Abstract: This book aims at exposing its readers to some of the most significant advances in assistive technologies. Assistive technologies develop devices to assist vulnerable people, including elderly people, people with cognitive disabilities such as memory problems or dementia, and people with functional disabilities such as those needing support in toileting, moving around, eating, bathing, dressing, grooming, and taking personal care. The ever-increasing life expectancy and world population, along with the emergence of new diseases and the regrettable continuation of armed conflicts, press for development and availability of assistive technologies that offer people in need the opportunity to live secure and controlled lives with more active participation in society and at a reduced assistive cost. This task can be accomplished only with more advanced devices than traditional-powered wheelchairs or eating/drinking devices, including prosthetics, exoskeletons, visual and hearing aids, cognitive aids, and devices enhanced with artificial intelligence. The book consists of an editorial note and an additional twelve (12) chapters, all of which have been written by authors who work on the corresponding chapter theme and are recognized for their significant research contributions. In more detail, the chapters in the book are organized into four parts, namely (i) Advances in Assistive Technologies in Healthcare, (ii) Advances in Assistive Technologies in Medical Diagnosis, (iii) Advances in Assistive Technologies in Mobility and Navigation, and (iv) Advances in Privacy and Explainability in Assistive Technologies. This research book is directed towards professors, researchers, scientists, engineers, and students in assistive technologies. It is also directed towards readers who come from other disciplines and is interested in becoming versed in some of the most recent assistive technologies. Abstract: This book aims at offering a unique collection of ideas and experiences mainly focusing on the main streams and merger of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) for a wide slice of the communication and networking community. In the era when the world is grappling with many unforeseen challenges, scientists and researchers are envisioning smart cyber systems that guarantee sustainable development for a better human life. The main contributors that destined to play a huge role in developing such systems, among others, are AI and IoT. While AI provides intelligence to machines and data by identifying patterns, developing predictions, and detecting anomalies, IoT performs as a nerve system by connecting a huge number of machines and capturing an enormous amount of data. AI-enabled IoT, therefore, redefines the way industries, businesses, and economies function with increased automation and efficiency and reduced human interaction and costs. This book is an attempt to publish innovative ideas, emerging trends, implementation experience, and use-cases pertaining to the merger of AI and IoT. The primary market of this book is centered around students, researchers, academicians, industrialists, entrepreneurs, and professionals working in electrical/computer engineering, IT, telecom/electronic engineering, and related fields. The secondary market of this book is related to individuals working in the fields such as finance, management, mathematics, physics, environment, mechatronics, and the automation industry.

Abstract: This book presents the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) automotive applications. It unites automobile with a leading technology i.e. augmented and virtual reality and uses the advantages of the latter to solve the problems faced by the former. The book highlights the reasons for the growing abundance and complexity in this sector. Virtual and augmented reality presents a powerful engineering tool that finds application in various engineering fields. It brings new possibilities that result is increasing of productivity and reliability of production, quality of products and processes. The book further illustrates the possible challenges in its applications and suggests ways to overcome them. The book includes nine chapters focusing on automobile collision avoidance, self-driving cars, autonomous vehicles, navigation systems, and many more applications. .

Abstract: Like many emerging markets, the Arab Republic of Egypt is keen to promote distributed solar, defined here as systems below 500 kilowatts, but has struggled to create conditions for growth in the sector. The aim of this paper is to identify policy actions to unlock the distributed solar market for on-grid and off-grid applications, using Egypt as a case study. The paper calculates the rate of return on investment for different distributed solar applications, identifies nonfinancial barriers to scaling up distributed solar, and derives policy implications. For on-grid applications, the analysis finds that neither net metering nor the feed-in tariff makes distributed solar financially attractive, despite recent reductions in electricity subsidies and adjustments of feed-in tariff levels in October 2016. For off-grid applications, the profitability of distributed solar depends highly on the local price of diesel: distributed solar is viable only in areas where diesel is not available at the official (subsidized) price. In addition, several nonfinancial barriers limit the scalability of the distributed solar market. These findings indicate that the distributed solar market in Egypt will remain a niche market in the next few years without strengthened government support. First, for on-grid applications, the net metering scheme should be kept in place until a bankable feed-in tariff has been established. Second, for off-grid applications, the government should explore interventions to unlock opportunities in the agriculture and tourism sectors. Third, the government should strengthen private-sector activity in the sector, including by addressing nonfinancial barriers, such as transaction costs and gaps in the availability of data, and by building capacity among users, suppliers, and financial institutions

Parallel Title: Azuela, Gabriela Elizondo Performance of Renewable Energy Auctions
Abstract: This paper considers the design and performance of auction mechanisms used to deploy renewable energy in three emerging economies: Brazil, China, and India. The analysis focuses on the countries' experience in various dimensions, including price reductions, bidding dynamics, coordination with transmission planning, risk allocation strategies, and the issue of domestic content. Several countries have turned to public competitive bidding as a mechanism for developing the renewable generation sector in recent years, with the number of countries implementing some sort of auction procedure rising from nine in 2009 to 36 by the end of 2011 and about 43 in 2013. In general, the use of auctions makes sense when the contracting authority expects a large volume of potentially suitable bids, so that the gains from competition can offset the costs of implementation. A study of the successes and failures of the particular auction design schemes described in this paper can be instrumental in informing future policy making
