    Abstract: Critique is common these days—and, in turn, is often subjected to criticism too. Against this background, this volume is an attempt to explore a Christian, social–ethical form of critique. Its aim is to critique the irrationality embedded in the structures of society with the practical purpose of creating more rational social institutions. There is no social critique, understood as a practice of reason, without a critique of domination, exclusion and subalternity. In that vein, any allegedly neutral practice or idea of reason also needs to be criticised. With contributions by Michelle Becka, Bernhard Emunds, Johannes Eurich, Gisela Kubon-Gilke, Torsten Meireis, Matthias Möhring-Hesse

    Abstract: Klappentext: The Arab Spring precipitated a crisis in political Islam. In Egypt Islamists have been crushed. In Turkey they have descended into authoritarianism. In Tunisia they govern but without the label of "political Islam." Andrew March explores how, before this crisis, Islamists developed a unique theory of popular sovereignty, one that promised to determine the future of democracy in the Middle East. This began with the claim of divine sovereignty, the demand to restore the sharīʻa in modern societies. But prominent theorists of political Islam also advanced another principle, the Quranic notion that God's authority on earth rests not with sultans or with scholars' interpretation of written law but with the entirety of the Muslim people, the umma. Drawing on this argument, utopian theorists such as Abū'l-Aʻlā Mawdūdī and Sayyid Quṭb released into the intellectual bloodstream the doctrine of the caliphate of man: while God is sovereign, He has appointed the multitude of believers as His vicegerent. The Caliphate of Man argues that the doctrine of the universal human caliphate underpins a specific democratic theory, a kind of Islamic republic of virtue in which the people have authority over the government and religious leaders. But is this an ideal regime destined to survive only as theory?--

    Abstract: This is not a book that provides a new integrated theory of religious change in modern societies, but rather one that develops theoretical elements that contribute to the understanding of some contemporary religious developments. Most of the approaches in sociology of religion are prone to emphasise either processes of religious decline or of religious upswing. For example, secularization theory usually includes a couple of relevant factors -such as functional differentiation, economic affluence or social equality -in order to account for religious change. However, the result of such a theory's empirical analyses seems to be certain in advance, namely that the social relevance of religion is decreasing. In contrast, the religious market model devised by sociologists of religion in the US is inclined to detect everywhere processes of religious upsurge. Religion and Modernity: An International Comparison avoids a purely theoretically based perspective on religious changes. For this reason, Detlef Pollack and Gergely Rosta do not begin with theoretical propositions but with questions. The authors raise the question of how the social significance of religion in its various facets has changed in modern societies, and explain what factors and conditions have contributed to these changes. --

    Abstract: Der Islam in Deutschland blickt auf eine über 50jährige Geschichte zurück, die wesentlich auf die Arbeitsmigration aus islamisch geprägten Ländern zurückgeht. Obwohl die Zahl der Muslime und ihre religiösen Organisationen bereits seit den 1970er Jahren stark zugenommen hat, sind islamkonnotierte Themen und Debatten erst zu Beginn der 2000er Jahre zu verzeichnen. Zum einen ist diese Entwicklung im Kontext globaler und europäischer Prozesse zu bewerten. Zum anderen aber auch die Tatsache, dass infolge der quantitativen und qualitativen Relevanz der muslimischen Minorität die Politik den Islam im integrations- und bildungspolitischen Kontext nicht mehr ausblenden konnte. Vor dem Hintergrund dieser ambivalenten Entwicklung hat sich der vorliegende Band zum Ziel gesetzt, eine Bestandsaufnahme der 50jährigen islamischen Geschichte im Kontext der Arbeitsmigration vorzulegen. In fünf zentralen Themenschwerpunkten soll das Leben der Muslime in Deutschland analysiert werden, um ein Gesamtbild zu erarbeiten. Quelle: Klappentext.

    Abstract: What does it mean to be an intellectual in Egypt today? What is expected from an 'authentic scholar'? And how does the mass media influence or reflect intellectual debates? Hatsuki Aishima explores these questions by examining educated, urban Egyptians and their perceptions of what it means to be 'cultured' and 'middle class' - something that, as a result of the neoliberal policies of Egyptian government, is perceived to be a shrinking sector of society. Discussing the media presentations and representations of Abdel-Halim Mahmoud - Sufi scholar and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar under former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat - she discusses the connection of Islam to these middle class considerations, as well as offering analysis concerning the commodification of religious teaching and knowledge. Public Culture and Islam in Modern Egypt is thereby a unique contribution to the fields of anthropology, Middle East and media studies. Hatsuki Aishima is Research Fellow at the National Museum of Ethnology, Japan. She holds a DPhil in Anthropology from St Antony's College, University of Oxford.

    Abstract: "Religion and Democratization is a comparative study of how regime types and religion-state arrangements frame questions of religious and political identities in Muslim and Catholic societies. The book proposes a theory for modeling the dynamics of "Religiously Friendly Democratization" processes in which states institutionally favor specific religious values and organizations and allow religious political parties to contest elections. Religiously friendly democratization has a transformative effect on both the democratic politics and religious life of society. The book explains this transformation as a function of religiously friendly democratization's effects on the political goals of religious leaders and the political salience of the religious identities of religious individuals. In a religiously charged national setting, as scholars working on the inclusion-moderation hypothesis have argued, religiously friendly democratization can generate more support for democracy among religious actors. By embedding religious ideas and values into its institutions, however, religiously friendly democratization also mediates the effects of secularization on national religious markets, creating more favorable conditions for the emergence of public religions and new trajectories of religious life. The book anchors its theoretical claims in case studies of Italy and Algeria, integrating original qualitative evidence and statistical data on voters' political and religious attitudes.     Abstract: Spätestens seit den 1960er Jahren rezipiert die Theologie in Deutschland in immer stärkerem Maße Erkenntnisse der Soziologie, um den Wandel von Religion und Kirche besser verstehen zu können. So wurden große empirische Forschungsprojekte durchgeführt - allen voran die Kirchenmitgliedschaftsstudien der Evangelischen Kirche in Deutschland (EKD), die im Rhythmus von 10 Jahren die Situation der evangelischen Kirche in der Gesellschaft erheben. (Zwei Beiträge des Bandes "Paradoxien kirchlicher Organisation" von Jan Hermelink und Gerhard Wegner bilanzieren sie.) Wichtige sozialwissenschaftliche Deutungsmuster fanden Eingang in theologisches Denken und kirchliche Praxis: von der Konzeption der sozialen Rolle, über die Theorie funktionaler Differenzierung bis hin zu den aktuellen Milieu- und Individualisierungstheorien. Bisweilen trat die spezifisch theologische Sicht durchaus in den Hintergrund. Wie ist das Verhältnis heute zu sehen? Hilft die Soziologie der Theologie zu einem Wirklichkeitsgewinn, oder stellt sie lediglich einen Säkularisierungseffekt dar?

    Abstract: Ein Aspekt der Globalisierung ist auch das Loslösen der Menschen von ihren kulturellen Wurzeln und damit einhergehend häufig die Relativierung des Religiösen und sicher Geglaubten. Roy, Fachmann für den politischen Islam warnt in seinem Diskussionsbeitrag vor einer zu stark ausgeprägten individuellen Suche, welche seiner Ansicht nach den Nährboden für religiösen Fanatismus bietet. Im Gegenteil plädiert er dafür, Religion eingebunden in den jeweiligen Kulturkreis auszuüben. Um seine Thesen zu verdeutlichen, zeigt er beispielhaft den grundlegenden Wandel auf, dem die Religionen unterliegen: Der Buddhismus breitet sich im Westen aus, Konvertiten prägen das Bild der abrahamitischen Religionen, Missionare jeglicher Couleur sind weltweit aktiv. All dies bedeutet im jeweiligen Kulturkreis den Bruch mit den Traditionen und führt zu Verunsicherung und Hinwendung zum Fanatismus.     Abstract: Als Begleitband zum Funkkolleg "Religion und Gesellschaft" des Hessischen Rundfunks (einzelne Hörbeiträge als E-Medien im Katalog) versammelt dieser Band Aufsätze verschiedener Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen aus unterschiedlichen Fachrichtungen und Veröffentlichungen, die sich der Frage nach Gott in den Religionen der Welt (wenn auch mehrheitlich mit besonderem Blick auf das Christentum) kritisch nähern: Spiritualität, Vernunft, Politik, Gesellschaft und Kultur sind die großen Themenbereiche, denen die einzelnen Beiträge zugeordnet sind. Krankmachende und heilsame Gottesbeziehungen, Gott als Produkt der Hirnaktivität in der Neurotheologie, Fundamentalismus und Intoleranz und die Bedeutung der Religionen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft werden neben vielen anderen Aspekten wissenschaftlich fundiert, aber gut lesbar erörtert. Zu den 35 ausgewählten Autorinnen und Autoren gehören Eugen Drewermann, Jürgen Habermas, Richard Dawkins, Katharina Liebsch und viele andere. Ein Autoren- und Quellenverzeichnis am Ende des Buches lädt dazu ein, den einen oder anderen Aspekt weiter zu vertiefen. Ein Register, das die inhaltliche Vielfalt weiter erschließen könnte, fehlt.
