgers. Als gevolg van de ingrijpende hervormingen die zijn doorgevoerd, hebben deze argumenten voor de toekomst aanzienlijk aan kracht ingeboet. Toch is het aannemelijk dat het sociale stelsel nog verder zal worden geprivatiseerd, doordat de burgers hun vertrouwen in de overheid als verzekeraar hebben verloren en liever hun eigen buffers opbouwen. Er is echter ook een alternatief toekomstscenario denkbaar waarin de overheid weer een grotere rol bij de inkomensbescherming van burgers gaat spelen

Aan de hand van ervaringen van eenouder gezinnen (i.c. moeders) in de bijstand betogen we dat deze mismatch een gevolg is van de impliciete voorwaarden van de verzorgingsstaat. De (materiele) sociale zekerheid die de verzorgingsstaat biedt, is slechts toereikend bij een solide basis van emotionele en relationele veiligheid. Alleenstaande bijstandsmoeders (en waarschijnlijk ook andere multiprobleemgezinnen) ontberen deze. Daardoor komt de (materiële) zekerheid die de verzorgingsstaat biedt, niet tot zijn recht. We besluiten met voorstellen om de benodigde relationele en emotionele zekerheid in het stelsel een plaats te geven

Zekerheid en sparen worden onderdeel van financiële planning over levensloop. Dit stelt nieuwe eisen aan het stelsel van sociale zekerheid, met een spilfunctie voor de kapitaalgedekte aanvullende pensioenen. Met name is er behoefte aan grotere flexibiliteit en meer ruimte voor maatwerk. Daarbij passen ook modernere vormen van sturing van het individueel gedrag. Meer ‘zacht paternalisme’ door gerichte keuze-architectuur in plaats van het ouderwets ‘hard paternalisme’ van verplichte uniforme regelingen. Dit betekent niet dat alle sociale verzekeringen vervangen worden door sparen: voor grote individuele (‘idiosyncratische’) risico’s en voor risico’s laat in het leven – zoals ouderenzorg – blijft verzekeren essentieel

    Abstract: To what extent is it possible for a literary text to contribute to the ethical development of its reader? This book tries to provide readers with a nuanced answer to this question, as well as with methodological premises to bring to light the ethical effects of a literary text. The novels of the Dutch author Frans Kellendonk (1951-1990) offer insightful contexts and questions related to this issue. Kellendonk is one of the most controversial Dutch writers of the end of the twentieth century. Today, he is mainly considered as a kind of prophet that advocated a certain scepticism towards a multicultural society. Kellendonk’s novels systematically put into question one-way interpretations of their works. They invite readers to find other interpretations, putting into question the simplifying conceptual framework that has shaped the author’s posture until now. They also lay the foundations for an ethics of reading that relies on the very diegetic world to which the reader can adjust his/her own reading. This ethics is more specifically an invitation to recognize the undecidability that every reading entails

    Abstract: This book explores images of the house in Dutch-language poetry from the postwar period. On the one hand the archetypical notion of the house has always had an established place in poetry. It is connected to the meaning of house as a building, but even more so as an imaginative house or a home. On the other hand the house is a rich metaphorical concept that is often used for expressing poetical ideas. In a historical survey of modern Dutch-language poetry different images of the house are presented. The overview shows that the choice of certain metaphorical concepts is connected to literary and extra literary contexts, and to the poetical ideas of poets. Conceptual integration – blending theory – is used throughout this book as a theoretical frame. From this perspective poems are regarded as a complex blend, a network of connections which are constructed during the reading and interpreting processes. Finally, the book shows how metaphorical blends are integrated in concrete poems and which kind of house images result from this process

    Abstract: This third volume of Lage Landen Studies offers a glimpse of recent international and internationalizing trends in Dutch Studies. It presents a comparative view of the virtually synchronic dynamics of the translation, promotion and reception of contemporary Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in five Romance languages between 1996 and 2009. This interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on the crossroads of language, literature and culture, as well as on aspects of the sociologies of literature and translation, is combined with views from translation studies, comparative literature, and bibliology in order to build bridges between theory and practice. The first part is devoted to the seldom-heard perspective of the translator and dissects the circumstances in which works by Arnon Grunberg – and by his heteronym Marek van der Jagt – are translated, promoted and received in five Romance languages. The function and ‘visual translation’ of book covers are also analyzed. Notwithstanding the relative homogeneity of the languages, their cultural background and geographical location, remarkable differences come to light.     Abstract: A storm at sea, hanging cliffs, volcano eruptions at night, threatening thunderclouds over a desolate mountain landscape: all these phenomena incite both fear and pleasure, astonishment and fascination. We call them sublime, after the feeling of the sublime. In the eighteenth century the sublime became the exciting alternative to the beautiful. The concept has ancient roots, but branches out into French, British, German, and Dutch cultures. Stemming originally from rhetoric, in the course of the eighteenth century it became an aesthetic, philosophical and literary concept. In this study the history of the sublime is told for the first time in Dutch. This book focuses on Dutch contributions on the sublime, in the light of the international history of the concept of the sublime. From the earliest translations to the original ideas of Johannes Kinker and Willem Bilderdijk: the Dutch sublime reflects both the entwinement with the European Enlightenment and the specific nature of Dutch culture in the long eighteenth century
    Abstract: Een storm op zee, overhangende kliffen, nachtelijke vulkaanuitbarstingen, dreigende donderwolken boven een woest berglandschap: al deze verschijnselen boezemen tegelijk angst en genot, ontzetting en fascinatie in. We noemen ze subliem, naar het verheven gevoel dat ze oproepen. Het sublieme gold in de achttiende eeuw als het spannende alternatief voor het schone. Het begrip heeft antieke wortels, maar ook Franse, Engelse, Duitse, en Nederlandse vertakkingen. Oorspronkelijk een begrip uit de retorica groeide het in de achttiende eeuw uit tot een esthetisch, filosofisch en literair concept. In deze studie wordt voor het eerst de geschiedenis van het verhevene in het Nederlands verteld. Centraal in dit boek staan een aantal Nederlandse bijdragen over het verhevene, die hier worden gelezen in het kader van de internationale begripsgeschiedenis van het sublieme. Van de vroegste vertalingen tot de eigenzinnige ideeën van Johannes Kinker en Willem Bilderdijk: in het Nederlandse verhevene wordt zowel de verbondenheid met de Europese Verlichting als het bijzondere van de eigen cultuur in de lange achttiende eeuw weerspiegeld

    Abstract: Creëer een substantieel extra budget Geesteswetenschappen waarop faculteiten een beroep kunnen doen op basis van een overtuigend toekomstplan. Stel een regieorgaan in dat de voorstellen toetst. Versterk de kansen op tweede geldstroomonderzoek voor geesteswetenschappers. En ontwikkel een adequate kwaliteitsbeoordeling voor hun prestaties. Dat zijn de belangrijkste aanbevelingen uit het rapport van de commissie Nationaal Plan Toekomst Geesteswetenschappen onder voorzitterschap van Job Cohen. Hij heeft het eindrapport vanmorgen overhandigd aan minister Ronald Plasterk, die een jaar geleden de opdracht gaf voor het opstellen van dit advies. Op het eerste gezicht lijken de geesteswetenschappen er in Nederland goed voor te staan. Het aantal studenten groeit, het onderzoek is hoogwaardig en er is sprake van een groeiende maatschappelijke belangstelling voor de producten van het geesteswetenschappelijk onderzoek. Deze ogenschijnlijke bloei kan niet verhullen dat zich ernstige problemen voordoen die de toekomst van de geesteswetenschappen bedreigen. Zo kon afgelopen jaren ondanks de stijging van het aantal studenten niet of nauwelijks in extra personeel worden geïnvesteerd. Een sterke verslechtering van de stafstudentratio en toenemende druk op onderzoekstijd zijn het gevolg. Ook voor het opleiden van de toekomstige generatie wetenschappers ontbreekt het aan financiële ruimte. Gevolg is dat de pool van kandidaten om de huidige generatie wetenschappelijke staf op te volgen steeds kleiner wordt, wat op termijn de kwaliteit van het hele wetenschapsgebied bedreigt. De commissie stelt voor om een deskundig en gezaghebbend regieorgaan in te stel-len. Dat beheert een speciaal budget waarop de geesteswetenschappelijke faculteiten een beroep kunnen doen met een overtuigend toekomstplan. Dat plan moet de verschillende deelproblemen (zoals versnippering van het onderwijsaanbod, geringe maatschappelijke uitstraling, lage onderwijsrendementen, betere doorstroming van jong talent in vaste wetenschappelijke rangen etc.) stevig aanpakken.     Abstract: Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), dichter, toneelschrijver en romancier, behaalde wereldfaam met het toneelstuk Wachten op Godot', dat in 1953 in première ging.     Abstract: Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed being a test market for many ideas in the media. But over the last decade, progress has been severely hampered by lengthy discussions on the future structure of just one sector of media, namely public broadcasting via radio and television. The narrow approach results in a lot of paper, speeches and theories, but little in the way of definitive policy making. In a report to the government, published in February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy (WRR) argued for very different approaches to policy making. The recommendations are not only much broader than "broadcasting"; they tackle the challenges of making robust policy from new angles. Instead of trying to repair the old compass, the approach has been to find new instruments to help policymakers navigate the stormy and often confusing waters ahead. Perhaps the problem in the Netherlands is not accepting the new media, but rather accepting that the role "old" media has undergone a paradigm shift.     Abstract: Voor een gezonde democratie is een gevarieerd en toegankelijk media-aanbod van groot belang. Radio, televisie, kranten en tijdschriften spelen immers een belangrijke rol in de maatschappelijke informatievoorziening, het publieke debat, de cultuur, de vrijetijdsbesteding en de ontspanning. Het mediabeleid van de regering is er daarom op gericht een veelzijdig, kwalitatief hoogwaardig en onafhankelijk media-aanbod te garanderen, dat toegankelijk is voor alle bevolkingsgroepen waar ook in het land. De laatste jaren is het medialandschap echter sterk aan het veranderen: het internet rukt op, het onderscheid tussen verschillende media vervaagt en de consument bepaalt zijn keuze op een levendige market van vele verschillende aanbieders. in Focus op functies brengt de WRR advies uit aan de regering om daarmee de doelstellingen van het mediabeleid op een toekomstbestendige wijze op een lijn te brengen met de (verwachte) veranderingen in het medialandschap.     Abstract: Op basis van een dynamisch multi-sectormodel en een optimaliseringstechniek komt de raad tot de conclusie dat het technisch-economisch mogelijk is in de komende tien jaar de bestaande werkloosheid weg te werken en het groeiend arbeidsaanbod in te zetten. Een belangrijke voorwaarde is wel dat de overheid en de sociale partners meer risico's durven nemen. Het niveau van de investeringen moet worden verhoogd, inclusief investeringen ten behoeve van bescherming van het milieu. De export moet jaarlijks groeien met 5 à 6 procent. De raad pleit voor een terugkeer naar een structurele begrotingsnormering. Dit houdt in dat omvang, samenstelling en tekort van de collectieve sector worden beoordeeld in de context van de gehele economie
