Abstract: Wakhan in the Pamir region of Eastern Afghanistan is home to the last Kyrgyz nomads who live in the most isolated high-altitude community on the planet. Isolated in their mountain camps at 4300 meters above sea level, only 1200 of them survive as best they can. They live just a few miles away from three developed countries: China, Tajikistan and Pakistan. But history has closed the borders, imprisoning them on Afghan soil. There are no schools and no vehicles; there is no electricity and no cultivation here, not even a tree. While globalization threatens to swallow them up, the Kyrgyz people of the Afghan Pamir must fight for their survival, and to preserve their ways of life and unique traditions. Director Louis Meunier spent a whole year following these people, through the changing seasons. Among them, Abdul Wali would like to marry off his eldest son, Nematullah. But in Wakhan, a woman is worth 100 sheep and he can't afford the price. So he strikes a deal with a neighbouring clan and swaps his 18-year-old daughter for a wife for Nematullah. We discover from an insider's point of view how the Kyrgyz community functions, and the challenges it faces. Will these people survive here, or must they start looking for a future elsewhere?

Abstract: In Digoli, a small village in the Indian Himalayas, "magical" rituals and arranged marriages remain a common part of the mountain culture. But with the arrival of mobile phones, the extension of the radio relay system, and the exodus of men to the cities, modernity has begun to exert its influence. One beacon of Digoli's newfound innovation is the development of Avani, a cooperative that produces delicate silk. For fifteen years, Avani has enabled women to become socially and economically independent. Hema, one member of the co-op, finds herself torn between a traditional lifestyle working in the fields to provide food for her parents, and the opportunity to weave silk for Avani. Hema is chosen to travel to New Delhi to sell silk, but ultimately chooses to returns home. At age twenty-nine, when she's considered too old for marriage, she weds a jobless poor man named Harish. Without property, cattle, or money, they move to a remote village, but Avani soon proposes that Hema start a weaving center to teach locals, including her husband. Filmmaker and noted artist Catherine Addor-Confino punctuates the film with her vivid paintings, adding an imaginative element to this inspiring story of one woman's entrepreneurial spirit.

Abstract: Phil Agland revisits the Baka Pygmy family he filmed 25 years ago in his BAFTA award winning documentary 'Baka: People of the Rainforest'. An extraordinary journey into the heart of the rainforest in Cameroon, where the past of the Baka revisits them through watching the old film projected in the forest - raising questions about their old life in the forest and what is happening to them now. One generation later, the children of the old film are now parents. Camera, who was born at the end of the first film and named after Phil's film camera, now has a gorgeous seven year old daughter, Ambi. Camera's brother Ali, who wanted his baby sister thrown away in the original film, also has a young daughter, but tragically she is disabled. Watching themselves for the first time on film, seeing how their parents used to live, prompts laughter, amazement and a profound sense of loss. Leading ultimately to an epic journey deep into the forest to rediscover the old life of their fathers, and a quest to find the magical 'Elephant's Mirror', an almost mythical place where, their fathers had told them, the elephants go to admire their tusks. This is a tragic story of alcohol addiction, and the death of little children, of a family caught helplessly between the world of the forest and the outside world that rejects them. But it is also a story of redemption inspired by the old film and a lifeline to the future offered by the children, especially Camera's daughter, Ambi, who attends school for the first time.

Abstract: There are places on earth where people live together in harmony, each practicing a different religion. There are places in the world where food is still hunted and gathered without modern influence. There are islands and whole civilisations unchanged by industry, economics, religion or even science- life has been the same in these places for centuries. 'Unusual Cultures' is a fascinating look at people and their practises and the significance they play in day to day life. We explore culture from times of earliest civilisations to the present day.

Keywords: Hatsa (African people) ; United Kingdom ; Documentary films.
Abstract: The Hadzabe people of Tanzania are the last remaining ancestors of the original hunter-gatherer tribes who first inhabited Tanzania. For centuries their wandering, self-sufficient lifestyle immunised them to the homogenising effects of modernity felt across Africa. But now the creeping threat of tourism is poised to destroy them; their land sold as a private safari park UAE royalty, their hunting grounds settled, alcoholism and begging are becoming viable means of survival. This remarkable documentary takes us inside the Hadza community in its timeless heyday - tantalisingly unspoilt, a real history lesson.
