Abstract: "In Semiotics of Rape, Rupal Oza follows the social life of rape in rural northwest India to reveal how rape is not only a violation of the body, but a language through which a range of issues-including caste and gender hierarchies, control over land and labor, and the shape of justice-are contested. Rather than focus on the laws governing rape, Oza closely examines rape charges to show how the victims and survivors of rape reclaim their autonomy by refusing to see themselves as defined entirely by the act of violation. Oza also shows how rape cases become arenas where bureaucrats, village council members, caste communities, and the police debate women's sexual subjectivities and how those varied understandings impact the status and reputations of individuals and groups. In this way, rape gains meaning beyond the level of the survivor and victim to create a social category. By tracing the shifting meanings of sexual violence and justice, Oza offers insights into the social significance of rape in India and beyond"--

Abstract: Introduction -- Conflict-related sexual violence against men : a global perspective -- Tek-gungu : wartime sexual violence in Northern Uganda -- 'I used to be a strong man, but now I am not' : gendered vulnerabilities and harms -- Exercising agency : survivors' support groups -- Justice, recognition, and reparations -- Towards a survivor-centric approach.
Abstract: "Although wartime sexual violence against men occurs more frequently than is commonly assumed, its dynamics are remarkably underexplored and male survivors' experiences also remain overlooked. This is poignant in Northern Uganda, where sexual violence against men during the early stages of the conflict was geographically widespread, yet now accounts of those incidents are not just silenced and neglected locally but also widely absent from analyses of the war. Based on rare empirical data, this book seeks to remedy this marginalization and to illuminate the seldom-heard voices of male sexual violence survivors in northern Uganda, bringing to light their experiences of gendered harms, agency, and justice"--

Abstract: This is a groundbreaking study of an important and neglected topic--the systematic use of rape as a strategic weapon of the genocidal anti-Jewish violence, known collectively as pogroms, that erupted in Ukraine in the period between 1917 and 1921, and in which at least 100,000 Jews died and undocumented numbers of Jewish women were raped. The book is based on the in-depth study of the scores of narratives of Jewish men and women who survived the pogrom violence, but were then all but forgotten for almost a century. This book deconstructs the motives of perpetrators, the experience and expression of trauma by the victimized community, and how the genocidal objectives of the pogrom perpetrators were achieved and maximized through the macabre carnival of violence

Abstract: In 1949 the photographer and co-founder of Magnum Photos, George Rodger, learned of the Nuba tribe while traveling in the Kordofan region of the Sudan. Remarkably, he was granted permission by the Sudanese government to take pictures of these striking people, who lived as their ancestors had centuries before. After publication in National Geographic magazine, these pictures--as well as Rodger's fascinating journal entries from the shoot--have not been available to the wider public. Now, Rodger's rare softly colored Kodachrome images are gathered in a sumptuous volume, and introduced in an essay by photographer Chris Steele-Perkins. Beautifully reproduced, Rodger's photographs emphasize the muted colors of the Sudanese landscape as well as the Nuba's penchant for vivid body paint, clothing, and jewelry. They are a superb example of early color photography, and a stunning celebration of a little-known tribe that lives in one of the world's harshest environments

Abstract: "A much-needed analysis of the role of the state, its mechanisms and structures in perpetuating, legitimizing and facilitating gender violence worldwide in the first decade and a half of the 21st century. This book documents the nature, extent and progress made in relation to gender-based violence since the advancements in women's rights that had their zenith in the 1990s, and focuses specifically on state participation in and interventions on gender violence. Gender Violence in Peace and War concentrates on gender violence in relation to state practices because, as the chapters clearly demonstrate, sexual victimization, torture, persecution, socioeconomic exclusion and domestic violence fall within the purview of the state and its proxies. Additionally, while gender, violence and the state are frequent and well-analyzed objects of study in social scientific and feminist literature, the full extent of this multilayered relation between all three has not been fully explored in recent social science literature and feminist scholarship in an interdisciplinary context"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: This briefs integrates and synthesizes an array of research about who helps others and under what conditions and discusses the implications of this research for a bystander intervention focused prevention agenda to reduce sexual and relationship violence in schools and communities. It combines an examination of bystander helping behavior in the specific context of sexual and relationship violence with social psychological research on bystander behavior outside that context in order to inform prevention efforts. This briefs is designed for researchers, practitioners, and students concerned about violence prevention and who are interesting in bystander intervention as a promising prevention strategy. Connections between research and practice are the foundation of this briefs. The briefs addresses the following questions: What is the promise of a bystander approach to violence prevention? Where does it fit within the spectrum of sexual and relationship violence prevention? How do we expand theoretical models of helping behavior to the unique context of interpersonal violence? How can we bring in research from other areas of health behavior change and developmental research on violence to inform a broader bystander action model? It provides a new synthesis and model of bystander interaction. It outlines a strategic plan for new research and next steps in prevention practices

Abstract: "The Trouble with Marriage is part of a new global feminist jurisprudence around marriage and violence that looks to law as strategy rather than solution. In this ethnography of family courts and other crime and mediation settings in India, Srimati Basu reevaluates Indian feminist theories of marriage, gender violence, and the role of the state. Basu argues that alternative dispute resolutions, originally designed to empower women in a less adversarial legal environment, have created new subjectivities but have also reinforced oppressive socioeconomic norms that leave women no better off, individually or collectively. This volume examines the extent to which feminist visions of divorce, rape, and domestic violence law in India empower women and finds, paradoxically, that these alternative ideas actually reinforce women's economic and social inequality"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: "All too often in conflict situations, rape is referred to as a 'weapon of war', a term presented as self-explanatory through its implied storyline of gender and warring. In this provocative but much-needed book, Eriksson Baaz and Stern challenge the dominant understandings of sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict settings. Reading with and against feminist analyses of the interconnections between gender, warring, violence and militarization, the authors address many of the thorny issues inherent in the arrival of sexual violence on the global security agenda. Based on original fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as research material from other conflict zones, Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War? challenges the recent prominence given to sexual violence, bravely highlighting various problems with isolating sexual violence from other violence in war. A much-anticipated book by two acknowledged experts in the field, on an issue that has become an increasingly important security, legal and gender topic."--Publisher's website

Abstract: Sexual violence is a particular brand of evil that women have endured-more than men-during armed conflicts, through the ages. It is a menace that has continued to challenge the conscience of humanity-especially in our times. At the international level, basic laws aimed at preventing it are not in short supply. What is needed is a more conscious determination to enforce existing laws. This book explores ways of doing just that; thereby shoring up international legal protection of women from sexual violence in armed conflicts

Abstract: Sexual harassment, date rape, and domestic violence dominate the headlines and have recently sparked scholarly debates about the nature of the sexes. Concurrently, the scientific community is conducting more research on the topics of sexual conflict and coercion today than at any other time in the history of the social sciences. Despite this attention, these issues are being addressed from two different perspectives which have been assumed to be essentially different: one is labeled "feminist," while the other is evolutionary and emphasize reproductive strategies in understanding conflict between the sexes. This book brings together leading experts from both sides of the debate in order to discover how each discipline can offer insights lacking in the order. The editors' overall goal is first to show how the feminist and evolutionary approaches, while appearing unrelated, are in fact complementary and, second, to provide an integration and synthesis. Indeed, several of the contributors to this unique volume consider themselves advocates of both approaches. As a stimulating presentation of the dynamics of sex, power, and conflict - and a pioneering rapprochement of the diverse tendencies within the scientific community - this book will attract a wide audience in both psychology and women's studies.
