Kurzfassung: Puškin Today highlights the remarkable variety and compass of a figure who by all accounts is absolutely central to Russian culture, even "Russianness" itself. A multifaceted writer whose experiments at the boundaries of genre have never been equaled, Alexander Puškin is, moreover, an ever-evolving cultural myth; his works have served as a safe haven in troubled times for the Russian intelligentsia for nearly two centuries

Kurzfassung: The purpose of this study is to review some of the techniques developed by Russian composers in the early part of the twentieth century, down to the active assertion of state control of the arts in the Soviet Union, which began in 1929. The study centers principally on music for the piano, with an emphasis on harmony and both tonal and nontonal structures

Kurzfassung: Although the Soviet Union's centrally planned economic system played a significant role in world economic growth and modernization, it ultimately failed to compete with market forms of economic organization. Despite unavailing efforts at reform, it has now been abandoned, as the republics of the former USSR move painfully toward the market. In The Failure of Soviet Economic Planning: System, Performance, Reform Robert W. Campbell, one of the most respected U.S. specialists on the economy of the former Soviet Union, probes the evolution, behavior, and fatal weaknesses of the Soviet administrative-command economy

These features account for the basic pattern and dynamics of Yugoslav politics to the present day

Kurzfassung: This book is concerned with the analysis of the theatrical event and all of the elements that make up a performance-the text, the actor, the space, the spectator, the social circumstances. Theatre should be the most approachable of the arts, but it is a complex phenomenon that has proven difficult to study. Here, an international group of scholars approaches theatre-viewed in its traditional guise as a physical enactment of a text before spectators-from a variety of directions and using different methodologies. While there is a general orientation toward semiotic analysis, historical, sociological, and anthropological approaches are represented as well. Conceived as an introduction to performance studies, Approaching Theatre provides both an overview of current theory as well as new tools for analyzing performances. Included are case studies of productions by Peter Brook, Antoine Vitez, Pina Bausch, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. These studies suggest how the range of theoretical approaches offered in this book might be profitably applied to specific studies of theatrical performance

Kurzfassung: Ranging over the broad spectrum of contemporary literary and film theory, Breaking the Frame explores the different approaches to cinematic art that are offered by cognitive psychology, feminist theory, aesthetics, and psychoanalysis. In this study Inez Hedges looks closely at films that challenge accepted norms in both form and content. The films discussed here, including Zazie, La Nuit de Varennes, and E.T., break out of conventional frames, upsetting our expectations about how films should look (the film frame) as well as how experience is usually organized by cine- matic works of art (the psychological or cognitive frame). Hedges focuses on two primary areas: the way that the structure of film texts guides the interpretations of the spectator (hermeneutics) and the way that films reflect social models (representation). Within the hermeneutic approach, the author relates the unconventional use of film language in cinematic works of the 1960s and 1970s not only to the recent novels of Beckett and Queneau and to the French nouveau roman but also to one of the founding texts of Western literature, the Oedipus Rex of Sophocles. The discussion of representation exam- ines the social ascendancy of cinematic narrative in modern times in the light of the philosophical insights of Michel Foucault and Harold Bloom. Finally, contemporary feminist and psychoanalytic theories are brought to bear on cinematic representations of gender. Breaking the Frame will be of interest not only to scholars and students of film and literature but also to today's "filmliterate" public who enjoy exploring the theoretical and philosophical implications of cinematic works

Kurzfassung: Signs Becoming Signs evinces a broad, transdisciplinary perspective based on the thinking of Charles Sanders Peirce. In an effort to account for our knowledge of a universe open to an infinity of interpretations, the author dissolves many of the age-old dichotomies of Western thought into complementarities, which are qualified by a pair of Peirce's key concepts, vagueness and generality. These two terms are placed within the contemporary context of the abstract disciplines (Zeno's paradoxes, the mathematical continuum, G. Spencer-Brown's laws of form, Godel's proof), physics (relativity, quantum theory, Susan Petrilli teaches in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature at the Institute of the Philosophy of Language at the University of Bari. Bohm' s interconnectedness, Wheeler's participatory universe, Prigogine' s dissipative structures), biology (Maturana and Varel's autonomous living systems, Schrodinger's oneness of consciousness), and finally social psychology (Deleuze and Guattari's schizoanalysis)

Kurzfassung: The purpose of this book is to tell the story of the emergency and evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and the evolution of the new Soviet cooperatives, and their experiences during the first four years of their existence. What is shown is that, in spite of restrictions placed on their activity, they developed extremely rapidly. It became obvious that there was a reserve of entrepreneurial talents ready to be liberated. What developed, however, over the four-year period 1987-1990 was not private enterprise in the full Western sense of the term; not all of the cooperatives were free-standing, independent organizations. On the contrary, what developed were also forms that combined the state and private sectors in a variety of ways

Kurzfassung: Signs are the basis of all communication. Semiotics-the study of signs-has increasingly become an area of intellectual inquiry, and the word itself is now even known to the general public, thanks to the popularity ofnovels by David Lodge and the fame of Umberto Eco. No one has done more to advance the study of signs than Thomas A. Sebeok. In countless books and articles, he has written in a fascinating and erudite manner about almost every conceivable type of sign activity. This volume gathers some of his most accessibie essays, all dealing with fundamental problems of contemporary semiotics, or what Locke and Peirce, following medieval tradition, called the Doctrine of Signs. The first chapter constitutes an overview. Successive chapters consider the special relationships of semiotics to communication, linguistics, and the marketplace. Sebeok also discusses the evolution of semiosis and the natural history of language as a modeling system and superstructural modeling systems in a semiotic framework. The notion of "animal" is looked at from both a biological and a semiotic perspective, and the Clever Hans phenomenon is restudied in a historical context. Also examined are three important semiotic categories-the index, the fetish, and the second self. Sebeok concludes with some speculations about the future of semiotics and semiosis

Kurzfassung: In a single volume, Alexandra Orlova has assembled the most complete and up-to-date collection of memoirs by contemporaries of the Russian composer Modest Petrovich Musorgsky (1839-1881). These thirty-six reminiscences were written by well- known figures of the Russian musical scene at the time (including the composers Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Balakirev; the critics Vladimir Stasov and Mikhail Ivanov; and several performing musicians) as well as by little-known people who were privileged to have met the composer. A well-defined image of Musorgsky emerges from the various accounts: a small, delicate-looking man, immaculately dressed, always a welcome guest at fashionable homes; and, unfortunately, an alcoholic. Skillful as an accompanist and improviser at the piano, Musorgsky was exceedingly generous with his time and talent as a performer at concerts for the benefit of students. We see him among his musical colleagues, the so-called Balakirev circle, trying out their latest compositions for one another at social gatherings. Some of the most poignant memoirs recount emotion-filled visits with Musorgsky in the hospital during his last illness. Most of the memoirists are truthful, objective, and loving. Their accounts, coupled with Orlova' s copious notes, provide a valuable insight into Musorgsky's life and personality

Kurzfassung: Examining the constitutive role of language and narration in key areas of human experience, Narrative and the Self articulates a view of the self as the implied subject of narrative utterances. Anthony Paul Kerby draws on the diverse insights of recent work in philosophy, literary theory, and psychology to synthesize a coherent and provocative view of narrative identity and selfhood. Invoking the writings of Benveniste, Ricoeur, Merleau-Ponty, Lacan, Taylor, and other theorists, he argues that language and narration play a central role in key aspects of human experience such as emotion, values, recollection, and sense of history. Fundamental to Kerby's exposition is a defense of the quasi-narrative nature of our every- day experience. Kerby delineates a convincing narrative model of the self and offers a valuable overview of contemporary philosophical issues surrounding the place and role of narrative in human experience

Kurzfassung: The Semiotics of French Gestures is an important contribution in the field of semiotics, described on the original 1990 front cover flap text as follows: "Everyone gestures while speaking, in a specific and generally unconscious manner. What are the functions of gestures? What relationship do they have to speech? How do gestures work to create meaning? In this valuable book, Genevieve Calbris undertakes to answer those questions. Based on the author's own extensive experimental research, The Semiotics of French Gestures presents a systematic description and a detailed semiotic analysis of French gestures. The book aims to establish a structural semantics of the set of expressive gestures and facial expressions that accompany or replace spoken language

Kurzfassung: What happens when "thinking" no longer secures a rational foundation for knowledge and "acting" no longer means conforming one's daily enterprises, public and private, to that foundation? In his brilliant deconstructionist analysis Reiner Schürmann provides a comprehensive interpretation of Heidegger's thinking from the perspective of this question. Focusing on the relationship between theory and practice in an era in which metaphysical rationality has come to an end, Schürmann explicates an economy of presencing in which thinking can no longer be called upon to legitimize praxis by measuring it against some enduring principle or archē. Thinking and acting, he concludes, can then become an-archic

Kurzfassung: The postmodern response to the century-old crisis of classical discourse (which called into question the possibility of a fixed, objective, and absolute knowledge) has been to declare the death of the subject, and the end or absence of meaning. The Potential of Modern Discourse seeks to recover for contemporary discourse an alternative possibility by returning to the modernist project of linking ethics, politics, and the discourse of knowledge. In the multiple, ironic discourses of Robert Musil, the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce, and the physics of Werner Heisenberg, Marike Finlay finds the basis for a new discourse of knowledge. In her pragmatic, consensualmodel, meaning and truth are not objectively or unilaterally established, but rather "triadically" co-constructed as realtionship among "object," "representamen" (or "sign"), and "interpretant" (the terms are Peirce's), and this triadic realtionship is constantly shifting through time and space. By approaching Musil's The Man without Qualities as discourse, Finlay finds in it a re-presentation of the theory of knowledge implicit in the Peircean triadicity and Heisenber's philosophy of physics. Her reading constitutes one of the first attempts to apply Peircean semiotics to a literary work. in Musil's modernist response to the crisis of representation, Finlway discovers an alternative to the postmodernist complete deconstruction of sense

Kurzfassung: Memory, reminiscence, and writing have been a central issue throughout the history of Western philosophy. Socrates' wax tablet of the soul, Aristotle's signet ring impressing memories in the mind, Descartes' ceraceous pineal gland, Hobbes' and Locke's tabula rasa, Freud's "mystic writing pad" of the psyche, and the contemporary neurophysiologist's computer storage depot-all are variations on the theme of how we remember. Identifying typography, iconography, and engrammatology as the basic characteristics of these models, in Part One David Farrell Krell traces the history of memory from Plato to the present. Turning in Part Two to the deconstruction of the metaphysics of presence by Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Derrida, Krell finds that the traditional models of memory and reminiscence, which promised to recollect and restore the past to full presence, have broken down. Emerging from their writings, he concludes, is a new and more modest appreciation of memory as being always on the verge of a never present past. Readers in philosophy, cognitive psychology, and literary theory will be challenged by this provocative book

Kurzfassung: Nietzsche and Heidegger were both lovers of language, and author Jean Graybeal argues that their writing styles demonstrate a relationship with the feminine dimension of language. Using as a framework the theories of Julia Kristeva concerning the "symbolic" and "semiotic" dispositions in language, Graybeal reads Nietzsche and Heidegger as writers and thinkers whose experimentation with language is directly relevant both to their quests for nonmetaphysical ways of thinking and to the feminist project of moving beyond male dominance. The chapters on Nietzsche discuss portions of The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, and Ecce Homo with the question of woman in the forefront of the analysis. The chapters on Heidegger deal, first, with Being and Time, describing the ways in which Heidegger evokes the feminine and semiotic dimensions in language. Finally, eight of Heidegger's later essays are read with attention to feminine, maternal, and erotic imagery. Uniquely influential in contemporary philosophy, Nietzsche's and Heidegger's attempts to overcome metaphysics may also contribute to the task of moving beyond androcentric thinking. Graybeal' s sensitive critical study enables readers of philosophy, theology, and criticism to imagine how the work of Nietzsche and Heidegger is relevant to our understandings of what it is to be women and men

Kurzfassung: Charles E. Scott's challenging book advances the broad claim that ethics as a way of judging and thinking has come into question as philosophers have confronted suffering and conflicts that arise from our traditional systems of value. The question of ethics arises from nineteenth-century European thought and finds its most effective early expression in Nietzsche's writings. The book shows how the self-overcoming movement of Nietzsche's thought recoils on his own values and, in the context of the ascetic ideal, prevents the formation of a normative ethics. After tracing a movement in Foucault's work on the formation of ethical subjectivity similar to that found in Nietzsche's thought, Scott turns to Heidegger, in whose work the question of ethics plays a prominent role but lapses in Heidegger's Rector's Address of 1933. Why did this lapse take place and what were its consequences? Scott shows that Nietzsche's ascetic ideal continued to play a role in Heidegger's thought, mitigating the constructive possibilities of the question of ethics, a question that Heidegger at times brings to bear with exceptional force

Kurzfassung: The title of this book takes as its point of reference those early, primitive films in which mostly men, but occasionally women, peek through keyholes, offering bold demonstrations of the voyeuristic pleasure that has been central to virtually every contemporary theory of cinema. When we imagine a "woman" and a "keyhole," it is usually a woman on the other side of the keyhole, as the proverbial object of the look, that comes to mind. In this work the author is not necessarily reversing the conventional image, but rather asking what happens when women are situated on both sides of the keyhole. The question is not only who or what is on either side of the keyhole, but also what lies between them, what constitutes the threshold that makes representation possible. In all of the films discussed, the threshold between subject and object, between inside and outside, between virtually all opposing pairs, is a central figure for the reinvention of cinematic narrative. Films discussed include Helke Sander's Redupers, Julie Dash's Illusions, Patricia Rozema's I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, Yvonne Rainer's The Man Who Envied Women, Chantal Akerman's Je tu il elle, Ulrike Ottinger's Ticket of No Return, Anne Severson's Near the Big Chakra, Suzan Pitt's Asparagus, Germaine Dulac's The Smiling Madame Beudet, Agnes Varda's Cleo from 5 to 7, Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, Trin T. Minh-ha's Reassem-blage, Laleen Jayamanne's A Song of Ceylon, and the films of Dorothy Arzner

Kurzfassung: The Elusive Covenant takes a fresh look at the book of Genesis, at the foundational text of the Hebrew bible. Uniting the studies of literary form, sign theory, and kinship structures, Terry J. Prewitt demonstrates the close relationship between the unfolding genealogies and the narrative structures of Genesis. The links between kinship structure and narrative structure, fashioned from diverse written and oral sources, underscore the sense of Genesis as a political document, created by a particular priesthood. The ingenious and informed method of The Elusive Covenant breaks from traditional biblical analysis. Prewitt's "whole-text" perspective and his search for a unified structure in Genesis results in innovative character treatments and a rich appreciation of the scriptural integration of history, social depiction, and spatial representation. At the same time, the author remains cognizant of source-critical and form-critical approaches. Overall, Prewitt's detailed analyses and broad interpretation establish important new connections between Genesis and other biblical scriptures (Exodus, Numbers, Joshua, and so on) and lead to conclusions of broad significance for those in the fields of anthropology, religion, and semiotics

Kurzfassung: The Ballad Matrix examines the William Motherwell ballad collection, one of the largest collections of songs gathered during the golden age of ballad collecting in Scotland (1780 to 1830). The collected repertoire of Agnes Lyle of Kilbarchan, Motherwell's most prolific informant, consists of twenty-two full texts, some with tunes, and a number of additional fragments. Revealing how Agnes Lyle relied on the narrative techniques of ballad singing, these songs also show how she achieved expression of personal values and concerns even though her medium, the ballad, was a highly traditional one. When in her ballads Agnes Lyle expressed traditional attitudes toward luxury, sexuality, or death, her expression was uniquely vehement. Furthermore, she was able to express radical social and political attitudes, which are not traditional in balladry. Study of Agnes Lyle's ballads thus allows a better understanding of what it meant for a traditional singer to "learn" a ballad and to what extent she was free to make the song her own

Kurzfassung: Reinhardt Grossmann holds that a realistic ontology in regard to perceptual, physical, and mathematical objects can be combined with an empiricistic theory of knowledge. In the first part of the book he shows that the traditional distinction between primary and secondary qualities leads to idealism, while the common Cartesian conception of knowledge by way of ideas leads to skepticism. In an effort to avoid these twin scourges of modem philosophy, the author argues for the existence of ordinary perceptual objects and explains how we know these objects directly through simple acts of perception. The second part of the book is concerned with the way in which we know what is in our minds. Grossmann maintains that this kind of knowledge is just as fallible as perception. In the third part the author concludes that logic, arithmetic, and set theory concern matters of fact and that we discover these facts through empirical knowledge

Kurzfassung: Stylistics is at a crossroad, according to Timothy Austin. It must find a way of bridging the chasm that separates it from deconstructionism and a means of restoring the faith of disillusioned stylists, like Stanley Fish and his followers, in its precepts. Offering a new, comprehensive, and clearly articulated theory of stylistics, Language Crafted is a first-and giant-step toward the goal of the revitalization of stylistics. Austin sets out the standards that a general theory of stylistics must meet. It must delimit its range of phenomena; it should offer a well-defined theoretical model, complete with theoretical categories and a description of the ways those categories relate to one another; it must evaluate the capacity of the model to analyze data in an approp- riate and elegant way; and it should examine the implications of its conclusions for associated fields. Using these standards, Austin outlines a linguistic theory of poetic syntax, elaborating on its provisions and extending its exemplifications to cover a broad spectrum of authors and texts. Austin's refreshing approach to poetic syntax offers great hope for a positive and productive future for the discipline of stylistics

Kurzfassung: In the early 1960s, searching for a fresh style and a new way of bringing their words to the Soviet public, a number of Russian poets began singing their verse to their own solo accompaniment on the traditional seven-stringed guitar. At about the same time, tape recorders became widely available in the USSR. Privately recorded and circulated on tape-a process called magnitizdat-guitar poetry quickly became the most popular form of dissident culture in the post-Stalin period. The guitar poets and their songs are known and loved throughout the USSR. Songs to Seven Strings is the first book in any language about this unusual literary genre. Smith places guitar poetry within the context of official "mass song"; "middle ground" songs, where official and unofficial cultures overlap; and the strong underground traditions of the gypsy song, cruel romance, and criminal song

Kurzfassung: Breaking away from the traditional "neo-Aristotelian" view of metaphor. Liselotte Gumpel's ambitious study offers a new "non-Aristotelian" approach based on the phenomenological semantica of Roman Ingarden and the semiotics of Charles S. Peirce. The author seeks to grasp the meaning of metaphor throughan exhaustiveexploration of meaning in language, from its acquisition by young speakers to its repeated origination in sound when spoken and in the visual sign when written. She identifies the fundamental semantic operations that differentiate literal from literary use of language. Next, metaphor is examined in all of its semantic idiosyncrasies. Gumpel's theory culminates in the development of a functional or structural metaphor that can neither dissapear nor "die." Applying the theory, Gumpel presents several textual analyses, relating the categories of argument, discent, and theme to the sue of metaphor by Brecht, Dickinson, and Celan. A final section provides an incisive critique of theories of metaphor from Aristotle to the present. An important intellectual accomplishment, Metaphor Reexamined yields original insights and supplies a mine of information for scholars in the philosophy of language, literary theory, semiotics, and linguistics

Werner Marx's welcome reassessment provides an appreciation of Schelling's unique thought and its relevance for present-day philosophical issues. Kurzfassung: Radical Humanism gives English-language readers the opportunity to expand their acquaintance with one of the most penetrating intellects of the postwar era. Philosopher, novelist, activist, and cultural, literary, and political critic, Jean Amery (1912-78) was a man of passionate concerns and interests. The astonishing range of his thought is admirably represented in the twelve essays collected here for the first time. Drawing from Amery's works covering the period 1967-78, Sidney and Stella Rosenfeld have chosen essays that fall into the broad categories of autobiography; reflections on Judaism; history and politics; and examinations of other writer-philosophers. Each of the pieces demonstrates Amery's remarkable ability to discern the very essence of any subject to which he applies himself, be it a political trend, a historic event or movement, an epoch, a life, or a philosophy. Jean Amery was not only a brilliant thinker but a master stylist. All the strengths of his incomparable writing are preserved in the Rosenfelds' outstanding translation, which readers will find provocative, illuminating, and-always-powerful

Kurzfassung: While many works on Kant's theory of knowledge place primary emphasis on assessing the validity of Kant's arguments, Richard E. Aquila aims first at clarifying the meaning of basic claims and concepts as Kant himself understood them. Representational Mind offers an interpretation of some of the most fundamental epistemological distinctions that Kant drew: between matter and form, intuition and concept, and things in themselves and appearances. Aquila's analysis centers on a theory of consciousness as the conceptual determination of intentional objects, the structure of which is grounded in forms of intuition. This approach, which distinguishes between concepts as mere predicates of judgments and as representations that phenomenologically inform intuitions, leads to a fuller grasp of the role of conceptualization in thinking. Shedding new light on the meaning of Kant's Transcendental Aesthetic, Aquila also gives extended treatment to imag- ination and schematism. The concluding chapter is devoted to the problem of self- awareness and the flow of time . An important contribution to the dialogue between phenomenological and analytical perspectives, Representational Mind will be of interest to scholars and students concerned with the history of modern philosophy and with philosophical problems involving the nature of mind and the intentionality of consciousness

Kurzfassung: The title piece of this collection was an immediate sensation when it was published in China in September 1979. An outstanding example of "reportage," or fictionalized social analysis, "People or Monsters?" is the story of the corruption of an entire commune in a small county in the remote Heilongjiang Province of northeastern China. . . . While many in China were scandalized by Liu's expose, many more saw in it a microcosm of Chinese society. Liu Binyan's lifelong dedication to truth and truth alone has rendered his career-which began in 1951 with a reporting position on the Party newspaper in Beijing-particularly vulnerable to the ever-shifting political tides of Communist China. Condemned to silence in 1958, during the Anti-Rightist campaign subsequent to the famous Hundred Flowers Movement, Liu was finally "rehabilitated" twenty-one years later, after the fall of the Gang of Four. The courageous honesty of "People or Monsters?" infuses all the pieces included in this collection

The degree to wich this dictum has been followed in modern Russian music is scrupulously recorded in the enlarged edition of Music and Musical Life in Soviet Russia. It contains Boris Schwarz' frank comentary on Soviet music, composers, concerts, competitions, and musical conditions in the Soviet Union. But the book as a whole is more than a musical history. It encompasses the growth of Soviet cultural life-not only composition and performane, but also ballet and opera, educational institutions and curricula, books and journals on music, and musical "politics."

In their place, he proposes a new set of nineteen articulatory primes based on a priori semiotic principles that establish a distinctive value or markedness of a particular sound quality or articulatory gesture . He bolsters his new theory by testing the primes with examples from the phonemes of twenty-three largely unrelated languages

Kurzfassung: With The Sense of Grammar, Peircean studies take a giant step forward, moving from a preoccupation with textual exegesis into the battleground of linguistic analysis. Working along the lines suggested by Peirce's theory of signs, as interpreted within the context of the philosopher's entire oeuvre, Michael Shapiro proposes a major reorientation of linguistic theory and a shift in the ultimate goals of the study of language structure. Part One provides a theoretical dissection of Peirce's semeiotic and evaluates its importance to structural linguistics. In it Shapiro grapples with the main differences between the theory of signs as Peirce held it before and after 1906. He then applies Peirce's semeiotic to the development of a new theory of grammar, which he tests in Part Two. Drawing examples primarily from the Russian language, Shapiro demonstrates how Peircean semeiotics engages the actual problems of linguistic structure subtended by real data and resolves them in the areas of phonology, morphophonemics, and morphology and semantics

Kurzfassung: If we are to understand Marx's thought, argues French philosopher Michel Henry, we must cast aside Marxism. In his original and richly detailed study of Marx's philosophy, Henry emphasizes the importance of approaching Marx's writings directly, rather than through the intermediary of subsequent interpretations, which often have been politically motivated. In contrast to the usual depiction of Marxian thought as an economically oriented analysis of social reality, Henry contends that in Marx's theory philosophy is primary. Therefore, Marx's writings must properly be viewed-and judged-within the context of the modern philosophical tradition . Marx's basic concern, Henry demonstrates, is with the nature of human being, the real conditions of human individuality. Central to Henry's reading of Marx, and elaborated here with unprecedented thoroughness, is the theory of praxis, a conception of the individual not as a thinking being, in the Cartesian tradition, but as a laboring being, a producer and consumer situated in a concrete social world. This novel and provocative contribution to the current debate about the nature and meaning of Marx's thought is essential for students of philosophy, Marxism, and political theory. Kathleen McLaughlin's excellent translation of Henry's abridgement of his two-volume work preserves the power and freshness of the French original

Kurzfassung: The elusive study of language change deals with discernible realia, such as sounds or structured groups of sounds, or words with their intra- and interrelationships. But these empirial data are constantly changing, and even interpreting them may be influenced by new linguistic circumstances. Description of language change has the advantage of hard evidence, but uncovering the reasons behind a set of language data is not a secure task. Language Change investigates the many facets of human activity that bear on this complex field. It relies on the polar areas of phonology, with its immediate alliance to physiology and physics, and semantics, with its penetration into the meaning of the world at large. Irmengard Rauch and Gerald F. Carr have organized teh volume in four sections-Contemporary Change, Historical Change, Linguists on Language Change, and Strata and Language Change-with almost half the chapters offering contemporary data. The distinguished contributors are Barbara Greim, Wayne Harbert, Henry and Renee KahaneI, Ilse Lehist, Winfred P. Lehmann, David Lightfoot, Yakov Malkiel, Raven McDavid Jr., Els Oksaar, Edgar Polome, Irmengard Rauch, and Frans VanCoetsem. Their range of topics reflects the kaleidoscopic essence of language change itself and will be of falue not only to linguists and semioticians but to historians, sociologists, philosophers, and anthropologists as well

Kurzfassung: The literature of the People's Republic of China became livelier and more varied during the "thaw" of 1979-80 than at any other time since the revolution. Perry Link, who lived in China during that period, has assembled the most representative examples, as well as those of most interest to Western readers, of "stubborn weeds"-the writing that would not die in spite of the pressures of the Cultural Revolution. The volume indicates fiction, drama, poetry, and such popular performing arts as comedians' dialogues and clappertales. The writers range from the prize-winning JiangZilong, to the controversial Bai Hua, to university students who wrote under pseudonymns in unofficial publications. In addition to exposing the injustices of the Cultural Revolution, the writers touch on previously heretical topics such as homosexuality, poverty, and the corruption of the regime. Perry Link's informative introductions trace the byzantine twists and turns in contemporary China and place them in a societal context. Because of its rich reflection of Chinese realities, Stubborn Weeds will interest sociologists and political scientists as well as literary scholars and general readers, who will welcome these authentic views

Kurzfassung: What do actors accomplish when they play characters on stage? Bruce Wilshire contends that through deliberate mimetic involvement, actors attempt to display how we are already mimetically involved with others offstage-bound up with them and authorized by them through imitation. To illustrate his argument that theatre is life-like , Wilshire provides examples from Oedipus Rex, Hamlet, Waiting for Godot, and the work of the avant-garde Polish director Jerzy Grotowski, among others. Wilshire then reverses his focus to show that life is theatre-like. The book's final section includes a thoughtful critique of current theories of social role playing. Wilshire affirms that acting is more than just role playing; it is the process of creating the self. Throughout, he makes use of a phenomenological methodology to establish theatre as the art of imitation that reveals imitation. Role Playing and Identity is an imaginative and broad-ranging reflection on the nature of the human condition that will be admired by social scientists and philosophers as well as by students of the theatre and literary scholars

Kurzfassung: Researchers and students of body movement and nonverbal communication will find this annotated bibliography an indispensable guide to the literature on the subject that has been produced over the last decade. The editors' objective was not so much to evaluate works as to give readers enough information to determine if a specific text is relevant to their interests. The bibliography includes works published in six languages that are directly concerned with the psychology or anthropology of body movement. Articles or books from areas such as dance therapy, motor learning, psycholinguistics, ethology, and physical education are included only if they deal in some way with behavioral aspects of movement per se and if they are focused clearly on body language-particularly research in body language as opposed to clinical or training program reports. The bibliography reveals that in the 1970s researchers applied more rigorous methods of assessment, sampling, manipulation, and statistical analysis to the study of nonverbal behavior. Body Movement and Nonverbal Communication will stimulate interest and further research in an area that has produced some exciting discoveries about human behavior

Kurzfassung: A critical interpretation and evaluation of Chinese poetry for English-speaking readers , The Interlingual Critic is a sophisticated exploration of the poetic experience and the nature of translation and criticism. The book is an exercise in comparative poetics that contains elements of autobiography, the phenomenology of reading, the theory of translation, poetics, and hermeneutics, as well as practical criticism. Liu delineates a conceptual framework in which any theory of literature or poetics can be analyzed. This framework is based on the interrelations between world, author, work, and reader, and may be illustrated by a tetradic circle, which is repeated in the process of interpretation, with "critic " replacing "author." Liu goes on to discuss problems involved in reading, translating, interpreting, and evaluating Chinese poetry in an interlingual context. The theoretical discussion is followed by an exercise in practical criticism, in which examples of Chinese poetry are analyzed in terms of time-space-self interrelations, with some comparisons to Western poems. The Interlingual Critic represents a cogent and concise synthesis of Chinese and Western theories of literature that will interest critics and students of other national literatures as well as specialists in Chinese poetry

Kurzfassung: A sociologist-anthropologist and a literary critic bring their complementary perspectives to bear on a critique of modern culture. They point to the academy's domination by a rationalist, liberal tradition as the locus of its decline in the post-modern era. A holistic, semiotic approach is offered as a vital and positive alternative. The book builds and expands on the authors' modified Saussurian model for the analysis of culture presented in the opening section. Part Two explores the implications of the general model for the social sciences and includes a discussion of Marx and Freud after semiotics; Part Three addresses literary and cultural criticism. The penultimate chapter, "On the Discriminations of Signs," reviews the recent historical evolution of intellectual schools of thought, from phenomenology through existentialism, structuralism, post-structuralism, and semiotics. It regards this evolution from the standpoint of the successive transformations of our understanding of "the sign." The book concludes with a critique of counterrevolutionary tendencies that have recently surfaced within semiotics. The Time of the Sign is an invigorating and probing work, with many acute insights into the development and analysis of cultural forms

Kurzfassung: Semiotics, the study of the function of signs, can seem bewildering to the uninitiated. James H. Bunn's dimensional approach makes semiotics accessible as no previous work has succeeded in doing. The book is organized to correspond with the several Euclidean dimensions: it explores three-dimensional instruments as they exist "in the round"; the relationship between pictorial images and a two- dimensional plane, as in maps and paintings; abstract signs, such as mathematical figures and musical notes that are strung together in one-dimensional series; and spatio-temporal (four-dimensional) models that are equated with whole systems. Bunn roams freely in a variety of fields-literature, history, mythology, anthropology, technology. The Dimensionality of Signs, Tools, and Models is a stimulating guide for the general reader, and an important breakthrough for those special readers interested in the philosophy of communication

Kurzfassung: The problems, struggles, and triumphs of twentieth-century Chinese women are the subject of the nineteen short stories of this anthology. Spanning over fifty years of Chinese history, these works reflect a period of tumultuous upheaval, national division, and radical social change. The contemporary writers represented, both the prominent and the little known, come from the People's Republic of China and from Taiwan; a few are immigrants to the United States. All the stories focus on the personal and social aspects of women's lives, without imposing solutions to the negative situations exposed. Those stories written in the PRC (where the Communist regime's control over literature has been absolute) are perhaps an exception to the rule, since they do not so much depict reality as hold up for emulation a model of ideal behavior

Kurzfassung: All aspects of human life are perceived and organized through myths and systems of myth. Language is a similarly vital function of our existence. Myth and Language explores the less universally accepted supposition that, particularly for the realm of literature, these two domains are necessarily interrelated. Moreover, this relationship is shown to be crucial to an understanding of the broader roles of literature in society. Unlike previous studies of this symbiosis, which have tended to neglect the importance of language, Myth and Language fully considers the influence of social context on the nature of literary language. Albert Cook begins his investigation into the relationship of myth and language with a critique of the work of Levi-Strauss, showing the usefulness of his binary procedures and sketching a typology of cultural phases, with particular attention to literary forms. Another section traces the redefinition of the relationship of myth and language from the oral Greek culture of Homer to the development of the discrete forms of lyric poetry, philosophy, and historiography. A final section examines the necessary reliance of elementary literary forms-proverb, riddle, parable, metaphor-on the translation of mythic concerns into language. Myth and Language is a cogent argument for the dependence of literary expression on mythic formulations

Kurzfassung: Nowhere in the art song repertoire dowes one find a more felicitous union than in the 200 or so mélodies of Fauré, Chausson, Duparc, and Debussy. These four composers brought to the magnificent world of their contemporaries—Verlaine, Gautier, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Leconte de Lisle, and others—the delicacy, sensitivity, and voluptuousness that characterize French music from 1865 to 1914. Song by song, this comprehensive study addresses each composer's complete works for solo, voice, and piano. Errors in popular published editions are pointed out and corrected. The full French text is given, followed by Barbara Meister's translation—in many cases, the first English version ever published. These exquisite renderings (not intended to substitute for the French lyrics in performance) vividly convey the sense and mood of the originals. Here the singer will find guidance on interpretation and pronunciation; the accompanist will profit from harmonic analyses intended to further genuine partnership with the vocalist; and the listener will gain a fuller satisfaction from learing how various works fit into their historical and aesthetic context, and in the lives of the poets and composers

Kurzfassung: Although Spain has had a long tradition of keyboard music, A History of Spanish Piano Music is the first study of that rich heritage. Linton E. Powell surveys the lives and works of over 150 composers from the eighteenth century to the present and discusses the relevant schools of composition, the regional styles, and the effects of social and political developments on the music of Spain. The first chapter deals with Spanish piano music from 1740 to 1840, with special attention to the first works for which the fuerte piano was designated, the earlier role of the organ, and the far-reaching influence of Scarlatti. Succeeding chapters chronicle the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with detailed discussions of the composers Arriaga, Albeniz, Granados, Falla, Turina, and Mompou. The special influence of the guitar on Spanish keyboard music occupies a separate chapter. Powell concludes with a treatment of musical trends in Spain since World War II. Appendixes list published sources of Spanish keyboard music, a glossary provides the rhythmic patterns of many traditional Spanish dance forms, and, finally, a bibliography completes this valuable reference work

Kurzfassung: The boundaries between linguistics and the various humane sciences- philosophy, psychology, anthropology-continue to shrink, and at the same time the two disciplines of linguistics and semiotics are being brought into direct contact with each other. It is the exploration of this interface that concerns Irmengard Rauch in the opening chapter, "What Is Signifying?" The remaining thirteen essays consider all aspects of language as semiotic act in six major topic divisions: definition of language; the pragmatics, semantics, and syntax of the language act; the Peircean categories of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness; language in relation to nonverbal communication; the language-likeness in animate existence; and the intersection of linguistics and semiotics. The contributors to this volume are William P. Alston, Raimo Anttila, John N. Deely, William Orr Dingwall, Paul Ekman, Robert B. Lees, David McNeill, Charles E. Kurzfassung: A central figure during the peak of Tang dynasty literary activity, the poet Wang Wei (701-761) combined a subtle, deceptively simple imagery with a profound philosophical interpretation of the world based on integration and harmony. Although his poetry has been translated in the West, Wang Wei has not received a great deal of critical attention because of the elusive quality of his work. Pauline Yu has translated and annotated 150 of his poems, the most representative selection of Wang Wei in English to date. She corrects previous translators' prejudices for the nature poetry of Wang Wei by including generous samplings of the poet's juvenilia, court poetry, and Buddhist verse. An extensive introductory chapter discusses Taoist and "metaphysical" traditions in Chinese literature as well as Western Symbolist, post-Symbolist, and phenomenological theories as they pertain to the poetry of Wang Wei. Pauline Yu's exegeses opening each chapter of poetry suggest some interpretive guidelines. The individual poems, however, are allowed to speak for themselves and are accompanied only by notes and commentary explaining historical and literary allusions. Punctuated Chinese texts for all translations and a character glossary of key terms and names appear in appendixes-both of these features are unique among translations of Wang Wei's work

Kurzfassung: The Structure of Intonational Meaning presents a linguistic study of English intonation, described in the original 1980 front flap as follows: "Using the data of English intonation, D. Robert Ladd, Jr., investigates the theoretical and methodological assumptions of past studies in the field. His impressive synthesis develops a new, comprehensive foundation for the study of English intonation in general. Ladd discusses a number of long-standing issues, including the relation of stress to intonation (and the associated questions of the phonological nature of sentence accent and the phonetic nature of stress), the various approaches to the placement of sentence accent, the phonological analysis of intonation contours into 'levels' or 'configurations', and the 'lexical' and 'syntactic' approaches to the meaning of intonation."

Kurzfassung: Silence, as poets and thinkers in every age have realized, is not the mere absence of something else. It is a complex, positive phenomenon that occurs in language, in music, and in mime. Bernard P. Dauenhauer offers an original, comprehensive, and explicitly phenomenological analysis of silence in all its aspects. In the first part of the study the author describes the various kinds of silence, explores the relationship of silence to different types of discourse (political, artistic, moral, religious, and technological), and presents an intentional analysis, delimiting the essential characteristics of silence. Testing his insights against the thought of other philosophers who have considered the meaning of silence-notably Heidegger, Hegel, Husserl, Sartre, Derrida. and Merleau-Ponty-Dauenhauer, in the second part of the book, constructs an ontological interpretation of the significance of silence. The synthesis that emerges demonstrates the complexity of silence and its important role in a broadly conceived philosophy of language

Kurzfassung: With this volume, Prusek's enlightening essays on modern Chinese writings are available for the first time in book form. Prusek traces two traditions in Chinese literature-the lyrical/subjective strain of the literati and the epic/objective tradition of folk literature-and, through their interaction, demonstrates important relationships between traditional and modern Chinese literature. He further explores "correspondences" to both realistic and lyrical trends in European literature. Included in this collection are "Subjectivism and Individualism in Modern Chinese Literature,'' "Introduction to Studies in Modern Chinese Literature," "A Confrontation of Traditional Oriental Literature with Modern European Literature in the Context of the Chinese Literary Revolution," "Reality and Art in Chinese Literature," "Lu Hsün's 'Huai chiu': A Pre- cursor of Modern Chinese Literature," "The Changing Role of the Narrator in Chinese Novels at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century." "Mao Tun and Yü Ta-fu," and 'Yeh Shen-t'ao and Anton Chekov." A fascinating exchange of views between Pn'isek and another eminent scholar, C. T. Hsia, is presented in a final essay and in an appendix. Their differing methodologies, approaches, and standards of literary judgment provide the student of modern Chinese literature with some rewarding insights about the analysis of literary texts

Kurzfassung: Linguistics has traditionally dealt with questions about structure-what are the parts of a language and how are they assembled? Naomi Baron adopts a new approach by asking what a human language is used for and how it achieves its goals. She carefully examines what is communicated, why it is important. and how the exchange is accomplished. In the process of this basic redefinition, she fashions a lucid, systematic introduction to the study of linguistics. The initial chapters discuss language as a source and solution to problems of human communication, the various aspects of representation, the definition of human language, and a methodology for the functional analysis of language. The three chapters that follow fully explore this functional perspective for spoken, written, and signed languages, and offer new evidence to demonstrate the effect of social context on linguistic structure. Speech, Writing, and Sign is profusely illustrated with drawings, photographs, and reproductions of artistic examples. Written to be accessible to beginning students, this book will also interest linguistic scholars because of its challenges to current linguistic theory
