Abstract: Part starter-kit, part encyclopedia, and part inspiration, Self-Made Boss is an essential survival guide for small businesses When it comes to getting practical advice, small business owners too often don't know where to look. Sure, you can find all sorts of high-level strategic tips from Fortune 500 CEOs. But what if you own a restaurant, and you're trying to figure out how to source good fish, or if you're looking to increase revenue from your plumbing supply store? You'll be running a lot of Google searches before you hear from someone who's actually stood in your shoes. Longtime Square executives Jackie Reses and Lauren Weinberg want to change this. So they reached out across the country, talking to dozens of entrepreneurs with valuable businesses--and invaluable advice. This book is the product of that research. Part starter-kit, part encyclopedia, part inspiration, Self-Made Boss is filled with information not just about who these small business owners are, but how they built their companies, step by step. How did they get their start? When did they decide to hire more staff? How did they set a course for growth? And when problems arose, how did they fight through them? You'll hear from a second-generation ice cream shop owner on how to manage price increases; an oyster farmer finding new ways to stay afloat in the middle of a global pandemic; a roofer who refused to be denied or defined by her race and gender--and dozens of other small business owners making a big difference in their communities. No matter the size of your business today--or where you're thinking about taking the jump tomorrow--you'll find answers you can apply right away. Because there's a common purpose that all small business owners share: the drive to build something from the ground up; the relentless pursuit of turning obstacles into opportunities and roadblocks into stepping stones. It's tough and messy, hard-fought and hard-won. And above all, it's something you can't have when you work anywhere else--or for anyone else. That's what it means to be a Self-Made Boss.

Abstract: The way most business leaders deploy capex right now is nothing short of a train wreck. Very few look at their asset base as a collective network; rather, they see their assets as standalone performers, have no strategy for the role each asset plays in the grand scheme of things, and, therefore, fail to invest in their network for the long term to generate more cash for the business, asset by asset. Redesigning Capex Strategy provides an effective—and almost painfully obvious—solution to some of the greatest missed opportunities happening in business today. In this resource that will revolutionize your capex decision-making, globally renowned capex strategists Fredrik Weissenrieder and Daniel Lindén share their proven methodology for focusing on the entire range of potential strategies and cash flow outcomes for hundreds of scenarios across a multi-asset base. It’s not about incremental improvement. It’s a radical transformation of how you allocate capital—and avoid throwing good money after bad. With a capex strategy that accounts for each asset’s role as part of the asset network, there’s never a question about the best path forward. Redesigning Capex Strategy doesn’t just redesign your capex strategy—it helps you redesign your entire company’s future.

Abstract: As a leader, how do you discover and implement breakthrough opportunities? Gamify challenges. Level up your team. And play to WIN. Unveiling a comprehensive approach to extraordinary problem-solving, The GAME of Innovation offers all you need to meet challenges head on and seize the competitive edge. Conceived by a super-creative quartet of top-tier business consultants, The GAME of Innovation builds upon a novel premise: What if you framed problems as if they were games of profound significance? How might you design something new or reimagine the old, particularly when competition increases, technology disrupts, change accelerates, money tightens, and the rules of success are constantly evolving? The book then shares a flexible methodology for designing powerhouse problem-solving GAMEs (Guidelines, Arena, Materials, Experience), aligning teams with 5 problem-solving "lenses," building consensus behind change, and leading/managing the process. This uncommon, easy-to-read, visual book is packed with actionable strategies that will help you and your community thrive when playing The GAME of Innovation

Abstract: "A renowned executive recruitment expert provides you with a playbook to implement systematic, repeatable, best-in-class hiring practices to give your business maximum competitive advantage. Data and analytics are reshaping countless industries as they turn from anecdotal to evidence-based practices. Yet while most aspects of business operations today rely on clearly defined measures of success that are continuously tracked and improved, in most organizations, hiring and recruitment is still run on intuition. Evidence-Based Recruiting flips that script, putting the power of big data and analytics to work for you. Written by the respected CEO of a pre-eminent specialized executive search firm, this book makes a case for best-in-class recruiting methods, showing how companies like Google and Netflix utilize evidence-based techniques to land top-tier talent, and how you can do the same by implementing systematic and repeatable processes that lead to better and more consistent hiring outcomes. You will be given the elements of an evidence-based approach, learn how to distinguish good evidence from bad, and understand why many hiring predictions fail-and what you can do about it. A must-read for CEOs, hiring managers, and human resources professionals, Evidence-Based Recruiting provides you with the tools you need to thrive in the new era of talent acquisition"--

The Age of Revolutions as a turning point in the history of citizenship.
Abstract: "The Citizenship Experiment explores the fate of citizenship ideals in the Age of Revolutions. While in the early 1790s citizenship ideals in the Atlantic world converged, the twin shocks of the Haitian Revolution and the French Revolutionary Terror led the American, French, and Dutch publics to abandon the notion of a shared, Atlantic, revolutionary vision of citizenship. Instead, they forged conceptions of citizenship that were limited to national contexts, restricted categories of voters, and 'advanced' stages of civilization. Weaving together the convergence and divergence of an Atlantic revolutionary discourse, debates on citizenship, and the intellectual repercussions of the Terror and the Haitian Revolution, Koekkoek offers a fresh perspective on the revolutionary 1790s as a turning point in the history of citizenship"

Abstract: "A Companion to Geoffrey of Monmouth brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to provide an updated scholarly introduction to all aspects of his work. Arguably the most influential secular writer of medieval Britain, Geoffrey (d. 1154) popularized Arthurian literature and left an indelible mark on European romance, history, and genealogy. Despite this outsized influence, Geoffrey's own life, background, and motivations are little understood. The volume situates his life and works within their immediate historical context, and frames them within current critical discussion across the humanities. By necessity, this volume concentrates primarily on Geoffrey's own life and times, with the reception of his works covered by a series of short encyclopaedic overviews, organized by language, that serve as guides to further reading. Abstract: An indispensable guide to reducing the suffering-of patients and caregivers alike-and to improving healthcare delivery for all In our efforts to treat patients, cure illness, and manage institutions, healthcare professionals too often overlook the fundamental purpose everyone in the industry shares: to alleviate suffering. Press Ganey's Chief Nursing Officer, Christina Dempsey, has worked everywhere in healthcare, from the ward floor to the hospital boardroom. She has also experienced the system as a patient and as a family member of a critically ill patient. In The Antidote to Suffering , this 30-year healthcare veteran and patient-experience thought leader argues that the key to improving healthcare is to reduce the suffering-physical, psychological, and emotional-of patients and caregivers alike through Compassionate Connected CareTM. Drawing on her 360-degree perspective, Dempsey offers a comprehensive, detailed, evidence-based plan that addresses the clinical, operational, cultural, and behavioral dimensions of care that every patient and caregiver experiences, in every setting. When suffering decreases, Dempsey argues, outcomes improve for patients and those who care for them. A virtuous cycle takes hold, leading to increases in morale, loyalty, and productivity and results in a culture that drives quality, safety, and value. It paves the path for creating a new national healthcare culture-one that values compassion, fosters efficiency, and drives innovation The Antidote to Suffering is the first book to explore the pervasiveness of suffering in our healthcare system, and to provide the strategies and tools to: * Identify and measure suffering throughout your organization * Create a system in which every clinical response is informed by compassion * Operationalize staff behavior to promote meaning and purpose * Increase productivity by building a culture of collaboration Reducing human suffering isn't just a moral imperative for healthcare providers. It's a practical way to improve organizations and fix our broken system-without sacrificing the respect, dignity, and compassion we all deserve.

Abstract: What do Mark Cuban, Steve Case, Sanjay Gupta, Donna Shalala, and Christina Aguilera all have in common? They are all Junior Achievement alumni who developed an entrepreneurial attitude about their life's work! In this landmark book, Larry Farrell, the world's most experienced authority on researching and teaching entrepreneurship, has partnered with JA to bring their combined vast experience directly to you. In The Entrepreneurial Attitude , Farrell reveals his latest research on the four fundamental practices of the world's greatest entrepreneurs: Sense of Mission, Customer/Product Vision, High-Speed Innovation, and Self-Inspired Behavior. He then brings those proven practices to life through interviews with seventy high-achieving JA alumni across 35 countries including AOL founder Steve Case, CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, British MP David Lammy, Hong Kong biotech entrepreneur Eric Chen, social entrepreneur Fernando Tamayo in Peru, non-profit pioneer Sheikha Hessa al-Khalifa in Bahrain, Journalist Adedayo Fashanu in Nigeria, and President of the Clinton Foundation Donna Shalala. This powerful combination illustrates for the first time that having an entrepreneurial attitude is the key to success in any career in any field: a business start-up or a large corporation, social enterprise, the traditional professions, government, or even the arts. Farrell also provides application planning exercises, helping you to apply the entrepreneurial basics to your own chosen field.

Abstract: Killing your current marketing structure may be the only way to save it! Two of the world's top marketing experts reveal the next level of breakthrough success-transforming your marketing strategy into a standalone profit center. What if everything we currently know about marketing is what is holding us back? Over the last two decades, we've watched the entire world change the way it buys and stays loyal to brands. But, marketing departments are still operating in the same, campaign-centric, product-led operation that they have been following for 75 years. The most innovative companies around the world have achieved remarkable marketing results by fundamentally changing their approach. By creating value for customers through the use of owned media and the savvy use of content, these businesses have dramatically increased customer loyalty and revenue. Some of them have even taken it to the next step and developed a marketing function that actually pays for itself. Killing Marketing explores how these companies are ending the marketing as we know it--in favor of this new, exciting model. Killing Marketing provides the insight, approaches, and examples you need to understand these disruptive forces in ways that turn your marketing from cost center to revenue creator. This book builds the case for, literally, transforming the purpose of marketing within your organization. Joe Pulizzi and Robert Rose of the Content Marketing Institute show how leading companies are able sell the very content that propels their marketing strategy. You'll learn how to: * Transform all or part of your marketing operation into a media company * Integrate this new operation into traditional marketing efforts * Develop best practices for attracting and retaining audiences * Build a strategy for competing against traditional media companies * Create a paid/earned media strategy fueled by an owned media strategy Red Bull, Johnson & Johnson, Disney and Arrow Electronics have succeeded in what ten years ago would have been deemed impossible. They continue to market their products as they always have, and, through their content-driven and audience-building initiatives, they drive value outside the day-to-day products they sell-and monetize it directly. Killing Marketing rewrites the rules of marketing-enabling you to make the kind of transition that turns average companies into industry legends.

Abstract: The antidote to navigating turbulent times isn't more rules. It is timeless virtue that creates sustainable value. Thoughtful leaders are keenly aware of the enormous challenge they face to drive high performance in a world that continues to ratchet up pressure and uncertainty. Some leaders respond by getting tough and establishing strict rules. They get people in line, but they don't inspire excellence. Wise leaders, on the other hand, help their people practice character to navigate their way through the turbulence-without lowering performance expectations. As a result, their people are more reliable under pressure. Exception to the Rule links ancient wisdom with contemporary science on high performance, teamwork, and engagement. Building an organizational culture based on classical virtues- of trust, compassion, courage, justice, wisdom, temperance and hope - is both strategically smart and a better way to live. Exception to the Rule walks you through the steps of helping everyone in your organization focus on character defined by virtue. The word virtue means excellence, which is why each one is essential to help people perform at a high level despite uncertainty and pressure. Under character--based leadership, teams work better together, creativity flourishes and engagement increases. The most powerful idea of Exception to the Rule is this: character defined by virtue is not based on birthright; it can be learned and practiced. Everyone can develop habits to become better than they were. While character cannot be legislated, character can be cultivated. As virtue proves its value, the culture you have can evolve into the culture you need.

Abstract: A book for a different breed of business leader, one who looks beyond the moment to create a life of significance. Most of us are familiar with the traditional way of looking at legacy-something preserved in the past. Traditional legacy is all around us, evidenced by the steady churn of autobiographies, bequests, commemorations, and dedications we are forever leaving in our collective cultural wake. This is not the legacy you will find in this book. Legacy in the Making celebrates an active, dynamic form of "modern legacy," seen through the eyes of a select group of extraordinary men and women who are pursuing their enduring ambitions in the age of now. More than caretakers of the past, these modern legacy builders are also the authors of a vital today and tomorrow. Rather than leaving their legacies behind them, they are looking ahead to harness their long-term ambitions and inspire others to help carry them forward. These are not static, traditional legacies. These are legacies in the making.

Abstract: Domestic Devotions in Early Modern Italy illuminates the vibrancy of spiritual beliefs and practices which profoundly shaped family life in this era. Scholarship on Catholicism has tended to focus on institutions, but the home was the site of religious instruction and reading, prayer and meditation, communal worship, multi-sensory devotions, contemplation of religious images and the performance of rituals, as well as extraordinary events such as miracles. Drawing on a wide range of sources, this volume affirms the central place of the household to spiritual life and reveals the myriad ways in which devotion met domestic needs. The seventeen essays encompass religious history, the histories of art and architecture, material culture, musicology, literary history, and social and cultural history. Contributors are Erminia Ardissino, Michele Bacci, Michael J. Abstract: An industry insider reveals the next generation of marketing-and provides the insight you need to use it to beat the competition One of the hottest forms of advertising, native advertising is an extremely effective way to reach customers. Produced by marketers and featured alongside the main content, native advertising breaks down the traditional barrier between advertising and editorial. Industry insider and Hearst ad executive Mike Smith believes that native is not only here to stay, but is the future of marketing. The Native Advertising Advantage reveals why native advertising is an effective tool in any company's digital marketing strategy-and how to use it to build new revenue streams. Smith explains how native ads are blending in with their surrounding content to blur the traditional "church/state" divide of editorial versus advertising. He shows how publications as diverse as BuzzFeed, Forbes , Cosmopolitan , and The New York Times are attracting readers who are just as interested in the content of these native ads as they are of journalist-written editorial content Gleaned from dozens of interviews with advertisers, marketers, software developers, journalists, and publishers, the book reveals how native advertising fits into the marketing strategies and advertising budgets of successful companies such as GE, Intel, HP, Red Bull, ConAgra Foods, Pepsi, and others.

Abstract: The book is based on the hypothesis that a systematic analysis of the Chinese economic discourse is necessary in order to understand the underlying logic of Chinese economic development. The majority of works on the subject see China's economic development as a linear process of marketization or "growing out of the plan". In contradistinction to the prevailing paradigm, this book underlines that basic economic issues such as over-investment and unbalanced development continue to frame economic policy-making. The book is also unique in basing the narrative on a rich collection of Chinese language material

His various roles as translator of the Qurʾan, traveller to the Near East, political journalist writing on behalf of Muslim Turkey, and creator of the Muslim novel are discussed. In later life Pickthall became a prominent member of the British Muslim community in London and Woking, co-worker with Muslims in the Indian subcontinent, supporter of the Khilafat movement, and editor of the journal Islamic Culture under the patronage of the Nizam of Hyderabad. Marmaduke Pickthall: Islam and the Modern World makes an important contribution to the field of Muslims in Europe in the first half of the twentieth century

Abstract: "In 'Narratives of Kingship in Eurasian Empires, 1300-1800' Richard van Leeuwen analyses representations and constructions of the idea of kingship in fictional texts of various genres, especially belonging to the intermediate layer between popular and official literature. The analysis shows how ideologies of power are embedded in the literary and cultural imagination of societies, their cultural values and conceptualizations of authority. By referring to examples from various empires (Chinese, Indian, Persian, Arabic, Turkish, European) the parallels between literary traditions are laid bare, revealing remarkable common concerns. The process of interaction and transmission are highlighted to illustrate how literature served as a repository for ideological and cultural values transforming power into authority in various imperial environments."--Cover page 4

Abstract: "This issue of 'International Development Policy' looks at recent paradigmatic innovations and development trajectories in Latin America, with a particular focus on the Andean region. After a period of robust growth, poverty alleviation and inequality reduction associated with high commodity prices, this issue examines the diverse development narratives and experiences in countries such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Highlighting propositions such as 'buen vivir', this thematic issue questions whether competing ideologies and discourses have translated into different outcomes, be it with regard to environmental sustainability, social progress, primary commodity dependence, or the rights and cultural identity of indigenous peoples. This collection aims to enrich our understanding of recent development debates and processes in Latin America, and what the rest of the world can learn from them."--Cover page 4

Abstract: Entry into force of the UN Watercourses Convention in August 2014, and the opening of the UNECE Water Convention to all states in March 2016, are significant milestones in international water law. A comparative analysis of these two global water conventions and the 1995 Mekong Agreement reveals that all three instruments are generally compatible. Nonetheless, the international legal principles and processes set forth in the two conventions can render the Mekong Agreement more up-to-date, robust and practical. The Governance Regime of the Mekong River Basin: Can the Global Water Conventions Strengthen the 1995 Mekong Agreement?' contends that strengthening the Agreement would be timely, given the increasing pressures associated with the rapid hydropower development within the basin and the gradually emerging disputes therein. Due to these fast-moving developments, Kinna and Rieu-Clarke strongly recommend that the Mekong states should seriously consider joining both conventions in order to buttress and clarify key provisions of the 1995 Mekong Agreement

Abstract: Philology was everywhere and nowhere in classical South Asia. While its civilizations possessed remarkably sophisticated tools and methods of textual analysis, interpretation, and transmission, they lacked any sense of a common disciplinary or intellectual project uniting these; indeed they lacked a word for 'philology' altogether. Arguing that such pseudepigraphical genres as the Sanskrit 'puranas' and tantras incorporated modes of philological reading and writing, Cox demonstrates the ways in which the production of these works in turn motivated the invention of new kinds of 'sastric' scholarship. Combining close textual analysis with wider theoretical concerns, Cox traces this philological transformation in the works of the dramaturgist Saradatanaya, the celebrated Vaisnava poet-theologian Venkatanatha, and the maverick Saiva mystic Mahesvarananda
