    Abstract: Breeding Cells is a film from the laboratory of reproduction. A fertility clinic is a place where human reproduction is separated from sex and anatomized into bio/technological components. There fertilization is made visible and manipulable on a cellular level while the couples themselves seem to become marginal participants in a process that involves a large number of different professionalized agents and technologies. Recorded in the ward of reproductional medicine at Charite Hospital Berlin, this documentary approaches a scientific environment with an experimental ethnographic gaze. The filmmakers meet an open and quite unexcited "fertility team", who consider themselves simply assistants of nature. But what is nature in a hospital environment that is highly regulated by procedural methods, doctors conventions and conservative laws? Closely describing the routines and moral concerns of the medical staff, the film is portraying a transition time, when biotechnological science fiction is turning into everyday life.

    Abstract: A-long comes from a long line of dragon dancers and is driven to prove his own worth. A pride to their town of Longphozai, his family has always observed cultural traditions and respected the village leaders -- unlike A-long's childhood sweetheart Fengmei. Wilful and rebellious, Fengmei is determined to be with A-long even if it means flouting the Huayao tradition by joining A-long's dragon dance team. Her impulsive charisma drives the team into numerous fixes and repeatedly brings the wrath of the village elder down upon a frustrated, confused A-long. But with a major dragon dance competition approaching, can A-long and Fengmei learn to balance their love with their cultural traditions? Or will they be forced to sacrifice one for the other?     Abstract: During her summer vacation, Dawa returned to Lhasa to see her grandparents. Unfortunately her grandfather was ill and dying. During this time, her grandmother, Yixi Zhuoma, told Dawa her love stories with three men. The first man in Yixi's life was Jiacuo, a strong mule boy from Kangba. At the same time Gongsa, the young master of Luoga Garden, had fallen in love with Yixi. Jiacuo was not persuaded and eloped with Yixi and married her. Their marriage and Jiacuo's great energy brought Yixi a very happy and romantic time in her life. However, as a mule boy, Jiacuo was used to an unstable lifestyle, which drove Yixi back to Gongsa. During the 1950s, Gongsa fled with the Dalai Lama and took Yixi's youngest son with him, asserting that the son was his. In the meantime, Jiacuo could not tolerate Yixi's betrayal and decided to return to his hometown, Kongba, with his oldest daughter. Several years later, when Yixi got the news that Jiacuo was seriously ill, she immediately decided to begin her difficult and dangerous journey searching for her husband. During that difficult time, she met her old friend Songqiu Lama, who was her third man as well as her forever lover in her life. In their youth, they used to spend a lot of time together, and Songqiu taught Yixi how to write and sing. Unfortunately, they were separated after Songqiu became a monk. With the coming of the Cultural Revolution, Songqiu was forced to leave his temple and lived as an ordinary man again. This enabled him to accompany Yixi to continue her difficult journey. He also encouraged Yixi to return to her husband and he would like to go back to being a Lama again. Dawa sets out to find these men. Awards/Festivals: Won Golden Rooster for Best Music, Special Jury Prize for Acting and Directing, Nominated for Golden Rooster for Best Actress, Best Film, Best Screenplay 2000; Won Film of Merit and Best Director, Shanghai Film Critics Award 2000; Interfaith Award, St. Louis International Film Festival 2001.

    Abstract: Four manners of yodelling and yootzing take place on the same day. The Yodel Mass, written in Swiss German dialect by the composer Jost Marty, is conducted by the director of the yodel choir in the church organ loft. Following that is a traditional local yootz arranged for the yodel choir — also performed in the church as a Bach choral would be — which, in a way, makes the profane become sacred. At dinner in a restaurant, a locally well-known traditional yootzer family performs for the wedding party. In the evening some villagers can be found in another inn performing not for an audience this time, but for their own pleasure. The wedding party also appreciates local customs such as large cowbell ringing, whip cracking and diatonic accordion playing to accompany dancing.

    Abstract: Performances of the local musical tradition and the official folklore are shown in their social contexts. We can see on the one hand peasant activities such as mowing, transporting wooden logs, milking and calling cattle, as well as people sitting together at home or in the local inn and on the other hand, a folk festival featuring wrestling and alphorn playing and the yearly concert of the local yodel choir. Singers of both styles discuss the differences between their practices.

    Abstract: Walking up to the summer alpine pastures is a yearly event that both people and cattle look forward to! Cattle calls, yootzing in the stable while milking, calling an alpine blessing through a milk funnel, yootzing together in the evening in the alpine chalet these are elements that many local people like to see, elements that reflect the idealized past of this people of herdsmen, as Swiss people like to call themselves. At the end of the film, an unexpected message reveals that real life was not as idyllic as it seems. It is a rare case of a film revealing its making of (years before the extras in DVDs became popular).

    Abstract: Innovative graphic animations with sync sound visualize the features of both musical structure and performance technique related not only to traditional local voice characteristics but also to the polished yodelling of a renowned soloist performing at yodel festivals. The film also shows the connections with instrumental music, such as the small alphorn and the diatonic accordion. This documentary is a very rare example of elements of musical structure and performance being explained through visual means (another example is the filmmaker's The Song of Harmonics).

    Abstract: In 1900 a twelve-year-old girl, Xiaoxiao, comes to a mountain village to discover that her uncle has arranged a marriage with a boy who is still breast-fed at two. Strict clan rules govern all behaviors, and she becomes her husband's nanny (he must call her sister until he is old enough to marry her). In one scene, the villagers are discussing a group of schoolgirls who are allowed to marry whomever they want, and who enjoy reading and a degree of freedom that Xiaoxiao longs for. Huagou, a local peasant, takes notice of Xiaoxiao, now sixteen and taking good care of six-year-old Chunguan, and a love affair begins with terrifying consequences. She knows the feudal values her community clings to, and watches them strip and drown a young widow who has been unfaithful to her husband. That woman's lover lives, albeit with broken legs. And what will happen to her?
