Abstract: Dositej Obradović's Život i priključenija is generally considered the symbolic herald of modern Serbian literature, a paradigmatic text which affected many later writers, including Gerasim Zelić. The paper compares Dositej's work and Zelić's Žitije focusing on three levels: firstly, it tracks the common topoi and the distinctive characteristics of the two texts; secondly, it discusses the ways in which Zelić reinterprets Dositej's model, especially with respect to autobiography and travelogue; finally, it elaborates on the different yet cognate notion of authorship the two texts propose

Abstract: Between the 14th and 15th centuries, a dense network of trade relations was active in the maritime basin of the western Mediterranean. The three regional areas that overlooked this sea, the Iberian and Provencal, the Italian and the African, and all the islands that were present in it, were equipped with numerous and important landing points and were connected by a dense network of exchanges. The essay takes into consideration the characteristics of this network of economic and cultural connections, and analyzes, particularly through the use of the Datini Archive, the role of the port of Rome in this system of exchanges and the links that merchants and bankers who acted in this city entertained with the Iberian mercantile centers

Abstract: The two major ports on the French Atlantic coast have many points in common, including the facilities of relations with their hinterland. But, in the sixteenth century, they had a very different destiny. Bordeaux was a passive port, waiting for the ships to load the products offered by its merchants (wine, pastel) and redistributing it in its hinterland. Rouen had to supply Paris and the Paris region, to bring raw materials for the Normandy industry and to look for outlets for its productions: this port therefore quickly turned to distant destinations where it could satisfy the needs of its economy

Abstract: The essay deals with the exhibition "Schools as huts and books as works of art. From Brazil to the Agro Romano" (Scuole come capanne e libri come opere d'arte. Dal Brasile all'Agro Romano), which collected educational materials and objects of daily life made for the schools of the Brazilian Indians, as well as those of the farmers of the Agro Romano of the early 20th Century. The dialogue between these materials underlines the centrality of beauty in education and in creating a better world

Abstract: This book investigates the evolution of rusticated facings in perhaps one of the most significant contexts for their history, namely the architecture of the 15th century in Florence, where the development of this type of masonry intertwines with that of the buildings constructed over the century. Their main distinctive trait is naturalism, which in different shapes and degrees permeates every facing, thus becoming a sort of local inflection, which contaminates even the most up-to-date languages. The Florence renovatio of ancient architecture passes indeed from the masonries, as pointed out by many writings from that period, which describe their contemporary rusticated facings and compare them to the massif ancient opus quadratum. While accepting the lesson on magnificence by the Julio-Claudian rustication, Florence facings would never become a faithful reproduction of the Roman models, but would always retain traditional characters and patterns, constantly oscillating between an expressive freedom and a yearning for the rigour of form

Abstract: The histaminergic system is a pleiotropic system that commands general states of metabolism and consciousness, including learning and memorizing both pleasurable and aversive events. Brain histamine mediates the central effects of a signal molecule produced in the intestine, namely oleoylethanolamide (OEA). OEA is released by the enterocytes in response to high fat intake and reduces eating, by indirectly activating a subpopulation of histaminergic neurons. In her thesis, she explored other potential interactions between these two systems in the pursuit of unexplored neuronal mechanisms that may shed light on the mode of action of psychoactive agents and possibly lead to the development of new drugs

Abstract: The refugee's gaze is always plural and not only able to grasp, but also to promote the different dimensions of culture: an event, a landscape, a human activity unfold in front of their gaze, with the memory of a different environment, far away in time, as a constant background. The first edition of the initiative Filmare l'Alterità (Filming Otherness), created by the SAGAS Department of the University of Florence, was born with a clear goal: to try and represent this gaze through mobile devices and moving images. What we asked foreign citizens living in Florence and in the neighbouring towns was to not to tell us about their life, but about ours, and to do it by starting from the urban landscape

Abstract: This essay examines how the various processes of economic integration brought about by commercial exchanges were influenced by networks of merchants, by the different functions and capacities of ports, and by the various locations of routes established between the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the North Sea. The ports, the routes and ships, and the mentality and culture of the economic operators represent the three main themes of this study; it aims to observe and compare maritime environments which were completely different from one another, especially in terms of the size of the ports and the importance of the commercial itineraries based on them

Abstract: Between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries commerce in northern Europe expanded and contracted. The long term net effect of the trade increase was an overall substantial impact on the economy and on the culture of the lands around the North and Baltic Seas. The development of interdependent markets can be indicated by examining the tendency of prices to converge in different places. Relying on previous research and novel ways of constructing indices using price data from a number of ports in northern Europe it is possible to confirm both the long term direction, with ups and downs, toward market integration as well as the emergence in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries of regional markets in certain food grains

Abstract: While travelling across Europe, the enlightened Orthodox monk Gerasim Zelić mentally never abandons his native Dalmatia. Moving from his Žitije, which is essentially a travelogue, the paper aims to analyse the tension between the open-minded, secular Zelić and the other Zelić, who identified himself with the Orthodox traditions of Dalmatia without knowing how to adjust them to modernity. According to the author, his rational head and his romantic heart make his global outlook deeply controversial and his mentality typical of a Homo Mediterraneus

Abstract: In HTML pages the language of the document content is indicated by so-called language tags. The present paper explores the various meanings the primary language subtag can denote within the context of 18th and early 19th century literary Serbian. Particular attention is paid to the status of slavenosrpski. As has been shown before when using ISO language tags, their meaning is too broad for direct application within linguistic analyses. The primary subtags will therefore have to be extended, along the lines defined in BCP 47, in order to arrive at meaningful language tags

Abstract: Genoese merchants, who certainly did not disappear after 1627, during the second half of the century were able to establish new global-scale commercial networks on a par with those of other merchant communities (those of the Jews for instance). In the 1660s and for a few decades, Genoese goods - paper and fabrics - sailed to the Indies with African slaves. On their way back, the same Genoese ships would carry tonnes of silver and a wealth of other colonial goods thereby increasing trade with the East. This commercial framework is the backdrop to the story of Nicolò and Pietro Francesco Fieschi, two brothers whose lives testify how between the second half of the seventeenth century and the early decades of the eighteenth century, merchants from Genoa certainly had not withdrawn from international commerce focusing only on financial profits. On the contrary they were able to find new commercial momentum in opportunities provided by the connections brought about by the ever-more globalised world

Abstract: This paper examines the first 50 transitional years of a sea of isolation to a sea of internationalization. It provides analytical tools to reveal the mechanisms of how this was done. To do so it places in the centre of the analysis the sea. By using the approach of maritime history, an analysis beyond political borders, it follows the glance from the sea and its effects on land. In this way it examines the shipping movements of cargoes and people on the sea and the development and impact of this developmentaround the sea, on the Black Sea maritime regions, the port cities that grew and the entrepreneurs that triggered this growth and established its maritime networks

Abstract: The thirteenth volume of Comunicazioni dell'Istituto Papirologico «G. Vitelli» is divided, as was the previous one, into three sections: 1. Editions and rieditions of texts; 2. Critical notes; 3. Chronique de lexicographie papyrologique de la vie matérielle. In the first section there are texts which are being published for the first time or which are subject to a revision and a new edition, both belonging to various collections. This section also includes the exhibition of an exceptional artefact from the Arab period, belonging to the Papyrological Institute "G. Vitelli"'s collection. The second section includes three contributions with careful palaeographic and linguistic observations on literary and documentary texts, and a fourth contribution offering an exhaustive summary of the publication state of an archive from the Institute's collection. Lastly, the third section, as consolidated by the previous volume of the Comunicazioni, collects several findings of the international research project on the lexicography of material culture (Lex.Pap.Mat.), documented in the language of papyri.

Abstract: Scarti, tracce e frammenti: controarchivio e memoria dell'umano. Literature and art, increasingly interested in the dark side of production, now appear as a reservoir of fragments and waste of all sorts. The attraction towards scraps, conceived as anti-goods, testifies the existence of a parallel world where the myths of growth and productivity show their tragic face. Through different textualities and media, waste emerges as a testimony of a subversive marginality from which unexpected perspectives, which can undermine the established order, arise. The volume, using the image of waste, offers a hidden or marginalized counter history, which however 'returns' overbearingly in order to give contemporaneity its shapeless substance

Abstract: This volume, organised in thirty-two essays written by thirty-five among the most successful Italian scholars in the field of Slavic Studies, offers an extensive overview of the studies which have been conducted in Italy on Slavic literature, philology, linguistics, history and culture in recent years. Overall, the work highlights the great variety of paths and lines of research which shaped Italian Slavic Studies, and which are still being used for this field. This volume shows several realities of the Slavic countries in their multifaceted relations with other European cultures, and is addressed to researchers focusing only on Slavic Studies as well as to specialists from other fields who are interested in further investigating topics related to the close net of relationships between the Slavic world and the rest of Europe in the past and present

Abstract: Connettivi tedeschi e poeticità: l'attivazione dell'interprete tra forma e funzione. Studio teorico e analisi di un caso esemplare. Starting from Jakobson's definition of poeticalness, the volume studies the mechanisms by which connectors, such as linguistic signs assigned to the connection between parts of speech, contribute to the poeticalness in a text, which is here intended as a textual peculiarity capable of activating the interpreter in the tout court language, but mainly in the literary text. The first two chapters of this volume offer an overview of the theoretical and methodological foundations that justify the choice to acquire the connectors as possible indicators of poeticalness, and also a preparatory introduction to the third chapter, where there is the description of the results from a study on the syntax and semantics of the connector in in a collection of German poetry texts from the first half of the 20th century

Abstract: This volume analyses the phenomenon of the thefts of sacred relics in Medieval Italy, in particular through the stealthy translationes, the hagiographic stories narrating the transfer of the relics from one place to another after they were stolen. Thanks to the study of historical contexts, narrative dynamics, literary themes and anthropological aspects, the book attempts to reconstruct the richness and complexity of the phenomenon over the centuries, tracing the history of this specific aspect of the cult of saints, which is also the history of the culture and religious imagery of the Middle Ages

Abstract: This paper contributes to the discussion of merchant networks in late medieval Europe by presenting a case study of the Soranzo fraterna, a Venetian trading firm which comprised brothers Donado, Giacomo (Jacopo), Piero, and Lorenzo Soranzo and operated in the first half of the 15th century, specializing mainly in the import of raw cotton from Syria. The author applies the methodology of so-cial network analysis (SNA) in order to reconstruct the egocentric (ego-centered) network of ties linking the Soranzo firm ("the ego") with its partners and clients ("alters")

Abstract: Granito e arcobaleno. Forme e modi della scrittura auto/biografica collects essays on issues regarding relationships and their fragile balances, between reality and fiction, experience and memory, private and public, autonomy and relatedness, referential truth and subjective truth, between the self and the other. The contributions also involve concepts such as the social, cultural, geopolitical or even rhetorical space, where the auto/biographical subject is situated; the 'materiality' of the body, which perceives and internalizes the images, sensations and experiences of the external world; the agency and the linguistic, discursive, social and cultural constraints to which it is subjected. After a theoretical introduction, this volume explores individual case studies that can be traced back to different and sometimes distant cultural realities, then concludes with an artist's reflection on art and life

Abstract: Giovanni di Pagolo Morelli's Ricordi, long known to historians, are published here for the first time in an integral version which is also linguistically faithful to the original manuscript. This new critical edition is accompanied by a long introductory essay on the author, the intentions of his work and the results it had by the heirs to whom it was addressed. The 74 years of Giovanni Morelli's life, from the 1370s to the mid 1440s, are placed in a decisive time span for the history of Florence, and they are marked by a strong social mobility of which the Morellis, a family with humble origins, were the protagonists. Reading the Ricordi, and combining them with the analysis of the substantial remaining documentation borne by the author and his family, help understand the strong push to social rise which animated Morelli, and the reasons for his descendants' position among Florence's prominent family scene of the late 15th century

Abstract: This paper analyses the rise of Swedish trade and shipping in the Mediterranean in the eighteenth century. It focuses on three factors that shaped Sweden's role in the area: foreign policy interest, foreign trade policy (mercantilism), and commodity demand and supply. The foreign policy interest is represented by attempts to build an alliance with the Ottoman Empire against Russia. An outcome of this was the short-lived Swedish Levant Company. The second factor relates to Sweden's mercantilist policy in the Mediterranean, embodied in the Swedish Navigation Act, trade and peace treaties with the North-African states, and the consular services in southern Europe. Sea salt was in the core of this policy-a strategic commodity in northern Europe. Southern Europe, too, was important market for Swedish exports goods: iron, tar and pitch, and planks

Abstract: Psychomotor education became an educational practice around the 1960s. Its history, research and practices are affected by the educational transformation of a transmission or application model of intervention towards a global and relational educational process of the person through discovery, research and active practices. Starting from these references, psychomotor education is based on a personal epistemology of knowing and learning by the subject as a global, autopoietic, dynamic system, embodied in the context of action. However, the educational dimension of psychomotricity is not limited to the educational process alone. If its origin mostly presents a re-educational matrix, development has taken on a path of prevention, support and educational, re-educational and therapeutic support. Its cultural and theoretical references are complex and interdisciplinary and emphasize the domination of the autopoietic and self-referring subject of its future

Abstract: The chapter analyzes, from a diachronic perspective, the role of trade with the Levant in the port industries of Genoa, Livorno, and Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries. An historical period in which the international trade system underwent substantial changes. From the expansion of the Atlantic routes to the official claim by the United Provinces and English, to the Italian Mariner crisis and the gradual advance of Nordic fleets along the Western Mediterranean routes. The Atlantic ships had an increasing influence on Genoa's port industry. It was, however, Livorno who gained the most advantage from the presence of Dutch and English merchant ships along routes which met at Alexandretta in San Giovanni of Acre, at Constantinople, and most of all, at Smyrna

Abstract: This article argues that a novel way to analyse maritime networks in premodern northern Europe is to trace the activities of people involved in conflict management. These people were traders, magistrates, judges, urban diplomats: sometimes all comprised in one person or a family. Specifically, if we take the Hanseatic city of Danzig and the Giese family as an example, it becomes apparent that these 'conflict managers' operated on various levels: the city, the region, the state, the Hanse and on the level of politics and economic policy between states and cities. Economic interests and conflicts were intertwined with political, social and cultural matters, and should be investigated together

Abstract: Teaching the history of education to future educators? One possible way to avoid the sclerotization of the discipline into an excessive focus on handbooks is to conceive it as a public history practice, interrogating specific cases under the lens of different historiographic paradigms. The goal will then be to promote "historical thinking" in the future educator as a training ground for exercising doubt and critical citizenship

Abstract: This work offers a new interpretation about the main groups implicated in the textile trade in Seville during the 16th century, proposing a new chronology concerning the substitution processes happened between them and the nature of the importance of those groups. This is specially clear in the longer endurance of the activity of castilian and mainly burgalese merchants in the importation of canvas, and also is remarkable the growing importance of the Castilian producction of clothes and silk (also in the Valencian case), covering an increasing share of the Peninsular and the American demand, existing cases of cooperation between those different groups

Abstract: Glass structures are being built ever more frequently all over the world, in a growing architectural trend towards light, transparency and sustainability. The engineering design of laminated glass elements being profoundly influenced by properties of interlayers, this multi-scale research highlights some among the key elements on the hyperelastic and viscoplastic response of such synthetic materials. Results and new discoveries are interpreted to better model and predict the response of laminated glass structures: examples are provided for design applications to post-failure safety assessments, structural design and cold-bending techniques. Still, in a vastly unknown field, a growing market and foggy regulatory framework, many challenges and research opportunities remain to be dealt with

Abstract: This paper, basing its analysis on England's national customs accounts between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, briefly examines England's ports as commercial nodes (of which London was the busiest, with Hull, Southampton and Bristol becoming the main regional hubs by the fifteenth century), its shipping (which provided both liner and tramping services and sailed all year round), and its exports (which shifted from wool to woollen cloth over the period). It then focuses on the range of markets with which English merchants and ships had direct maritime contacts

Abstract: Lucca occupies a special place in the history and historiography of the early Middle Ages in Italy and Europe. It was the heart of a political body of the Carolingian galaxy, namely the marque of Tuscia, which enjoyed exceptional success and remained vital throughout most of the 11th century. It is also one of the areas most accounted for in sources: the documentation on the Lucca area starting from the beginning of the 8th century is extraordinarily conspicuous and continuous. Hence the choice of this case study, to reflect again on overall historical transformations. This book starts from a systematic research on the documentary sources of Lucca, so wide that they are still largely unexplored, and aims at reconstructing the fundamental parameters that governed the functioning of a court society, and at following its transformation processes up to the noble and chivalric age. At the centre of the investigation lies the social segment which gradually assumed aristocratic features and a more defined profile of distinction, and promoted the foundation of castles in the countryside as well as the formation of territorial areas on which to exercise powers of command and coercion

Abstract: A rich cultural insight of Rome in the second half of the 18th century emerges from the edition of an autograph memoir on the journey from Florence to Southern Italy made by the librarian Angelo Maria Bandini (1780-1781). Lounges, coffees and chocolates, religious rites, curial relations and the reforming action by Pope Pious VI are the backdrop to the meticulous description of Rome as a 'diffused museum'. Bandini, librarian and scholar of the enlightenment century, visits and observes palaces, art galleries, cabinets and churches, paying particular attention to libraries, whose metaphorical sieve gives birth to remarkable pieces and precious curiosities

Abstract: Si può comprendere la matematica con forbici, colla, spago e mattoncini da costruzione? This volume, which features almost every work from the 2014 and 2016 editions of the Riccardo Ricci Mathematical Laboratory Award, explains how it is possible to understand Mathematics, even using the most advanced technologies such as lasers. The featured works were performed by groups of high school students, under the supervision of the teachers who have personally wrote the drafting. Those are creative and imaginative works, whose reading is recommended to teachers interested in a laboratory approach to Mathematics, as well as to all enthusiasts of the subject. The Award recalls Riccardo Ricci (1953-2013)'s didactic spirit: he was professor of Dynamic Systems at the University of Florence and a point of reference in the city's mathematical community, also thanks to his roles as referent of the Scientific Degree Project and teacher in the courses of teacher training

Abstract: The exhibition at Villa La Quiete focuses on three important Renaissance sculptures, which had never been exposed to the public before. On this occasion, the works were carefully restored, continuing on the path of the previous restauration of the Villa's artistic heritage at the hands of the University of Florence; the new restoration was supported by the Terna group, whose liberal donation helped restore one of the works on display, namely the beautiful in stucco Madonna with Child from Lorenzo Ghiberti's workshop. This work comes with a rare terracotta piece of a Madonna with Child, by one of Donatello's followers, and a Christ, the Saviour, in painted terracotta as well, made by the artist Agnolo di Polo, who trained in Andrea Verrocchio's workshop. The three sculptures are a part of the oldest core of the Villa's collections, and represent a relevant example of the refined production of the multifaceted workshops of the Renaissance in Florence

Abstract: Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize for Physics in 1938, taught at the Royal University of Florence. Fermi's stay in Florence was short and only lasted two academic years (1924/25 and 1925/26); during those years, he taught "Mathematical Physics" and "Rational Mechanics" courses. This volume contributes to the reconstruction of this quite unknown period of Fermi's life, marked however by the publication of the Fermi statistics, a scientific breakthrough which would bring the Italian scientist to international celebrity thanks to its application in several fields of physics. This work is at the base, among other things, of semiconductor physics and therefore of modern electronics. The text also features Enrico Fermi's "Lessons of Rational Mechanics" to Science students and to students from the two-year preparatory course for Engineering studies during the aforementioned time span. The topics Enrico Fermi addressed in his lectures include kinematics and point dynamics, kinematics and statics of rigid systems and system statics in general. Lastly, the lessons contain 'Lagrangia''s equations and some elements of hydromechanics

Abstract: The author moves from the case of Gerasim Zelić to ponder on the concept of "Eastern Adriatic", which generally refers to a border area where different religions, political and administrative models, languages, cultures and identities come together. Assuming that the sea is a gigantic text through which the past can be read, the author presents the Eastern Adriatic as an example of mare storia and eventually suggests to apply the concept of "multiple borderlands" to this area, whose history is actually the history of numerous large and small boundaries that deserve a painstaking description

The collected speeches reconstruct Paolo Barile's life and thoughts, from his cultural and scientific training during his youth to joining the judiciary, becoming a member of the Italian Action Party, the Resistance, then his meeting with Piero Calamandrei, his studies and the career as university professor. The professorship was never really separated from his strong civil and cultural commitment, from the exercise of his beloved lawyer profession and from a constant political commitment which led him to become a Minister during Ciampi's Government in 1993

Abstract: What was the Roman Inquisition? How did inquisitors operate in the Italian society of the 16th and 17th century? In an attempt to answer these questions, the author analyses the inquisitors' familia , the Court of Faith's large group of assistants. In the light of rich unpublished records, this research is the first to reconstruct the events around the Holy Office's "staff", which consisted of vicars, notaries, lawyers, consultants, policemen, bodyguards and many others. The publication deals with the issues related to these officers, their geographic distribution and the brotherhoods used for their classification. Following this, the analysis shifts to the privileges enjoyed by the members of these "families", and the often heinous abuses they committed, demonstrating how the Inquisition became an element of social and moral disorder whenever its authority was questioned

Abstract: This article examines travel letters that Ljubomir Nenadović (1826-1895) wrote from Switzerland (1847), Italy (1850-1851) and Germany (1870). Marking three different phases in the literary biography of their author, these texts provide evidence of the travel letter's polyphonic nature. We argue that the dynamic shape and narrative texture of Nenadović's letters find their source in the nature of the differences that he observes and identifies, differences that distinguish these countries from his Serbian homeland and, more generally, from the cultural and geographic space of the Slavs

Analyzing these letters in the context of Russia's diplomatic and epistolary relations with Venice in the 17th and 18th centuries, we examine their structure and composition with particular attention to the presence of diplomatic and epistolary formulae to identify evolutionary changes in the diplomatic and epistolary etiquette employed by Peter I and his successors

Abstract: In the decades prior to the Revolution of 1917, the Russian intelligencija was strongly influenced by Western European intellectuals, including Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche was one of the European philosophers who played a prominent role in shaping Russian perceptions of reality in this period, although his thought was interpreted by Russians in contrasing ways. The article examines the case of Dmitrij Merežkovskij, reassessing the extent of Nietzsche's influence on his oeuvre. In our view, Nietzsche did not only influence Merežkovskij's early poetry, where aesthetic and anti-Christian views prevail, but also contributed to the sensual and individualist nature of his later prose

Abstract: The anonymous Choždenie na Florentijskij sobor is one of four works written by Russian envoys to the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438-1439), an event that sealed the union of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. This article addresses the problem of that unknown author's social status, an issue of controversy in the several studies devoted to this text beginning in the 19th century. Our linguistic and stylistic analysis examines the author in terms of his cultural literacy and explores how his conception of literary standards was shaped by specific experiences of reading and writing

Abstract: According to 19th-century philologist Jernej Kopitar, elite literary traditions and modern written languages originated in folk literature. Leading Slovenian intellectuals of his day, however, including poet France Prešeren and linguist and critic Matija Čop, favored classic poetic forms reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance. In Slovenian literary history, Kopitar has remained a figure of secondary importance; nonetheless, his role in other South Slavic cultures was preeminent. We examine several attempts to revert this tendency and to ascribe to Kopitar, and not only to Čop, a leading role in Slovenian nation-building

A recent aspect of this process, started by North American university institutions such as Stanford, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is represented by the worldwide offer of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which have no limit concerning the number of participants. and do not require a binding and expensive registration. Using international literature on the subject, this study analyses the origins and evolution of this new system of university teaching

This collection of international contributions, as well as celebrating Maria Edgeworth's 250th anniversary, proposes some further investigation on two fundamental aspects of her thought and legacy, still little examined in depth: her interest in the education of the young (and of the adults supposed to educate them) in an empirical perspective, explicitly scientific, open to different religious confessions and addressed to all social classes; and the urge for a wider and shared tolerance for alterity. The various essays in the collection offer some insight on the multi-layered relationships between the universe of education and its relationship with the development of knowledge, literature - particularly children's literature - and pedagogy, as well as between women's emancipation and the development of both individual and social identity. Their common ground is a dialogic perspective aiming to connect areas of scholarship, which the academia generally classifies into separate research fields

Abstract: This volume analyses the judgement techniques and the substantial protection offered by the Italian Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights in the context of 'ethically sensitive' issues, such as medically assisted procreation and homo-affective unions. The investigation touches on different profiles of constitutional law: the multilevel protection between Rome, Strasbourg and common judges; the problematic emergence of 'new rights' in the face of scientific evolution and changing social sentiment; the dynamics between case and statutory law. The author proposes new judging techniques aimed at guaranteeing an effective protection of the interests at stake, as well as at reducing the distances between case and statutory power

Abstract: This wide-ranging theme takes Braudel's concept of the "Mediterranean" as its starting point. Braudel's vision of an enclosed sea as a geographical opportunity for economic integration between nations with different religions, languages and ethnicities and political bodies still functions as a model for studies on a wide range of contexts. The goal of the 50th Study Week was to go beyond the study of individual systems in isolation, and to combine instead different analysis of open and enclosed seas or coastal areas in order to understand the integration role played by maritime connections in Europe. Since in pre-industrial civilizations water transport was easier than land transport, the time has come to bring attention to the way these relationship networks operated both on a European level and with Asian and North African trade partners. This volume starts from the great research traditions which have, however, rarely been integrated on a larger and continental scale, and analyses them on either a regional or thematic basis. Immanuel Wallerstein has developed Braudel's concept by conceptualising its intercultural and transnational dimensions and its role in the system of labour. He called it a "world system", not because it involves the whole world, but because it is larger than any legally defined political unit. And it is a "world economy" because the base link between the different parts of the system has an economic nature. The various regional research aspects and traditions have been linked together in a coherent approach which aims at evaluating: - What geographical, nautical, technical, economic, legal, social and cultural elements influenced the emergence of the various regional networks, and how these worked; - The nature and role of seaports as nodal points of sea routes and of their hinterland through rivers, canals and roads; - The commercial and personal ties between merchants and shipowners in various ports; - How regional networks connected with each other and how, over time, they ended up integrating into larger units; - How private networks, initially between merchant and seafarer organizations, ended up dealing with local authorities and, after their growth, with states and empires in order to protect their interests

Abstract: The paper summarizes the results of a research project dedicated to Serbian archimandrite Gerasim Zelić (1758-1828), one of the main protagonists of the interconfessional polemic that engulfed the Serbian Orthodox community living in Dalmatia between the 17th and 19th centuries. Firstly, the paper describes the activities that were carried out during the project, particularly the digitalization and on-line publication of a corpus of manuscript documents connected to Zelić. Secondly, it presents the results of a historical and culturological analysis conducted on the aforementioned documents

Abstract: Luigi Dei has found his own language through which he, while amusing himself and everyone else, offers us food for thought, information, knowledge and, above all, with continuity and originality, he disseminates science by apparently talking about other things, playing with our emotions, with our history, traditions and common sense. A cultural divertissement in which the author exploits the visibility and prestige of his role as Rector to give credibility and legitimacy to the project of making scientific knowledge more and more accessible and shared, also thanks to his great ability to intertwine themes and languages. Dei uses all the colours of the diversified palette of scientific disciplines constituting our knowledge in order to show us how each of them is assigned an irreplaceable role in that task of understanding reality that science has always taken on. He highlights how science combines method and rigour with creativity and imagination, but he also combines research and scientific knowledge with sensitivity and communication skills. (Laura Solito)

Abstract: Intellettuali e uomini di regime nell'Italia fascista. This volume collects nine essays on political, economic and legal culture in Italy during fascism. The reconstruction of prominent personalities of the regime, such as Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata and Alberto Beneduce, are accompanied by studies analysing the at times critical, at times organic relationship between the regime and a series of reputed intellectuals, such as Vilfredo Pareto, Giuseppe Maranini, Jacopo Mazzei and Francesco A. Répaci. A chapter is dedicated to Edoardo Moroni, Minister of Agriculture during the Italian Social Republic, who after the war emigrated to Argentina, where he made a significant contribution to the agrarian reform of the country. This volume also includes two essays outside of the biographical trend: the first focuses on the theme of unemployment during Fascism, while the second presents the main aspects of the Urban Planning Act of 1942

Abstract: By means of a comparative analysis of the 'Dutch case' with the Saintonge in South-West France and Bohuslän in South-West Sweden, this paper analyses the rise and decline of maritime services clusters in preindustrial Europe. The leading question for this comparative analysis is: Was the 'Dutch case' exceptional or can similar developments be recognised in other parts of Europe as well? A survey of the regional economic origins of communities of maritime transporters is combined with analyses of their operations and institutions. Relying on primary sources, the paper addresses the contribution of a great many 'anonymous' people, that literally connected the 'nodes' in international maritime trade networks, but whose contribution to the preindustrial European economy has been assumed a priori rather than thoroughly investigated

Abstract: The objective of the thesis was to illustrate the trajectory of Iranian nuclear crisis from the origins of the nuclear program to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly referred as the nuclear deal. The guiding thread was the concept of "nuclear ambiguity", which was addressed in the following terms: the civilian-military application of the atom constituted the primary source and was further exacerbated by several loopholes in the non-proliferation regime; Teheran exploited both sources and developed a large program with possible military dimensions. The JCPOA attempted to break this trend by limiting Iran's program only to peaceful goals and by creating an unprecedented inspection mechanism. In other words, it attempted to go beyond the previous history of ambiguity

Abstract: This volume explores the issues of using e-learning in university and of developing and using a "blended learning" teaching method for the course of Computer Science from the first year of the the Medicine and Surgery Degree of the University of Florence. This course was used as a trial for the peer-review teaching method, which can be useful in classes with a high number of students; this publication also includes a selection of the best works produced by the students. The results of the trial prove the advantages of using the peer-review teaching method for other university courses, and the students' works on e-health give current medical practitioners insights on how to use ICT in their practice with skill and care

Abstract: The challenge of civil pedagogy - on which three examples are indicated in the final part of the article - is to go beyond the logics that guided it up to today to build a new patriotism that has the whole as a reference humanity. For centuries, civil pedagogy has been an integral part of the Nation building, but today it has to deal with the end of the age of Nations and with criticism of narratives based on historical-linguistic, religious, ethnic factors. The crisis of Welfare state is not only the result of its ability to produce well-being, but, first of all, it is an institutional crisis, especially in the school. Public History and Public Pedagogy are then called to retrace the history and the principles of modern institutions

Abstract: The article explores the cultural and linguistic interrelationship of Russia, Armenia and Europe through the lens of quotation and intertextuality in Andrei Bitov's Armenian Lessons (first edition 1969). This text is the ideal site for demonstrating the importance of quotation in the author's prose. We address two different aspects of this question, first Bitov's literary and cultural intertextual references; second, his quotations from everyday language. In both cases, the "language of the Other" seeps into the text, forming bridges that connect apparently distant cultures

Abstract: This article investigates the rhetoric of martyrdom that developed in seventeenth-century Ukraine and specifically the discourse of Orthodox martyrdom as elaborated by Ukrainian Baroque preachers in recounting the life and death of the martyrized princes Boris and Gleb. We focus in particular on one exemplary case, that of Antonij Radyvylovs'kyj's Slovo pervoe na sviatyx strastoterpec kniazej Borisa i Gleba (Kyiv, 1676). Tracing the contours of specific ideologies of martyrdom that arose in 17th-century Kyiv, we also address the issue of interconfessional encounters, in particular those taking place along the Orthodox-Catholic divide

Abstract: Facing the present in relation to the past, the "outsideness" of Italian Slavic studies can be seen to represent a liminal space between the self and the Other. This article discusses how the image of the Russian poet, who is capable of both satisfying a Russian quest for uniqueness and legitimizing what Western eyes often see as Russian culture's illegibility, intersects with themes raised in the field of diversity studies. Our close analysis of texts and facts, conducted using a polycentric approach and with reference to notions of "approximation" and "contamination", acknowledges differences as a step not towards their elimination or homogenization, but towards the "translation" into one's own culture of voices that were originally distinct

Abstract: The article addresses textual decisions made by Čechov's editors in publishing his early short stories. We demonstrate that choices made by other editors and translators has depended crucially on the configuration of his texts found in academic editions of Čechov's Complete Works. Specifically, in the volumes that these editions devote to the young Čechov, editors place what are in fact the first versions of these short stories in the critical appendix, while furnishing as the featured examples of these texts' versions that Čechov had reviewed and retouched for collections published during his lifetime. As a result, works of the "young Čechov" are often actually works of the "mature Čechov", a situation that has led to a worldwide misunderstanding

Housing adaptations are one of the main tools for improving quality of life for people with severe disabilities and for their caregivers. They are also the main tool of the ADA Project, an action research that developed a strategy to tailor adaptations to the specific user needs and profiles. After an introduction to disability, accessibility and housing adaptations, the book describes the ADA Project's goals, stages and tools. It then focuses on the main scientific outcome of the Project: the ADA Assessment Model (AdAM), an interdisciplinary tool that analyses and assesses the functional and social profile of disabled persons and their relationship with the physical environment in which they live

Shying away from apocalyptic as well as naively optimistic predictions, the Lecture offers some points for reflection on this question, constantly recurring in the media and the public, political and scientific debate. Based on what the past taught, the future depends on business and political strategies, and even on individual social actors

Abstract: In recent years, the unprecedented experimental control of the laws of quantum mechanics has led to the so-called quantum technology revolution, a terminology adopted to refer to the applications in which quantum properties play a prominent role. Also the fundamental physics has benefited from these advancements with the development of quantum simulators, controlled quantum platforms engineered in such a way to emulate the physics of complex systems difficult to investigate with classical approaches. The present work deals with the simulation of some fundamental properties of quantum-Hall systems by means of degenerate fermionic Ytterbium atoms confined in artificial periodic potentials. Extreme regimes, inaccessible to real solid-state system, have been explored, paving the way to the observation of exotic phases of matter

Abstract: «Si risponde lavorando». Letters between 1941 and 1992. In 1941, Macrí was a notorious scholar, while Spagnoletti only a debutant poet, but their knowledge of books and magazines brought them to an intense exchange of letters, which would be interrupted in 1956 due to profound disagreements on poetry and on the assessment of Hermeticism. This correspondence, fully transcribed and carefully enriched by Andrea Giusti's notes, retraces that intellectual relationship in some decisive years of Italian history. With Fascism, war and reconstruction as a background, there is the rise of the ferment underlying cultural collaborations, of Spagnoletti's anthologist activity and of Macrí's studies on comparative literature and Spanish, which led him to become more sensitive and open towards European culture

Abstract: The book discusses the work of Italian Capuchins in the face of American otherness, especially in the catechism of Indians and mestizos accused of being devil's wizards. The friars faced a crisis in missionary optimism in the face of an alleged indigenous resistance to Christianity or to European social rules. The Portuguese colonial sources reveal evangelization as a field of dispute between the friars, the natives and the colonists, motivating daily conflicts, also encouraging changes in the social and symbolic traditions inside or near the missions. The indigenous people were not passive subjects in the process, contradicting the missionaries for the determination with which, supposedly, they practiced their "gentile" customs and rites. The documentation gathered adds important information to the study of indigenous peoples in contact with Capuchins in the inner territories of Portuguese America

Abstract: Between the 18th and 19th centuries adventurism became a staple part of the bourgeois ideology of material acquisition. The paper focuses on Gerasim Zelić's Žitije, signalling how it is filled with descriptions of the struggle to reach an important social position and obtain material gain. Nevertheless, Zelić cannot be compared with contemporary adventurers, as he combines the aspiration of the Enlightenment with a strong faith in the concept of predestination, on one side, and the struggle to obtain personal gain with a strong commitment towards the common good, on the other

Abstract: We live in a historical period in which it is necessary and urgent to know and relate to stories. Today, the social function of memory is stronger and more evident than ever. The concept of memory, as well as that of recollection, is widely used, but those who resort to it are not always able to fully grasp its meaning. As a matter of fact, the educational function of memory is also expressed through narration. There is no narration and writing of oneself that does not bring within the testimony of a historical time, of a social group and of a precise epoch that reveals unusual nuances and situations, eager to be discovered and to become part of the social heritage. The oral and written narration allows narrators to feel part of a community, to feel in a "warm" place, in a comfortable area and part of a community rich in mutual interest and able to guarantee the rights of all and a reciprocal recognition. Addressing the question of the memory of a community in an era of fragility, of borders, of spaces shared more and more virtually and less physically, means to contrast isolation and the relational distance between people. Life stories provide us with descriptions and observations of how we live in a place, in a territory, in a family, in a school, in a company, in any situation in which human beings have exchanged stories and have learned from each other. The intent to collect the memories of the community, through life stories, autobiographies, arises from the need to look at the traces left by those who preceded us to better understand and face the future, that is, to pay attention to micro-stories. This contribution aims at reflecting on the educational and social value of autobiographies as important instruments for observation, investigation, analysis and restitution of new insights on the community through the educator's role as a facilitator with autobiographical skills

Abstract: The works of Serbian theologians of the second half of the 18th century are characterized by a confessional-polemic style, as their goal was to set the sacred doctrine and the organization of liturgical life. This polemic approach was also due to the unfortunate position of the Orthodox minorities within the Austrian Monarchy, exposed as they were to the pressure of the Catholic Church. Analysing the works of the leading Serbian theologians of the time (D. Novaković, J. Rajić, Z. Orfelin), the author explains how Serbian polemical theology was created and eventually found its own formal style

Abstract: Following Fernand Braudel's Méditerranée, historians interpreted the Mediterranean, Baltic, Atlantic, Indian Ocean or Pacific as closed maritime systems, consisting of multiple micro-environments. This essay seeks to overcome these limited perspectives and to examine, how the various seas and oceans were connected by the Vikings, the Cairo Genizah merchants and the Italian trading companies of the Middle Ages. The second part of my article "Connected Seas" examines the perception and memory of the seas as an element of maritime connectivity. It introduces the concept of realm of memory (lieu de mémoire) into maritime history and tests it in four case studies on the Sound, the Straits of Gibraltar, the Dardanelles and the Straits of Malacca

Abstract: This work aims at identifying the historical, cultural, political and strategic reasons that in 1935 led the anarchist Camillo Berneri to write the Constitution of the Italian Federation of Socialist Municipalities (based on the Italian acronym, FICS), an original constitution project with no predecessors within the anarchist movement which, unsurprisingly, remained unpublished for a long time. The research aims at explaining its existence within the Berneri's intellectual path, interpreting it as the result of a long elaboration of his ideas and operational proposals on libertarian federalism. This maturation is characterized by the presence of different influences, with those shared with Gaetano Salvemini's concrete and problematic approach being the decisive ones

Abstract: The International Workshop on Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions for Biomedical Applications (MAVEBA) came into being in 1999 from the particularly felt need of sharing know-how, objectives and results between areas that until then seemed quite distinct such as bioengineering, medicine and singing. MAVEBA deals with all aspects concerning the study of the human voice with applications ranging from the neonate to the adult and elderly. Over the years the initial issues have grown and spread also in other aspects of research such as occupational voice disorders, neurology, rehabilitation, image and video analysis. MAVEBA takes place every two years always in Firenze, Italy. This edition celebrates twenty years of uninterrupted and succesfully research in the field of voice analysis

Abstract: In 2017, the teachers of the Fortuzzi primary school in Bologna, as part of the school's centenary initiatives, conducted a public and participatory research on its history that involved pupils, parents and the neighbourhood. The essay summarizes this research path and reflects on the characteristics of this particular type of collective historical research

Abstract: Carlo Battisti (Trento 1882-Empoli 1977) was one of the major linguists in Italy and took part to the history of cinema starring in Vittorio De Sica's Umberto D.. His long and intense activity has been largely divided between linguistics and library science since the very beginning of his studies at the University of Vienna. In Florence, Battisti held lectures of Comparative History of the Romance Languages and of Library science and Bibliography at the School for Librarians and Palaeographer-Archivists, of which he was also director. The eight studies published here offer biographical and intellectual insights on him, and bring a series of unpublished documents to light. The volume is completed by an iconographic appendix
