Abstract: In this authoritative study, one of the first to appear in English, Erik Levi explores the ambiguous relationship between music and politics during one of the darkest periods of recent cultural history. Utilising material drawn from contemporary documents, journals and newspapers, he traces the evolution of reactionary musical attitudes which were exploited by the Nazis in the final years of the Weimar Republic, chronicles the mechanisms that were established after 1933 to regiment musical life throughout Germany and the occupied territories, and examines the degree to which the climate of xenophobia, racism and anti-modernism affected the dissemination of music either in the opera house and concert hall, or on the radio and in the media

Abstract: The four years of the Bush presidency cover a momentous era in American and world history. In international affairs the events in Eastern Europe and the then Soviet Union in late 1989 gave the President a high profile. The advent of the 'New World Order' made the United States pre-eminent: the triumph of the West was assured, with the added bonus of the 'peace dividend' as arms control agreements and defense savings seemed imminent. The President's personal popularity flourished in this climate and reached a new peak with the triumph of the allied forces in the Gulf War. The Gulf conflict saw Bush at his most decisive: firm in his moral stance, skilled in his action to bring together allied support backed by the United Nations, and confident in his handling of public opinion

Abstract: This volume brings together a series of recent analyses spanning the whole period of Soviet domination of Eastern Europe. The essays - by Western, Russian, and East European experts - present a wide and varied picture of the period. The authors use newly available materials to investigate different aspects of Soviet-East European relations - party affairs, military and political coordination, cultural and mass media policies, as well as the crises and conflicts emerging from the relationship itself

Abstract: Updated to cover events between 1986 and 1992, including the destruction of the mosque at Ayodhya in December 1992, the book analyses the secessionist crisis in Punjab which led to Indira Gandhi's murder and examines larger themes of ethnic conflict and threats to Indian unity. The Punjab example sheds light on processes at work in the rest of India, as the introduction to the new edition of the book points out. It also considers the domestic implications for India of a world in which 'socialism' and 'non-alignment' have lost much of their meaning

Abstract: One of the first studies of the full career of M S Gorbachev as Soviet leader, this book traces his seven-year struggle to reform the Soviet system and his failure to preserve it. Mr Miller analyses characteristics of Gorbachev that puzzled the West - his reformist gradualism, his relationship to the Communist party, his attitudes to communism, revolution, democracy and nationalism - and explores their role in the collapse of Soviet power

Abstract: This book is concerned with the ideological origins of the cold war and how it was fought by economic means. The book revolves around four major themes. Firstly, it is argued that the origin of the cold war is not to be found in rational, economic motivation, but in ideology through which both the East and West perceived 'reality'. Secondly, these ideological preconceptions generated complex feed-back processes of hostility that lasted forty years. Thirdly, although this hostility was expressed in political, ideological and military terms, the decisive battle was fought in economic terms as each nation devoted resources to unproductive military purposes. Finally, the end of the cold war came with the collapse of the dysfunctional Soviet economy. Although, the Soviets lost the cold war, in the light of the ascendancy of its competitors, the United States did not win it

Abstract: The book offers a clear, authoritative and readable guide to the modern history of Afghanistan. This remote land made up of many tribes and ethnic peoples on the borders of Central Asia became a focus of Superpower rivalry and international intrigue after the Soviet invasion in 1979. This book shows how Afghanistan's traditional society has been profoundly shaken up in a cruelly destructive war, causing the world's biggest refugee problem and a chronic instability which threatens the wider region

Abstract: Mozambique: A War against the People examines the nature of the war that has been waged by the Renamo rebels in Mozambique since 1976, and the profound effects that it has had on, in particular, the country's human infrastructure. The toll of the war has been manifested most dramatically in the geographical dislocation of a large section of the population. Along with the Frelimo government's policy failures this has served to limit socialist development in the past. It now threatens potential for development along the capitalist and democratic road

It considers the character of the states, their principal foreign policy goals and the beliefs that influences their relations. The author seeks on this basis to examine the character of the system as a whole: in particular how from the proclaimed desire to maintain the 'balance of power' it succeeded in establishing international stability in preventing the domination of particular states

Abstract: Stalin's fascination with writers was fully reciprocated as the many 'Odes to Stalin' show. During the 1970s a hugely elaborated system was established for the regulation of belles-lettres based on institutions, ideas and individuals. This original study, ten years in preparation, is based on extensive access to Soviet archives. Much new evidence has been uncovered about the inner workings of cultural policy in the Stalin period and documents by Stalin himself are published for the first time

Abstract: The Second World War shattered and remade the world. Two great powers - the United States and the Soviet Union - warily confronted each other across the smoking ruins of Europe. But the end of war for Europeans prompted a surge of renewed struggle in colonial areas, as nationalist groups sought greater autonomy or independence. The weakened, tottering empires of Britain, France, and the Netherlands - their myths of military and racial superiority destroyed by the wartime line of march - were beset. American policymakers were no longer afforded the luxury of ignoring colonial problems as they began to fashion a new globalism to counter Soviet influence

Abstract: The book examines the origins, development and contemporary significance of the Soviet doctrine of 'limited sovereignty' ('Brezhnev Doctrine'), with particular reference to the Doctrine's implications for the Soviet Union's relations with Eastern Europe. The author identifies and considers the multiple functions served by the Soviet Union's essentially dualistic or 'bi-axial' approach to sovereignty, which embraces notions derived from both general international law and from Soviet Marxist-Leninist doctrine. The book also includes a comparative analysis of the US 'Monroe Doctrine'. The author argues that, although in the Gorbachev era of 'new thinking', the Soviet doctrine of sovereignty may be developing a 'third axis', Western predictions of the imminent or actual demise of the 'Brezhnev Doctrine' are premature
